Mixing fraction in classical novae

Context. Classical novae are powered by thermonuclear runaways occurring on the surface of accreting white dwarfs (WDs). In the observations, the enrichments of heavy elements in nova ejecta have been detected, indicating a mixing process between the accreted matter and the matter from the outer layers of the underlying WDs prior to nova outbursts. However, the mixing fraction in classical novae is still uncertain. Aims. The purpose of this article is to investigate some elemental abundance ratios during nova outbursts that can be used to estimate the WD mixing fraction in classical novae. Methods. By considering different WD mixing fractions with the stellar evolution code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), we carried out a series of simulations of nova outbursts, in which the initial CO WD masses range from $0.7-1.0\,M_\odot$. Results. We identified four elemental abundance ratios (i.e. $\rm (H+He)/\sum CNO$, $\rm (H+He)/Ne$, $\rm \sum CNO/Mg,$ and $\rm \sum CNO/Si$) that satisfy the conditions for determining the WD mixing fraction, in which $\rm (H+He)/\sum CNO$ is the most suitable mixing meter. We also estimated the WD mixing fraction in some representative classical novae. Additionally, we found that a higher metallicity (i.e. higher WD mixing fraction) is preferentially accompanied by a longer $t_{\rm 2}$ (the time of decline by two magnitudes from peak luminosity) during nova outbursts. Our results can be used to constrain the mixing process in classical novae.

A Coarse-to-fine Morphological Approach With Knowledge-based Rules and Self-adapting Correction for Lung Nodules Segmentation

The segmentation module which precisely outlines the nodules is a crucial step in a computer-aided diagnosis(CAD) system. The most challenging part of such a module is how to achieve high accuracy of the segmentation, especially for the juxtapleural, non-solid and small nodules. In this research, we present a coarse-to-fine methodology that greatly improves the thresholding method performance with a novel self-adapting correction algorithm and effectively removes noisy pixels with well-defined knowledge-based principles. Compared with recent strong morphological baselines, our algorithm, by combining dataset features, achieves state-of-the-art performance on both the public LIDC-IDRI dataset (DSC 0.699) and our private LC015 dataset (DSC 0.760) which closely approaches the SOTA deep learning-based models' performances. Furthermore, unlike most available morphological methods that can only segment the isolated and well-circumscribed nodules accurately, the precision of our method is totally independent of the nodule type or diameter, proving its applicability and generality.

Neural-FST Class Language Model for End-to-End Speech Recognition

We propose Neural-FST Class Language Model (NFCLM) for end-to-end speech recognition, a novel method that combines neural network language models (NNLMs) and finite state transducers (FSTs) in a mathematically consistent framework. Our method utilizes a background NNLM which models generic background text together with a collection of domain-specific entities modeled as individual FSTs. Each output token is generated by a mixture of these components; the mixture weights are estimated with a separately trained neural decider. We show that NFCLM significantly outperforms NNLM by 15.8% relative in terms of Word Error Rate. NFCLM achieves similar performance as traditional NNLM and FST shallow fusion while being less prone to overbiasing and 12 times more compact, making it more suitable for on-device usage.

Stability and low-energy orientations of interphase boundaries in multiaxial ferroelectrics: Phase-field simulations

The coexistence of different ferroelectric phases enables the tunability of the macroscopic properties and extensive applications from piezoelectric transducers to nonvolatile memories. Here we develop a thermodynamic model to predict the stability and low-energy orientations of boundaries between different phases in ferroelectrics. Taking lead zirconate titanate and bismuth ferrite as two examples, we demonstrate that the low-energy orientations of interphase boundaries are largely determined by minimizing the electrostatic and elastic energies. Phase-field simulations are employed to analyze the competition between the interfacial energy and the electrostatic and elastic energies. Our simulation results demonstrate that the lowering of crystal symmetry could occur due to the electrical and mechanical incompatibilities between the two phases, which can be used to explain the experimentally observed low-symmetry phases near morphotropic phase boundaries. Our work provides theoretical foundations for understanding and controlling the interphase boundaries in ferroelectric materials for multifunctional applications.

Time shifting deviation method enhanced laser interferometry: ultrahigh precision localizing of traffic vibration using urban fiber link

Using fiber network as a huge sensing system will enrich monitoring methods of public infrastructures and geological disasters. With traditional cross-correlation method, laser interferometer has been used to detect and localize the vibration event. However, the random error induced by cross-correlation method limits the localization accuracy, and makes it not suitable for ultrahigh precision localizing applications. We propose a novel time shifting deviation (TSDEV) method, which has advantages over cross-correlation method in practicability and localization accuracy. Three experiments are carried out to demonstrate the novelty of the TSDEV method. In lab test, vibration localization accuracy of ~2.5 m is realized. In field tests, TSDEV method enhanced interferometry is applied to monitor the urban fiber link. Traffic vibration events on the campus road and Beijing ring road have been precisely localized and analyzed, respectively. The proposed technique will extend the function of existing urban fiber network, and better serve the future smart city.

SN 2012ij: A low-luminosity type Ia supernova and evidence for continuous distribution from 91bg-like explosion to normal ones

In this paper, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of a subluminous type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2012ij, which has an absolute $B$-band peak magnitude $M_{B,\rm{max}}$ = $-$17.95 $\pm$ 0.15 mag. The $B$-band light curve exhibits a fast post-peak decline with $Δm_{15}(B)$ = 1.86 $\pm$ 0.05 mag. All the $R$ and $I$/$i$-band light curves show a weak secondary peak/shoulder feature at about 3 weeks after the peak, like some transitional subclass of SNe Ia, which could result from an incomplete merger of near-infrared (NIR) double peaks. The spectra are characterized by Ti~{\sc ii} and strong Si~{\sc ii} $λ$5972 absorption features that are usually seen in low-luminosity objects like SN 1999by. The NIR spectrum before maximum light reveals weak carbon absorption features, implying the existence of unburned materials. We compare the observed properties of SN 2012ij with those predicted by the sub-Chandrasekhar-mass and the Chandrasekhar-mass delayed-detonation models, and find that both optical and NIR spectral properties can be explained to some extent by these two models. By comparing the secondary maximum features in $I$ and $i$ bands, we suggest that SN 2012ij is a transitional object linking normal SNe Ia to typical 91bg-like ones. From the published sample of SNe Ia from the $Carnegie~Supernova~Project~II$ (CSP-II), we estimate that the fraction of SN 2012ij-like SNe Ia is not lower than $\sim$ 2%.

Formation of millisecond pulsars with long orbital periods by accretion-induced collapse of white-dwarfs

Accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of massive white-dwarfs (WDs) has been proposed as an important way for the formation of neutron star (NS) systems. An oxygen-neon (ONe) WD that accretes H-rich material from a red-giant (RG) star may experience the AIC process, eventually producing millisecond pulsars (MSPs), known as the RG donor channel. Previous studies indicate that this channel can only account for MSPs with orbital periods $>500\,\rm d$. It is worth noting that some more MSPs with wide orbits ($60-500\,\rm d$) have been detected by recent observations, but their origin is still highly uncertain. In the present work, by employing an adiabatic power-law assumptions for the mass-transfer process, we performed a large number of complete binary evolution calculations for the formation of MSPs through the RG donor channel in a systematic way. We found that this channel can contribute to the observed MSPs with orbital periods in the range of $50-1200\,{\rm d}$, and almost all the observed MSPs with wide orbits can be covered by this channel in the WD companion mass versus orbital period diagram. The present work indicates that the AIC process provides a viable way to form MSPs with wide orbits.

Random cohort effects and age groups dependency structure for mortality modelling and forecasting: Mixed-effects time-series model approach

There have been significant efforts devoted to solving the longevity risk given that a continuous growth in population ageing has become a severe issue for many developed countries over the past few decades. The Cairns-Blake-Dowd (CBD) model, which incorporates cohort effects parameters in its parsimonious design, is one of the most well-known approaches for mortality modelling at higher ages and longevity risk. This article proposes a novel mixed-effects time-series approach for mortality modelling and forecasting with considerations of age groups dependence and random cohort effects parameters. The proposed model can disclose more mortality data information and provide a natural quantification of the model parameters uncertainties with no pre-specified constraint required for estimating the cohort effects parameters. The abilities of the proposed approach are demonstrated through two applications with empirical male and female mortality data. The proposed approach shows remarkable improvements in terms of forecast accuracy compared to the CBD model in the short-, mid-and long-term forecasting using mortality data of several developed countries in the numerical examples.

Heavy flavor molecular states with strangeness

We proposed a unified framework to describe the interactions of the observed $T_{cc}$, $P_c$, and $P_{cs}$ within a quark level interaction in our previous work. In this work, we generalize our framework to the loosely bound hadronic molecules composed of heavy flavor di-hadrons with strangeness. We predict the possible $D^{(*)}D^{(*)}_s$ molecular states in the SU(3) limit with the masses of the $P_c$ states as the inputs. We also investigate the baryon-meson and baryon-baryon systems and consider the SU(3) breaking effect in their flavor wave functions. We generalize our isospin criterion of the formation of heavy flavor di-hadron molecules to the $U/V$ spin case. For a specific heavy flavor meson-meson, baryon-meson, or baryon-baryon system, the interactions for the states with the same flavor and spin matrix elements can be related by a generalized flavor-spin symmetry.

High-Fidelity Point Cloud Completion with Low-Resolution Recovery and Noise-Aware Upsampling

Completing an unordered partial point cloud is a challenging task. Existing approaches that rely on decoding a latent feature to recover the complete shape, often lead to the completed point cloud being over-smoothing, losing details, and noisy. Instead of decoding a whole shape, we propose to decode and refine a low-resolution (low-res) point cloud first, and then performs a patch-wise noise-aware upsampling rather than interpolating the whole sparse point cloud at once, which tends to lose details. Regarding the possibility of lacking details of the initially decoded low-res point cloud, we propose an iterative refinement to recover the geometric details and a symmetrization process to preserve the trustworthy information from the input partial point cloud. After obtaining a sparse and complete point cloud, we propose a patch-wise upsampling strategy. Patch-based upsampling allows to better recover fine details unlike decoding a whole shape, however, the existing upsampling methods are not applicable to completion task due to the data discrepancy (i.e., input sparse data here is not from ground-truth). Therefore, we propose a patch extraction approach to generate training patch pairs between the sparse and ground-truth point clouds, and an outlier removal step to suppress the noisy points from the sparse point cloud. Together with the low-res recovery, our whole method is able to achieve high-fidelity point cloud completion. Comprehensive evaluations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its individual components.

$D D^{*}$ potentials in chiral perturbation theory and possible molecular states

The $DD^{*}$ potentials are studied within the framework of heavy meson chiral effective field theory. We obtain the effective potentials of the $DD^{*}$ system up to $O(ε^2)$ at the one-loop level. In addition to the one-pion exchange contribution, the contact and two-pion exchange interactions are also investigated in detail. Furthermore, we search for the possible molecular states by solving the Schrödinger equation with the potentials. We notice that the contact and two-pion exchange potentials are numerically non-negligible and important for the existence of a bound state. In our results, no bound state is found in the $I=1$ channel within a wide range of cutoff parameter, while there exists a bound state in the $I=0$ channel as the cutoff is near $m_ρ$ in our approach.

Comparison between Time Shifting Deviation and Cross-correlation Methods

Time delay estimation (TDE) is an important step to identify and locate vibration source. The TDE result can be obtained by cross-correlation method through seeking the maximum correlation peak of two signals. However, the cross-correlation method will induce random error when dealing with the nonstationary signal. We propose a novel time shifting deviation (TSDEV) method to solve this problem, which has been proved to achieve ultrahigh precision localization result in the fiber vibration monitoring system. This paper compares TSDEV method with cross-correlation in detail by simulating TDE process in different conditions, such as signals with arbitrary intercepted length, nonstationary drift and correlated noise. Besides, experimental demonstration has been carried out on 60 km fiber to localize a wide band vibration signal. The typical localization error is 2 m with standard deviation of 21.4 m using TSDEV method. It stands in clear contrast to the result of cross-correlation method, whose localization error is 70 m and the standard deviation is 208.4 m. Compared with cross-correlation method, TSDEV has the same resistance to white noise, but has fewer boundary conditions and better suppression on linear drift or common noise, which leads to more precise TDE results.

Traffic4cast -- Large-scale Traffic Prediction using 3DResNet and Sparse-UNet

The IARAI competition Traffic4cast 2021 aims to predict short-term city-wide high-resolution traffic states given the static and dynamic traffic information obtained previously. The aim is to build a machine learning model for predicting the normalized average traffic speed and flow of the subregions of multiple large-scale cities using historical data points. The model is supposed to be generic, in a way that it can be applied to new cities. By considering spatiotemporal feature learning and modeling efficiency, we explore 3DResNet and Sparse-UNet approaches for the tasks in this competition. The 3DResNet based models use 3D convolution to learn the spatiotemporal features and apply sequential convolutional layers to enhance the temporal relationship of the outputs. The Sparse-UNet model uses sparse convolutions as the backbone for spatiotemporal feature learning. Since the latter algorithm mainly focuses on non-zero data points of the inputs, it dramatically reduces the computation time, while maintaining a competitive accuracy. Our results show that both of the proposed models achieve much better performance than the baseline algorithms. The codes and pretrained models are available at https://github.com/resuly/Traffic4Cast-2021.

OctField: Hierarchical Implicit Functions for 3D Modeling

Recent advances in localized implicit functions have enabled neural implicit representation to be scalable to large scenes. However, the regular subdivision of 3D space employed by these approaches fails to take into account the sparsity of the surface occupancy and the varying granularities of geometric details. As a result, its memory footprint grows cubically with the input volume, leading to a prohibitive computational cost even at a moderately dense decomposition. In this work, we present a learnable hierarchical implicit representation for 3D surfaces, coded OctField, that allows high-precision encoding of intricate surfaces with low memory and computational budget. The key to our approach is an adaptive decomposition of 3D scenes that only distributes local implicit functions around the surface of interest. We achieve this goal by introducing a hierarchical octree structure to adaptively subdivide the 3D space according to the surface occupancy and the richness of part geometry. As octree is discrete and non-differentiable, we further propose a novel hierarchical network that models the subdivision of octree cells as a probabilistic process and recursively encodes and decodes both octree structure and surface geometry in a differentiable manner. We demonstrate the value of OctField for a range of shape modeling and reconstruction tasks, showing superiority over alternative approaches.

Revisit the isospin violating decays of $X(3872)$

In this work, we revisit the isospin violating decays of $X(3872)$ in a coupled-channel effective field theory. In the molecular scheme, the $X(3872)$ is interpreted as the bound state of $\bar{D}^{*0}D^0/\bar{D}^0D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}D^+/D^-D^{*+}$ channels. In a cutoff-independent formalism, we relate the coupling constants of $X(3872)$ with the two channels to the molecular wave function. The isospin violating decays of $X(3872)$ are obtained by two equivalent approaches, which amend some deficiencies about this issue in literature. In the quantum field theory approach, the isospin violating decays arise from the coupling constants of $X(3872)$ to two di-meson channels. In the quantum mechanics approach, the isospin violating is attributed to wave functions at the origin. We illustrate that how to cure the insufficient results in literature. Within the comprehensive analysis, we bridge the isospin violating decays of $X(3872)$ to its inner structure. Our results show that the proportion of the neutral channel in $X(3872)$ is over $80\%$. As a by-product, we calculate the strong decay width of $X(3872)\to \bar{D}^0 D^0π^0$ and radiative one $X(3872)\to \bar{D}^0 D^0γ$. The strong decay width and radiative decay width are about 30 keV and 10 keV, respectively, for the binding energy from $-300$ keV to $-50$ keV.

Systematics of the heavy flavor hadronic molecules

With a quark level interaction, we give a unified description of the loosely bound molecular systems composed of the heavy flavor hadrons $(\bar{D},\bar{D}^*)$, $(Λ_c, Σ_c, Σ_c^*)$, and $(Ξ_c, Ξ_c^\prime,Ξ_c^*)$. Using the $P_c$ states as inputs to fix the interaction strength of light quark-quark pairs, we reproduce the observed $P_{cs}$ and $T_{cc}^+$ states and predict another narrow $T_{cc}^{\prime+}$ state with quantum numbers $[D^*D^*]_{J=1}^{I=0}$. If we require a satisfactory description of the $T_{cc}^+$ and $P_c$ states simultaneously, our framework prefers the assignments of the $P_{c}(4440)$ and $P_{c}(4457)$ as the $[Σ_c\bar{D}^*]_{J=1/2}^{I=1/2}$ and $[Σ_c\bar{D}^*]_{J=3/2}^{I=1/2}$ states, respectively. We propose the isospin criterion to explain naturally why the experimentally observed $T_{cc}$, $P_c$, and $P_{cs}$ molecular candidates prefer the lowest isospin numbers. We also predict the loosely bound states for the bottom di-hadrons.

Fast and Accurate Road Crack Detection Based on Adaptive Cost-Sensitive Loss Function

Numerous detection problems in computer vision, including road crack detection, suffer from exceedingly foreground-background imbalance. Fortunately, modification of loss function appears to solve this puzzle once and for all. In this paper, we propose a pixel-based adaptive weighted cross-entropy loss in conjunction with Jaccard distance to facilitate high-quality pixel-level road crack detection. Our work profoundly demonstrates the influence of loss functions on detection outcomes, and sheds light on the sophisticated consecutive improvements in the realm of crack detection. Specifically, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed loss, we conduct extensive experiments on four public databases, i.e., CrackForest, AigleRN, Crack360, and BJN260. Compared with the vanilla weighted cross-entropy, the proposed loss significantly speeds up the training process while retaining the test accuracy.

Probing the long-range structure of the $T_{cc}^+$ with the strong and electromagnetic decays

Very recently, the LHCb Collaboration reported the doubly charmed tetraquark state $T_{cc}^+$ below the $D^{*+}D^0$ threshold about $273$ keV. As a very near-threshold state, its long-distance structure is very important. In the molecular scheme, we relate the coupling constants of $T_{cc}^+$ with $D^{*0}D^+$ and $D^{*+}D^0$ to its binding energy and mixing angle of two components with a coupled-channel effective field theory. With the coupling constants, we investigate the kinetically allowed strong decays $T_{cc}^+\to D^0D^0π^+$, $T_{cc}^+\to D^+D^0π^0$ and radiative decays $D^+D^0 γ$. Our results show that the decay width of $T_{cc}^+\to D^0D^0π^+$ is the largest one, which is just the experimental observation channel. Our theoretical total strong and radiative widths are in favor of the $T_{cc}^+$ as a $|D^{*+}D^0\rangle$ dominated bound state. The total strong and radiative width in the single channel limit and isospin singlet limit are given as $59.7^{+4.6}_{-4.4} \text{ keV}$ and $46.7^{+2.7}_{-2.9} \text{ keV}$, respectively. Our calculation is cutoff-independent and without prior isospin assignment. The absolute partial widths and ratios of the different decay channels can be used to test the structure of $T_{cc}^+$ state when the updated experimental results are available.
