Electronic structure contribution to hydrogen bonding interaction of a water dimer

Hydrogen bond (H-bond) covalency has recently been observed in ice and liquid water, while the penetrating molecular orbitals (MOs) in the H-bond region of most typical water dimer system, (H2O)2, have also been discovered. However, obtaining the quantitative contribution of these MOs to the H-bond interaction is still problematic. In this work, we introduced the orbital-resolved electron density projected integral (EDPI) along the H-bond to approach this problem. The calculations show that, surprisingly, the electronic occupied orbital (HOMO-4) of (H2O)2 accounts for about 40% of the electron density at the bond critical point. Moreover, the charge transfer analysis visualizes the electron accumulating effect of the orbital interaction within the H-bond between water molecules, supporting its covalent-like character. Our work expands the classical understanding of H-bond with specific contributions from certain MOs, and will also advance further research into such covalency and offer quantitative electronic structure insights into intermolecular systems.

Structure vs. Language: Investigating the Multi-factors of Asymmetric Opinions on Online Social Interrelationship with a Case Study

Though current researches often study the properties of online social relationship from an objective view, we also need to understand individuals' subjective opinions on their interrelationships in social computing studies. Inspired by the theories from sociolinguistics, the latest work indicates that interactive language can reveal individuals' asymmetric opinions on their interrelationship. In this work, in order to explain the opinions' asymmetry on interrelationship with more latent factors, we extend the investigation from single relationship to the structural context in online social network. We analyze the correlation between interactive language features and the structural context of interrelationships. The structural context of vertex, edges and triangles in social network are considered. With statistical analysis on Enron email dataset, we find that individuals' opinions (measured by interactive language features) on their interrelationship are related to some of their important structural context in social network. This result can help us to understand and measure the individuals' opinions on their interrelationship with more intrinsic information.

SYSTRAN's Pure Neural Machine Translation Systems

Since the first online demonstration of Neural Machine Translation (NMT) by LISA, NMT development has recently moved from laboratory to production systems as demonstrated by several entities announcing roll-out of NMT engines to replace their existing technologies. NMT systems have a large number of training configurations and the training process of such systems is usually very long, often a few weeks, so role of experimentation is critical and important to share. In this work, we present our approach to production-ready systems simultaneously with release of online demonstrators covering a large variety of languages (12 languages, for 32 language pairs). We explore different practical choices: an efficient and evolutive open-source framework; data preparation; network architecture; additional implemented features; tuning for production; etc. We discuss about evaluation methodology, present our first findings and we finally outline further work. Our ultimate goal is to share our expertise to build competitive production systems for "generic" translation. We aim at contributing to set up a collaborative framework to speed-up adoption of the technology, foster further research efforts and enable the delivery and adoption to/by industry of use-case specific engines integrated in real production workflows. Mastering of the technology would allow us to build translation engines suited for particular needs, outperforming current simplest/uniform systems.

The core-degenerate scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae

The origin of the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is still uncertain. The core-degenerate (CD) scenario has been proposed as an alternative way for the production of SNe Ia. In this scenario, SNe Ia are formed at the final stage of common-envelope evolution from a merger of a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) with the CO core of an asymptotic giant branch companion. However, the birthrates of SNe Ia from this scenario are still not well determined. In this work, we performed a detailed investigation on the CD scenario based on a binary population synthesis approach. The SN Ia delay times from this scenario are basically in the range of 90Myr-2500Myr, mainly contributing to the observed SNe Ia with short and intermediate delay times although this scenario can also produce some old SNe Ia. Meanwhile, our work indicates that the Galactic birthrates of SNe Ia from this scenario are no more than 20% of total SNe Ia due to more careful treatment of mass transfer. Although the SN Ia birthrates in the present work are lower than those in Ilkov & Soker, the CD scenario cannot be ruled out as a viable mechanism for the formation of SNe Ia. Especially, SNe Ia with circumstellar material from this scenario contribute to 0.7-10% of total SNe Ia, which means that the CD scenario can reproduce the observed birthrates of SNe Ia like PTF 11kx. We also found that SNe Ia happen systemically earlier for a high value of metallicity and their birthrates increase with metallicity.

The violent white dwarf merger scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae

Recent observations suggest that some type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) originate from the merging of two carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs). Meanwhile, recent hydrodynamical simulations have indicated that the accretion-induced collapse may be avoided under certain conditions when double WDs merge violently. However, the properties of SNe Ia from this violent merger scenario are highly dependent on a particular mass-accretion stage, the so-called WD + He subgiant channel, during which the primary WD is able to increase its mass by accreting He-rich material from a He subgiant before the systems evolves into a double WD system. In this article, we aim to study this particular evolutionary stage systematically and give the properties of violent WD mergers. By employing the Eggleton stellar evolution code, we followed a large number of binary calculations and obtained the regions in parameter space for producing violent mergers based on the WD + He subgiant channel. According to these simulations, we found that the primary WDs can increase their mass by ~0.10-0.45 Msun during the mass-accretion stage. We then conducted a series of binary population synthesis calculations and found that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from this channel is about 0.01-0.4*10-3 yr-1. This suggests that the violent WD mergers from this channel may only contribute to ~0.3%-10% of all SNe Ia in our Galaxy. The delay times of violent WD mergers from this channel are >1.7 Gyr, contributing to the SNe Ia in old populations. We also found that the WD + He subgiant channel is the dominent way for producing violent WD mergers that may be able to eventually explode as SNe Ia.

A balanced rail-to-rail all digital comparator using only standard cells

An all-digital comparator with full input range is presented. It outperforms the nowaday all-digital comparators with its large rail-to-rail input range. This is achieved by the proposed Yin-yang balance mechanism between the two logic gates: NAND3 and OAI (Or-And-Invert). The important design considerations to achieve this balance are presented, such as the driving strength manipulation and the use of pre-distortion technique. Constructed only by commercially available digital standard cells, the layout of the proposed comparator is generated automatically by standard digital Place & Route routine within several minutes. The Verilog code for the proposed circuit is given, and the circuit is successfully implemented in 130nm CMOS technology with the power consumption of 0.176mW at the clock of 330MHz.

Server Consolidation for Internet Applications in Virtualized Data Centers

Server consolidation based on virtualization technology simplifies system administration and improves energy efficiency by improving resource utilizations and reducing the physical machine (PM) number in contemporary service-oriented data centers. The elasticity of Internet applications changes the consolidation technologies from addressing virtual machines (VMs) to PMs mapping schemes which must know the VMs statuses, i.e. the number of VMs and the profiling data of each VM, into providing the application-to-VM-to-PM mapping. In this paper, we study on the consolidation of multiple Internet applications, minimizing the number of PMs with required performance. We first model the consolidation providing the application-to-VM-to-PM mapping to minimize the number of PMs as an integer linear programming problem, and then present a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem in polynomial time. Extensive experimental results show that our heuristic algorithm consumes less than 4.3% more resources than the optimal amounts with few overheads. Existing consolidation technologies using the input of the VM statuses output by our heuristic algorithm consume 1.06% more PMs.

Managing Deadline-constrained Bag-of-Tasks Jobs on Hybrid Clouds

Outsourcing jobs to a public cloud is a cost-effective way to address the problem of satisfying the peak resource demand when the local cloud has insufficient resources. In this paper, we study on managing deadline-constrained bag-of-tasks jobs on hybrid clouds. We present a binary nonlinear programming (BNP) problem to model the hybrid cloud management where the utilization of physical machines (PMs) in the local cloud/cluster is maximized when the local resources are enough to satisfy the deadline constraints of jobs, while when not, the rent cost from the public cloud is minimized. To solve this BNP problem in polynomial time, we proposed a heuristic algorithm. Its main idea is assigning the task closest to its deadline to current core until the core cannot finish any task within its deadline. When there is no available core, the algorithm adds an available PM with most capacity or rents a new VM with highest cost-performance ratio. Extensive experimental results show that our heuristic algorithm saves 16.2%-76% rent cost and improves 47.3%-182.8% resource utilizations satisfying deadline constraints, compared with first fit decreasing algorithm.

Using $X(3823)\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ to identify coupled-channel effects

Very recently, the Belle and BESIII experiments observed a new charmonium-like state $X(3823)$, which is a good candidate for the $D$-wave charmonium $ψ(1^3D_2)$. Because the $X(3823)$ is just near the $D\bar{D}^*$ threshold, the decay $X(3823)\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ can be a golden channel to test the significance of coupled-channel effects. In this work, this decay is considered including both the hidden-charm dipion and the usual quantum chromodynamics multipole expansion (QCDME) contributions. The partial decay width, the dipion invariant mass spectrum distribution $\mathrm{d}Γ[X(3823)\to J/ψπ^+π^-]/\mathrm{d}m_{π^+π^-}$, and the corresponding $\mathrm{d}Γ[X(3823)\to J/ψπ^+π^-]/\mathrm{d}\cosθ$ distribution are computed. Many parameters are determined from existing experimental data, so the results depend mainly only on one unknown phase between the QCDME and hidden-charm dipion amplitudes.

A Luminous Peculiar Type Ia Supernova SN 2011hr: More Like SN 1991T or SN 2007if?

Photometric and spectroscopic observations of a slowly declining, luminous Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2011hr in the starburst galaxy NGC 2691 are presented. SN 2011hr is found to peak at $M_{B}=-19.84 \pm 0.40\,\rm{mag}$, with a post-maximum decline rate $Δ$m$_{15}$(B) = 0.92 $\pm$ 0.03\,$\rm{mag}$. From the maximum-light bolometric luminosity, $L=(2.30 \pm 0.90) \times 10^{43}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$, we estimate the mass of synthesized \Nifs\ in SN 2011hr to be $M(\rm{^{56}Ni})=1.11 \pm 0.43\,M_{\sun}$. SN 2011hr appears more luminous than SN 1991T at around maximum light, and the absorption features from its intermediate-mass elements (IMEs) are noticeably weaker than the latter at similar phases. Spectral modeling suggests that SN 2011hr has the IMEs of $\sim$\,0.07 M$_{\sun}$ in the outer ejecta, which is much lower than the typical value of normal SNe Ia (i.e., 0.3 -- 0.4 M$_{\sun}$) and is also lower than the value of SN 1991T (i.e., $\sim$\,0.18 M$_{\sun}$). These results indicate that SN 2011hr may arise from a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf progenitor that experienced a more efficient burning process in the explosion. Nevertheless, it is still possible that SN 2011hr may serve as a transitional object connecting the SN 1991T-like SNe Ia with the superluminous subclass like SN 2007if given that the latter also shows very weak IMEs at all phases.

Study of Memristor-based Oscillatory Neural Networks using PPV modeling

Memristor-based oscillator is becoming promising thanks to its inherent NDR (Negative Differential Region) property and compact circuit structure. This paves the way to the large scale oscillatory neural network (ONN) and the realization of pattern recognition based on its global synchronization. However, the simulation of large scale ONN encounters the problem of long simulation time because of the large number of oscillators. Here we propose a highly efficient method to abstract the phase sensitivity characteristic of the memristor-based oscillator, i.e., its PPV (Perturbation Projection Vector), which allows reducing considerably the complexity of ONN simulation, and speeding up the simulation more than 2000 times. Our study also reveals the impact of the circuit parameters on the pattern recognition accuracy and the robustness against the frequency mismatch.

PPV modelling of memristor-based oscillator

In this letter, we propose for the first time a method of abstracting the PPV (Perturbation Projection Vector) characteristic of the up-to-date memristor-based oscillators. Inspired from biological oscillators and its characteristic named PRC (Phase Response Curve), we build a bridge between PRC and PPV. This relationship is verified rigorously using the transistor level simulation of Colpitts and ring oscillators, i.e., comparing the PPV converted from PRC and the PPV obtained from accurate PSS+PXF simulation. Then we apply this method to the PPV calculation of the memristor-based oscillator. By keeping the phase dynamics of the oscillator and dropping the details of voltage/current amplitude, the PPV modelling is highly efficient to describe the phase dynamics due to the oscillator coupling, and will be very suitable for the fast simulation of large scale oscillatory neural networks.

Super-Eddington wind scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae: Accreting He-rich matter onto white dwarfs

Supernovae of type Ia (SNe Ia) are believed to be thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs). However, the mass accretion process onto CO WDs is still not completely understood. In this paper, we study the accretion of He-rich matter onto CO WDs and explore a scenario in which a strong wind forms on the surface of the WD if the total luminosity exceeds the Eddington limit. Using a stellar evolution code called modules for experiments in stellar astrophysics (MESA), we simulated the He accretion process onto CO WDs for WDs with masses of 0.6-1.35Msun and various accretion rates of 10^{-8}-10^{-5}Msun/yr. If the contribution of the total luminosity is included when determining the Eddington accretion rate, then a super-Eddington wind could be triggered at relatively lower accretion rates than those of previous studies based on steady-state models. The super-Eddington wind can prevent the WDs with high accretion rates from evolving into red-giant-like He stars. We found that the contributions from thermal energy of the WD are non-negligible, judging by our simulations, even though the nuclear burning energy is the dominating source of luminosity. We also provide the limits of the steady He-burning regime in which the WDs do not lose any accreted matter and increase their mass steadily, and calculated the mass retention efficiency during He layer flashes for various WD masses and accretion rates. These obtained results can be used in future binary population synthesis computations.

Polarization-Independent and High-Efficiency Dielectric Metasurfaces Spanning 600-800 nm Wavelengths

Artificial metasurfaces are capable of completely manipulating the phase, amplitude, and polarization of light with high spatial resolutions. The emerging design based on high-index and low-loss dielectrics has led to the realization of novel metasurfaces with high transmissions, but these devices usually operate at the limited bandwidth, and are sensitive to the incident polarization. Here, for the first time we report experimentally the polarization-independent and high-efficiency dielectric metasurfaces spanning the visible wavelengths about 200 nm, which are of importance for novel flat optical devices operating over a broad spectrum. The diffraction efficiencies of the gradient metasurfaces consisting of the multi-fold symmetric nano-crystalline silicon nanopillars are up to 93% at 670 nm, and exceed 75% at the wavelengths from 600 to 800 nm for the two orthogonally polarized incidences. These dielectric metasurfaces hold great potential to replace prisms, lenses and other conventional optical elements.

Pre-explosion companion stars in Type Iax supernovae

Type Iax supernovae (SNe Iax) are proposed as one new sub-class of SNe Ia since they present observational properties that are sufficiently distinct from the bulk of SNe Ia. SNe Iax are the most common of all types of peculiar SNe by both number and rate, with an estimated rate of occurrence of about 5-30% of the total SN Ia rate. However, the progenitor systems of SNe Iax are still uncertain. Analyzing pre-explosion images at SN Iax positions provides a direct way to place strong constraints on the nature of progenitor systems of SNe Iax. In this work, we predict pre-explosion properties of binary companion stars in a variety of potential progenitor systems by performing detailed binary evolution calculations with the one-dimensional stellar evolution code STARS. This will be helpful for constraining progenitor systems of SNe Iax from their pre-explosion observations. With our binary evolution calculations, it is found that the non-degenerate helium (He) companion star to both a massive C/O WD (> 1.1 solar mass) and a hybrid C/O/Ne WD can provide an explanation for the observations of SN~2012Z-S1, but the hybrid WD+He star scenario is more favorable.

Covalent features in the hydrogen bond of a water dimer: molecular orbital analysis

The covalent-like characteristics of hydrogen bonds offer a new perspective on intermolecular interactions. Here, using density functional theory and post-Hartree-Fock methods, we reveal that there are two bonding molecular orbitals (MOs) crossing the O and H atoms of the hydrogen-bond in water dimer. Energy decomposition analysis also shows a non-negligible contribution of the induction term. These results illustrate the covalent-like character of the hydrogen bond between water molecules, which contributes to the essential understanding of ice, liquid water, related materials, and life sciences.

19 low mass hyper-velocity star candidates from the first data release of LAMOST survey

Hyper-velocity stars are believed to be ejected out from the Galactic center through dynamical interactions between (binary) stars and the central massive black hole(s). In this paper, we report 19 low mass F/G/K type hyper-velocity star candidates from over one mil- lion stars of the first data release of the LAMOST general survey. We determine the unbound probability for each candidate using a Monte-Carlo simulation by assuming a non-Gaussian proper-motion error distribution, Gaussian heliocentric distance and radial velocity error dis- tributions. The simulation results show that all the candidates have unbound possibilities over 50% as expected, and one of them may even exceed escape velocity with over 90% probabili- ty. In addition, we compare the metallicities of our candidates with the metallicity distribution functions of the Galactic bulge, disk, halo and globular cluster, and conclude that the Galactic bulge or disk is likely the birth place for our candidates.
