The thermal evolution of nuclear matter at zero temperature and definite baryon number density in chiral perturbation theory

The thermal properties of cold dense nuclear matter are investigated with chiral perturbation theory. The evolution curves for the baryon number density, baryon number susceptibility, pressure and the equation of state are obtained. The chiral condensate is calculated and our result shows that when the baryon chemical potential goes beyond $1150 \mathrm{MeV}$, the absolute value of the quark condensate decreases rapidly, which indicates a tendency of chiral restoration.

The generalized second law of thermodynamics in generalized gravity theories

We investigate the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSL) in generalized theories of gravity. We examine the total entropy evolution with time including the horizon entropy, the non-equilibrium entropy production, and the entropy of all matter, field and energy components. We derive a universal condition to protect the generalized second law and study its validity in different gravity theories. In Einstein gravity, (even in the phantom-dominated universe with a Schwarzschild black hole), Lovelock gravity, and braneworld gravity, we show that the condition to keep the GSL can always be satisfied. In $f(R)$ gravity and scalar-tensor gravity, the condition to protect the GSL can also hold because the gravity is always attractive and the effective Newton constant should be approximate constant satisfying the experimental bounds.

Scalar emission in a rotating Gödel black hole

We study the absorption probability and Hawking radiation of the scalar field in the rotating Gödel black hole in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity. We find that Gödel parameter $j$ imprints in the greybody factor and Hawking radiation. It plays a different role from the angular momentum of the black hole in the Hawking radiation and super-radiance. These information can help us know more about rotating Gödel black holes in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.

Quasinormal modes and late-time tails in the background of Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string: scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations

We have studied the quasinormal modes and the late-time tail behaviors of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in the Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string. Although the metric is locally identical to that of the Schwarzschild black hole so that the presence of the string will not imprint in the motion of test particles, we found that quasinormal modes and the late-time tails can reflect physical signatures of the cosmic string. Compared with the scalar and electromagnetic fields, the gravitational perturbation decays slower, which could be more interesting to disclose the string effect in this background.

Stability of BTZ black strings

We study the dynamical stability of the BTZ black string against fermonic and gravitational perturbations. The BTZ black string is not always stable against these perturbations. There exist threshold values for $m^2$ related to the compactification of the extra dimension for fermonic perturbation, scalar part of the gravitational perturbation and the tensor perturbation, respectively. Above the threshold values, perturbations are stable; while below these thresholds, perturbations can be unstable. We find that this non-trivial stability behavior qualitatively agrees with that predicted by a thermodynamical argument, showing that the BTZ black string phase is not the privileged stable phase.

Is graphene on Ru(0001) a nanomesh?

The electronic structure of a single layer graphene on Ru(0001) is compared with that of a single layer hexagonal boron nitride nanomesh on Ru(0001). Both are corrugated sp2 networks and display a pi-band gap at the K point of their 1 x 1 Brillouin zone. Graphene has a distinct Fermi surface which indicates that 0.1 electrons are transferred per 1 x 1 unit cell. Photoemission from adsorbed xenon identifies two distinct Xe 5p1/2 lines, separated by 240 meV, which reveals a corrugated electrostatic potential energy surface. These two Xe species are related to the topography of the system and have different desorption energies.

A preliminary analysis of the energy transfer between the dark sectors of the Universe

We study the mutual interaction between the dark sectors (dark matter and dark energy) of the Universe by resorting to the extended thermodynamics of irreversible processes and constrain the former with supernova type Ia data. As a byproduct, the present dark matter temperature results in good agreement with independent estimates of the temperature of the gas of sterile neutrinos.

Observational constraints on the dark energy and dark matter mutual coupling

We examine different phenomenological interaction models for Dark Energy and Dark Matter by performing statistical joint analysis with observational data arising from the 182 Gold type Ia supernova samples, the shift parameter of the Cosmic Microwave Background given by the three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations, the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and age estimates of 35 galaxies. Including the time-dependent observable, we add sensitivity of measurement and give complementary results for the fitting. The compatibility among three different data sets seem to imply that the coupling between dark energy and dark matter is a small positive value, which satisfies the requirement to solve the coincidence problem and the second law of thermodynamics, being compatible with previous estimates.

Effects of the interaction between dark energy and dark matter on cosmological parameters

We examine the effects of possible phenomenological interactions between dark energy and dark matter on cosmological parameters and their efficiency in solving the coincidence problem. We work with two simple parameterizations of the dynamical dark energy equation of state and the constant dark energy equation of state. Using observational data coming from the new 182 Gold type Ia supernova samples, the shift parameter of the Cosmic Microwave Background given by the three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations, and the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we perform a statistical joint analysis of different forms of phenomenological interactions between dark energy and dark matter.

Le Chatelier-Braun principle in cosmological physics

Assuming that dark energy may be treated as a fluid with a well defined temperature, close to equilibrium, we argue that if nowadays there is a transfer of energy between dark energy and dark matter, it must be such that the latter gains energy from the former and not the other way around.

Hawking radiation in a $d$-dimensional static spherically-symmetric black Hole surrounded by quintessence

We present a solution of Einstein equations with quintessential matter surrounding a $d$-dimensional black hole, whose asymptotic structures are determined by the state of the quintessential matter. We examine the thermodynamics of this black hole and find that the mass of the black hole depends on the equation of state of the quintessence, while the first law is universal. Investigating the Hawking radiation in this black hole background, we observe that the Hawking radiation dominates on the brane in the low-energy regime. For different asymptotic structures caused by the equation of state of the quintessential matter surrounding the black hole, we learn that the influences by the state parameter of the quintessence on Hawking radiation are different.

Greybody Factors for Rotating Black Holes on Codimension-2 Branes

We study the absorption probability and Hawking radiation of the scalar field in the rotating black holes on codimension-2 branes. We find that finite brane tension modifies the standard results in Hawking radiation if compared with the case when brane tension is completely negligible. We observe that the rotation of the black hole brings richer physics. Nonzero angular momentum triggers the super-radiance which becomes stronger when the angular momentum increases. We also find that rotations along different angles influence the result in absorption probability and Hawking radiation. Compared with the black hole rotating orthogonal to the brane, in the background that black hole spins on the brane, its angular momentum brings less super-radiance effect and the brane tension increases the range of frequency to accommodate super-radiance. These information can help us know more about the rotating codimension-2 black holes.

Thermodynamical description of the interaction between holographic dark energy and dark matter

We present a thermodynamical description of the interaction between holographic dark energy and dark matter. If holographic dark energy and dark matter evolve separately, each of them remains in thermodynamic equilibrium. A small interaction between them may be viewed as a stable thermal fluctuation that brings a logarithmic correction to the equilibrium entropy. From this correction we obtain a physical expression for the interaction which is consistent with phenomenological descriptions and passes reasonably well the observational tests.

Thermodynamics on the apparent horizon in generalized gravity theories

We present a general procedure to construct the first law of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon and illustrate its validity by examining it in some extended gravity theories. Applying this procedure, we can describe the thermodynamics on the apparent horizon in Randall-Sundrum braneworld imbedded in a nontrivial bulk. We discuss the mass-like function which was used to link Friedmann equation to the first law of thermodynamics and obtain its special case which gives the generalized Misner-Sharp mass in Lovelock gravity.

Hawking radiation in a Rotating Kaluza-Klein Black Hole with Squashed Horizons

We explore the signature of the extra dimension in the Hawking radiation in a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole with squashed horizons. Comparing with the spherical case, we find that the rotating parameter brings richer physics. We obtain the appropriate size of the extra dimension which can enhance the Hawking radiation and may open a window to detect the extra dimensions.

Quasinormal modes and phase Transition of black holes

We have studied the scalar field as well as the fermonic field perturbations in the background of the massless BTZ black holes. Comparing with the perturbation results in the generic nonrotating BTZ black hole background, we found that the massless BTZ hole contains only normal modes in the perturbations. We argued that this special property reflects that the massless BTZ black hole is a different phase from that of the generic nonrotating BTZ hole.

The transition of equation of state of effective dark energy in the DGP model with bulk contents

We investigate the effect of the bulk contents in the DGP braneworld on the evolution of the universe. We find that although the pure DGP model cannot accommodate the transition of the effective equation of state of dark energy, once the bulk matter T^5_5 is considered, the modified model can realize the w_{eff} crossing -1. However this transition of the equation of state cannot be realized by just considering bulk-brane energy exchange or the GB effect while the bulk matter contribution is not included. T^5_5 plays the major role in the modified DGP model to have the w crossing -1 behavior. We show that our model can describe the super-acceleration of our universe with the equation of state of the effective dark energy and the Hubble parameter in agreement with observations.
