Smooth Solutions and Discrete Imaginary Mass of the Klein-Gordon Equation in the de Sitter Background

Using methods in the theory of semisimple Lie algebras, we can obtain all smooth solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation on the 4-dimensional de Sitter spacetime (dS^4). The mass of a Klein-Gordon scalar on dS^4 is related to an eigenvalue of the Casimir operator of so(1,4). Thus it is discrete, or quantized. Furthermore, the mass m of a Klein-Gordon scalar on dS^4 is imaginary: m^2 being proportional to -N(N+3), with N >= 0 an integer.

Crossover from Majorana edge to end states in quasi-one-dimensional p-wave superconductors

In a recent work [Potter and Lee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 227003 (2010)], it was demonstrated by means of numerical diagonalization that the Majorana end states can be localized at opposite ends of a sample of an ideal spinless p-wave superconductor with the strip geometry beyond the strict one-dimensional limit. Here we reexamine this issue, and study the topological quantum phase transition in the same system. We give the phase diagrams of the presence of Majorana end modes by using of $Z_{2}$ topological index. It is found that the topological property of a strip geometry will change in an oscillatory way with respect of the sample width.

Theory of magnetoelectric photocurrent generated by direct interband transitions in semiconductor quantum well

A linearly polarized light normally incident on a semiconductor quantum well with spin-orbit coupling may generate pure spin current via direct interband optical transition. An electric photocurrent can be extracted from the pure spin current when an in-plane magnetic field is applied, which has been recently observed in the InGaAs/InAlAs quantum well [Dai et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 246601 (2010)]. Here we present a theoretical study of this magnetoelectric photocurrent effect associated with the interband transition. By employing the density matrix formalism, we show that the photoexcited carrier density has an anisotropic distribution in k space, strongly dependent on the orientation of the electron wavevector and the polarization of the light. This anisotropy provides an intuitive picture of the observed dependence of the photocurrent on the magnetic field and the polarization of the light. We also show that the ratio of the pure spin photocurrent to the magnetoelectric photocurrent is approximately equal to the ratio of the kinetic energy to the Zeeman energy, which enables us to estimate the magnitude of the pure spin photocurrent. The photocurrent density calculated with the help of an anisotropic Rashba model and the Kohn-Luttinger model can produce all three terms in the fitting formula for measured current, with comparable order of magnitude, but discrepancies are still present and further investigation is needed.

The first boundary value problem for Abreu's equation

In this paper we prove the existence and regularity of solutions to the first boundary value problem for Abreu's equation, which is a fourth order nonlinear partial differential equation closely related to the Monge-Ampere equation. The first boundary value problem can be formulated as a variational problem for the energy functional. The existence and uniqueness of maximizers can be obtained by the concavity of the functional. The main ingredients of the paper are the a priori estimates and an approximation result, which enable us to prove that the maximizer is smooth in dimension 2.

Geometries for Possible Kinematics

The algebras for all possible Lorentzian and Euclidean kinematics with $\frak{so}(3)$ isotropy except static ones are re-classified. The geometries for algebras are presented by contraction approach. The relations among the geometries are revealed. Almost all geometries fall into pairs. There exists $t \leftrightarrow 1/(ν^2t)$ correspondence in each pair. In the viewpoint of differential geometry, there are only 9 geometries, which have right signature and geometrical spatial isotropy. They are 3 relativistic geometries, 3 absolute-time geometries, and 3 absolute-space geometries.

Spin-bias driven magnetization reversal and nondestructive detection in a single molecular magnet

The magnetization reversal in a single molecular magnet (SMM) weakly coupled to an electrode with spin-dependent splitting of chemical potentials (spin bias) is theoretically investigated by means of the rate equation. A microscopic mechanism for the reversal is demonstrated by the avalanche dynamics at the reversal point. The magnetization as a function of the spin bias shows hysteresis loops tunable by the gate voltage and varying with temperature. The nondestructive measurement to the orientation of giant spin in SMM is presented by measuring the fully polarized electric current in the response to a small spin bias. For Mn$_{12}$ac molecule, its small transverse anisotropy only slightly violates the results above. The situation when there is an angle between the easy axis of the SMM and the spin quantization direction of the electrode is also studied.

The Principle of Relativity and Special Relativity Triple

Based on the principle of relativity and the postulate on universal invariant constants ($c,l$) as well as Einstein's isotropy conditions, three kinds of special relativity form a triple with a common Lorentz group as isotropy group under full Umov-Weyl-Fock-Lorentz transformations among inertial motions.

The Principle of Relativity, Kinematics and Algebraic Relations

Based on the principle of relativity and the postulate on universal invariant constants (c,l), all possible kinematics can be set up with sub-symmetries of the Umov-Weyl-Fock transformations for the inertial motions. Further, in the combinatory approach, all these symmetries are intrinsically related to each other, e.g. to the very important dS kinematics for the cosmic scale physics.

Phase coherent control in electron-argon scattering in a bichromatic laser field

We study the elastic scattering of atomic argon by a electron in the presence of a bichromatic laser field. The numerical calculation is done in the first Born approximation (FBA) for a simple screening electric potential. With the help of numerical results we explore the dependence of the differential cross sections (DCS) on the relative phase between the two components of the radiation field and discuss the influence of the number of photons exchanged on the phase-dependence effect. Moreover, we also discuss the numerical results of the DCS for different scattering angles and impact energies.

Finite size effects of helical edge states in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells

The solutions for the helical edge states for an effective continuum model for the quantum spin Hall effect in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells are presented. For a sample of a large size, the solution gives the linear dispersion for the edge states. However, in a finite strip geometry, the edge states at two sides will couple with each other, which leads to a finite energy gap in the spectra. The gap decays in an exponential law of the width of sample. The magnetic field dependence of the edge states illustrates the difference of the edge states from those of a conventional quantum Hall strip of two-dimensional electron gas.

Current-induced Spin Polarization in Two-Dimensional Hole Gas

We investigate the current-induced spin polarization in the two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) with the structure inversion asymmetry. By using the perturbation theory, we re-derive the effective $k$-cubic Rashba Hamiltonian for 2DHG and the generalized spin operators accordingly. Then based on the linear response theory we calculate the current-induced spin polarization both analytically and numerically with the disorder effect considered. We have found that, quite different from the two-dimensional electron gas, the spin polarization in 2DHG depends linearly on Fermi energy in the low doping regime, and with increasing Fermi energy, the spin polarization may be suppressed and even changes its sign. We predict a pronounced peak of the spin polarization in 2DHG once the Fermi level is somewhere between minimum points of two spin-split branches of the lowest light-hole subband. We discuss the possibility of measurements in experiments as regards the temperature and the width of quantum wells.

Snyder's Quantized Space-time and De Sitter Special Relativity

There is a one-to-one correspondence between Snyder's model in de Sitter space of momenta and the \dS-invariant special relativity. This indicates that physics at the Planck length $\ell_P$ and the scale $R=3/Λ$ should be dual to each other and there is in-between gravity of local \dS-invariance characterized by a dimensionless coupling constant $g=\ell_P/R\sim 10^{-61}$.

Newton-Hooke Limit of Beltrami-de Sitter Spacetime, Principles of Galilei-Hooke's Relativity and Postulate on Newton-Hooke Universal Time

Based on the Beltrami-de Sitter spacetime, we present the Newton-Hooke model under the Newton-Hooke contraction of the $BdS$ spacetime with respect to the transformation group, algebra and geometry. It is shown that in Newton-Hooke space-time, there are inertial-type coordinate systems and inertial-type observers, which move along straight lines with uniform velocity. And they are invariant under the Newton-Hooke group. In order to determine uniquely the Newton-Hooke limit, we propose the Galilei-Hooke's relativity principle as well as the postulate on Newton-Hooke universal time. All results are readily extended to the Newton-Hooke model as a contraction of Beltrami-anti-de Sitter spacetime with negative cosmological constant.

Snyder's Model -- de Sitter Special Relativity Duality and de Sitter Gravity

Between Snyder's quantized space-time model in de Sitter space of momenta and the \dS special relativity on \dS-spacetime of radius $R$ with Beltrami coordinates, there is a one-to-one dual correspondence supported by a minimum uncertainty-like argument. Together with Planck length $\ell_P$, $R\simeq (3/Λ)^{1/2}$ should be a fundamental constant. They lead to a dimensionless constant $g{\sim\ell_PR^{-1}}=(G\hbar c^{-3}Λ/3)^{1/2}\sim 10^{-61}$. These indicate that physics at these two scales should be dual to each other and there is in-between gravity of local \dS-invariance characterized by $g$. A simple model of \dS-gravity with a gauge-like action on umbilical manifolds may show these characters. It can pass the observation tests and support the duality.

A note on the $K$-stability on toric manifolds

In this note, we prove that on polarized toric manifolds the relative $K$-stability with respect to Donaldson's toric degenerations is a necessary condition for the existence of Calabi's extremal metrics, and also we show that the modified $K$-energy is proper in the space of $G_0$-invariant Kähler metrics for the case of toric surfaces which admit the extremal metrics.

Topological quantum phase transition and the Berry phase near the Fermi surface in hole-doped quantum wells

We propose a topological quantum phase transition for quantum states with different Berry phases in hole-doped III-V semiconductor quantum wells with bulk and structure inversion asymmetry. The Berry phase of the occupied Bloch states can be characteristic of topological metallic states. It is found that the adjustment of thickness of the quantum well may cause a transition of Berry phase in two-dimensional hole gas. Correspondingly, the jump of spin Hall conductivity accompanies the change of the Berry phase. This property is robust against the impurity potentials in the system. Experimental detection of this topological quantum phase transition is discussed.

Spin transverse force and quantum transverse transport

We present a brief review on spin transverse force, which exerts on the spin as the electron is moving in an electric field. This force, analogue to the Lorentz force on electron charge, is perpendicular to the electric field and spin current carried by the electron. The force stems from the spin-orbit coupling of electrons as a relativistic quantum effect, and could be used to understand the Zitterbewegung of electron wave packet and the quantum transverse transport of electron in a heuristic way.

The Triality of Conformal Extensions of Three Kinds of Special Relativity

The conformal extensions of three kinds of special relativity with ISO(1,3)/SO(1,4)/SO(2,3) invariance on Mink/dS/AdS space, respectively, are realized on an SO(2,4)/Z_2 invariant projective null cone [N] as the (projective) boundary of the 5-d AdS-space. The relations among the conformal Mink/dS/AdS spaces, the motions of light signals and the conformal field theories on them can be given. Thus, there should be a triality for these conformal issues and the conjectured AdS/CFT correspondence.
