Angle of Arrival Estimation with Transformer: A Sparse and Gridless Method with Zero-Shot Capability

Automotive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radars have gained significant traction in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Vehicles (AV) due to their cost-effectiveness, resilience to challenging operating conditions, and extended detection range. To fully leverage the advantages of MIMO radars, it is crucial to develop an Angle of Arrival (AOA) algorithm that delivers high performance with reasonable computational workload. This work introduces AAETR (Angle of Arrival Estimation with TRansformer) for high performance gridless AOA estimation. Comprehensive evaluations across various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and multi-target scenarios demonstrate AAETR's superior performance compared to super resolution AOA algorithms such as Iterative Adaptive Approach (IAA). The proposed architecture features efficient, scalable, sparse and gridless angle-finding capability, overcoming the issues of high computational cost and straddling loss in SNR associated with grid-based IAA. AAETR requires fewer tunable hyper-parameters and is end-to-end trainable in a deep learning radar perception pipeline. When trained on large-scale simulated datasets then evaluated on real dataset, AAETR exhibits remarkable zero-shot sim-to-real transferability and emergent sidelobe suppression capability. This highlights the effectiveness of the proposed approach and its potential as a drop-in module in practical systems.

Universal Modelling of Oscillations in Fractional Quantum Hall Fluids

Density oscillations in quantum fluids can reveal their fundamental characteristic features. In this work, we study the density oscillation of incompressible fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids created by flux insertion. For the model Laughlin state, we find that the complex oscillations seen in various density profiles in real space can be universally captured by a simple damped oscillator model in the occupation-number space. It requires only two independent fitting parameters or characteristic length scales: the decay length and the oscillation wave number. Realistic Coulomb quasiholes can be viewed as Laughlin quasiholes dressed by magnetorotons, which can be modeled by a generalized damped oscillator model. Our work reveals the fundamental connections between the oscillations seen in various aspects of FQH fluids such as in the density of quasiholes, edge, and the pair correlation function. The presented model is useful for the study of quasihole sizes for their control and braiding in experiments and large-scale numerical computation of variational energies.

On the Equilibrium of a Class of Leader-Follower Games with Decision-Dependent Chance Constraints

In this paper, we study the existence of equilibrium in a single-leader-multiple-follower game with decision-dependent chance constraints (DDCCs), where decision-dependent uncertainties (DDUs) exist in the constraints of followers. DDUs refer to the uncertainties impacted by the leader's strategy, while the leader cannot capture their exact probability distributions. To address such problems, we first use decision-dependent ambiguity sets under moment information and Cantelli's inequality to transform DDCCs into second-order cone constraints. This simplifies the game model by eliminating the probability distributions. We further prove that there exists at least one equilibrium point for this game by applying Kakutani's fixed-point theorem. Finally, a numerical example is provided to show the impact of DDUs on the equilibrium of such game models.

OSN: Infinite Representations of Dynamic 3D Scenes from Monocular Videos

It has long been challenging to recover the underlying dynamic 3D scene representations from a monocular RGB video. Existing works formulate this problem into finding a single most plausible solution by adding various constraints such as depth priors and strong geometry constraints, ignoring the fact that there could be infinitely many 3D scene representations corresponding to a single dynamic video. In this paper, we aim to learn all plausible 3D scene configurations that match the input video, instead of just inferring a specific one. To achieve this ambitious goal, we introduce a new framework, called OSN. The key to our approach is a simple yet innovative object scale network together with a joint optimization module to learn an accurate scale range for every dynamic 3D object. This allows us to sample as many faithful 3D scene configurations as possible. Extensive experiments show that our method surpasses all baselines and achieves superior accuracy in dynamic novel view synthesis on multiple synthetic and real-world datasets. Most notably, our method demonstrates a clear advantage in learning fine-grained 3D scene geometry. Our code and data are available at https://github.com/vLAR-group/OSN

Reconfigurable Intelligent Computational Surfaces for MEC-Assisted Autonomous Driving Networks: Design Optimization and Analysis

This paper investigates autonomous driving safety improvement via task offloading from cellular vehicles (CVs) to a multi-access edge computing (MEC) server using vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) links. Considering that the latter links can be reused by vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications to improve spectrum utilization, the receiver of the V2I link may suffer from severe interference that can cause outages during the task offloading. To tackle this issue, we propose the deployment of a reconfigurable intelligent computational surface (RICS) whose computationally capable metamaterials are leveraged to jointly enable V2I reflective links as well as to implement interference cancellation at the V2V links. We devise a joint optimization formulation for the task offloading ratio between the CVs and the MEC server, the spectrum sharing strategy between V2V and V2I communications, as well as the RICS reflection and refraction matrices to maximize an autonomous driving safety task. Due to the non-convexity of the problem and the coupling among its free variables, we transform it into a more tractable equivalent form, which is then decomposed into three sub-problems solved via an alternate approximation method. Our simulation results showcase that the proposed RICS-assisted offloading framework significantly improves the safety of the considered autonomous driving network, yielding a nearly 34\% improvement in the safety coefficient of the CVs. In addition, it is demonstrated that the V2V data rate can be improved by around 60\% indicating that the RICS-induced adjustment of the signals can effectively mitigate interference at the V2V link.

Filtering Reconfigurable Intelligent Computational Surface for RF Spectrum Purification

The increasing demand for communication is degrading the electromagnetic (EM) transmission environment due to severe EM interference, significantly reducing the efficiency of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. Metasurfaces, a promising technology for controlling desired EM waves, have recently received significant attention from both academia and industry. However, the potential impact of out-of-band signals has been largely overlooked, leading to RF spectrum pollution and degradation of wireless transmissions. To address this issue, we propose a novel surface structure called the Filtering Reconfigurable Intelligent Computational Surface (FRICS). We introduce two types of FRICS structures: one that dynamically reflects resonance band signals through a tunable spatial filter while absorbing out-of-band signals using metamaterials and the other one that dynamically amplifies in-band signals using computational metamaterials while reflecting out-of-band signals. To evaluate the performance of FRICS, we implement it in device-to-device (D2D) communication and vehicular-to-everything (V2X) scenarios. The experiments demonstrate the superiority of FRICS in signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR) and energy efficiency (EE). Finally, we discuss the critical challenges faced and promising techniques for implementing FRICS in future wireless systems.

Observations of the Formation and Disappearance of a Funnel Prominence

We present an observational study of the formation and disappearance of a funnel prominence. Before the funnel prominence formed, cool materials from the top of a preexisting polar crown prominence flowed along saddle-shaped coronal loops to their base, forming a smaller prominence. Meanwhile, the saddle-shaped coronal loops gradually rose, and U-shaped coronal loops, termed prominence horns, began to appear along with a coronal cavity. Afterwards, a cool column emerged from the chromosphere, rose vertically into the corona, and then moved laterally to be transported into the U-shaped coronal loops. The formed prominence slid into the chromosphere, while the U-shaped coronal loops and the coronal cavity became more pronounced. As cool materials accumulated at the base of the U-shaped coronal loops, these loops underwent a significant descent and a V-shaped structure appeared at the base of the cool materials, indicating that the U-shaped coronal loops may be dragged down to sag. Subsequently, cool materials from the V-shaped structure continued to flow almost vertically toward the chromosphere, forming the funnel prominence. The vertical downflows might be produced by magnetic reconnection within or between the sagging field lines. Due to persistent vertical downflows, the U-shaped coronal loops were lifted up and prominence materials followed along inclined coronal loops towards the chromosphere, causing the funnel prominence to disappear. Our observations suggest that chromospheric plasma transported into a coronal cavity and then drained out via vertical downflows can form a funnel prominence.

AI-Empowered Multiple Access for 6G: A Survey of Spectrum Sensing, Protocol Designs, and Optimizations

With the rapidly increasing number of bandwidth-intensive terminals capable of intelligent computing and communication, such as smart devices equipped with shallow neural network models, the complexity of multiple access for these intelligent terminals is increasing due to the dynamic network environment and ubiquitous connectivity in 6G systems. Traditional multiple access (MA) design and optimization methods are gradually losing ground to artificial intelligence (AI) techniques that have proven their superiority in handling complexity. AI-empowered MA and its optimization strategies aimed at achieving high Quality-of-Service (QoS) are attracting more attention, especially in the area of latency-sensitive applications in 6G systems. In this work, we aim to: 1) present the development and comparative evaluation of AI-enabled MA; 2) provide a timely survey focusing on spectrum sensing, protocol design, and optimization for AI-empowered MA; and 3) explore the potential use cases of AI-empowered MA in the typical application scenarios within 6G systems. Specifically, we first present a unified framework of AI-empowered MA for 6G systems by incorporating various promising machine learning techniques in spectrum sensing, resource allocation, MA protocol design, and optimization. We then introduce AI-empowered MA spectrum sensing related to spectrum sharing and spectrum interference management. Next, we discuss the AI-empowered MA protocol designs and implementation methods by reviewing and comparing the state-of-the-art, and we further explore the optimization algorithms related to dynamic resource management, parameter adjustment, and access scheme switching. Finally, we discuss the current challenges, point out open issues, and outline potential future research directions in this field.

GPFedRec: Graph-guided Personalization for Federated Recommendation

The federated recommendation system is an emerging AI service architecture that provides recommendation services in a privacy-preserving manner. Using user-relation graphs to enhance federated recommendations is a promising topic. However, it is still an open challenge to construct the user-relation graph while preserving data locality-based privacy protection in federated settings. Inspired by a simple motivation, similar users share a similar vision (embeddings) to the same item set, this paper proposes a novel Graph-guided Personalization for Federated Recommendation (GPFedRec). The proposed method constructs a user-relation graph from user-specific personalized item embeddings at the server without accessing the users' interaction records. The personalized item embedding is locally fine-tuned on each device, and then a user-relation graph will be constructed by measuring the similarity among client-specific item embeddings. Without accessing users' historical interactions, we embody the data locality-based privacy protection of vanilla federated learning. Furthermore, a graph-guided aggregation mechanism is designed to leverage the user-relation graph and federated optimization framework simultaneously. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate GPFedRec's superior performance. The in-depth study validates that GPFedRec can generally improve existing federated recommendation methods as a plugin while keeping user privacy safe. Code is available to ease reproducibility

Quantum Error Suppression with Subgroup Stabilisation

Quantum state purification is the functionality that, given multiple copies of an unknown state, outputs a state with increased purity. This will be an essential building block for near- and middle-term quantum ecosystems before the availability of full fault tolerance, where one may want to suppress errors not only in expectation values but also in quantum states. We propose an effective state purification gadget with a moderate quantum overhead by projecting $M$ noisy quantum inputs to their symmetric subspace defined by a set of projectors forming a symmetric subgroup with order $M$. Our method, applied in every short evolution over $M$ redundant copies of noisy states, can suppress both coherent and stochastic errors by a factor of $1/M$, respectively. This reduces the circuit implementation cost $M$ times smaller than the state projection to the full symmetric subspace proposed by Barenco et al. more than two decades ago. We also show that our gadget purifies the depolarised inputs with probability $p$ to asymptotically $O\left(p^{2}\right)$ with an optimal choice of $M$ when $p$ is small. The sampling cost scales $O\left(p^{-1}\right)$ for small $p$, which is also shown to be asymptotically optimal. Our method provides flexible choices of state purification depending on the hardware restrictions before fully fault-tolerant computation is available.

Joint Association, Beamforming, and Resource Allocation for Multi-IRS Enabled MU-MISO Systems With RSMA

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) technologies are at the forefront of enhancing spectrum and energy efficiency in the next generation multi-antenna communication systems. This paper explores a RSMA system with multiple IRSs, and proposes two purpose-driven scheduling schemes, i.e., the exhaustive IRS-aided (EIA) and opportunistic IRS-aided (OIA) schemes. The aim is to optimize the system weighted energy efficiency (EE) under the above two schemes, respectively. Specifically, the Dinkelbach, branch and bound, successive convex approximation, and the semidefinite relaxation methods are exploited within the alternating optimization framework to obtain effective solutions to the considered problems. The numerical findings indicate that the EIA scheme exhibits better performance compared to the OIA scheme in diverse scenarios when considering the weighted EE, and the proposed algorithm demonstrates superior performance in comparison to the baseline algorithms.

In-Context Decision Transformer: Reinforcement Learning via Hierarchical Chain-of-Thought

In-context learning is a promising approach for offline reinforcement learning (RL) to handle online tasks, which can be achieved by providing task prompts. Recent works demonstrated that in-context RL could emerge with self-improvement in a trial-and-error manner when treating RL tasks as an across-episodic sequential prediction problem. Despite the self-improvement not requiring gradient updates, current works still suffer from high computational costs when the across-episodic sequence increases with task horizons. To this end, we propose an In-context Decision Transformer (IDT) to achieve self-improvement in a high-level trial-and-error manner. Specifically, IDT is inspired by the efficient hierarchical structure of human decision-making and thus reconstructs the sequence to consist of high-level decisions instead of low-level actions that interact with environments. As one high-level decision can guide multi-step low-level actions, IDT naturally avoids excessively long sequences and solves online tasks more efficiently. Experimental results show that IDT achieves state-of-the-art in long-horizon tasks over current in-context RL methods. In particular, the online evaluation time of our IDT is \textbf{36$\times$} times faster than baselines in the D4RL benchmark and \textbf{27$\times$} times faster in the Grid World benchmark.

Decision Mamba: Reinforcement Learning via Hybrid Selective Sequence Modeling

Recent works have shown the remarkable superiority of transformer models in reinforcement learning (RL), where the decision-making problem is formulated as sequential generation. Transformer-based agents could emerge with self-improvement in online environments by providing task contexts, such as multiple trajectories, called in-context RL. However, due to the quadratic computation complexity of attention in transformers, current in-context RL methods suffer from huge computational costs as the task horizon increases. In contrast, the Mamba model is renowned for its efficient ability to process long-term dependencies, which provides an opportunity for in-context RL to solve tasks that require long-term memory. To this end, we first implement Decision Mamba (DM) by replacing the backbone of Decision Transformer (DT). Then, we propose a Decision Mamba-Hybrid (DM-H) with the merits of transformers and Mamba in high-quality prediction and long-term memory. Specifically, DM-H first generates high-value sub-goals from long-term memory through the Mamba model. Then, we use sub-goals to prompt the transformer, establishing high-quality predictions. Experimental results demonstrate that DM-H achieves state-of-the-art in long and short-term tasks, such as D4RL, Grid World, and Tmaze benchmarks. Regarding efficiency, the online testing of DM-H in the long-term task is 28$\times$ times faster than the transformer-based baselines.

Quantifying Uncertainty in Classification Performance: ROC Confidence Bands Using Conformal Prediction

To evaluate a classification algorithm, it is common practice to plot the ROC curve using test data. However, the inherent randomness in the test data can undermine our confidence in the conclusions drawn from the ROC curve, necessitating uncertainty quantification. In this article, we propose an algorithm to construct confidence bands for the ROC curve, quantifying the uncertainty of classification on the test data in terms of sensitivity and specificity. The algorithm is based on a procedure called conformal prediction, which constructs individualized confidence intervals for the test set and the confidence bands for the ROC curve can be obtained by combining the individualized intervals together. Furthermore, we address both scenarios where the test data are either iid or non-iid relative to the observed data set and propose distinct algorithms for each case with valid coverage probability. The proposed method is validated through both theoretical results and numerical experiments.

Zero-shot sketch-based remote sensing image retrieval based on multi-level and attention-guided tokenization

Effectively and efficiently retrieving images from remote sensing databases is a critical challenge in the realm of remote sensing big data. Utilizing hand-drawn sketches as retrieval inputs offers intuitive and user-friendly advantages, yet the potential of multi-level feature integration from sketches remains underexplored, leading to suboptimal retrieval performance. To address this gap, our study introduces a novel zero-shot, sketch-based retrieval method for remote sensing images, leveraging multi-level feature extraction, self-attention-guided tokenization and filtering, and cross-modality attention update. This approach employs only vision information and does not require semantic knowledge concerning the sketch and image. It starts by employing multi-level self-attention guided feature extraction to tokenize the query sketches, as well as self-attention feature extraction to tokenize the candidate images. It then employs cross-attention mechanisms to establish token correspondence between these two modalities, facilitating the computation of sketch-to-image similarity. Our method significantly outperforms existing sketch-based remote sensing image retrieval techniques, as evidenced by tests on multiple datasets. Notably, it also exhibits robust zero-shot learning capabilities and strong generalizability in handling unseen categories and novel remote sensing data. The method's scalability can be further enhanced by the pre-calculation of retrieval tokens for all candidate images in a database. This research underscores the significant potential of multi-level, attention-guided tokenization in cross-modal remote sensing image retrieval. For broader accessibility and research facilitation, we have made the code and dataset used in this study publicly available online. Code and dataset are available at https://github.com/Snowstormfly/Cross-modal-retrieval-MLAGT.

Federated Adaptation for Foundation Model-based Recommendations

With the recent success of large language models, particularly foundation models with generalization abilities, applying foundation models for recommendations becomes a new paradigm to improve existing recommendation systems. It becomes a new open challenge to enable the foundation model to capture user preference changes in a timely manner with reasonable communication and computation costs while preserving privacy. This paper proposes a novel federated adaptation mechanism to enhance the foundation model-based recommendation system in a privacy-preserving manner. Specifically, each client will learn a lightweight personalized adapter using its private data. The adapter then collaborates with pre-trained foundation models to provide recommendation service efficiently with fine-grained manners. Importantly, users' private behavioral data remains secure as it is not shared with the server. This data localization-based privacy preservation is embodied via the federated learning framework. The model can ensure that shared knowledge is incorporated into all adapters while simultaneously preserving each user's personal preferences. Experimental results on four benchmark datasets demonstrate our method's superior performance. Implementation code is available to ease reproducibility.
