Particle number in kinetic theory

We provide a derivation for the particle number densities on phase space for scalar and fermionic fields in terms of Wigner functions. Our expressions satisfy the desired properties: for bosons the particle number is positive, for fermions it lies in the interval between zero and one, and both are consistent with thermal field theory. As applications we consider the Bunch-Davies vacuum and fermionic preheating after inflation.

Anatomy of F_D-Term Hybrid Inflation

We analyze the cosmological implications of F-term hybrid inflation with a subdominant Fayet--Iliopoulos D-term whose presence explicitly breaks a D-parity in the inflaton-waterfall sector. This scenario of inflation, which is called F_D-term hybrid model for brevity, can naturally predict lepton number violation at the electroweak scale, by tying the mu-parameter of the MSSM to an SO(3)-symmetric Majorana mass m_N, via the vacuum expectation value of the inflaton field. We show how a negative Hubble-induced mass term in a next-to-minimal extension of supergravity helps to accommodate the present CMB data and considerably weaken the strict constraints on the theoretical parameters, resulting from cosmic string effects on the power spectrum P_R. The usual gravitino overabundance constraint may be significantly relaxed in this model, once the enormous entropy release from the late decays of the ultraheavy waterfall gauge particles is properly considered. As the Universe enters a second thermalization phase involving a very low reheat temperature, which might be as low as about 0.3 TeV, thermal electroweak-scale resonant leptogenesis provides a viable mechanism for successful baryogenesis, while thermal right-handed sneutrinos emerge as new possible candidates for solving the cold dark matter problem. In addition, we discuss grand unified theory realizations of F_D-term hybrid inflation devoid of cosmic strings and monopoles, based on the complete breaking of an SU(2) subgroup. The F_D-term hybrid model offers rich particle-physics phenomenology, which could be probed at high-energy colliders, as well as in low-energy experiments of lepton flavour or number violation.

Hybrid Inflation Exit through Tunneling

For hybrid inflationary potentials, we derive the tunneling rate from field configurations along the flat direction towards the waterfall regime. This process competes with the classically rolling evolution of the scalar fields and needs to be strongly subdominant for phenomenologically viable models. Tunneling may exclude models with a mass scale below 10^12 GeV, but can be suppressed by small values of the coupling constants. We find that tunneling is negligible for those models, which do not require fine tuning in order to cancel radiative corrections, in particular for GUT-scale SUSY inflation. In contrast, electroweak scale hybrid inflation is not viable, unless the inflaton-waterfall field coupling is smaller than approximately 10^-11.

Constraints on Supersymmetric Models of Hybrid Inflation

We point out that the inclusion of a string component contributing around 5% to the CMB power spectrum amplitude on large scales can increase the preferred value of the spectral index n_s of density fluctuations measured by CMB experiments. While this finding applies to any cosmological scenario involving strings, we consider in particular models of supersymmetric hybrid inflation, which predict n_s >= 0.98, in tension with the CMB data when strings are not included. Using MCMC analysis we constrain the parameter space allowed for F- and D-term inflation. For the F-term model, using minimal supergravity corrections, we find that \logκ= -2.34\pm 0.38 and M= (0.518\pm 0.059) * 10^16 GeV. The inclusion of non-minimal supergravity corrections can modify these values somewhat. In the corresponding analysis for D-term inflation, we find \logκ= -4.24\pm 0.19 and m_FI= (0.245\pm 0.031) * 10^16 GeV. Under the assumption that these models are correct, these results represent precision measurements of important parameters of a Grand Unified Theory. We consider the possible uncertainties in our measurements and additional constraints on the scenario from the stochastic background of gravitational waves produced by the strings. The best-fitting model predicts a B-mode polarization signal \approx 0.3 μK rms peaking at l \approx 1000. This is of comparable amplitude to the expected signal due to gravitational lensing of the adiabatic E-mode signal on these scales.

Ultraviolet Regularisation in de Sitter Space

The ultraviolet regularisation of Yukawa theory in de Sitter space is considered. We rederive the one-loop effective Candelas-Raine potentials, such that they agree with the corresponding Coleman-Weinberg potentials in flat space. Within supersymmetry, this provides a mechanism for the lifting of flat directions during inflation. For the purpose of calculating loop integrals, we employ the dimensional regularisation procedure by Onemli and Woodard and show explicitly that the resulting self-energies are also invariant. This implies the absence anomalous de Sitter breaking terms, which are reported in the literature. Furthermore, transplanckian effects do not necessarily leave an imprint on the spectrum of cosmic perturbations generated during inflation.

Perturbative and Nonperturbative Contributions to a Simple Model for Baryogenesis

Single field baryogenesis, a scenario for Dirac leptogenesis sourced by a time-dependent scalar condensate, is studied. We compare the creation of the charge asymmetry by the perturbative decay of the condensate with the nonperturbative decay, a process of particle production commonly known in the context of inflation as preheating. The nonperturbative channel dominates when the coupling of the scalar field to leptons is sufficiently large.

F_D-Term Hybrid Inflation with Electroweak-Scale Lepton Number Violation

We study F-term hybrid inflation in a novel supersymmetric extension of the SM with a subdominant Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term. We call this particular form of inflation, in short, F_D-term hybrid inflation. The proposed model ties the mu-parameter of the MSSM to an SO(3)-symmetric Majorana mass m_N, through the vacuum expectation value of the inflaton field. The late decays of the ultraheavy particles associated with the extra U(1) gauge group, which are abundantly produced during the preheating epoch, could lower the reheat temperature even up to 1 TeV, thereby avoiding the gravitino overproduction problem. The baryon asymmetry in the Universe can be explained by thermal electroweak-scale resonant leptogenesis, in a way independent of any pre-existing lepton- or baryon-number abundance. Further cosmological and particle-physics implications of the F_D-term hybrid model are briefly discussed.

Fermion Mass Generation in de Sitter Space

We study the one-loop radiative corrections for massless fermions in de Sitter space induced by a Yukawa coupling to a light, nearly minimally coupled scalar field. We show that the fermions acquire a mass. Next we construct the corresponding (nonlocal) effective fermionic action, which -- in contrast to the case of a massive Dirac fermion -- preserves chirality. Nevertheless, the resulting fermion dynamics is precisely that of a Dirac fermion with a mass proportional to the expansion rate. Our finding supports the view that an observer or a test particle responds to a scalar field in inflation by shifting its energy rather than seeing a thermal bath.

Lamb Shift of Unruh Detector Levels

We argue that the energy levels of an Unruh detector experience an effect similar to the Lamb shift in Quantum Electrodynamics. As a consequence, the spectrum of energy levels in a curved background is different from that in flat space. As examples, we consider a detector in an expanding Universe and in Rindler space, and for the latter case we suggest a new expression for the local virtual energy density seen by an accelerated observer. In the ultraviolet domain, that is when the space between the energy levels is larger than the Hubble rate or the acceleration of the detector, the Lamb shift quantitatively dominates over the thermal response rate.

SO(10)-GUT Coherent Baryogenesis

A model for GUT baryogenesis, coherent baryogenesis within the framework of supersymmetric SO(10), is considered. In particular, we discuss the Barr-Raby model, where at the end of hybrid infl ation charge asymmetries can be created through the time-dependent higgsino-gaugino mixing mass matrix. These asymmetries are processed to Standard Model matter through decays via nonrenormalizable (B-L)-violating operators. We find that a baryon asymmetry in accordance with observation can be generated. An appendix is devoted to provide useful formulas and concrete examples for calculations within SO(10).

Unruh response functions for scalar fields in de Sitter space

We calculate the response functions of a freely falling Unruh detector in de Sitter space coupled to scalar fields of different coupling to the curvature, including the minimally coupled massless case. Although the responses differ strongly in the infrared as a consequence of the amplification of superhorizon modes, the energy levels of the detector are thermally populated.

Coherent Baryogenesis and Nonthermal Leptogenesis: A comparison

We present a new mechanism for baryogenesis: at preheating after inflation fermions acquire a varying mass by their coupling to a time dependent field. Their CP-violating mass matrix can generate a charge asymmetry to be transformed into a lepton asymmetry through decay into standard model particles and heavy Majorana neutrinos. In a concrete model of hybrid inflation we compare ``coherent baryogenesis'' with nonthermal leptogenesis by perturbative decay of the inflation condensates.

Energy Density in Expanding Universes as Seen by Unruh's Detector

We consider the response of an Unruh detector to scalar fields in an expanding space-time. When combining transition elements of the scalar field Hamiltonian with the interaction operator of detector and field, one finds at second order in time-dependent perturbation theory a transition amplitude, which actually dominates in the ultraviolet over the first order contribution. In particular, the detector response faithfully reproduces the particle number implied by the stress-energy of a minimally coupled scalar field, which is inversely proportional to the energy of a scalar mode. This finding disagrees with the contention that in de Sitter space, the response of the detector drops exponentially with particle energy and therefore indicates a thermal spectrum.

Coherent Baryogenesis

We propose a new baryogenesis scenario based on coherent production and mixing of different fermionic species. The mechanism is operative during phase transitions, at which the fermions acquire masses via Yukawa couplings to scalar fields. Baryon production is efficient when the mass matrix is nonadiabatically varying, nonsymmetric and when it violates CP and B-L directly, or some other charges that are eventually converted to B-L. We first consider a toy model, which involves two mixing fermionic species, and then a hybrid inflationary scenario embedded in a supersymmetric Pati-Salam GUT. We show that, quite generically, a baryon excess in accordance with observation can result.
