CASE: Aligning Coarse-to-Fine Cognition and Affection for Empathetic Response Generation

Empathetic conversation is psychologically supposed to be the result of conscious alignment and interaction between the cognition and affection of empathy. However, existing empathetic dialogue models usually consider only the affective aspect or treat cognition and affection in isolation, which limits the capability of empathetic response generation. In this work, we propose the CASE model for empathetic dialogue generation. It first builds upon a commonsense cognition graph and an emotional concept graph and then aligns the user's cognition and affection at both the coarse-grained and fine-grained levels. Through automatic and manual evaluation, we demonstrate that CASE outperforms state-of-the-art baselines of empathetic dialogues and can generate more empathetic and informative responses.

Large Enhancements in Optical and Piezoelectric Properties in Ferroelectric Zn1-xMgxO Thin Films through Engineering Electronic and Ionic Anharmonicities

Multifunctionality as a paradigm requires materials exhibiting multiple superior properties. Integrating second-order optical nonlinearity and large bandgap with piezoelectricity could, for example, enable broadband, strain-tunable photonics. Though very different phenomena at distinct frequencies, both second-order optical nonlinearity and piezoelectricity are third-rank polar tensors present only in acentric crystal structures. However, simultaneously enhancing both phenomena is highly challenging since it involves competing effects with tradeoffs. Recently, a large switchable ferroelectric polarization of ~ 80 uC cm-2 was reported in Zn1-xMgxO films. Here, ferroelectric Zn1-xMgxO is demonstrated to be a platform that hosts simultaneously a 30% increase in the electronic bandgap, a 50% enhancement in the second harmonic generation coefficients, and a near 200% improvement in the piezoelectric coefficients over pure ZnO. These enhancements are shown to be due to a 400% increase in the electronic anharmonicity and a ~200% decrease in the ionic anharmonicity with Mg substitution. Precisely controllable periodic ferroelectric domain gratings are demonstrated down to 800 nm domain width, enabling ultraviolet quasi-phase-matched optical harmonic generation as well as domain-engineered piezoelectric devices.

MassFormer: Tandem Mass Spectrum Prediction for Small Molecules using Graph Transformers

Tandem mass spectra capture fragmentation patterns that provide key structural information about a molecule. Although mass spectrometry is applied in many areas, the vast majority of small molecules lack experimental reference spectra. For over seventy years, spectrum prediction has remained a key challenge in the field. Existing deep learning methods do not leverage global structure in the molecule, potentially resulting in difficulties when generalizing to new data. In this work we propose a new model, MassFormer, for accurately predicting tandem mass spectra. MassFormer uses a graph transformer architecture to model long-distance relationships between atoms in the molecule. The transformer module is initialized with parameters obtained through a chemical pre-training task, then fine-tuned on spectral data. MassFormer outperforms competing approaches for spectrum prediction on multiple datasets, and is able to recover prior knowledge about the effect of collision energy on the spectrum. By employing gradient-based attribution methods, we demonstrate that the model can identify relationships between fragment peaks. To further highlight MassFormer's utility, we show that it can match or exceed existing prediction-based methods on two spectrum identification tasks. We provide open-source implementations of our model and baseline approaches, with the goal of encouraging future research in this area.

Chiral perturbation theory for heavy hadrons and chiral effective field theory for heavy hadronic molecules

Chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking play an important role both in the light hadron and heavy hadron systems. The chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) is the low energy effective field theory of the QCD. In this work, we shall review the investigations on the chiral corrections to the properties of the heavy mesons and baryons within the framework of $χ$PT. We will also review the scatterings of the light pseudoscalar mesons and heavy hadrons, through which many new resonances such as the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ could be understood. Moreover, many new hadron states were observed experimentally in the past decades. A large group of these states is near-threshold resonances, such as the charged charmoniumlike $Z_c$ and $Z_{cs}$ states, bottomoniumlike $Z_b$ states, hidden-charm pentaquark $P_c$ and $P_{cs}$ states and the doubly charmed $T_{cc}$ state, etc. They are very good candidates of the loosely bound molecular states composed of a pair of charmed (bottom) hadrons, which are very similar to the loosely bound deuteron. The modern nuclear force was built upon the chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT), which is the extension of the $χ$PT to the systems with two matter fields. The long-range and medium-long-range interactions between two nucleons arise from the single- and double-pion exchange respectively, which are well constrained by the chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking. The short-distance interactions can be described by the low energy constants. Such a framework works very well for the nucleon-nucleon scattering and nuclei. In this work, we will perform an extensive review of the progress on the heavy hadronic molecular states within the framework of $χ$EFT. We shall emphasize that the same chiral dynamics not only govern the nuclei and forms the deuteron, but also dictates the shallow bound states or resonances composed of two heavy hadrons.

The progenitors of Type Ia supernovae with asymptotic giant branch donors

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are among the most energetic events in the Universe. They are excellent cosmological distance indicators due to the remarkable homogeneity of their light curves. However, the nature of the progenitors of SNe Ia is still not well understood. In the single-degenerate model, a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) could grow its mass by accreting material from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star, leading to the formation of SNe Ia when the mass of the WD approaches to the Chandrasekhar-mass limit, known as the AGB donor channel. In this channel, previous studies mainly concentrate on the wind-accretion pathway for the mass-increase of the WDs. In the present work, we employed an integrated mass-transfer prescription for the semidetached WD+AGB systems, and evolved a number of WD+AGB systems for the formation of SNe Ia through the Roche-lobe overflow process or the wind-accretion process. We provided the initial and final parameter spaces of WD+AGB systems for producing SNe Ia. We also obtained the density distribution of circumstellar matter at the moment when the WD mass reaches the Chandrasekhar-mass limit. Moreover, we found that the massive WD+AGB sample AT 2019qyl can be covered by the final parameter space for producing SNe Ia, indicating that AT 2019qyl is a strong progenitor candidate of SNe Ia with AGB donors.

Time Reversal Enabled Fiber-Optic Time Synchronization

Over the past few decades, fiber-optic time synchronization (FOTS) has provided fundamental support for the efficient operation of modern society. Looking toward the future beyond fifth-generation/sixth-generation (B5G/6G) scenarios and very large radio telescope arrays, developing high-precision, low-complexity and scalable FOTS technology is crucial for building a large-scale time synchronization network. However, the traditional two-way FOTS method needs a data layer to exchange time delay information. This increases the complexity of system and makes it impossible to realize multiple-access time synchronization. In this paper, a time reversal enabled FOTS method is proposed. It measures the clock difference between two locations without involving a data layer, which can reduce the complexity of the system. Moreover, it can also achieve multiple-access time synchronization along the fiber link. Tests over a 230 km fiber link have been carried out to demonstrate the high performance of the proposed method.

Revisiting the $DD^\ast$ chiral interactions with the local momentum-space regularization up to the third order and the nature of $T_{cc}^+$

We revisit the $DD^\ast$ interactions in chiral effective field theory up to the third order for the first time. We deal with the pion-exchanged interactions via local momentum-space regularization, in which we focus on their long-range behaviors through demanding their contributions vanish at the origin in the coordinate space. The short-range contact interactions and subleading pion-charmed meson couplings are estimated with the phenomenological resonance saturation model. The subleading pion-charmed meson couplings are much weaker than those in the pion-nucleon system, thus the $DD^\ast$ binding mechanism is very different with that of the $NN$ system. We also obtain the analytic structure of the two-pion exchange interactions in the coordinate space, and we find that its asymptotic behavior at long distance is similar to but slightly different with the $NN$ interactions. We get the same asymptotic behavior of the two-pion exchange interaction with that from HAL QCD method but appearing in the longer distance rather than $1 <r<2\text{ fm}$. The binding solution only exists in the isoscalar channel. Our calculation supports the molecular interpretation of $T_{cc}^+$.

Transferring Knowledge Distillation for Multilingual Social Event Detection

Recently published graph neural networks (GNNs) show promising performance at social event detection tasks. However, most studies are oriented toward monolingual data in languages with abundant training samples. This has left the more common multilingual settings and lesser-spoken languages relatively unexplored. Thus, we present a GNN that incorporates cross-lingual word embeddings for detecting events in multilingual data streams. The first exploit is to make the GNN work with multilingual data. For this, we outline a construction strategy that aligns messages in different languages at both the node and semantic levels. Relationships between messages are established by merging entities that are the same but are referred to in different languages. Non-English message representations are converted into English semantic space via the cross-lingual word embeddings. The resulting message graph is then uniformly encoded by a GNN model. In special cases where a lesser-spoken language needs to be detected, a novel cross-lingual knowledge distillation framework, called CLKD, exploits prior knowledge learned from similar threads in English to make up for the paucity of annotated data. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets show the framework to be highly effective at detection in both multilingual data and in languages where training samples are scarce.

Evolving ONe WD+He WD systems to ultra-compact X-ray binaries

It has been proposed that accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of massive white dwarfs (WDs) is an indispensable path for the formation of neutron star (NS) binaries. Although there are still no direct evidence for the existence of AIC events, several kinds of NS systems are suggested to originate from the AIC processes. One of the representative evidence is the detection of the strong magnetic field and slow spin NSs with ultra-light companions (<=0.1 Msun) in close orbits. However, previous studies cannot explain the formation of AIC events with such low-mass companions. In the present work, we evolve a series of ONe WD+He WD systems to the formation of AIC events (named as the He WD donor channel), and the NS binaries behave as ultra-compact X-ray binaries when the He WDs refill their Roche-lobes. We found that the ONe WD+He WD systems a possible channel for the formation of the newly formed NS+ultra-light companion systems just after the AIC event. Although there are some other inconsistent properties, the detected companion mass and orbital period of 4U 1626-67 (one of the newly formed NS binaries with ultra-light companions) can be reproduced by the He WD donor channel. In addition, combined with previous asteroseismology results, we speculate that an UCXB source (XTE J1751-305) may originate from the He WD donor channel.

Evolution of the post merger remnants from the coalescence of oxygen-neon and carbon-oxygen white dwarf pairs

Although multidimensional simulations have investigated the processes of double WD mergers, post-merger evolution only focused on the carbon-oxygen (CO) WD or helium (He) WD merger remnants. In this work, we investigate for the first time the evolution of the remnants stemmed from the merger of oxygen-neon (ONe) WDs with CO WDs. Our simulation results indicate that the merger remnants can evolve to hydrogen- and helium-deficient giants with maximum radius of about 300Rsun. Our models show evidence that merger remnants more massive than 1.95Msun can ignite Ne before significant mass-loss ensues, and they thus would become electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe). However, remnants with initial masses less than 1.90Msun will experience further core contraction and longer evolutionary time before reaching at the conditions for Ne-burning. Therefore their fates are more dependent on mass-loss rates due to stellar winds, and thus more uncertain. Relatively high mass-loss rates would cause such remnants to end their lives as ONe WDs. Our evolutionary models can naturally explain the observational properties of the double WD merger remnant IRAS 00500+6713 (J005311). As previously suggested in the literature, we propose and justify that J005311 may be the remnant from the coalescence of an ONe WD and an CO WD. We deduce that the final outcome of J005311 would be a massive ONe WD rather than a supernova explosion. Our investigations may be able to provide possible constraints on the wind mass-loss properties of the giants which have CO-dominant envelopes.

$Λ_c(2910)$ and $Λ_c(2940)$ as the conventional baryons dressed with the $D^*N$ channel

In this work, we treat $Λ_c(2910)^+$ and $Λ_c(2940)^+$ as the conventional $udc$ cores dressed with the $D^*N$ channel. We provide a possible interpretation to both $Λ_c(2910)^+$ and $Λ_c(2940)^+$ within the same framework. In the study, we consider not only the effects between the conventional triquark core and the $D^*N$ channel but also the $D^*N$-$D^*N$ interactions. The mass of $Λ_c$ state with $J^P=1/2^-$ is larger than that with $J^P=3/2^-$ in this unquenched picture, which is very different from the prediction of the conventional quenched quark model. Based on the mass spectrum, the spin-parity of $Λ_c(2940)^+$ is more likely to be $1/2^-$ while $Λ_c(2910)^+$ prefers $3/2^-$. We look forward to the future experiments can test our results with more precise experimental data.

User-Customizable Transpilation of Scripting Languages

A transpiler converts code from one programming language to another. Many practical uses of transpilers require the user to be able to guide or customize the program produced from a given input program. This customizability is important for satisfying many application-specific goals for the produced code such as ensuring performance, readability, maintainability, compatibility, and so on. Conventional transpilers are deterministic rule-driven systems often written without offering customizability per user and per program. Recent advances in transpilers based on neural networks offer some customizability to users, e.g. through interactive prompts, but they are still difficult to precisely control the production of a desired output. Both conventional and neural transpilation also suffer from the "last mile" problem: they produce correct code on average, i.e., on most parts of a given program, but not necessarily for all parts of it. We propose a new transpilation approach that offers fine-grained customizability and reusability of transpilation rules created by others, without burdening the user to understand the global semantics of the given source program. Our approach is mostly automatic and incremental, i.e., constructs translation rules needed to transpile the given program as per the user's guidance piece-by-piece. We implement the transpiler as a tool called DuoGlot, which translates Python to Javascript programs, and evaluate it on the popular GeeksForGeeks benchmarks. DuoGlot achieves 90% translation accuracy and so it outperforms all existing translators, while it produces readable code. We evaluate DuoGlot on two additional benchmarks, containing more challenging and longer programs, and similarly observe improved accuracy.

AdS super gluon scattering up to two loops: A position space approach

We carry out a bootstrap study of four-point correlators in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs which are dual to super Yang-Mills on $AdS_5\times S^3$. We focus on the simplest $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS operators which correspond to the super gluons in the massless current multiplet. Our computation is based on an ansatz in position space which is inspired by a hidden symmetry structure manifest in the leading terms of the Lorentzian singularities of the correlators. By using other consistency conditions, we completely fix the super gluon correlators at one and two loops in the bulk genus expansion, up to possible counterterms. Our results reveal a number of interesting properties enriched by the color structures. In particular, the implication of hidden conformal symmetry on the full super gluon reduced correlator exhibits an analogous pattern as in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ supergravity correlators recently computed up to two loops.

Empathetic Response Generation via Emotion Cause Transition Graph

Empathetic dialogue is a human-like behavior that requires the perception of both affective factors (e.g., emotion status) and cognitive factors (e.g., cause of the emotion). Besides concerning emotion status in early work, the latest approaches study emotion causes in empathetic dialogue. These approaches focus on understanding and duplicating emotion causes in the context to show empathy for the speaker. However, instead of only repeating the contextual causes, the real empathic response often demonstrate a logical and emotion-centered transition from the causes in the context to those in the responses. In this work, we propose an emotion cause transition graph to explicitly model the natural transition of emotion causes between two adjacent turns in empathetic dialogue. With this graph, the concept words of the emotion causes in the next turn can be predicted and used by a specifically designed concept-aware decoder to generate the empathic response. Automatic and human experimental results on the benchmark dataset demonstrate that our method produces more empathetic, coherent, informative, and specific responses than existing models.

Prescribed Time Time-varying Output Formation Tracking for Uncertain Heterogeneous Multi-agent Systems

The time-varying output formation tracking for the heterogeneous multi-agent systems (MAS) is investigated in this paper. First, a distributed observer is constructed for followers to estimate the states of the leader, which can ensure that the estimation error converges to the origin in the prescribed time. Then, the local formation controller is designed for each follower based on the estimation of the observer, under which, the formation errors converge to the origin in the prescribed time as well. That is, the settling time of the whole system can be predefined in advance. It's noted that not only the uncertainties in the state matrix but also the uncertainties in the input matrix are considered, which makes the problem more practical. Last, a simulation is performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

NodeCoder: a graph-based machine learning platform to predict active sites of modeled protein structures

While accurate protein structure predictions are now available for nearly every observed protein sequence, predicted structures lack much of the functional context offered by experimental structure determination. We address this gap with NodeCoder, a task-independent platform that maps residue-based datasets onto 3D protein structures, embeds the resulting structural feature into a contact network, and models residue classification tasks with a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN). We demonstrate the versatility of this strategy by modeling six separate tasks, with some labels derived from other experimental structure studies (ligand, peptide, ion, and nucleic acid binding sites) and other labels derived from annotation databases (post-translational modification and transmembrane regions). Moreover, A NodeCoder model trained to identify ligand binding site residues was able to outperform P2Rank, a widely-used software developed specifically for ligand binding site detection. NodeCoder is available as an open-source python package at https://pypi.org/project/NodeCoder/.

Coherent Resonant Coupling between Atoms and a Mechanical Oscillator Mediated by Cavity-Vacuum Fluctuations

We show that an atom can be coupled to a mechanical oscillator via quantum vacuum fluctuations of a cavity field enabling energy transfer processes between them. In a hybrid quantum system consisting of a cavity resonator with a movable mirror and an atom, these processes are dominated by two pair-creation mechanisms: the counterrotating (atom-cavity system) and dynamical Casimir interaction terms (optomechanical system). Because of these two pair-creation mechanisms, the resonant atom-mirror coupling is the result of high-order virtual processes with different transition paths well described in our theoretical framework. We perform a unitary transformation to the atom-mirror system Hamiltonian, exhibiting two kinds of multiple-order transitions of the pair creation. By tuning the frequency of the atom, we show that photon frequency conversion can be realized within a cavity of multiple modes. Furthermore, when involving two atoms coupled to the same mechanical mode, a single vibrating excitation of the mechanical oscillator can be simultaneously absorbed by the two atoms. Considering recent advances in strong and ultrastrong coupling for cavity optomechanics and other systems, we believe our proposals can be implemented using available technology.
