Interacting photon pulses in Rydberg medium

The understanding of dynamical evolutions of interacting photon pulses in Rydberg atomic ensemble is the prerequisite for realizing quantum devices with such system. We present an approach that efficiently simulates the dynamical processes, using a set of local functions we construct to reflect the profiles of narrowband pulses. For two counter-propagating photon pulses, our approach predicts the distinct phenomena from the widely concerned Rydberg blockade to the previously less noticed significant absorption in the anomalous dispersion regime, which can occur by respectively setting the pulse frequency to the appropriate values. Our numerical simulations also demonstrate how spatially extending photon pulses become deformed under realistic non-uniform interaction over their distributions.

Dynamical Phonon Laser in Coupled Active-Passive Microresonators

Effective transition between the population-inverted optical eigenmodes of two coupled microcavities carrying mechanical oscillation realizes a phonon analogue of optical two-level laser. By providing an approach that linearizes the dynamical equations of weak nonlinear systems without relying on their steady states, we study such phonon laser action as a realistic dynamical process, which exhibits time-dependent stimulated phonon field amplification especially when one of the cavities is added with optical gain medium. The approach we present explicitly gives the conditions for the optimum phonon lasing, and thermal noise is found to be capable of facilitating the phonon laser action significantly.

Proposal of Readout Electronics for CSNS-WNS BaF2 Detector

BaF2 (Barium fluoride) detector is one of the experiment facilities at the under construction CSNS-WNS (White Neutron Source at China Spallation Neutron Source). It is designed for precisely measuring (n,gamma) cross section with total 92 crystal elements and completely 4 pi steradian coverage. In this proposal for readout electronics, waveform digitizing technique with 1GSps sampling rate and 12-bit resolution is adopted to precisely capture the detector signal. To solve the problem of massive data readout and processing, the readout electronics system is designed into a distributed architecture with 4 PXIe crates. The digitized detector's signal is concentrated to PXIe crate controller through PCIe bus on backplane and transmitted to data acquisition system over Gigabit Ethernet in parallel. Besides, clock and trigger can be fanned out synchronously to each electronic channel over a high-precision distributing network. Test results showed that the prototype of the readout electronics system achieved good performance and cooperated well.

On zeros of some entire functions

Let \begin{equation*} A_{q}^{(α)}(a;z) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{(a;q)_{k} q^{αk^2} z^k} {(q;q)_{k}}, \end{equation*} where $α>0,~0<q<1.$ In a paper of Ruiming Zhang, he asked under what conditions the zeros of the entire function $A_{q}^{(α)}(a;z)$ are all real and established some results on the zeros of $A_{q}^{(α)}(a;z)$ which present a partial answer to that question. In the present paper, we will set up some results on certain entire functions which includes that $A_{q}^{(α)}(q^l;z),~l\geq 2$ has only infinitely many negative zeros that gives a partial answer to Zhang's question. In addition, we establish some results on zeros of certain entire functions involving the Rogers-Szegő polynomials and the Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials.

Clock Distributing for BaF2 Readout Electronics at CSNS-WNS

aF2 (Barium Fluoride) detector array is designed for the measurement of (n,γ) cross section precisely at CSNS-WNS (white neutron source at China Spallation Neutron Source). It is a 4πsolid angle-shaped detector array consisting of 92 BaF2 crystal elements. To discriminate signals from BaF2 detector, pulse shape discrimination methodology is used, which is supported by waveform digitization technique. There are total 92 channels for digitizing. The precision and synchronization of clock distribution restricts the performance of waveform digitizing. In this paper, the clock prototype for BaF2 readout electronics at CSNS-WNS is introduced. It is based on PXIe platform and has a twin-stage tree topology. In the first stage, clock is distributed from the tree root to each PXIe crate synchronously through coaxial cable over long distance, while in the second stage, clock is further distributed to each electronic module through PXIe dedicated differential star bus. With the help of this topology, each tree node can fan out up to 20 clocks with 3U size. Test result shows the clock jitter is less than 20ps, which can meet the requirement of BaF2 readout electronics. Besides, this clock system has advantages of high density, simplicity, scalability and cost saving, which makes it can be used in other applications of clock distributing preciously.

A generalized unknown qubit discriminator

We discuss a state discriminator that unambiguously distinguishes between two quantum registers prepared with multiple copies of two unknown qubits. This device achieves the optimal performance by von Neumann measurement and general POVM in different ranges of the input preparation probabilities, respectively, and in the limit of very large program registers the optimal measurement reduces to only von Neumann measurements.

Optomechanical Entanglement under Pulse Drive

We report a study of optomechanical entanglement under the drive of one or a series of laser pulses with arbitrary detuning and different pulse shapes. Because of the non-existence of system steady state under pulsed driving field, we adopt a different approach from the standard treatment to optomechanical entanglement. The situation of the entanglement evolution in high temperature is also discussed.

Storage and retrieval of photons under their mutual interaction in Rydberg medium

Stopping and regenerating a pair of single-photon pulses at adjacent locations in coherently prepared Rydberg atomic ensembles are significantly affected by their effective interaction mediated by Rydberg excitations, and the similar processes can differ notably from the one exhibiting the common Rydberg blockade as with the stationary propagation of multi-photon light beams in the same medium. Based on the complete dynamics, we reveal the detailed features in such processes by finding how the profiles of the involved quantum fields evolve in various situations. The findings help to determine the proper regimes for implementing photonic gates and transistors. In addition, we discuss the non-adiabatic corrections associated with quickly changing control fields, and illustrate a method that restores the photon pulses' original amplitude during their retrieval unless they are heavily damped before storage.

Highly Efficient Processing Multi-photon States

How to implement multi-qubit gates is an important problem in quantum information processing. Based on cross phase modulation, we present an approach to realizing a family of multi-qubit gates that deterministically operate on single photons as the qubits. A general $n$-qubit unitary operation is a typical example of these gates. The approach greatly relax the requirement on the resources, such as the ancilla photons and coherent beams, as well as the number of operations on the qubits. The improvement in this framework may facilitate large scale quantum information processing.

Quantum noise effects with Kerr nonlinearity enhancement in coupled gain-loss waveguides

It is generally difficult to study the dynamical properties of a quantum system with both inherent quantum noises and non-perturbative nonlinearity. Due to the possibly drastic intensity increase of an input coherent light in the gain-loss waveguide couplers with parity-time (PT) symmetry, the Kerr effect from a nonlinearity added into the systems can be greatly enhanced, and is expected to create the macroscopic entangled states of the output light fields with huge photon numbers. Meanwhile, the quantum noises also coexist with the amplification and dissipation of the light fields. Under the interplay between the quantum noises and nonlinearity, the quantum dynamical behaviors of the systems become rather complicated. However, the important quantum noise effects have been mostly neglected in the previous studies about nonlinear PT-symmetric systems. Here we present a solution to this non-perturbative quantum nonlinear problem, showing the real-time evolution of the system observables. The enhanced Kerr nonlinearity is found to give rise to a previously unknown decoherence effect that is irrelevant to the quantum noises, and imposes a limit on the emergence of macroscopic nonclassicality. In contrast to what happen in the linear systems, the quantum noises exert significant impact on the system dynamics, and can create the nonclassical light field states in conjunction with the enhanced Kerr nonlinearity. This first study on the noise involved quantum nonlinear dynamics of the coupled gain-loss waveguides can help to better understand the quantum noise effects in the broad nonlinear systems.

Cyclic permutation-time symmetric structure with coupled gain-loss microcavities

We study the coupled even number of microcavities with the balanced gain and loss between any pair of their neighboring components. The effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for such structure has the cyclic permutation-time symmetry with respect to the cavity modes, and this symmetry determines the patterns of the dynamical evolutions of the cavity modes. The systems also have multiple exceptional points for the degeneracy of the existing supermodes, exhibiting the "phase transition" of system dynamics across these exceptional points. We illustrate the quantum dynamical properties of the systems with the evolutions of cavity photon numbers and correlation functions. Moreover, we demonstrate the effects of the quantum noises accompanying the amplification and dissipation of the cavity modes. The reciprocal light transportation predicted with the effective non-Hermitian models for the similar couplers is violated by the unavoidable quantum noises.

Fully Quantum Approach to Optomechanical Entanglement

The radiation pressure induced coupling between an optical cavity field and a mechanical oscillator can create entanglement between them. In previous works this entanglement was treated as that of the quantum fluctuations of the cavity and mechanical modes around their classical mean values. Here we provide a fully quantum approach to optomechanical entanglement, which goes beyond the approximation of classical mean motion plus quantum fluctuation, and applies to arbitrary cavity drive. We illustrate the real-time evolution of optomechanical entanglement under drive of arbitrary detuning to show the existence of high, robust and stable entanglement in blue detuned regime, and highlight the quantum noise effects that can cause entanglement sudden death and revival.

Movement Prediction Using Accelerometers in a Human Population

We introduce statistical methods for predicting the types of human activity at sub-second resolution using triaxial accelerometry data. The major innovation is that we use labeled activity data from some subjects to predict the activity labels of other subjects. To achieve this, we normalize the data across subjects by matching the standing up and lying down portions of triaxial accelerometry data. This is necessary to account for differences between the variability in the position of the device relative to gravity, which are induced by body shape and size as well as by the ambiguous definition of device placement. We also normalize the data at the device level to ensure that the magnitude of the signal at rest is similar across devices. After normalization we use overlapping movelets (segments of triaxial accelerometry time series) extracted from some of the subjects to predict the movement type of the other subjects. The problem was motivated by and is applied to a laboratory study of 20 older participants who performed different activities while wearing accelerometers at the hip. Prediction results based on other people's labeled dictionaries of activity performed almost as well as those obtained using their own labeled dictionaries. These findings indicate that prediction of activity types for data collected during natural activities of daily living may actually be possible.

Two-photon dynamics in coherent Rydberg atomic ensemble

We study the interaction of two photons in a Rydberg atomic ensemble under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency, combining a semi-classical approach for pulse propagation and a complete quantum treatment for quantum state evolution. We find that the blockade regime is not suitable for implementing photon-photon cross-phase modulation due to pulse absorption and dispersion. However, approximately ideal cross-phase modulation can be realized based on relatively weak interactions, with counter-propagating and transversely separated pulses.

Generation of arbitrary symmetric entangled states with conditional linear optical coupling

An approach for generating the entangled photonic states |F1,F2>+|F2,F1> from two arbitrary states |F1> and |F2> is proposed. The protocol is implemented by the conditionally induced beam-splitter coupling which leads to the selective swapping between two photonic modes. Such coupling occurs in a quantum system prepared in the superposition of two ground states with only one of them being involved in the swapping. All the entangled states in the category, such as entangled pairs of coherent states or Fock states (N00N states), can be efficiently produced in the same way by this method.

Efficient graph state generation and artificial error detection

How to generate photonic cluster state or graph state efficiently is the main problem in optical measurement-based quantum computation. Assisted by the cross phase modulation technique, we propose an efficient scheme to realize the cascade CZ operation, which could be used to generate universal cluster state, with the controlled-path gate as element operation. Especially, for the wheel cluster state, the generation processes are obviously simpler than the former approaches. Moreover, we consider the artificial error that one forgot to operate one or some single photons during the generation processes cross-type, star-type graph state. This error likely occurs in the large scale of graph state generation with one-by-one pattern and is firstly considered in this paper. With the present approach, it is possible to judge whether all the involved single photons are connected as desired or not, i.e., detect the artificial error with the success probability 1/2.

Quantum Optomechanics beyond Linearization

The quantum dynamics of optomechanical systems was mostly studied for their fluctuations around classical steady states. We present a theoretical approach to determining the system observables of optomechanical systems as genuine quantum objects, for example, a coupled quantum mechanical oscillator to a cavity single photon. In this approach we study the dynamics of such systems in strong coupling regime. We find that, under strong optomechanical coupling, steady quantum states of optomechanical systems driven by continuous-wave single photons exhibit periodic oscillation and cavity noise considerably affects system observables.

Continuous-mode effects and photon-photon phase gate performance

The effects arising from the inherent continuous-mode nature of photonic pulses were poorly understood but significantly influence the performance of quantum devices employing photonic pulse interaction in nonlinear media. Such effects include the entanglement between the continuous wave-vector modes due to pulse interaction as well as the consequence of a finite system bandwidth. We present the first analysis on these effects for interactions between single-photon pulses, demonstrating their impact on the performance of quantum phase gates based on such process. Our study clarifies a realistic picture of this type of quantum devices.
