Seismic Traveltime Tomography with Label-free Learning

Deep learning techniques have been used to build velocity models (VMs) for seismic traveltime tomography and have shown encouraging performance in recent years. However, they need to generate labeled samples (i.e., pairs of input and label) to train the deep neural network (NN) with end-to-end learning, and the real labels for field data inversion are usually missing or very expensive. Some traditional tomographic methods can be implemented quickly, but their effectiveness is often limited by prior assumptions. To avoid generating and/or collecting labeled samples, we propose a novel method by integrating deep learning and dictionary learning to enhance the VMs with low resolution by using the traditional tomography-least square method (LSQR). We first design a type of shallow and simple NN to reduce computational cost followed by proposing a two-step strategy to enhance the VMs with low resolution: (1) Warming up. An initial dictionary is trained from the estimation by LSQR through dictionary learning method; (2) Dictionary optimization. The initial dictionary obtained in the warming-up step will be optimized by the NN, and then it will be used to reconstruct high-resolution VMs with the reference slowness and the estimation by LSQR. Furthermore, we design a loss function to minimize traveltime misfit to ensure that NN training is label-free, and the optimized dictionary can be obtained after each epoch of NN training. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method through the numerical tests on both synthetic and field data.

Light's Impact on Fertility: Unveiling the Maybe Connection Between Nighttime Illumination and Global Societal Changes

Chinese people are talking about a national birth rate of 6.4 per 1,000 people in 2023, the lowest in the world. Whether this is related to the wrong use of various artificial night light rays passing through our eyes is worth reflection. Non-visual effects of light are the effects of the blue component of light, which effectively inhibits the melatonin secretion in the pineal gland. As melatonin acts through high-affinity receptors located centrally and in all organs, blue light affects, in principle, the hormone secretion throughout the body, including the secretion of sex hormones and cortisol. These effects have been widely used in animal reproduction. Given that the night light environment has significantly changed over the past century, an effect of light on fertility and behavior could be detected in multiple cases. We showed that the ovulation phase of hens could be shifted by the light as low as 0.2 Lx, which corresponds to the illumination intensity at full moon, and the effect of 0.2 Lx on ovulation is normally far greater than all other factors combined. Two rounds of experiments and many other facts listed support that human intrinsic fertility may have not declined significantly, and food, chemical pollution and policy making are all not the main factors affecting fertility. The longer lighting time at night has brought modern humans into a radically different endocrine state compared with that of humans who lived 100 years ago, which has a huge impact on human reproduction, values and even the progress of civilization. With the development of the digital era, our eyes will be exposed to even longer light time at night. How to restore human beings to a normal hormonal state by combating the misuse of light may be the urgent issue. The light of the digital world (met averse, AI, and so on)may be should not continue to flood.

Layer-by-layer phase transformation in Ti$_3$O$_5$ revealed by machine learning molecular dynamics simulations

Reconstructive phase transitions involving breaking and reconstruction of primary chemical bonds are ubiquitous and important for many technological applications. In contrast to displacive phase transitions, the dynamics of reconstructive phase transitions are usually slow due to the large energy barrier. Nevertheless, the reconstructive phase transformation from $β$- to $λ$-Ti$_3$O$_5$ exhibits an ultrafast and reversible behavior. Despite extensive studies, the underlying microscopic mechanism remains unclear. Here, we discover a kinetically favorable in-plane nucleated layer-by-layer transformation mechanism through metadynamics and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. This is enabled by developing an efficient machine learning potential with near first-principles accuracy through an on-the-fly active learning method and an advanced sampling technique. Our results reveal that the $β$-$λ$ phase transformation initiates with the formation of two-dimensional nuclei in the $ab$-plane and then proceeds layer-by-layer through a multistep barrier-lowering kinetic process via intermediate metastable phases. Our work not only provides important insight into the ultrafast and reversible nature of the $β$-$λ$ transition, but also presents useful strategies and methods for tackling other complex structural phase transitions.

Rogue curves in the Davey-Stewartson I equation

We report new rogue wave patterns whose wave crests form closed or open curves in the spatial plane, which we call rogue curves, in the Davey-Stewartson I equation. These rogue curves come in various striking shapes, such as rings, double rings, and many others. They emerge from a uniform background (possibly with a few lumps on it), reach high amplitude in such striking shapes, and then disappear into the same background again. We reveal that these rogue curves would arise when an internal parameter in bilinear expressions of the rogue waves is real and large. Analytically, we show that these rogue curves are predicted by root curves of certain types of double-real-variable polynomials. We compare analytical predictions of rogue curves to true solutions and demonstrate good agreement between them.

Analysis and Experimental Validation of the WPT Efficiency of the Both-Sides Retrodirective System

The retrodirective antenna array is considered as a mechanism to enable target tracking of a power receiver for long range wireless power transfer (WPT) due to its simplicity in implementation using only analog circuits. By installing the retrodirective capability on both the generator and rectenna arrays, a feedback loop that produces a high efficiency WPT channel is created. In this paper, we characterize the dynamics of this phenomenon using a discrete-time state-space model based on S-parameters and show that the system can naturally achieve maximum theoretical WPT efficiency. We further confirmed the theoretical analysis through a hardware experiment using a 12-port circuit board with measurable S-parameters mimicking a static wireless channel. The results collected from the hardware experiment show agreement with the proposed theoretical framework by comparing the theoretical efficiency with the measured efficiency and by showing that the collected data points follow the predicted condition to achieve maximum efficiency.

Fine-Grained Prototypes Distillation for Few-Shot Object Detection

Few-shot object detection (FSOD) aims at extending a generic detector for novel object detection with only a few training examples. It attracts great concerns recently due to the practical meanings. Meta-learning has been demonstrated to be an effective paradigm for this task. In general, methods based on meta-learning employ an additional support branch to encode novel examples (a.k.a. support images) into class prototypes, which are then fused with query branch to facilitate the model prediction. However, the class-level prototypes are difficult to precisely generate, and they also lack detailed information, leading to instability in performance.New methods are required to capture the distinctive local context for more robust novel object detection. To this end, we propose to distill the most representative support features into fine-grained prototypes. These prototypes are then assigned into query feature maps based on the matching results, modeling the detailed feature relations between two branches. This process is realized by our Fine-Grained Feature Aggregation (FFA) module. Moreover, in terms of high-level feature fusion, we propose Balanced Class-Agnostic Sampling (B-CAS) strategy and Non-Linear Fusion (NLF) module from differenct perspectives. They are complementary to each other and depict the high-level feature relations more effectively. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC and MS COCO benchmarks show that our method sets a new state-of-the-art performance in most settings. Chiral Spin Liquid on a Shastry-Sutherland Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We demonstrate the existence of a topological chiral spin liquid in the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland Heisenberg model with an additional spin chirality interaction, using numerically unbiased exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. We establish a quantum phase diagram where conventional phases, including dimer singlet, plaquette singlet, N{\' e}el and collinear phase, can be clearly identified by suitable local order parameters. Among them a $SU(2)_1$ chiral spin liquid emerges in the highly frustrated region, which is unambiguously identified by two topologically degenerate ground states, modular matrix, and characteristic level counting in entanglement spectrum, featuring the same topological order of $ν=1/2$ bosonic Laughlin state. The phase boundaries among the different orders are determined by the energy level crossing analysis and wave function fidelity susceptibility.

Troublemaker Learning for Low-Light Image Enhancement

Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) restores the color and brightness of underexposed images. Supervised methods suffer from high costs in collecting low/normal-light image pairs. Unsupervised methods invest substantial effort in crafting complex loss functions. We address these two challenges through the proposed TroubleMaker Learning (TML) strategy, which employs normal-light images as inputs for training. TML is simple: we first dim the input and then increase its brightness. TML is based on two core components. First, the troublemaker model (TM) constructs pseudo low-light images from normal images to relieve the cost of pairwise data. Second, the predicting model (PM) enhances the brightness of pseudo low-light images. Additionally, we incorporate an enhancing model (EM) to further improve the visual performance of PM outputs. Moreover, in LLIE tasks, characterizing global element correlations is important because more information on the same object can be captured. CNN cannot achieve this well, and self-attention has high time complexity. Accordingly, we propose Global Dynamic Convolution (GDC) with O(n) time complexity, which essentially imitates the partial calculation process of self-attention to formulate elementwise correlations. Based on the GDC module, we build the UGDC model. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate that UGDC trained with TML can achieve competitive performance against state-of-the-art approaches on public datasets. The code is available at https://github.com/Rainbowman0/TML_LLIE.

EFLNet: Enhancing Feature Learning for Infrared Small Target Detection

Single-frame infrared small target detection is considered to be a challenging task, due to the extreme imbalance between target and background, bounding box regression is extremely sensitive to infrared small target, and target information is easy to lose in the high-level semantic layer. In this article, we propose an enhancing feature learning network (EFLNet) to address these problems. First, we notice that there is an extremely imbalance between the target and the background in the infrared image, which makes the model pay more attention to the background features rather than target features. To address this problem, we propose a new adaptive threshold focal loss (ATFL) function that decouples the target and the background, and utilizes the adaptive mechanism to adjust the loss weight to force the model to allocate more attention to target features. Second, we introduce the normalized Gaussian Wasserstein distance (NWD) to alleviate the difficulty of convergence caused by the extreme sensitivity of the bounding box regression to infrared small target. Finally, we incorporate a dynamic head mechanism into the network to enable adaptive learning of the relative importance of each semantic layer. Experimental results demonstrate our method can achieve better performance in the detection performance of infrared small target compared to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) deep-learning-based methods. The source codes and bounding box annotated datasets are available at https://github.com/YangBo0411/infrared-small-target.

When Federated Recommendation Meets Cold-Start Problem: Separating Item Attributes and User Interactions

Federated recommendation system usually trains a global model on the server without direct access to users' private data on their own devices. However, this separation of the recommendation model and users' private data poses a challenge in providing quality service, particularly when it comes to new items, namely cold-start recommendations in federated settings. This paper introduces a novel method called Item-aligned Federated Aggregation (IFedRec) to address this challenge. It is the first research work in federated recommendation to specifically study the cold-start scenario. The proposed method learns two sets of item representations by leveraging item attributes and interaction records simultaneously. Additionally, an item representation alignment mechanism is designed to align two item representations and learn the meta attribute network at the server within a federated learning framework. Experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate IFedRec's superior performance for cold-start scenarios. Furthermore, we also verify IFedRec owns good robustness when the system faces limited client participation and noise injection, which brings promising practical application potential in privacy-protection enhanced federated recommendation systems. Scalable Volt-VAR Optimization using RLlib-IMPALA Framework: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

In the rapidly evolving domain of electrical power systems, the Volt-VAR optimization (VVO) is increasingly critical, especially with the burgeoning integration of renewable energy sources. Traditional approaches to learning-based VVO in expansive and dynamically changing power systems are often hindered by computational complexities. To address this challenge, our research presents a novel framework that harnesses the potential of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), specifically utilizing the Importance Weighted Actor-Learner Architecture (IMPALA) algorithm, executed on the RAY platform. This framework, built upon RLlib-an industry-standard in Reinforcement Learning-ingeniously capitalizes on the distributed computing capabilities and advanced hyperparameter tuning offered by RAY. This design significantly expedites the exploration and exploitation phases in the VVO solution space. Our empirical results demonstrate that our approach not only surpasses existing DRL methods in achieving superior reward outcomes but also manifests a remarkable tenfold reduction in computational requirements. The integration of our DRL agent with the RAY platform facilitates the creation of RLlib-IMPALA, a novel framework that efficiently uses RAY's resources to improve system adaptability and control. RLlib-IMPALA leverages RAY's toolkit to enhance analytical capabilities and significantly speeds up training to become more than 10 times faster than other state-of-the-art DRL methods.

Computation Offloading for Multi-server Multi-access Edge Vehicular Networks: A DDQN-based Method

In this paper, we investigate a multi-user offloading problem in the overlapping domain of a multi-server mobile edge computing system. We divide the original problem into two stages: the offloading decision making stage and the request scheduling stage. To prevent the terminal from going out of service area during offloading, we consider the mobility parameter of the terminal according to the human behaviour model when making the offloading decision, and then introduce a server evaluation mechanism based on both the mobility parameter and the server load to select the optimal offloading server. In order to fully utilise the server resources, we design a double deep Q-network (DDQN)-based reward evaluation algorithm that considers the priority of tasks when scheduling offload requests. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to verify that our proposed method outperforms traditional mathematical computation methods as well as the DQN algorithm.

Two-sided Loop Solar Jet Driven by the Eruption of a Small Filament in a Big Filament Channel

Similar to the cases of anemone jets, two-sided loop solar jets could also be produced by either flux emergence from the solar interior or small scale filament eruptions. Using the high-quality data from the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO), we analyzed a two-sided loop solar jet triggered by the eruption of a small filament in this paper. The jet was occurred in a pre-existing big filament channel. The detailed processes involved in the small filament eruption, the interaction between the erupted filament and the big filament channel, and the launch of the two-sided loop jet are presented. The observations further revealed notable asymmetry between the two branches of the jet spire, with the northeastern branch is narrow and short, while the southern branch is wide and long and accompanied by discernible untwisting motions. We explored the unique appearance of the jet by employing the local potential field extrapolation to calculate the coronal magnetic field configuration around the jet. The photospheric magnetic flux below the small filament underwent cancellation for approximately 7 hours before the filament eruption, and the negative flux near the southern foot-point of the filament decreased by about 56 percent during this interval. Therefore, we proposed that the primary photospheric driver of the filament eruption and the associated two-sided loop jet in this event is flux cancellation rather than flux emergence.

An Accelerated Proximal Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers for Optimal Decentralized Control of Uncertain Systems

To ensure the system stability of the $\bf{\mathcal{H}_{2}}$-guaranteed cost optimal decentralized control problem (ODC), an approximate semidefinite programming (SDP) problem is formulated based on the sparsity of the gain matrix of the decentralized controller. To reduce data storage and improve computational efficiency, the SDP problem is vectorized into a conic programming (CP) problem using the Kronecker product. Then, a proximal alternating direction method of multipliers (PADMM) is proposed to solve the dual of the resulted CP. By linking the (generalized) PADMM with the (relaxed) proximal point algorithm, we are able to accelerate the proposed PADMM via the Halpern fixed-point iterative scheme. This results in a fast convergence rate for the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) residual along the sequence generated by the accelerated algorithm. Numerical experiments further demonstrate that the accelerated PADMM outperforms both the well-known CVXOPT and SCS algorithms for solving the large-scale CP problems arising from $\bf{\mathcal{H}_{2}}$-guaranteed cost ODC problems.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Computational Surfaces for MEC-Assisted Autonomous Driving Networks

In this paper, we focus on improving autonomous driving safety via task offloading from cellular vehicles (CVs), using vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) links, to an multi-access edge computing (MEC) server. Considering that the frequencies used for V2I links can be reused for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications to improve spectrum utilization, the receiver of each V2I link may suffer from severe interference, causing outages in the task offloading process. To tackle this issue, we propose the deployment of a reconfigurable intelligent computational surface (RICS) to enable, not only V2I reflective links, but also interference cancellation at the V2V links exploiting the computational capability of its metamaterials. We devise a joint optimization formulation for the task offloading ratio between the CVs and the MEC server, the spectrum sharing strategy between V2V and V2I communications, as well as the RICS reflection and refraction matrices, with the objective to maximize a safety-based autonomous driving task. Due to the non-convexity of the problem and the coupling among its free variables, we transform it into a more tractable equivalent form, which is then decomposed into three sub-problems and solved via an alternate approximation method. Our simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed RICS optimization in improving the safety in autonomous driving networks.

ADA-GNN: Atom-Distance-Angle Graph Neural Network for Crystal Material Property Prediction

Property prediction is a fundamental task in crystal material research. To model atoms and structures, structures represented as graphs are widely used and graph learning-based methods have achieved significant progress. Bond angles and bond distances are two key structural information that greatly influence crystal properties. However, most of the existing works only consider bond distances and overlook bond angles. The main challenge lies in the time cost of handling bond angles, which leads to a significant increase in inference time. To solve this issue, we first propose a crystal structure modeling based on dual scale neighbor partitioning mechanism, which uses a larger scale cutoff for edge neighbors and a smaller scale cutoff for angle neighbors. Then, we propose a novel Atom-Distance-Angle Graph Neural Network (ADA-GNN) for property prediction tasks, which can process node information and structural information separately. The accuracy of predictions and inference time are improved with the dual scale modeling and the specially designed architecture of ADA-GNN. The experimental results validate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art results in two large-scale material benchmark datasets on property prediction tasks.

Exploring Adversarial Robustness of LiDAR-Camera Fusion Model in Autonomous Driving

Our study assesses the adversarial robustness of LiDAR-camera fusion models in 3D object detection. We introduce an attack technique that, by simply adding a limited number of physically constrained adversarial points above a car, can make the car undetectable by the fusion model. Experimental results reveal that even without changes to the image data channel, the fusion model can be deceived solely by manipulating the LiDAR data channel. This finding raises safety concerns in the field of autonomous driving. Further, we explore how the quantity of adversarial points, the distance between the front-near car and the LiDAR-equipped car, and various angular factors affect the attack success rate. We believe our research can contribute to the understanding of multi-sensor robustness, offering insights and guidance to enhance the safety of autonomous driving.
