Improved Razumikhin and Krasovskii Stability Criteria for Time-Varying Stochastic Time-Delay Systems

The problem of p-th moment stability for time-varying stochastic time-delay systems with Markovian switching is investigated in this paper. Some novel stability criteria are obtained by applying the generalized Razumikhin and Krasovskii stability theorems. Both p-th moment asymptotic stability and (integral) input-to-state stability are considered based on the notion and properties of uniformly stable functions and the improved comparison principles. The established results show that time-derivatives of the constructed Razumikhin functions and Krasovskii functionals are allowed to be indefinite, which improve the existing results on this topic. By applying the obtained results for stochastic systems, we also analyze briefly the stability of time-varying deterministic time-delay systems. Finally, examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Stability Analysis of Nonlinear Time-Varying Systems by Lyapunov Functions with Indefinite Derivatives

This paper is concerned with stability analysis of nonlinear time-varying systems by using Lyapunov function based approach. The classical Lyapunov stability theorems are generalized in the sense that the time-derivative of the Lyapunov functions are allowed to be indefinite. The stability analysis is accomplished with the help of the scalar stable functions introduced in our previous study. Both asymptotic stability and input-to-state stability are considered. Particularly, for asymptotic stability, several concepts such as uniform and non-uniform asymptotic stability, and uniform and non-uniform exponential stability are studied. The effectiveness of the proposed theorems is illustrated by several numerical examples.

On Stability of the Linearized Spacecraft Attitude Control System

This note is concerned with the stability and stabilization of the linearized spacecraft attitude control system. Necessary and sufficient conditions are respectively provided to guarantee that the considered systems are polynomially stable and stable in the Lyapunov sense. These two classes of conditions guarantee that the linearized spacecraft attitude control system can be respectively stabilized semi-globally and globally by saturated linear state feedback.

Bidirectional selection between two classes in complex social networks

The bidirectional selection between two classes widely emerges in various social lives, such as commercial trading and mate choosing. Until now, the discussions on bidirectional selection in structured human society are quite limited. We demonstrated theoretically that the rate of successfully matching is affected greatly by individuals neighborhoods in social networks, regardless of the type of networks. Furthermore, it is found that the high average degree of networks contributes to increasing rates of successful matches. The matching performance in different types of networks has been quantitatively investigated, revealing that the small-world networks reinforces the matching rate more than scale-free networks at given average degree. In addition, our analysis is consistent with the modeling result, which provides the theoretical understanding of underlying mechanisms of matching in complex networks.

A Model of Two-Way Selection System for Human Behavior

We propose a model of two-way selection system. It appears in the processes like choosing a mate between men and women, making contracts between job hunters and recruiters, and trading between buyers and sellers. In this paper, we propose a model of two-way selection system, and present its analytic solution for the expectation of successful matching total and the regular pattern that the matching rate trends toward an inverse proportion to either the ratio between the two sides or the ratio of the state total to the smaller people number. The proposed model is verified by empirical data of the matchmaking fairs. Results indicate that the model well predicts this typical real-world two- way selection behavior to the bounded error extent, thus it is helpful for understanding the dynamics mechanism of the real-world two-way selection system.

Stability Analysis of Integral Delay Systems with Multiple Delays

This note is concerned with stability analysis of integral delay systems with multiple delays. To study this problem, the well-known Jensen inequality is generalized to the case of multiple terms by introducing an individual slack weighting matrix for each term, which can be optimized to reduce the conservatism. With the help of the multiple Jensen inequalities and by developing a novel linearizing technique, two novel Lyapunov functional based approaches are established to obtain sufficient stability conditions expressed by linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). It is shown that these new conditions are always less conservative than the existing ones. Moreover, by the positive operator theory, a single LMI based condition and a spectral radius based condition are obtained based on an existing sufficient stability condition expressed by coupled LMIs. A numerical example illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Degree-layer theory of network topology

The network topology can be described by the number of nodes and the interconnections among them. The degree of a node in a network is the number of connections it has to other nodes and the degree distribution is the probability distribution of these degrees over the whole network. Therefore, the degree is very important structural parameter of network topology. However, given the number of nodes and the degree of each node in a network, the topology of the network cannot be determined. Therefore, we propose the degree-layer theory of network topology to describe deeply the network topology. First, we propose the concept of degree-tree with the breadth-first search tree. The degrees of all nodes are layered and have a hierarchical structure. Second, the degree-layer theory is described in detail. Two new concepts are defined in the theory. An index is proposed to quantitatively distinguish the two network topologies. It also can quantitatively measure the stability of network topology built by a model mechanism. One theorem is given and proved, furthermore, and one corollary is derived directly from the theorem. Third, the applications of the degree-layer theory are discussed in the ER random network, WS small world network and BA scale-free network, and the influences of the degree distribution on the stability of network topology are studied in the three networks. In conclusion, the degree-layer theory is helpful for accurately describing the network topology, and provides a new starting point for researching the similarity and isomorphism between two network topologies.

Stabilization and Consensus of Linear Systems with Multiple Input Delays by Truncated Pseudo-Predictor Feedback

This paper provides an alternative approach referred to as pseudo-predictor feedback (PPF) for stabilization of linear systems with multiple input delays. Differently from the traditional predictor feedback which is from the model reduction appoint of view, the proposed PPF utilizes the idea of prediction by generalizing the corresponding results for linear systems with a single input delay to the case of multiple input delays. Since the PPF will generally lead to distributed controllers, a truncated pseudopredictor feedback (TPPF) approach is established instead which gives finite dimensional controllers. It is shown that the TPPF can compensate arbitrarily large yet bounded delays as long as the open-loop system is only polynomially unstable. The proposed TPPF approach is then used to solve the consensus problems for multi-agent systems characterized by linear systems with multiple input delays. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The study of neutron spectra in water bath from Pb target irradiated by 250MeV/u protons

The spallation neutrons were produced by the irradiation of Pb with 250 MeV protons. The Pb target was surrounded by water which was used to slow down the emitted neutrons. The moderated neutrons in the water bath were measured by using the resonance detectors of Au, Mn and In with Cd cover. According to the measured activities of the foils, the neutron flux at different resonance energy were deduced and the epithermal neutron spectra were proposed. Corresponding results calculated with the Monte Carlo code MCNPX were compared with the experimental data to check the validity of the code.

Modified Futaki invariant and equivariant Riemann-Roch formula

In this paper, we give a new version of the modified Futaki invariant for a test configuration associated to the soliton action on a Fano manifold. Our version will naturally come from toric test configurations defined by Donaldson for toric manifolds. As an application, we show that the modified $K$-energy is proper for toric invariant Kähler potentials on a toric Fano manifold.

The size distribution, scaling properties and spatial organization of urban clusters: a global and regional perspective

Human development has far-reaching impacts on the surface of the globe. The transformation of natural land cover occurs in different forms and urban growth is one of the most eminent transformative processes. We analyze global land cover data and extract cities as defined by maximally connected urban clusters. The analysis of the city size distribution for all cities on the globe confirms Zipf's law. Moreover, by investigating the percolation properties of the clustering of urban areas we assess the closeness to criticality for various countries. At the critical thresholds, the urban land cover of the countries undergoes a transition from separated clusters to a gigantic component on the country scale. We study the Zipf-exponents as a function of the closeness to percolation and find a systematic decrease with increasing scale, which could be the reason for deviating exponents reported in literature. Moreover, we investigate the average size of the clusters as a function of the proximity to percolation and find country specific behavior. By relating the standard deviation and the average of cluster sizes -- analogous to Taylor's law -- we suggest an alternative way to identify the percolation transition. We calculate spatial correlations of the urban land cover and find long-range correlations. Finally, by relating the areas of cities with population figures we address the global aspect of the allometry of cities, finding an exponent $δ\approx 0.85$, i.e. large cities have lower densities.

Hybrid evolving clique-networks and their communicability

Aiming to understand real-world hierarchical networks whose degree distributions are neither power law nor exponential, we construct a hybrid clique network that includes both homogeneous and inhomogeneous parts, and introduce an inhomogeneity parameter to tune the ratio between the homogeneous part and the inhomogeneous one. We perform Monte-Carlo simulations to study various properties of such a network, including the degree distribution, the average shortest-path-length, the clustering coefficient, the clustering spectrum, and the communicability.

The second Born approximation of electron-argon elastic scattering in a Bichromatic laser field

We study the elastic scattering of atomic argon by electron in the presence of a bichromatic laser field in the second Born approximation. The target atom is approximated by a simple screening potential and the continuum states of the impinging and emitting electrons are described as Volkov states. We evaluate the S-matrix elements numerically. The dependence of differential cross section on the relative phase between the two laser components is presented. The results obtained in the first and second Born approximation are compared and analysed.

Positive Definite Solutions of the Nonlinear Matrix Equation $X+A^{\mathrm{H}}\bar{X}^{-1}A=I$

This paper is concerned with the positive definite solutions to the matrix equation $X+A^{\mathrm{H}}\bar{X}^{-1}A=I$ where $X$ is the unknown and $A$ is a given complex matrix. By introducing and studying a matrix operator on complex matrices, it is shown that the existence of positive definite solutions of this class of nonlinear matrix equations is equivalent to the existence of positive definite solutions of the nonlinear matrix equation $W+B^{\mathrm{T}}W^{-1}B=I$ which has been extensively studied in the literature, where $B$ is a real matrix and is uniquely determined by $A.$ It is also shown that if the considered nonlinear matrix equation has a positive definite solution, then it has the maximal and minimal solutions. Bounds of the positive definite solutions are also established in terms of matrix $A$. Finally some sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for the existence of positive definite solutions of the equations are also proposed.

Toward Solution of Matrix Equation X=Af(X)B+C

This paper studies the solvability, existence of unique solution, closed-form solution and numerical solution of matrix equation $X=Af(X) B+C$ with $f(X) =X^{\mathrm{T}},$ $f(X) =\bar{X}$ and $f(X) =X^{\mathrm{H}},$ where $X$ is the unknown. It is proven that the solvability of these equations is equivalent to the solvability of some auxiliary standard Stein equations in the form of $W=\mathcal{A}W\mathcal{B}+\mathcal{C}$ where the dimensions of the coefficient matrices $\mathcal{A},\mathcal{B}$ and $\mathcal{C}$ are the same as those of the original equation. Closed-form solutions of equation $X=Af(X) B+C$ can then be obtained by utilizing standard results on the standard Stein equation. On the other hand, some generalized Stein iterations and accelerated Stein iterations are proposed to obtain numerical solutions of equation equation $X=Af(X) B+C$. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established to guarantee the convergence of the iterations.
