Spin Polarization and Dispersion Effects in Emergence of Roaming Transition State for Nitrobenzene Isomerization

Since roaming was found as a new but common reaction path of isomerization, many of its properties, especially those of roaming transition state (TSR), have been studied recently on many systems. However, the mechanism of roaming is still not clear at the atomic level. In this work, we used first-principles calculations to illustrate the detailed structure of TSR in an internal isomerization process of nitrobenzene. The calculations distinctively show its nature of antiferromagnetic coupling between two roaming fragments. Moreover, the effect of dispersion is also revealed as an important issue for the stability of the TSR. Our work provides a new insight from the view of electronic structure towards the TSR and contributes to the basic understanding of the roaming systems.

How priors of initial hyperparameters affect Gaussian process regression models

The hyperparameters in Gaussian process regression (GPR) model with a specified kernel are often estimated from the data via the maximum marginal likelihood. Due to the non-convexity of marginal likelihood with respect to the hyperparameters, the optimization may not converge to the global maxima. A common approach to tackle this issue is to use multiple starting points randomly selected from a specific prior distribution. As a result the choice of prior distribution may play a vital role in the predictability of this approach. However, there exists little research in the literature to study the impact of the prior distributions on the hyperparameter estimation and the performance of GPR. In this paper, we provide the first empirical study on this problem using simulated and real data experiments. We consider different types of priors for the initial values of hyperparameters for some commonly used kernels and investigate the influence of the priors on the predictability of GPR models. The results reveal that, once a kernel is chosen, different priors for the initial hyperparameters have no significant impact on the performance of GPR prediction, despite that the estimates of the hyperparameters are very different to the true values in some cases.

The double-degenerate model for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae

The double-degenerate (DD) model, involving the merging of massive double carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) driven by gravitational wave radiation, is one of the classical pathways for the formation of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Recently, it has been proposed that the WD+He subgiant channel has a significant contribution to the production of massive double WDs, in which the primary WD accumulates mass by accreting He-rich matter from a He subgiant. We evolved about 1800 CO WD+He star systems and obtained a large and dense grid for producing SNe Ia through the DD model. We then performed a series of binary population synthesis simulations for the DD model, in which the WD+He subgiant channel is calculated by interpolations in this grid. According to our standard model, the Galactic birthrate of SNe Ia is about 2.4*10^{-3} yr^{-1} for the WD+He subgiant channel of the DD model; the total birthrate is about 3.7*10^{-3} yr^{-1} for all channels, reproducing that of observations. Previous theoretical models still have deficit with the observed SNe Ia with delay times <1 Gyr and >8 Gyr. After considering the WD+He subgiant channel, we found that the delay time distributions is comparable with the observed results. Additionally, some recent studies proposed that the violent WD mergers are more likely to produce SNe Ia based on the DD model. We estimated that the violent mergers through the DD model may only contribute to about 16% of all SNe Ia.

Controlled manipulation of oxygen vacancies using nanoscale flexoelectricity

Oxygen vacancies, especially their distribution, are directly coupled to the electromagnetic properties of oxides and related emergent functionalities that have implication in device applications. Here using a homoepitaxial strontium titanate thin film, we demonstrate a controlled manipulation of the oxygen vacancy distribution using the mechanical force from a scanning probe microscope tip. By combining Kelvin probe force microscopy imaging and phase-field simulations, we show that oxygen vacancies can move under a stress-gradient-induced depolarisation field. When tailored, this nanoscale flexoelectric effect enables a controlled spatial modulation. In motion, the scanning probe tip thereby deterministically reconfigures the spatial distribution of vacancies. The ability to locally manipulate oxygen vacancies on-demand provides a tool for the exploration of mesoscale quantum phenomena, and engineering multifunctional oxide devices.

Calculation of SPH and VSH Expansions

We present in this paper a spectrally accurate numerical method for computing the spherical/vector spherical harmonic expansion of a function/vector field with given (elemental) nodal values on a spherical surface. Built upon suitable analytic formulas for dealing with the involved highly oscillatory integrands, the method is robust for high mode expansions. We apply the numerical method to the simulation of three-dimensional acoustic and electromagnetic multiple scattering problems. Various numerical evidences show that the high accuracy can be achieved within reasonable computational time. This also paves the way for spectral-element discretization of 3D scattering problems reduced by spherical transparent boundary conditions based on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

SYSTRAN Purely Neural MT Engines for WMT2017

This paper describes SYSTRAN's systems submitted to the WMT 2017 shared news translation task for English-German, in both translation directions. Our systems are built using OpenNMT, an open-source neural machine translation system, implementing sequence-to-sequence models with LSTM encoder/decoders and attention. We experimented using monolingual data automatically back-translated. Our resulting models are further hyper-specialised with an adaptation technique that finely tunes models according to the evaluation test sentences.

Discovery of two new hypervelocity stars from the LAMOST spectroscopic surveys

We report the discovery of two new unbound hypervelocity stars (HVSs) from the LAMOST spectroscopic surveys. They are respectively a B2V type star of ~ 7 M$_{\rm \odot}$ with a Galactic rest-frame radial velocity of 502 km/s at a Galactocentric radius of ~ 21 kpc and a B7V type star of ~ 4 M$_{\rm \odot}$ with a Galactic rest-frame radial velocity of 408 km/s at a Galactocentric radius of ~ 30 kpc. The origins of the two HVSs are not clear given their currently poorly measured proper motions. However, the future data releases of Gaia should provide proper motion measurements accurate enough to solve this problem. The ongoing LAMOST spectroscopic surveys are expected to yield more HVSs to form a statistical sample, providing vital constraint on understanding the nature of HVSs and their ejection mechanisms.

He-accreting carbon-oxygen white dwarfs and type Ia supernovae

He accretion onto carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) plays a fundamental role when studying the formation of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Employing the MESA stellar evolution code, we calculated the long-term evolution of He-accreting CO WDs. Previous studies usually supposed that a WD can grow in mass to the Chandrasekhar limit in the stable He burning region and finally produce a SN Ia. However, in this study we find that off-centre carbon ignition occurs in the stable He burning region if the accretion rate is above a critical value (~2.05*10^{-6}{M$_\odot$}{yr}^-1), resulting in accretion-induced collapse rather than a SN Ia. If the accretion rate is below the critical value, explosive carbon ignition will eventually happen in the centre producing a SN Ia. Taking into account the possibility of off-centre carbon ignition, we have re-determined the initial parameter space that produces SNe Ia in the He star donor channel, one of the promising channels to produce SNe Ia in young populations. Since this parameter space is smaller than was found in the previous study of Wang et al. (2009), the SN Ia rates are also correspondingly smaller. We also determined the chemical abundance profile of the He-accreting WDs at the moment of explosive carbon ignition, which can be used as initial input for SN Ia explosion models.

Merging of a CO WD and a He-rich white dwarf to produce a type Ia supernovae

Context: Although type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play a key role in astrophysics, the companions of the exploding carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) are still not completely identified. It has been suggested recently that a He-rich WD (a He WD or a hybrid HeCO WD) merges with a CO WD may produce an SN Ia. This theory was based on the double-detonation model, in which the shock compression in the CO core caused by the surface explosion of the He-rich shell might lead to the explosion of the whole CO WD. However, so far, very few binary population synthesis (BPS) studies have been made on the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD in the context of SNe Ia. Aims: We aim to systematically study the Galactic birthrates and delay-time distributions of SNe Ia based on the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD. Methods: We performed a series of Monte Carlo BPS simulations to investigate the properties of SNe Ia from the merging of a CO WD and a He-rich WD based on the Hurley rapid binary evolution code. We also considered the influence of different metallicities on the final results. Results: From our simulations, we found that no more than 15% of all SNe Ia stem from the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD, and their delay times range from ~110 Myr to the Hubble time. This scenario mainly contributes to SN Ia explosions with intermediate and long delay times. The present work indicates that the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD can roughly reproduce the birthrates of SN 1991bg-like events, and cover the range of their delay times. We also found that SN Ia birthrates from this scenario would be higher for the cases with low metallicities.

Stochastic Burgers equation with fractional derivative driven by multiplicative noise

This article is devoted to the study of the existence and uniqueness of mild solution to time- and space-fractional stochastic Burgers equation perturbed by multiplicative white noise. The required results are obtained by stochastic analysis techniques, fractional calculus and semigroup theory. We also proved the regularity properties of mild solution for this generalized Burgers equation.

Towards Real-Time, Country-Level Location Classification of Worldwide Tweets

In contrast to much previous work that has focused on location classification of tweets restricted to a specific country, here we undertake the task in a broader context by classifying global tweets at the country level, which is so far unexplored in a real-time scenario. We analyse the extent to which a tweet's country of origin can be determined by making use of eight tweet-inherent features for classification. Furthermore, we use two datasets, collected a year apart from each other, to analyse the extent to which a model trained from historical tweets can still be leveraged for classification of new tweets. With classification experiments on all 217 countries in our datasets, as well as on the top 25 countries, we offer some insights into the best use of tweet-inherent features for an accurate country-level classification of tweets. We find that the use of a single feature, such as the use of tweet content alone -- the most widely used feature in previous work -- leaves much to be desired. Choosing an appropriate combination of both tweet content and metadata can actually lead to substantial improvements of between 20\% and 50\%. We observe that tweet content, the user's self-reported location and the user's real name, all of which are inherent in a tweet and available in a real-time scenario, are particularly useful to determine the country of origin. We also experiment on the applicability of a model trained on historical tweets to classify new tweets, finding that the choice of a particular combination of features whose utility does not fade over time can actually lead to comparable performance, avoiding the need to retrain. However, the difficulty of achieving accurate classification increases slightly for countries with multiple commonalities, especially for English and Spanish speaking countries.

Exploring the $Υ(6S)\to χ_{bJ}ϕ$ and $Υ(6S)\to χ_{bJ}ω$ hidden-bottom hadronic transitions

In this work, we investigate the hadronic loop contributions to the $Υ(6S) \to χ_{bJ} ϕ~(J=0,1,2)$ along with $Υ(6S) \to χ_{bJ} ω~(J=0,1,2)$ transitions. We predict that the branching ratios of $Υ(6S) \to χ_{b0} ϕ$, $Υ(6S) \to χ_{b1} ϕ$ and $Υ(6S) \to χ_{b2} ϕ$ are $(0.68 \sim 4.62) \times 10^{-6}$, $(0.50 \sim 3.43) \times 10^{-6}$ and $(2.22 \sim 15.18) \times 10^{-6}$, respectively and those of $Υ(6S) \to χ_{b0} ω$, $Υ(6S) \to χ_{b1} ω$ and $Υ(6S) \to χ_{b2} ω$ are $(0.15 \sim 2.81) \times 10^{-3}$, $(0.63 \sim 11.68) \times 10^{-3}$ and $(1.08 \sim 20.02) \times 10^{-3}$, respectively. Especially, some typical ratios, which reflect the relative magnitudes of the predicted branching ratios, are given, i.e., for $Υ(6S)\to χ_{bJ}ϕ$ transitions, $\mathcal{R}^ϕ_{10}={\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b1} ϕ]}/{\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b0} ϕ]} \approx 0.74$, $\mathcal{R}^ϕ_{20}= {\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b2} ϕ]}/{\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b0} ϕ]} \approx 3.28$, and $\mathcal{R}^ϕ_{21} = {\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b2} ϕ]}/{\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b1} ϕ]} \approx 4.43$, and for $Υ(6S)\to χ_{bJ}ω$ transitions, $\mathcal{R}^ω_{10}={\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b1} ω]}/{\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b0} ω]} \approx 4.11$, $\mathcal{R}^ω_{20}= {\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b2} ω]}/{\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b0} ω]} \approx 7.06$, and $\mathcal{R}^ω_{21} = {\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b2} ω]}/{\mathcal{B}[Υ(6S) \to χ_{b1} ω]} \approx 1.72$. With the running of BelleII in the near future, experimental measurement of these two kinds of transitions will be a potential research issue.

Faster Mutation Analysis via Equivalence Modulo States

Mutation analysis has many applications, such as asserting the quality of test suites and localizing faults. One important bottleneck of mutation analysis is scalability. The latest work explores the possibility of reducing the redundant execution via split-stream execution. However, split-stream execution is only able to remove redundant execution before the first mutated statement. In this paper we try to also reduce some of the redundant execution after the execution of the first mutated statement. We observe that, although many mutated statements are not equivalent, the execution result of those mutated statements may still be equivalent to the result of the original statement. In other words, the statements are equivalent modulo the current state. In this paper we propose a fast mutation analysis approach, AccMut. AccMut automatically detects the equivalence modulo states among a statement and its mutations, then groups the statements into equivalence classes modulo states, and uses only one process to represent each class. In this way, we can significantly reduce the number of split processes. Our experiments show that our approach can further accelerate mutation analysis on top of split-stream execution with a speedup of 2.56x on average.

A Robust Fiber-based Frequency Synchronization System Immune to Dramatic Temperature Fluctuation

Fiber-based frequency synchronization system is sensitive to temperature change because of the limited isolation and nonlinear effect of RF components in the system. In order to make it suitable for the use of large-scale scientific and engineering projects in which the ambient temperature of the fiber link changes dramatically, we designed a non-harmonic frequency dissemination system immune to temperature fluctuation. After the lab tests in which the ambient temperature of fiber fluctuates 40 degrees centigrade per day and 20 degrees centigrade per hour respectively, the relative frequency stabilities of this system reached 4.0 E-14/s and 3.0 E-16/1E4 s. It is demonstrated that the proposed non-harmonic scheme shows a strong robustness to the complicated working environment with dramatic temperature fluctuation.

Comparison principles and Lipschitz regularity for some nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations

We establish interior Lipschitz regularity for continuous viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear, conformally invariant, degenerate elliptic equations. As a by-product of our method, we also prove a weak form of the strong comparison principle, which we refer to as the principle of propagation of touching points, for operators of the form $\nabla^2 ψ+ L(x,ψ,\nabla ψ)$ which are non-decreasing in $ψ$.

On the study of stochastic fractional-order differential equation systems

In this article, the existence and uniqueness about the solution for a class of stochastic fractional-order differential equation systems are investigated, where the fractional derivative is described in Caputo sense. The fractional calculus, stochastic analysis techniques and the standard Picard's iteration are used to obtain the required results, the nonlinear term is satisfied with some non-Lipschitz conditions (where the classical Lipschitz conditions are special cases). The stochastic fractional-order Newton-Leipnik and Lorenz systems are provided to illustrate the obtained theory, and numerical simulation results are also given by the modified Adams predictor-corrector scheme.

Measuring Asymmetric Opinions on Online Social Interrelationship with Language and Network Features

Instead of studying the properties of social relationship from an objective view, in this paper, we focus on individuals' subjective and asymmetric opinions on their interrelationships. Inspired by the theories from sociolinguistics, we investigate two individuals' opinions on their interrelationship with their interactive language features. Eliminating the difference of personal language style, we clarify that the asymmetry of interactive language feature values can indicate individuals' asymmetric opinions on their interrelationship. We also discuss how the degree of opinions' asymmetry is related to the individuals' personality traits. Furthermore, to measure the individuals' asymmetric opinions on interrelationship concretely, we develop a novel model synthetizing interactive language and social network features. The experimental results with Enron email dataset provide multiple evidences of the asymmetric opinions on interrelationship, and also verify the effectiveness of the proposed model in measuring the degree of opinions' asymmetry.

Prediction of anomalous $Υ(5S)\toΥ(1^3D_J)η$ transitions

In this work, we study the hadronic loop contribution to the $Υ(5S)\to Υ(1^3D_J)η$ ($J=1,2,3$) transitions. We predict that the branching ratios of $Υ(5S)\to Υ(1^3D_1)η$, $Υ(5S)\to Υ(1^3D_2)η$ and $Υ(5S)\to Υ(1^3D_3)η$ can reach up to $(0.5\sim5.1)\times10^{-3}$, $(0.7\sim7.5)\times10^{-3}$ and $(0.9\sim9.6)\times10^{-4}$, respectively. Since these predicted hadronic transitions of $Υ(5S)$ are comparable with these observed $Υ(5S)\to Υ(nS)π^+π^-$ $(n=1,2,3)$, we suggest future experiment like Belle and BelleII to carry out the search for these anomalous $Υ(5S)\to Υ(1^3D_J)η$ transitions.
