The Prediction of a Gapless Topological "Haldane Liquid" Phase in a One-Dimensional Cold Polar Molecular Lattice

We show that ultracold two-component fermionic dipolar gases in an optical lattice with strong two-body on-site loss can be used to realize a tunable effective spin-one model. Fermion number conservation provides an unusual constraint that $\sum_i (S^z_i)^2$ is conserved, leading to a novel topological liquid phase in one dimension which can be thought of as the gapless analog of the Haldane gapped phase of a spin-one Heisenberg chain. The properties of this phase are calculated numerically via the infinite time-evolving block decimation method and analytically via a mapping to a one-mode Luttinger liquid with hidden spin information.

Various types of phase transitions in the AdS soliton background

We study the basic holographic insulator and superconductor phase transition in the AdS soliton background by generalizing the spontaneous breaking of a global U(1) symmetry to occur via St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg mechanism. We construct the soliton solutions with backreaction and examine the effects of the backreaction on the condensation of the scalar hair in the generalized St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg Lagrangian. We disclose rich physics in various phase transitions. In addition to the AdS soliton configuration, we also examine the property of the phase transition in the AdS black hole background.

Earthquake Forecast via Neutrino Tomography

We discuss the possibility of forecasting earthquakes by means of (anti)neutrino tomography. Antineutrinos emitted from reactors are used as a probe. As the antineutrinos traverse through a region prone to earthquakes, observable variations in the matter effect on the antineutrino oscillation would provide a tomography of the vicinity of the region. In this preliminary work, we adopt a simplified model for the geometrical profile and matter density in a fault zone. We calculate the survival probability of electron antineutrinos for cases without and with an anomalous accumulation of electrons which can be considered as a clear signal of the coming earthquake, at the geological region with a fault zone, and find that the variation may reach as much as 3% for $\bar ν_e$ emitted from a reactor. The case for a $ν_e$ beam from a neutrino factory is also investigated, and it is noted that, because of the typically high energy associated with such neutrinos, the oscillation length is too large and the resultant variation is not practically observable. Our conclusion is that with the present reactor facilities and detection techniques, it is still a difficult task to make an earthquake forecast using such a scheme, though it seems to be possible from a theoretical point of view while ignoring some uncertainties. However, with the development of the geology, especially the knowledge about the fault zone, and with the improvement of the detection techniques, etc., there is hope that a medium-term earthquake forecast would be feasible.

Spin Polarized and Valley Helical Edge Modes in Graphene Nanoribbons

Inspired by recent progress in fabricating precisely zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons and the observation of edge magnetism, we find that spin polarized edge modes with well-defined valley index can exist in a bulk energy gap opened by a staggered sublattice potential such as that provided by a hexagonal Boron-Nitride substrate. Our result is obtained by both tight-binding model and first principles calculations. These edge modes are helical with respect to the valley degree of freedom, and are robust against scattering, as long as the disorder potential is smooth over atomic scale, resulting from the protection of the large momentum separation of the valleys.

Testing the interaction between dark energy and dark matter via latest observations

Cosmological analysis based on currently available observations are unable to rule out a sizeable coupling between dark energy and dark matter. However, the signature of the coupling is not easy to grasp, since the coupling is degenerate with other cosmological parameters, such as the dark energy equation of state and the dark matter abundance. We discuss the possible ways to break such degeneracy. Based on the perturbation formalism, we carry out the global fitting by using latest observational data and get a tight constraint on the interaction between dark sectors. We find that the appropriate interaction can alleviate the coincidence problem.

General holographic superconductor models with backreactions

We study general models of holographic superconductors away from the probe limit. We find that the backreaction of the spacetime can bring richer physics in the phase transition. Moreover we observe that the ratio $ω_g/T_c$ changes with the strength of the backreaction and is not a universal constant.

The imprint of the interaction between dark sectors in galaxy clusters

Based on perturbation theory, we study the dynamics of how dark matter and dark energy in the collapsing system approach dynamical equilibrium while interacting. We find that the interaction between dark sectors cannot ensure the dark energy to fully cluster along with dark, leading to the energy non-conservation problem in the collapsing system We examine the cluster number counts dependence on the interaction between dark sectors. Furthermore, we analyze how dark energy inhomogeneities affect cluster abundances. It is shown that cluster number counts can provide specific signature of dark sectors interaction and dark energy inhomogeneities.

First-principles investigation of dynamical properties of molecular devices under a steplike pulse

We report a computationally tractable approach to first principles investigation of time-dependent current of molecular devices under a step-like pulse. For molecular devices, all the resonant states below Fermi level contribute to the time-dependent current. Hence calculation beyond wideband limit must be carried out for a quantitative analysis of transient dynamics of molecules devices. Based on the exact non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism of calculating the transient current in Ref.\onlinecite{Maciejko}, we develop two approximate schemes going beyond the wideband limit, they are all suitable for first principles calculation using the NEGF combined with density functional theory. Benchmark test has been done by comparing with the exact solution of a single level quantum dot system. Good agreement has been reached for two approximate schemes. As an application, we calculate the transient current using the first approximated formula with opposite voltage $V_L(t)=-V_R(t)$ in two molecular structures: Al-${\rm C}_{5}$-Al and Al-${\rm C}_{60}$-Al. As illustrated in these examples, our formalism can be easily implemented for real molecular devices. Importantly, our new formula has captured the essential physics of dynamical properties of molecular devices and gives the correct steady state current at $t=0$ and $t\rightarrow \infty$.

Influence on the entropic force by the virtual degree of freedom on the holographic screen

We generalize the study of entropic force to a general static spherical spacetime and examine the acceleration, temperature, equation of gravity and the energy associated with the holographic screen in this general background. We show that the virtual degree of freedom on the holographic screen plays a crucial role in interpreting field equations of gravity based on thermodynamical perspective.

Gröbner-Shirshov Bases and Hilbert Series of Free Dendriform Algebras

In this paper, we give a Gröbner-Shirshov basis of the free dendriform algebra as a quotient algebra of an $L$-algebra. As applications, we obtain a normal form of the free dendriform algebra. Moreover, Hilbert series and Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of finitely generated free dendriform algebras are obtained.

Dynamical perturbations and critical phenomena in Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes

We investigate the perturbations of charged scalar field in $5$-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole backgrounds. From the perturbation behaviors we obtain the objective picture on how the high curvature influence the spacetime perturbation and the condensation of the scalar hair. The high curvature effects can also be read from the linear response function such as the susceptibility and the correlation length, when the system approaches the critical point. We find that the Gauss-Bonnet term does not affect the critical exponents of the system and they still take the mean-field values.

Analytical study on holographic superconductors in external magnetic field

We investigate the holographic superconductors immersed in an external magnetic field by using the analytical approach. We obtain the spatially dependent condensate solutions in the presence of the magnetism and find analytically that the upper critical magnetic field satisfies the relation given in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We observe analytically the reminiscent of the Meissner effect where the magnetic field expels the condensate. Extending to the D-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes, we examine the influence given by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the condensation. Different from the positive coupling, we find that the negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling enhances the condensation when the external magnetism is not strong enough.

General holographic superconductor models with Gauss-Bonnet corrections

We study general models for holographic superconductors in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find that different values of Gauss-Bonnet correction term and model parameters can determine the order of phase transitions and critical exponents of second-order phase transitions. Moreover we find that the size and strength of the conductivity coherence peak can be controlled. The ratios $ω_g/Tc$ for various model parameters have also been examined.

Quasinormal Modes of Charged Fermions and Phase Transition of Black Holes

We study the quasinormal modes of massless charged fermions in a Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime. In the probe limit, we find that the imaginary part of quasinormal frequency will become positive when the temperature of the black hole is below a critical value. This indicates an instability of the black hole occurs and a phase transition happens. In the AdS/CFT correspondence, this transition can be viewed as a superconducting phase transition and the bulk fermion is regarded as the order parameter. When the coupling of the fermions and the background electric field becomes stronger, the critical temperature of the phase transition becomes higher. If the interaction between the fermion and the electric field can be ignored, namely in the case of a neutral fermion, the imaginary part of the quasinormal modes is always negative, which indicates that the black hole is stable and no phase transition occurs.

Bose-Fermi solid and its quantum melting in an one-dimensional optical lattice

We investigate the quantum phase diagram of Bose-Fermi mixtures of ultracold dipolar particles trapped in one-dimensional optical lattices in the thermodynamic limit. With the presence of nearest-neighbor (N.N.) interactions, a long-ranged ordered crystalline phase (Bose-Fermi solid) is found stabilized between a Mott insulator of bosons and a band-insulator of fermions in the limit of weak inter-site tunneling ($J$). When $J$ is increased, such a Bose-Fermi solid can be quantum melted into a Bose-Fermi liquid through either a two-stage or a three-stage transition, depending on whether the crystalline order is dominated by the N.N. interaction between fermions or bosons. These properties can be understood as quantum competition between a pseudo-spin frustration and a pseudo-spin-charge separation, qualitatively different from the classical picture of solid-liquid phase transition.

Probing the cosmic acceleration from combinations of different data sets

We examine in some detail the influence of the systematics in different data sets including type Ia supernova sample, baryon acoustic oscillation data and the cosmic microwave background information on the fitting results of the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization. We find that the systematics in the data sets does influence the fitting results and leads to different evolutional behavior of dark energy. To check the versatility of Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization, we also perform the analysis on the Wetterich parametrization of dark energy. The results show that both the parametrization of dark energy and the systematics in data sets influence the evolutional behavior of dark energy.
