Leptogenesis from Additional Higgs Doublets

Leptogenesis may be induced by the mixing of extra Higgs doublets with experimentally accessible masses. This mechanism relies on diagrammatic cuts that are kinematically forbidden in the vacuum but contribute at finite temperature. A resonant enhancement of the asymmetry occurs generically provided the dimensionless Yukawa and self-interactions are suppressed compared to those of the Standard Model Higgs field. This is in contrast to typical scenarios of Resonant Leptogenesis, where the asymmetry is enhanced by imposing a degeneracy of singlet neutrino masses.

Effective Theory of Resonant Leptogenesis in the Closed-Time-Path Approach

We describe mixing scalar particles and Majorana fermions using Closed-Time-Path methods. From the Kadanoff-Baym equations, we obtain the charge asymmetry, that is generated from decays and inverse decays of the mixing particles. Within one single formalism, we thereby treat Leptogenesis from oscillations and recover as well the standard results for the asymmetry in Resonant Leptogenesis, which apply when the oscillation frequency is much larger than the decay rate. Analytic solutions for two mixing neutral particles in a constant-temperature background illustrate our results qualitatively. We also perform the modification of the kinetic equations that is necessary in order to take account of the expansion of the Universe and the washout of the asymmetry.

Finite Width in out-of-Equilibrium Propagators and Kinetic Theory

We derive solutions to the Schwinger-Dyson equations on the Closed-Time-Path for a scalar field in the limit where backreaction is neglected. In Wigner space, the two-point Wightman functions have the curious property that the equilibrium component has a finite width, while the out-of equilibrium component has zero width. This feature is confirmed in a numerical simulation for scalar field theory with quartic interactions. When substituting these solutions into the collision term, we observe that an expansion including terms of all orders in gradients leads to an effective finite-width. Besides, we observe no breakdown of perturbation theory, that is sometimes associated with pinch singularities. The effective width is identical with the width of the equilibrium component. Therefore, reconciliation between the zero-width behaviour and the usual notion in kinetic theory, that the out-of-equilibrium contributions have a finite width as well, is achieved. This result may also be viewed as a generalisation of the fluctuation-dissipation relation to out-of-equilibrium systems with negligible backreaction.

Self Regulation of Infrared Correlations for Massless Scalar Fields during Inflation

Self-energies of a minimally coupled scalar field with quartic and trilinear interactions are calculated in a de Sitter background, using a position space propagator. For quartic interactions, we recover earlier results for the seagull diagram, namely that it contributes an effective mass for the scalar field at leading order in the infrared enhancement in a steady-state de Sitter background. We further show that the sunset diagram also contributes to this effective mass and argue that these two contributions are sufficient in order to determine a self-consistent dynamical mass. In addition, trilinear interactions also induce a dynamical mass for the scalar field which we calculate. Since an interacting scalar field in de Sitter acquires a dynamical mass through these loop corrections, the infrared divergences of the two-point correlator are naturally self-regulated.

Leptogenesis: The Other Cuts

For standard leptogenesis from the decay of singlet right-handed neutrinos, we derive source terms for the lepton asymmetry that are present in a finite density background but absent in the vacuum. These arise from cuts through the vertex correction to the decay asymmetry, where in the loop either the Higgs boson and the right-handed neutrino or the left-handed lepton and the right-handed neutrino are simultaneously on shell. We evaluate the source terms numerically and use them to calculate the lepton asymmetry for illustrative points in parameter space, where we consider only two right-handed neutrinos for simplicity. Compared to calculations where only the standard cut through the propagators of left-handed lepton and Higgs boson is included, sizable corrections arise when the masses of the right-handed neutrinos are of the same order, but the new sources are found to be most relevant when the decaying right-handed neutrino is heavier than the one in the loop. In that situation, they can yield the dominant contribution to the lepton asymmetry.

Flavoured Leptogenesis in the CTP Formalism

Within the Closed Time Path (CTP) framework, we derive kinetic equations for particle distribution functions that describe leptogenesis in the presence of several lepton flavours. These flavours have different Standard-Model Yukawa couplings, which induce flavour-sensitive scattering processes and thermal dispersion relations. Kinetic equilibrium, which is rapidly established and maintained via gauge interactions, allows to simplify these equations to kinetic equations for the matrix of lepton charge densities. In performing this simplification, we notice that the rapid flavour-blind gauge interactions damp the flavour oscillations of the leptons. Leptogenesis turns out to be in the parametric regime where the flavour oscillations are overdamped and flavour decoherence is mainly induced by flavour sensitive scatterings. We solve the kinetic equations for the lepton number densities numerically and show that they interpolate between the unflavoured and the fully flavoured regimes within the intermediate parametric region, where neither of these limits is applicable.

Finite Number Density Corrections to Leptogenesis

We derive and solve kinetic equations for leptogenesis within the Closed Time Path (CTP) formalism. It is particularly emphasised how the procedure of real intermediate state subtraction familiar from the Boltzmann approach is realised within the CTP framework; and we show how in time-independent situations, no lepton asymmetry emerges, in accordance with the CPT-theorem. The CTP approach provides new quantum statistical corrections from evaluating the loop integrals. These lead to an enhancement of the asymmetry that is originating from the Bose statistics of the Higgs particles. To quantify this effect, we define and evaluate an effective CP-violating parameter. We also solve the kinetic equations and show explicitly that the new quantum statistical corrections can be neglected in the strong washout regime, while, depending on initial conditions, they can be very sizable for weak washout.

Tight constraints on F- and D-term hybrid inflation scenarios

We use present cosmological data from the cosmic microwave background, large-scale structure and deuterium at high redshifts to constrain supersymmetric F- and D-term hybrid inflation scenarios including possible contributions to the CMB anisotropies from cosmic strings. Using two different realizations of the cosmic string spectrum, we find that the minimal version of the D-term model is ruled out at high significance. F-term models are also in tension with the data. We also discuss possible non-minimal variants of the models.

Supergauge interactions and electroweak baryogenesis

We present a complete treatment of the diffusion processes for supersymmetric electroweak baryogenesis that characterizes transport dynamics ahead of the phase transition bubble wall within the symmetric phase. In particular, we generalize existing approaches to distinguish between chemical potentials of particles and their superpartners. This allows us to test the assumption of superequilibrium (equal chemical potentials for particles and sparticles) that has usually been made in earlier studies. We show that in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, superequilibrium is generically maintained -- even in the absence of fast supergauge interactions -- due to the presence of Yukawa interactions. We provide both analytic arguments as well as illustrative numerical examples. We also extend the latter to regions where analytical approximations are not available since down-type Yukawa couplings or supergauge interactions only incompletely equilibrate. We further comment on cases of broken superequilibrium wherein a heavy superpartner decouples from the electroweak plasma, causing a kinematic bottleneck in the chain of equilibrating reactions. Such situations may be relevant for baryogenesis within extensions of the MSSM. We also provide a compendium of inputs required to characterize the symmetric phase transport dynamics.

Lepton-mediated electroweak baryogenesis

We investigate the impact of the tau and bottom Yukawa couplings on the transport dynamics for electroweak baryogenesis in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. Although it has generally been assumed in the literature that all Yukawa interactions except those involving the top quark are negligible, we find that the tau and bottom Yukawa interaction rates are too fast to be neglected. We identify an illustrative "lepton-mediated electroweak baryogenesis" scenario in which the baryon asymmetry is induced mainly through the presence of a left-handed leptonic charge. We derive analytic formulae for the computation of the baryon asymmetry that, in light of these effects, are qualitatively different from those in the established literature. In this scenario, for fixed CP-violating phases, the baryon asymmetry has opposite sign compared to that calculated using established formulae.

Separation of Equilibration Time-Scales in the Gradient Expansion

We study thermalization by applying gradient expansion to the Kadanoff-Baym equations of the 2PI effective action to two-loop in a theory with Dirac fermions coupled to scalars. In addition to those chemical potentials which equilibrate in the on-shell limit, we identify modes which are conserved in this approximation, but which relax when off-shell effects are taken into account. This implies that chemical equilibration does not require higher loop contributions to the effective action and is compatible with the gradient expansion. We explicitly calculate the damping time-scales of both, on- and off-shell, chemical equilibration rates. It is shown that off-shell equilibration is suppressed by the thermal width of the particles in the plasma, which explains the separation of on- and off-shell chemical equilibration time-scales.

Yukawa Interactions and Supersymmetric Electroweak Baryogenesis

We analyze the quantum transport equations for supersymmetric electroweak baryogenesis including previously neglected bottom and tau Yukawa interactions and show that they imply the presence of a previously unrecognized dependence of the cosmic baryon asymmetry on the spectrum of third generation quark and lepton superpartners. For fixed values of the CP-violating phases in the supersymmetric theory, the baryon asymmetry can vary in both magnitude and sign as a result of the squark and slepton mass dependence. For light, right-handed top and bottom quark superpartners, the baryon number creation can be driven primarily by interactions involving third generation leptons and their superpartners.

The Effect of the Sparticle Mass Spectrum on the Conversion of B-L to B

In the context of many leptogenesis and baryogenesis scenarios, B-L (baryon minus the lepton number) is converted into B (baryon number) by non-perturbative B+L violating operators in the SU(2)_L sector. We correct a common misconversion of B-L to B in the literature in the context of supersymmetry. More specifically, kinematic effects associated with the sparticle masses can be generically important (typically a factor of 2/3 correction in mSUGRA scenarios), and in some cases, it may even flip the sign between B-L and B. We give explicit formulae for converting B-L to B for temperatures approaching the electroweak phase transition temperature from above. Enhancements of B are also possible, leading to a mild relaxation of the reheating temperature bounds coming from gravitino constraints.

Textures and Semi-Local Strings in SUSY Hybrid Inflation

Global topological defects may account for the large cold spot observed in the Cosmic Microwave Background. We explore possibilities of constructing models of supersymmetric F-term hybrid inflation, where the waterfall fields are globally SU(2)-symmetric. In contrast to the case where SU(2) is gauged, there arise Goldstone bosons and additional moduli, which are lifted only by masses of soft-supersymmetry breaking scale. The model predicts the existence of global textures, which can become semi-local strings if the waterfall fields are gauged under U(1)_X. Gravitino overproduction can be avoided if reheating proceeds via the light SU(2)-modes or right-handed sneutrinos. For values of the inflaton- waterfall coupling >=10^-4, the symmetry breaking scale imposed by normalisation of the power spectrum generated from inflation coincides with the energy scale required to explain the most prominent of the cold spots. In this case, the spectrum of density fluctuations is close to scale-invariant which can be reconciled with measurements of the power spectrum by the inclusion of the sub-dominant component due to the topological defects.

Constraints on Brane Inflation and Cosmic Strings

By considering simple, but representative, models of brane inflation from a single brane-antibrane pair in the slow roll regime, we provide constraints on the parameters of the theory imposed by measurements of the CMB anisotropies by WMAP including a cosmic string component. We find that inclusion of the string component is critical in constraining parameters. In the most general model studied, which includes an inflaton mass term, as well as the brane-antibrane attraction, values n_s < 1.02 are compatible with the data at 95 % confidence level. We are also able to constrain the volume of internal manifold (modulo factors dependent on the warp factor) and the value of the inflaton field to be less than 0.66M_P at horizon exit. We also investigate models with a mass term. These observational considerations suggest that such models have r < 2*10^-5, which can only be circumvented in the fast roll regime, or by increasing the number of antibranes. Such a value of r would not be detectable in CMB polarization experiment likely in the near future, but the B-mode signal from the cosmic strings could be detectable. We present forecasts of what a similar analysis using PLANCK data would yield and find that it should be possible to rule out Gμ> 6.5*10^-8 using just the TT, TE and EE power spectra.

Baryogenesis from the amplification of vacuum fluctuations during inflation

We propose that the baryon asymmetry of the Universe may originate from the amplification of quantum fluctuations of a light complex scalar field during inflation. CP-violation is sourced by complex mass terms, which are smaller than the Hubble rate, as well as non-standard kinetic terms. We find that, when assuming 60 e-folds of inflation, an asymmetry in accordance with observation can result for models where the energy scale of inflation is of the order of 10^16 GeV. Lower scales may be achieved when assuming substantially larger amounts of e-folds.

Radiative Lifting of Flat Directions of the MSSM in de Sitter Background

The one-loop effective potential for a charged scalar field in de Sitter background is studied. We derive an approximate form for the gauge boson propagator with a general covariant gauge-fixing parameter ξ. This expression is used to derive an explicitly gauge-invariant effective potential, which agrees with earlier results obtained in Landau gauge. Adding the scalar- and fermion-loop contributions, that arise in a supersymmetric Higgs model, we find that the effective potential is vanishing to first order in the Hubble rate H^2. The contribution due to a chiral multiplet running in the loop is however non-vanishing. When applied to a flat direction of the MSSM with VEV w, a logarithmically running correction of order $h^2 H^2 w^2$ arises, where h is Yukawa coupling. This is of particular importance for D-term inflation or models endowed with a Heisenberg symmetry, where Hubble scale mass terms for flat directions from supergravity corrections are absent.
