Cycle Self-Training for Semi-Supervised Object Detection with Distribution Consistency Reweighting

Recently, many semi-supervised object detection (SSOD) methods adopt teacher-student framework and have achieved state-of-the-art results. However, the teacher network is tightly coupled with the student network since the teacher is an exponential moving average (EMA) of the student, which causes a performance bottleneck. To address the coupling problem, we propose a Cycle Self-Training (CST) framework for SSOD, which consists of two teachers T1 and T2, two students S1 and S2. Based on these networks, a cycle self-training mechanism is built, i.e., S1${\rightarrow}$T1${\rightarrow}$S2${\rightarrow}$T2${\rightarrow}$S1. For S${\rightarrow}$T, we also utilize the EMA weights of the students to update the teachers. For T${\rightarrow}$S, instead of providing supervision for its own student S1(S2) directly, the teacher T1(T2) generates pseudo-labels for the student S2(S1), which looses the coupling effect. Moreover, owing to the property of EMA, the teacher is most likely to accumulate the biases from the student and make the mistakes irreversible. To mitigate the problem, we also propose a distribution consistency reweighting strategy, where pseudo-labels are reweighted based on distribution consistency across the teachers T1 and T2. With the strategy, the two students S2 and S1 can be trained robustly with noisy pseudo labels to avoid confirmation biases. Extensive experiments prove the superiority of CST by consistently improving the AP over the baseline and outperforming state-of-the-art methods by 2.1% absolute AP improvements with scarce labeled data.

Formation of black widows through ultra-compact X-ray binaries with He star companions

Black widows (BWs) are a type of eclipsing millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with companion masses $M_2$ $\lesssim 0.05\,\rm M_\odot$, which can be used to study the accretion history and the radiation of pulsars, as well as the origin of isolated MSPs. Recent observations indicate that there are two sub-types of BWs. One is the BWs with $M_2$ $\sim$ $0.01-0.05\,\rm M_\odot$, whereas another with $M_2$ $\lesssim 0.01\,\rm M_\odot$. However, the origin of the latter is still highly uncertain. In this paper, we investigated the formation of BWs with $M_2$ $\lesssim 0.01\,\rm M_\odot$ through ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) with He star companions, in which a neutron star (NS) accretes material from a He star through Roche-lobe overflow. By considering different He star masses and evaporation efficiencies with the stellar evolution code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), we evolved a series of NS+He star systems that can undergo UCXB stage. We found that this channel can explain the formation of BWs with $M_2$ $\lesssim 0.01\,\rm M_\odot$ within the Hubble time, especially three widely studied BWs, i.e. PSRs J1719-1438, J2322-2650 and J1311-3430. We also found that X-ray irradiation feedback does not affect the evolutionary tracks of evaporation process. Our simulations indicate that the UCXB channel with He star companions are the potential progenitors of isolated MSPs, and that the origin of BWs with $M_2$ $\lesssim 0.01\,\rm M_\odot$ is different with another sub-type of BWs. In addition, the present work suggests that the BWs with $M_2$ $\lesssim 0.01\,\rm M_\odot$ may not be produced by redback systems.

BigBIO: A Framework for Data-Centric Biomedical Natural Language Processing

Training and evaluating language models increasingly requires the construction of meta-datasets --diverse collections of curated data with clear provenance. Natural language prompting has recently lead to improved zero-shot generalization by transforming existing, supervised datasets into a diversity of novel pretraining tasks, highlighting the benefits of meta-dataset curation. While successful in general-domain text, translating these data-centric approaches to biomedical language modeling remains challenging, as labeled biomedical datasets are significantly underrepresented in popular data hubs. To address this challenge, we introduce BigBIO a community library of 126+ biomedical NLP datasets, currently covering 12 task categories and 10+ languages. BigBIO facilitates reproducible meta-dataset curation via programmatic access to datasets and their metadata, and is compatible with current platforms for prompt engineering and end-to-end few/zero shot language model evaluation. We discuss our process for task schema harmonization, data auditing, contribution guidelines, and outline two illustrative use cases: zero-shot evaluation of biomedical prompts and large-scale, multi-task learning. BigBIO is an ongoing community effort and is available at https://github.com/bigscience-workshop/biomedical

Epicenter localization using forward-transmission laser interferometry

Widely distributed optical fibers, together with phase-sensitive laser interferometry, can expand seismic detection methods and have great potential for epicenter localization. In this paper, we propose an integral response method based on a forward transmission scheme. It uses spectrum analysis and parameter fitting to localize the epicenter. With the given shape of the fiber ring, the integral phase changes of light propagating in the forward and reverse directions can be used to determine the direction, depth, distance of the epicenter, and seismic wave speed. For the noisy case with SNR=20 dB, the simulation results show ultrahigh precision when epicenter distance is 200 km: the error of the orientation angle is ~0.003°, the error of the P-wave speed is ~0.9 m/s, the error of the epicenter depth is ~9.5 m, and the error of the epicenter distance is ~200 m.

The exterior Dirichlet problems of Hessian quotient equations

In this paper, we study the Dirichlet problem of Hessian quotient equations in exterior domains. By estimating the eigenvalues of the solution, the necessary and sufficient conditions on existence of radial solutions are obtained. Applying the solutions of ODE, the viscosity subsolutions and supersolutions are constructed and then the existence of viscosity solutions for exterior problems is established by the Perron's method.

Observations of the Very Young Type Ia Supernova 2019np with Early-excess Emission

Early-time radiative signals from type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can provide important constraints on the explosion mechanism and the progenitor system. We present observations and analysis of SN 2019np, a nearby SN Ia discovered within 1-2 days after the explosion. Follow-up observations were conducted in optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared bands, covering the phases from $\sim-$16.7 days to $\sim$+367.8 days relative to its $B-$band peak luminosity. The photometric and spectral evolutions of SN 2019np resembles the average behavior of normal SNe Ia. The absolute B-band peak magnitude and the post-peak decline rate are $M_{\rm max}(B)=-19.52 \pm 0.47$mag and $Δm_{\rm15}(B) =1.04 \pm 0.04$mag, respectively. No Hydrogen line has been detected in the near-infrared and nebular-phase spectra of SN 2019np. Assuming that the $^{56}$Ni powering the light curve is centrally located, we find that the bolometric light curve of SN 2019np shows a flux excess up to 5.0% in the early phase compared to the radiative diffusion model. Such an extra radiation perhaps suggests the presence of an additional energy source beyond the radioactive decay of central nickel. Comparing the observed color evolution with that predicted by different models such as interactions of SN ejecta with circumstellar matter (CSM)/companion star, a double-detonation explosion from a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD), and surface $^{56}$Ni mixing, the latter one is favored.

Searching for cosmic string induced stochastic gravitational wave background with the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array

We search for stochastic gravitational wave background emitted from cosmic strings using the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array data over 15 years. While we find that the common power-law excess revealed by several pulsar timing array experiments might be accounted for by the gravitational wave background from cosmic strings, the lack of the characteristic Hellings-Downs correlation cannot establish its physical origin yet. The constraints on the cosmic string model parameters are thus derived with conservative assumption that the common power-law excess is due to unknown background. Two representative cosmic string models with different loop distribution functions are considered. We obtain constraints on the dimensionless string tension parameter $Gμ<10^{-11}\sim10^{-10}$, which is more stringent by two orders of magnitude than that obtained by the high-frequency LIGO-Virgo experiment for one model, and less stringent for the other. The results provide the chance to test the Grand unified theories, with the spontaneous symmetry breaking scale of $U(1)$ being two-to-three orders of magnitude below $10^{16}$ GeV. The pulsar timing array experiments are thus quite complementary to the LIGO-Virgo experiment in probing the cosmic strings and the underlying beyond standard model physics in the early Universe.

MHSnet: Multi-head and Spatial Attention Network with False-Positive Reduction for Pulmonary Nodules Detection

The mortality of lung cancer has ranked high among cancers for many years. Early detection of lung cancer is critical for disease prevention, cure, and mortality rate reduction. However, existing detection methods on pulmonary nodules introduce an excessive number of false positive proposals in order to achieve high sensitivity, which is not practical in clinical situations. In this paper, we propose the multi-head detection and spatial squeeze-and-attention network, MHSnet, to detect pulmonary nodules, in order to aid doctors in the early diagnosis of lung cancers. Specifically, we first introduce multi-head detectors and skip connections to customize for the variety of nodules in sizes, shapes and types and capture multi-scale features. Then, we implement a spatial attention module to enable the network to focus on different regions differently inspired by how experienced clinicians screen CT images, which results in fewer false positive proposals. Lastly, we present a lightweight but effective false positive reduction module with the Linear Regression model to cut down the number of false positive proposals, without any constraints on the front network. Extensive experimental results compared with the state-of-the-art models have shown the superiority of the MHSnet in terms of the average FROC, sensitivity and especially false discovery rate (2.98% and 2.18% improvement in terms of average FROC and sensitivity, 5.62% and 28.33% decrease in terms of false discovery rate and average candidates per scan). The false positive reduction module significantly decreases the average number of candidates generated per scan by 68.11% and the false discovery rate by 13.48%, which is promising to reduce distracted proposals for the downstream tasks based on the detection results.

Dynamic Prefix-Tuning for Generative Template-based Event Extraction

We consider event extraction in a generative manner with template-based conditional generation. Although there is a rising trend of casting the task of event extraction as a sequence generation problem with prompts, these generation-based methods have two significant challenges, including using suboptimal prompts and static event type information. In this paper, we propose a generative template-based event extraction method with dynamic prefix (GTEE-DynPref) by integrating context information with type-specific prefixes to learn a context-specific prefix for each context. Experimental results show that our model achieves competitive results with the state-of-the-art classification-based model OneIE on ACE 2005 and achieves the best performances on ERE. Additionally, our model is proven to be portable to new types of events effectively.

How to understand the $X(2900)$?

In this work, the $S$- and $P$-wave $\bar{D}^\ast K^\ast$ interactions are studied in a coupled-channel formalism to understand the recently observed $X_0(2900)$ and $X_1(2900)$ at LHCb. The experimental event distributions can be well described, and two states with $I(J^P)=0(0^+)$ and $0(1^-)$ are yielded in an unified framework. The masses of the $0^+$ and $1^-$ states are consistent with the experimental data, but the width of the $0^+$ state is larger than that of the $1^-$ one. The $X_1(2900)$ can be interpreted as the $P$-wave excitation of the ground-state $X_0(2900)$ in the hadronic molecular picture. The $S$- and $P$-wave multiplets in the $\bar{D}^\ast K^\ast$ system have many members, so the present peak in the $D^-K^+$ invariant mass distributions might contain multi subpeaks. In order to probe the fine structures behind the single whole peak now, more refined measurements in the $B^+\to D^+D^-K^+$ decay channel are necessary.

Dual networks based 3D Multi-Person Pose Estimation from Monocular Video

Monocular 3D human pose estimation has made progress in recent years. Most of the methods focus on single persons, which estimate the poses in the person-centric coordinates, i.e., the coordinates based on the center of the target person. Hence, these methods are inapplicable for multi-person 3D pose estimation, where the absolute coordinates (e.g., the camera coordinates) are required. Moreover, multi-person pose estimation is more challenging than single pose estimation, due to inter-person occlusion and close human interactions. Existing top-down multi-person methods rely on human detection (i.e., top-down approach), and thus suffer from the detection errors and cannot produce reliable pose estimation in multi-person scenes. Meanwhile, existing bottom-up methods that do not use human detection are not affected by detection errors, but since they process all persons in a scene at once, they are prone to errors, particularly for persons in small scales. To address all these challenges, we propose the integration of top-down and bottom-up approaches to exploit their strengths. Our top-down network estimates human joints from all persons instead of one in an image patch, making it robust to possible erroneous bounding boxes. Our bottom-up network incorporates human-detection based normalized heatmaps, allowing the network to be more robust in handling scale variations. Finally, the estimated 3D poses from the top-down and bottom-up networks are fed into our integration network for final 3D poses. To address the common gaps between training and testing data, we do optimization during the test time, by refining the estimated 3D human poses using high-order temporal constraint, re-projection loss, and bone length regularizations. Our evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Code and models are available: https://github.com/3dpose/3D-Multi-Person-Pose.

$Σ_cΣ_c$ interactions in chiral effective field theory

We study the interactions of the $Σ_cΣ_c$ system in the framework of chiral effective theory. We consider the contact, one-pion and two-pion exchange interactions and bridge the low energy constants of the $Σ_cΣ_c$ system to those of the $Σ_c^{(*)}\bar{D}^{(*)}$ systems through the quark-level ansatz for the contact interaction. We explore the influence of intermediate channels in the two-pion exchange diagrams of the $Σ_cΣ_c$ system. We obtain a deep bound state $[Σ_cΣ_c]_{J=0}^{I=0}$ and a shallow bound state $[Σ_cΣ_c]_{J=1}^{I=1}$. As a byproduct, we further investigate the interactions of the $Λ_cΛ_c$ and $Λ_cΣ_c$ systems.

A sequence-to-sequence approach for document-level relation extraction

Motivated by the fact that many relations cross the sentence boundary, there has been increasing interest in document-level relation extraction (DocRE). DocRE requires integrating information within and across sentences, capturing complex interactions between mentions of entities. Most existing methods are pipeline-based, requiring entities as input. However, jointly learning to extract entities and relations can improve performance and be more efficient due to shared parameters and training steps. In this paper, we develop a sequence-to-sequence approach, seq2rel, that can learn the subtasks of DocRE (entity extraction, coreference resolution and relation extraction) end-to-end, replacing a pipeline of task-specific components. Using a simple strategy we call entity hinting, we compare our approach to existing pipeline-based methods on several popular biomedical datasets, in some cases exceeding their performance. We also report the first end-to-end results on these datasets for future comparison. Finally, we demonstrate that, under our model, an end-to-end approach outperforms a pipeline-based approach. Our code, data and trained models are available at {\url{https://github.com/johngiorgi/seq2rel}}. An online demo is available at {\url{https://share.streamlit.io/johngiorgi/seq2rel/main/demo.py}}.

Traffic4cast at NeurIPS 2021 -- Temporal and Spatial Few-Shot Transfer Learning in Gridded Geo-Spatial Processes

The IARAI Traffic4cast competitions at NeurIPS 2019 and 2020 showed that neural networks can successfully predict future traffic conditions 1 hour into the future on simply aggregated GPS probe data in time and space bins. We thus reinterpreted the challenge of forecasting traffic conditions as a movie completion task. U-Nets proved to be the winning architecture, demonstrating an ability to extract relevant features in this complex real-world geo-spatial process. Building on the previous competitions, Traffic4cast 2021 now focuses on the question of model robustness and generalizability across time and space. Moving from one city to an entirely different city, or moving from pre-COVID times to times after COVID hit the world thus introduces a clear domain shift. We thus, for the first time, release data featuring such domain shifts. The competition now covers ten cities over 2 years, providing data compiled from over 10^12 GPS probe data. Winning solutions captured traffic dynamics sufficiently well to even cope with these complex domain shifts. Surprisingly, this seemed to require only the previous 1h traffic dynamic history and static road graph as input.

Hybrid Routing Transformer for Zero-Shot Learning

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to learn models that can recognize unseen image semantics based on the training of data with seen semantics. Recent studies either leverage the global image features or mine discriminative local patch features to associate the extracted visual features to the semantic attributes. However, due to the lack of the necessary top-down guidance and semantic alignment for ensuring the model attending to the real attribute-correlation regions, these methods still encounter a significant semantic gap between the visual modality and the attribute modality, which makes their prediction on unseen semantics unreliable. To solve this problem, this paper establishes a novel transformer encoder-decoder model, called hybrid routing transformer (HRT). In HRT encoder, we embed an active attention, which is constructed by both the bottom-up and the top-down dynamic routing pathways to generate the attribute-aligned visual feature. While in HRT decoder, we use static routing to calculate the correlation among the attribute-aligned visual features, the corresponding attribute semantics, and the class attribute vectors to generate the final class label predictions. This design makes the presented transformer model a hybrid of 1) top-down and bottom-up attention pathways and 2) dynamic and static routing pathways. Comprehensive experiments on three widely-used benchmark datasets, namely CUB, SUN, and AWA2, are conducted. The obtained experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Interactive Image Synthesis with Panoptic Layout Generation

Interactive image synthesis from user-guided input is a challenging task when users wish to control the scene structure of a generated image with ease.Although remarkable progress has been made on layout-based image synthesis approaches, in order to get realistic fake image in interactive scene, existing methods require high-precision inputs, which probably need adjustment several times and are unfriendly to novice users. When placement of bounding boxes is subject to perturbation, layout-based models suffer from "missing regions" in the constructed semantic layouts and hence undesirable artifacts in the generated images. In this work, we propose Panoptic Layout Generative Adversarial Networks (PLGAN) to address this challenge. The PLGAN employs panoptic theory which distinguishes object categories between "stuff" with amorphous boundaries and "things" with well-defined shapes, such that stuff and instance layouts are constructed through separate branches and later fused into panoptic layouts. In particular, the stuff layouts can take amorphous shapes and fill up the missing regions left out by the instance layouts. We experimentally compare our PLGAN with state-of-the-art layout-based models on the COCO-Stuff, Visual Genome, and Landscape datasets. The advantages of PLGAN are not only visually demonstrated but quantitatively verified in terms of inception score, Fréchet inception distance, classification accuracy score, and coverage.
