Observational constrains on the DGP brane-world model with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk

Using the data coming from the new 182 Gold type Ia supernova samples, the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the H(z) data, we have performed a statistical joint analysis of the DGP brane-world model with a high curvature Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. Consistent parameters estimations show that the Gauss-Bonnet-Induced Gravity model is a viable candidate to explain the observed acceleration of our universe.

Testing the viability of the interacting holographic dark energy model by using combined observational constraints

Using the data coming from the new 182 Gold type Ia supernova samples, the shift parameter of the Cosmic Microwave Background given by the three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations, and the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, $H(z)$ and lookback time measurements, we have performed a statistical joint analysis of the interacting holographic dark energy model. Consistent parameter estimations show us that the interacting holographic dark energy model is a viable candidate to explain the observed acceleration of our universe.

The energy absorption problem of a brane-world black hole

We have studied the wave dynamics and the energy absorption problem for the scalar field as well as the brane-localized gravitational field in the background of a braneworld black hole. Comparing our results with the four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, we have observed the signature of the extra dimension in the energy absorption spectrum.

String inspired explanation for the super-acceleration of our universe

We investigate the effect of the bulk content in the general Gauss-Bonnet braneworld on the evolution of the universe. We find that the Gauss-Bonnet term and the combination of the dark radiation and the matter content of the bulk play a crucial role in the universe evolution. We show that our model can describe the super-acceleration of our universe with the equation of state of the effective dark energy in agreement with observations.

The phase transition and the Quasi-Normal Modes of black Holes

We reexamined the argument that the quasinormal modes could be a probe of the phase transition of a topological black hole to a hairy configuration by investigating general scalar perturbations. We found further evidence in the quasinormal modes for this phase transition. For the general black hole configurations, we observed that although the quasinormal modes can present us different phases of different configurations, there is no dramatic change in the slope of quasinormal frequencies at the critical point of the phase transition. More detailed studies of quasinormal modes are needed to reveal the subtle behavior of the phase transition.

The generalized second law of thermodynamics in the accelerating universe

We show that in the accelerating universe the generalized second law of thermodynamics holds only in the case where the enveloping surface is the apparent horizon, but not in the case of the event horizon. The present analysis relies on the most recent SNe Ia events, being model independent. Our study might suggest that event horizon is not a physical boundary from the point of view of thermodynamics.

Deep Connection Between Thermodynamics and Gravity in Gauss-Bonnet Braneworld

We disclose the deep connection between the thermodynamics and gravity in a general braneworld model with curvature correction terms on the brane and in the bulk, respectively. We show that the Friedmann equations on the 3-brane embedded in the 5D spacetime with curvature correction terms can be written directly in the form of the first law of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon. Using the first law, we extract the entropy expression of the apparent horizon on the brane, which is useful in studying the thermodynamical properties of the black hole horizon on the brane in Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Thermodynamical properties of dark energy

We have investigated the thermodynamical properties of dark energy. Assuming that the dark energy temperature $T\sim a^{-n}$ and considering that the volume of the Universe enveloped by the apparent horizon relates to the temperature, we have derived the dark energy entropy. For dark energy with constant equation of state $w>-1$ and the generalized Chaplygin gas, the derived entropy can be positive and satisfy the entropy bound. The total entropy, including those of dark energy, the thermal radiation and the apparent horizon, satisfies the generalized second law of thermodynamics. However, for the phantom with constant equation of state, the positivity of entropy, the entropy bound, and the generalized second law cannot be satisfied simultaneously.

Ricci Flat Black Holes and Hawking-Page Phase Transition in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and Dilaton Gravity

It is well-known that there exists a Hawking-Page phase transition between a spherical AdS black hole and a thermal AdS space. The phase transition does not happen between a Ricci flat AdS black hole whose horizon is a Ricci flat space and a thermal AdS space in the Poincare coordinates. However, the Hawking-Page phase transition occurs between a Ricci flat AdS black hole and an AdS soliton if at least one of horizon coordinates for the Ricci flat black hole is compact. We show a similar phase transition betwen the Ricci flat black holes and deformed AdS solitons in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity and the dilaton gravity with a Liouville-type potential including the gauged supergravity coming from the spherical reduction of Dp-branes in type II supergravity. In contrast to Einstein gravity, we find that the high temperature phase can be dominated either by black holes or deformed AdS solitons depending on parameters.

Interacting Dark Energy and Dark Matter: observational Constraints from Cosmological Parameters

Several observational constraints are imposed on the interacting holographic model of Dark Energy and Dark Matter. First we use the age parameter today, as given by the WMAP results. Subsequently, we explained the reason why it is possible, as recently observed, for an old quasar to be observed in early stages of the universe. We discuss this question in terms of the evolution of the age parameter as well as in terms of the structure formation. Finally, we give a detailed discussion of the constraints implied by the observed CMB low $\ell$ suppression. As a result, the interacting holographic model has been proved to be robust and with reasonable bounds predicts a non vanishing interaction of Dark Energy and Dark Matter.

The mass and the coupling of the Dark Particle

We argue that Dark Matter can be described by an interacting field theory with a mass parameter of the order of the proton mass and an interaction coupling of the order of the QED coupling.

Thermodynamical Properties of Apparent Horizon in Warped DGP Braneworld

In this paper we first obtain Friedmann equations for the $(n-1)$-dimensional brane embedded in the $(n+1)$-dimensional bulk, with intrinsic curvature term of the brane included in the action (DGP model). Then, we show that one can always rewrite the Friedmann equations in the form of the first law of thermodynamics, $dE=TdS+WdV$, at apparent horizon on the brane, regardless of whether there is the intrinsic curvature term on the brane or a cosmological constant in the bulk. Using the first law, we extract the entropy expression of the apparent horizon on the brane. We also show that in the case without the intrinsic curvature term, the entropy expressions are the same by using the apparent horizon on the brane and by using the bulk geometry. When the intrinsic curvature appears, the entropy of apparent horizon on the brane has two parts, one part follows the $n$-dimensional area formula on the brane, and the other part is the same as the entropy in the case without the intrinsic curvature term. As an interesting result, in the warped DGP model, the entropy expression in the bulk and on the brane are not the same. This is reasonable, since in this model gravity on the brane has two parts, one induced from the $(n+1)$-dimensional bulk gravity and the other due to the intrinsic curvature term on the brane.

Wave dynamics of a six-dimensional black hole localized on a tensional three-brane

We study the quasinormal modes and the late-time tail behavior of scalar perturbation in the background of a black hole localized on a tensional three-brane in a world with two large extra dimensions. We find that finite brane tension modifies the standard results in the wave dynamics for the case of a black hole on a brane with completely negligible tension. We argue that the wave dynamics contains the imprint of the extra dimensions.

Thermodynamical properties of the Universe with dark energy

We have investigated the thermodynamical properties of the Universe with dark energy. Adopting the usual assumption in deriving the constant co-moving entropy density that the physical volume and the temperature are independent, we observed some strange thermodynamical behaviors. However, these strange behaviors disappeared if we consider the realistic situation that the physical volume and the temperature of the Universe are related. Based on the well known correspondence between the Friedmann equation and the first law of thermodynamics of the apparent horizon, we argued that the apparent horizon is the physical horizon in dealing with thermodynamics problems. We have concentrated on the volume of the Universe within the apparent horizon and considered that the Universe is in thermal equilibrium with the Hawking temperature on the apparent horizon. For dark energy with $w\ge -1$, the holographic principle and the generalized second law are always respected.

Influence of Lorentz violation on Dirac quasinormal modes in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime

Using the third-order WKB approximation and monodromy methods, we investigate the influence of Lorentz violating coefficient $b$ (associated with a special axial-vector $b_μ$ field) on Dirac quasinormal modes in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. At fundamental overtone, the real part decreases linearly as the parameter $b$ increases. But the variation of the imaginary part with $b$ becomes more complex. For the larger multiple moment $k$, the magnitude of imaginary part increases with the increase of $b$, which means that presence of Lorentz violation makes Dirac field damps more rapidly. At high overtones, it is found that the real part of high-damped quasinormal frequency does not tend to zero, which is quite a different from the symptotic Dirac quasinormal modes without Lorentz violation.

Sieve estimates for biased survival data

In studies involving lifetimes, observed survival times are frequently censored and possibly subject to biased sampling. In this paper, we model survival times under biased sampling (a.k.a., biased survival data) by a semi-parametric model, in which the selection function $w(t)$ (that leads to the biased sampling) is specified up to an unknown finite dimensional parameter $θ$, while the density function $f(t)$ of the survival times is assumed only to be smooth. Under this model, two estimators are derived to estimate the density function $f$, and a pseudo maximum likelihood estimation procedure is developed to estimate $θ$. The identifiability of the estimation problem is discussed and the performance of the new estimators is illustrated via both simulation studies and a real data application.

Chemical Potential Dependence of Chiral Quark Condensate in Dyson-Schwinger Equation Approach of QCD

We propose a chemical potential dependent effective gluon propagator and study the chiral quark condensate in strongly interacting matter in the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equation approach. The obtained results manifest that, as the effect of the chemical potential on the effective gluon propagator is taken into account, the chiral quark condensate decreases gradually with the increasing of the chemical potential if it is less than the critical value, and the condensate vanishes suddenly at the critical chemical potential. The inclusion of the chemical potential in the effective gluon propagator enhances the decreasing rate and decreases the critical chemical potential. It indicates that the chiral symmetry can be restored completely at a critical chemical potential and restored partially as the chemical potential is less than the critical value. If the effective gluon propagator is independent of the chemical potential, the chiral symmetry can only be restored suddenly but no gradual restoration.

The signals from the brane-world black Hole

Comparing with the four-dimensional black holes, we have observed the signature of the tidal charge which presents the signals of the extra dimension both in the wave dynamics and the Hawking radiation.
