Analysis of GPU Parallel Computing based on Matlab

Matlab is very widely used in scientific computing, but Matlab computational efficiency is lower than C language program. In order to improve the computing speed, some toolbox can use GPU to accelerate the computation. This paper describes GPU working principle, our experiments and results analysis of parallel computing by using GPU based on Matlab. Experimental results show that for parallel operations, GPU computing speed is faster than CPU, for the logical instructions, GPU computing speed is slower than CPU.

Portable Microwave Frequency Dissemination in Free Space and Implications on Ground-Satellite Synchronization

Frequency dissemination and synchronization in free space plays an important role in global navigation satellite system, radio astronomy and synthetic aperture radar. In this paper, we demonstrate a portable radio frequency dissemination scheme via free space using microwave antennas. The setup has a good environment adaptability and high dissemination stability. The frequency signal is disseminated at different distances ranging from 10 to 640 m with a fixed 10 Hz locking bandwidth, and the scaling law of dissemination stability on distance and averaging time is discussed. The preliminary extrapolation shows that the dissemination stability may reach $1\times10^{-12}/s$ in ground-to-satellite synchronization, which far exceeds all present methods, and is worthy for further study.

Determining phase-space properties of the IHEP RFQ output beam using the RMS beam widths from wire-scanners

A beam line is built after the IHEP RFQ for halo study. To determine transverse emittance and ellipse parameters of the RFQ output beam, beam size data obtained from the first two of 14 wire scanners are employed. By using the transfer matrix method and the least square method, a set of linear equations were set up and solved. The solutions were then applied as initial beam parameters in multi-particle simulations to check the method of calculation. It is shown that difference between the simulated RMS beam size and the measured one at the measurement location is less than 7%, which is acceptable in our experiments.

Seamless Integration of Global Dirichlet-to-Neumann Boundary Condition and Spectral Elements for Transformation Electromagnetics

In this paper, we present an efficient spectral-element method (SEM) for solving general two-dimensional Helmholtz equations in anisotropic media, with particular applications in accurate simulation of polygonal invisibility cloaks, concentrators and circular rotators arisen from the field of transformation electromagnetics (TE). In practice, we adopt a transparent boundary condition (TBC) characterized by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map to reduce wave propagation in an unbounded domain to a bounded domain. We then introduce a semi-analytic technique to integrate the global TBC with local curvilinear elements seamlessly, which is accomplished by using a novel elemental mapping and analytic formulas for evaluating global Fourier coefficients on spectral-element grids exactly. From the perspective of TE, an invisibility cloak is devised by a singular coordinate transformation of Maxwell's equations that leads to anisotropic materials coating the cloaked region to render any object inside invisible to observers outside. An important issue resides in the imposition of appropriate conditions at the outer boundary of the cloaked region, i.e., cloaking boundary conditions (CBCs), in order to achieve perfect invisibility. Following the spirit of [48], we propose new CBCs for polygonal invisibility cloaks from the essential "pole" conditions related to singular transformations. This allows for the decoupling of the governing equations of inside and outside the cloaked regions. With this efficient spectral-element solver at our disposal, we can study the interesting phenomena when some defects and lossy or dispersive media are placed in the cloaking layer of an ideal polygonal cloak.

Deep Learning for Object Saliency Detection and Image Segmentation

In this paper, we propose several novel deep learning methods for object saliency detection based on the powerful convolutional neural networks. In our approach, we use a gradient descent method to iteratively modify an input image based on the pixel-wise gradients to reduce a cost function measuring the class-specific objectness of the image. The pixel-wise gradients can be efficiently computed using the back-propagation algorithm. The discrepancy between the modified image and the original one may be used as a saliency map for the image. Moreover, we have further proposed several new training methods to learn saliency-specific convolutional nets for object saliency detection, in order to leverage the available pixel-wise segmentation information. Our methods are extremely computationally efficient (processing 20-40 images per second in one GPU). In this work, we use the computed saliency maps for image segmentation. Experimental results on two benchmark tasks, namely Microsoft COCO and Pascal VOC 2012, have shown that our proposed methods can generate high-quality salience maps, clearly outperforming many existing methods. In particular, our approaches excel in handling many difficult images, which contain complex background, highly-variable salient objects, multiple objects, and/or very small salient objects.

Is the X-ray pulsating companion of HD 49798 a possible type Ia supernova progenitor?

HD 49798 (a hydrogen depleted subdwarf O6 star) with its massive white dwarf (WD) companion has been suggested to be a progenitor candidate of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). However, it is still uncertain whether the companion of HD 49798 is a carbon-oxygen (CO) WD or an oxygen-neon (ONe) WD. A CO WD will explode as an SN Ia when its mass grows approach to Chandrasekhar mass, while the outcome of an accreting ONe WD is likely to be a neutron star. We followed a series of Monte Carlo binary population synthesis approach to simulate the formation of ONe WD + He star systems. We found that there is almost no orbital period as large as HD 49798 with its WD companion in these ONe WD + He star systems based on our simulations, which means that the companion of HD 49798 might not be an ONe WD. We suggest that the companion of HD 49798 is most likely a CO WD, which can be expected to increase its mass to the Chandrasekhar mass limit by accreting He-rich material from HD 49798. Thus, HD 49798 with its companion may produce an SN Ia in its future evolution.

Making the Most of Tweet-Inherent Features for Social Spam Detection on Twitter

Social spam produces a great amount of noise on social media services such as Twitter, which reduces the signal-to-noise ratio that both end users and data mining applications observe. Existing techniques on social spam detection have focused primarily on the identification of spam accounts by using extensive historical and network-based data. In this paper we focus on the detection of spam tweets, which optimises the amount of data that needs to be gathered by relying only on tweet-inherent features. This enables the application of the spam detection system to a large set of tweets in a timely fashion, potentially applicable in a real-time or near real-time setting. Using two large hand-labelled datasets of tweets containing spam, we study the suitability of five classification algorithms and four different feature sets to the social spam detection task. Our results show that, by using the limited set of features readily available in a tweet, we can achieve encouraging results which are competitive when compared against existing spammer detection systems that make use of additional, costly user features. Our study is the first that attempts at generalising conclusions on the optimal classifiers and sets of features for social spam detection over different datasets.

Binary population synthesis for the core-degenerate scenario of type Ia supernova progenitors

The core-degenerate (CD) scenario has been suggested to be a possible progenitor model of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), in which a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) merges with the hot CO core of a massive asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star during their common-envelope phase. However, the SN Ia birthrates for this scenario are still uncertain. We conducted a detailed investigation into the CD scenario and then gave the birthrates for this scenario using a detailed Monte Carlo binary population synthesis approach. We found that the delay times of SNe Ia from this scenario are ~70Myrs-1400Myrs, which means that the CD scenario contributes to young SN Ia populations. The Galactic SN Ia birthrates for this scenario are in the range of ~7.4*10^{-5} yr^{-1}-3.7*10^{-4}yr^{-1}, which roughly accounts for ~2-10% of all SNe Ia. This indicates that, under the assumptions made here, the CD scenario only contributes a small portion of all SNe Ia, which is not consistent with the results of Ilkov & Soker (2013).

A super-Eddington wind scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae: binary population synthesis calculations

The super-Eddington wind scenario has been proposed as an alternative way for producing type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The super-Eddington wind can naturally prevent the carbon--oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) with high mass-accretion rates from becoming red-giant-like stars. Furthermore, it works in low-metallicity environments, which may explain SNe Ia observed at high redshifts. In this article, we systematically investigated the most prominent single-degenerate WD+MS channel based on the super-Eddington wind scenario. We combined the Eggleton stellar evolution code with a rapid binary population synthesis (BPS) approach to predict SN Ia birthrates for the WD+MS channel by adopting the super-Eddington wind scenario and detailed mass-accumulation efficiencies of H-shell flashes on the WDs. Our BPS calculations found that the estimated SN Ia birthrates for the WD+MS channel are ~0.009-0.315*10^{-3}{yr}^{-1} if we adopt the Eddington accretion rate as the critical accretion rate, which are much lower than that of the observations (<10% of the observed SN Ia birthrates). This indicates that the WD+MS channel only contributes a small proportion of all SNe Ia. The birthrates in this simulation are lower than previous studies, the main reason of which is that new mass-accumulation efficiencies of H-shell flashes are adopted. We also found that the critical mass-accretion rate has a significant influence on the birthrates of SNe Ia. Meanwhile, the results of our BPS calculations are sensitive to the values of the common-envelope ejection efficiency.

Pseudotensor meson family

The pseudoscalar tensor states, $π_2$, $η_2$, and $K_2$, are systematically studied through the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka- allowed two-body strong decays, including both the observed states reported by the Particle Data Group and the predicted states. Phenomenological analysis combined with the experimental data not only can test the assignments to these discussed states, but it can also predict more abundant information {on} their partial decay widths, which is helpful in the experimental study of these observed and predicted pseudotensor states.

Global quantum discord in infinite quantum spin chains

In this paper, we study global quantum discord (GQD) in infinite-size spin chains. For this purpose, in the framework of matrix product states (MPSs), we propose an effective procedure to calculate GQD (denoted as Gn) for consecutive n-site subchains in infinite chains. For a spin-1/2 three-body interaction model, whose ground state can be exactly expressed as MPSs, We use the procedure to study Gn with n up to $24$. Then for a spin-1/2 XXZ chain, we firstly use infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) algorithm to obtain the approximate wavefunction in the from of MPSs, and then figure out Gn with n up to $18$. In both models, Gn shows an interesting linear growth as the increase of n, that is, Gn = k*n+b. Moreover, in non-critical regions the slope $k$ of Gn converges very fast, while in critical regions it converges relatively slow, and the behaviors are explained in a clear physical picture with the short-range and long-range correlations. Based on these results, we propose to use Gn/n to describe the global correlations in infinite chains. Gn/n has twofold physical meanings. Firstly, it can be regarded as "global discord per site", very similar to "energy per site" or "magnetization per site" in quantum magnetic systems. Secondly, Gn/n (when n is large enough) describes the quantum correlation between a single site and an (n-1)-site block. Then we successfully apply our theory to an exactly soluble infinite-size spin XY chain which is beyond the matrix product formula, and the Hamiltonian can reduce to the transverse-field Ising model and the XX model. The relation between GQD and quantum phase transitions in these models is discussed.

Multi-partite quantum nonlocality and Bell-type inequalities in an infinite-order quantum phase transition of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain

In this paper, combined with infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) algorithm and Bell-type inequalities, we investigate multi-partite quantum nonlocality in an infinite one-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 XXZ system. High hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality can be observed in the gapless phase of the model, meanwhile only the lowest hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality is observed in most regions of the gapped anti-ferromagnetic phase. Thereby, Bell-type inequalities disclose different correlation structures in the two phases of the system. Furthermore, at the infinite-order QPT (or Kosterlitz-Thouless QPT) point of the model, the correlation measures always show a local minimum value, regardless of the length of the subchains. It indicates that relatively low hierarchy of multi-partite nonlocality would be observed at the infinite-order QPT point in a Bell-type experiment. The result is in contrast to the existing results of the second-order QPT in the one-dimensional XY model, where multi-partite nonlocality with the hierarchy has been observed. Thus, multi-partite nonlocality provides us an alternative perspective to distinguish between these two kinds of QPTs. Reliable clues for the existence of tripartite quantum entanglement have also been found.

The hybrid CONe WD + He star scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae

The hybrid CONe white dwarfs (WDs) have been suggested to be possible progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). In this article, we systematically studied the hybrid CONe WD + He star scenario for the progenitors of SNe Ia, in which a hybrid CONe WD increases its mass to the Chandrasekhar mass limit by accreting He-rich material from a non-degenerate He star. According to a series of detailed binary population synthesis simulations, we obtained the SN Ia birthrates and delay times for this scenario. The SN Ia birthrates for this scenario are ~0.033-0.539*10^(-3)yr^(-1), which roughly accounts for 1-18% of all SNe Ia. The estimated delay times are ~28Myr-178Myr, which are the youngest SNe Ia predicted by any progenitor model so far. We suggest that SNe Ia from this scenario may provide an alternative explanation of type Iax SNe. We also presented some properties of the donors at the point when the WDs reach the Chandrasekhar mass. These properties may be a good starting point for investigating the surviving companions of SNe Ia, and for constraining the progenitor scenario studied in this work.

Fiber-based ultra-stable frequency synchronization using client-side, 1f-2f active compensation method

We demonstrate a frequency synchronization scheme with the phase noise compensation function placed at the client site. One transmitting module hence can be linked with multiple client sites. As a performance test, using two separate 50 km fiber spools, we recover the 100 MHz disseminated reference frequencies at two remote sites, separately. Relative frequency stabilities between two recovered frequency signals of 2.8E-14/s and 2.5E-17/day are obtained. This scalable scheme is suitable for the applications of frequency dissemination with a star-topology, such as SKA and DSN.

On the evolution of rotating accreting white dwarfs and type Ia supernovae

The potential importance of the angular momentum which is gained by accreting white dwarfs (WDs) has been increasingly recognized in the context of type Ia supernova (SN Ia) single-degenerate model. The expectation that the spin of the WD can delay the explosion should help the single-degenerate model to be consistent with the observed properties of most SNe Ia, in particular by avoiding hydrogen contamination. In this article, we attempt to study the most prominent single-degenerate supersoft (WD + MS) channel when the rotation of accreting WDs is considered. We present a detailed binary population synthesis study to examine the predicted population of SNe Ia for this channel. For our standard model, we find that 77% of these SNe Ia explode with WD masses which are low enough to be supported by solid-body rotation (1.378-1.5Msun); this is a substantially higher proportion than found by previous work. Only 2% have WD explosion masses >2.0Msun; these require the initial WD mass to be larger than 1.0 Msun. We further discuss the possible origin of the diversity of SNe Ia from the pre- and post- accretion properties of the WDs in this population. We also suggest that some SN Ia progenitors with substantial circumstellar hydrogen, including some apparent type IIn SNe, might be related to WDs which required support from differential rotation to avoid explosion, since these can still be accreting from hydrogen-rich donors with a relatively high mass-transfer rate at the time of the SN explosion.

Gradient-based Laplacian Feature Selection

Analysis of high dimensional noisy data is of essence across a variety of research fields. Feature selection techniques are designed to find the relevant feature subset that can facilitate classification or pattern detection. Traditional (supervised) feature selection methods utilize label information to guide the identification of relevant feature subsets. In this paper, however, we consider the unsupervised feature selection problem. Without the label information, it is particularly difficult to identify a small set of relevant features due to the noisy nature of real-world data which corrupts the intrinsic structure of the data. Our Gradient-based Laplacian Feature Selection (GLFS) selects important features by minimizing the variance of the Laplacian regularized least squares regression model. With $\ell_1$ relaxation, GLFS can find a sparse subset of features that is relevant to the Laplacian manifolds. Extensive experiments on simulated, three real-world object recognition and two computational biology datasets, have illustrated the power and superior performance of our approach over multiple state-of-the-art unsupervised feature selection methods. Additionally, we show that GLFS selects a sparser set of more relevant features in a supervised setting outperforming the popular elastic net methodology.

Optical and Ultraviolet Observations of the Narrow-Lined Type Ia SN 2012fr in NGC 1365

Extensive optical and ultraviolet (UV) observations of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2012fr are presented in this paper. It has a relatively high luminosity, with an absolute $B$-band peak magnitude of about $-19.5$ mag and a smaller post-maximum decline rate than normal SNe Ia [e.g., $Δm _{15}$($B$) $= 0.85 \pm 0.05$ mag]. Based on the UV and optical light curves, we derived that a $^{56}$Ni mass of about 0.88 solar masses was synthesized in the explosion. The earlier spectra are characterized by noticeable high-velocity features of \ion{Si}{2} $λ$6355 and \ion{Ca}{2} with velocities in the range of $\sim22,000$--$25,000$ km s$^{-1}$. At around the maximum light, these spectral features are dominated by the photospheric components which are noticeably narrower than normal SNe Ia. The post-maximum velocity of the photosphere remains almost constant at $\sim$12,000 km s$^{-1}$ for about one month, reminiscent of the behavior of some luminous SNe Ia like SN 1991T. We propose that SN 2012fr may represent a subset of the SN 1991T-like SNe Ia viewed in a direction with a clumpy or shell-like structure of ejecta, in terms of a significant level of polarization reported in Maund et al. (2013).

Generalized Gaussian Process Regression Model for Non-Gaussian Functional Data

In this paper we propose a generalized Gaussian process concurrent regression model for functional data where the functional response variable has a binomial, Poisson or other non-Gaussian distribution from an exponential family while the covariates are mixed functional and scalar variables. The proposed model offers a nonparametric generalized concurrent regression method for functional data with multi-dimensional covariates, and provides a natural framework on modeling common mean structure and covariance structure simultaneously for repeatedly observed functional data. The mean structure provides an overall information about the observations, while the covariance structure can be used to catch up the characteristic of each individual batch. The prior specification of covariance kernel enables us to accommodate a wide class of nonlinear models. The definition of the model, the inference and the implementation as well as its asymptotic properties are discussed. Several numerical examples with different non-Gaussian response variables are presented. Some technical details and more numerical examples as well as an extension of the model are provided as supplementary materials.
