SLP-Net:An efficient lightweight network for segmentation of skin lesions

Prompt treatment for melanoma is crucial. To assist physicians in identifying lesion areas precisely in a quick manner, we propose a novel skin lesion segmentation technique namely SLP-Net, an ultra-lightweight segmentation network based on the spiking neural P(SNP) systems type mechanism. Most existing convolutional neural networks achieve high segmentation accuracy while neglecting the high hardware cost. SLP-Net, on the contrary, has a very small number of parameters and a high computation speed. We design a lightweight multi-scale feature extractor without the usual encoder-decoder structure. Rather than a decoder, a feature adaptation module is designed to replace it and implement multi-scale information decoding. Experiments at the ISIC2018 challenge demonstrate that the proposed model has the highest Acc and DSC among the state-of-the-art methods, while experiments on the PH2 dataset also demonstrate a favorable generalization ability. Finally, we compare the computational complexity as well as the computational speed of the models in experiments, where SLP-Net has the highest overall superiority

Multi-stages attention Breast cancer classification based on nonlinear spiking neural P neurons with autapses

Breast cancer(BC) is a prevalent type of malignant tumor in women. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital for enhancing the patients' survival rate. Downsampling in deep networks may lead to loss of information, so for compensating the detail and edge information and allowing convolutional neural networks to pay more attention to seek the lesion region, we propose a multi-stages attention architecture based on NSNP neurons with autapses. First, unlike the single-scale attention acquisition methods of existing methods, we set up spatial attention acquisition at each feature map scale of the convolutional network to obtain an fusion global information on attention guidance. Then we introduce a new type of NSNP variants called NSNP neurons with autapses. Specifically, NSNP systems are modularized as feature encoders, recoding the features extracted from convolutional neural network as well as the fusion of attention information and preserve the key characteristic elements in feature maps. This ensures the retention of valuable data while gradually transforming high-dimensional complicated info into low-dimensional ones. The proposed method is evaluated on the public dataset BreakHis at various magnifications and classification tasks. It achieves a classification accuracy of 96.32% at all magnification cases, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. Ablation studies are also performed, verifying the proposed model's efficacy. The source code is available at XhuBobYoung/Breast-cancer-Classification.

Learning Generalizable Agents via Saliency-Guided Features Decorrelation

In visual-based Reinforcement Learning (RL), agents often struggle to generalize well to environmental variations in the state space that were not observed during training. The variations can arise in both task-irrelevant features, such as background noise, and task-relevant features, such as robot configurations, that are related to the optimal decisions. To achieve generalization in both situations, agents are required to accurately understand the impact of changed features on the decisions, i.e., establishing the true associations between changed features and decisions in the policy model. However, due to the inherent correlations among features in the state space, the associations between features and decisions become entangled, making it difficult for the policy to distinguish them. To this end, we propose Saliency-Guided Features Decorrelation (SGFD) to eliminate these correlations through sample reweighting. Concretely, SGFD consists of two core techniques: Random Fourier Functions (RFF) and the saliency map. RFF is utilized to estimate the complex non-linear correlations in high-dimensional images, while the saliency map is designed to identify the changed features. Under the guidance of the saliency map, SGFD employs sample reweighting to minimize the estimated correlations related to changed features, thereby achieving decorrelation in visual RL tasks. Our experimental results demonstrate that SGFD can generalize well on a wide range of test environments and significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in handling both task-irrelevant variations and task-relevant variations.

Joint Trading and Scheduling among Coupled Carbon-Electricity-Heat-Gas Industrial Clusters

This paper presents a carbon-energy coupling management framework for an industrial park, where the carbon flow model accompanying multi-energy flows is adopted to track and suppress carbon emissions on the user side. To deal with the quadratic constraint of gas flows, a bound tightening algorithm for constraints relaxation is adopted. The synergies among the carbon capture, energy storage, power-to-gas further consume renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. Aiming at carbon emissions disparities and supply-demand imbalances, this paper proposes a carbon trading ladder reward and punishment mechanism and an energy trading and scheduling method based on Lyapunov optimization and matching game to maximize the long-term benefits of each industrial cluster without knowing the prior information of random variables. Case studies show that our proposed trading method can reduce overall costs and carbon emissions while relieving energy pressure, which is important for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).

RayDF: Neural Ray-surface Distance Fields with Multi-view Consistency

In this paper, we study the problem of continuous 3D shape representations. The majority of existing successful methods are coordinate-based implicit neural representations. However, they are inefficient to render novel views or recover explicit surface points. A few works start to formulate 3D shapes as ray-based neural functions, but the learned structures are inferior due to the lack of multi-view geometry consistency. To tackle these challenges, we propose a new framework called RayDF. It consists of three major components: 1) the simple ray-surface distance field, 2) the novel dual-ray visibility classifier, and 3) a multi-view consistency optimization module to drive the learned ray-surface distances to be multi-view geometry consistent. We extensively evaluate our method on three public datasets, demonstrating remarkable performance in 3D surface point reconstruction on both synthetic and challenging real-world 3D scenes, clearly surpassing existing coordinate-based and ray-based baselines. Most notably, our method achieves a 1000x faster speed than coordinate-based methods to render an 800x800 depth image, showing the superiority of our method for 3D shape representation. Our code and data are available at https://github.com/vLAR-group/RayDF

ADCNet: Learning from Raw Radar Data via Distillation

As autonomous vehicles and advanced driving assistance systems have entered wider deployment, there is an increased interest in building robust perception systems using radars. Radar-based systems are lower cost and more robust to adverse weather conditions than their LiDAR-based counterparts; however the point clouds produced are typically noisy and sparse by comparison. In order to combat these challenges, recent research has focused on consuming the raw radar data, instead of the final radar point cloud. We build on this line of work and demonstrate that by bringing elements of the signal processing pipeline into our network and then pre-training on the signal processing task, we are able to achieve state of the art detection performance on the RADIal dataset. Our method uses expensive offline signal processing algorithms to pseudo-label data and trains a network to distill this information into a fast convolutional backbone, which can then be finetuned for perception tasks. Extensive experiment results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

NVFi: Neural Velocity Fields for 3D Physics Learning from Dynamic Videos

In this paper, we aim to model 3D scene dynamics from multi-view videos. Unlike the majority of existing works which usually focus on the common task of novel view synthesis within the training time period, we propose to simultaneously learn the geometry, appearance, and physical velocity of 3D scenes only from video frames, such that multiple desirable applications can be supported, including future frame extrapolation, unsupervised 3D semantic scene decomposition, and dynamic motion transfer. Our method consists of three major components, 1) the keyframe dynamic radiance field, 2) the interframe velocity field, and 3) a joint keyframe and interframe optimization module which is the core of our framework to effectively train both networks. To validate our method, we further introduce two dynamic 3D datasets: 1) Dynamic Object dataset, and 2) Dynamic Indoor Scene dataset. We conduct extensive experiments on multiple datasets, demonstrating the superior performance of our method over all baselines, particularly in the critical tasks of future frame extrapolation and unsupervised 3D semantic scene decomposition.

Benchmarking and Analysis of Unsupervised Object Segmentation from Real-world Single Images

In this paper, we study the problem of unsupervised object segmentation from single images. We do not introduce a new algorithm, but systematically investigate the effectiveness of existing unsupervised models on challenging real-world images. We first introduce seven complexity factors to quantitatively measure the distributions of background and foreground object biases in appearance and geometry for datasets with human annotations. With the aid of these factors, we empirically find that, not surprisingly, existing unsupervised models fail to segment generic objects in real-world images, although they can easily achieve excellent performance on numerous simple synthetic datasets, due to the vast gap in objectness biases between synthetic and real images. By conducting extensive experiments on multiple groups of ablated real-world datasets, we ultimately find that the key factors underlying the failure of existing unsupervised models on real-world images are the challenging distributions of background and foreground object biases in appearance and geometry. Because of this, the inductive biases introduced in existing unsupervised models can hardly capture the diverse object distributions. Our research results suggest that future work should exploit more explicit objectness biases in the network design.

A complete family of Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for convex capillary hypersurfaces in the half-space

In this paper, we study the locally constrained inverse curvature flow for hypersurfaces in the half-space with $θ$-capillary boundary, which was recently introduced by Wang-Weng-Xia. Assume that the initial hypersurface is strictly convex with the contact angle $θ\in (0,π/2]$. We prove that the solution of the flow remains to be strictly convex for $t>0$, exists for all positive time and converges smoothly to a spherical cap. As an application, we prove a complete family of Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for convex capillary hypersurfaces in the half-space with the contact angle $θ\in(0,π/2]$. Along the proof, we develop a new tensor maximum principle for parabolic equations on compact manifold with proper Neumann boundary condition.

A multi-layer refined network model for the identification of essential proteins

The identification of essential proteins in protein-protein interaction networks (PINs) can help to discover drug targets and prevent disease. In order to improve the accuracy of the identification of essential proteins, researchers attempted to obtain a refined PIN by combining multiple biological information to filter out some unreliable interactions in the PIN. Unfortunately, such approaches drastically reduce the number of nodes in the PIN after multiple refinements and result in a sparser PIN. It makes a considerable portion of essential proteins unidentifiable. In this paper, we propose a multi-layer refined network (MR-PIN) that addresses this problem. Firstly, four refined networks are constructed by respectively integrating different biological information into the static PIN to form a multi-layer heterogeneous network. Then scores of proteins in each network layer are calculated by the existing node ranking method, and the importance score of a protein in the MR-PIN is evaluated in terms of the geometric mean of its scores in all layers. Finally, all nodes are sorted by their importance scores to determine their essentiality. To evaluate the effectiveness of the multi-layer refined network model, we apply 16 node ranking methods on the MR-PIN, and compare the results with those on the SPIN, DPIN and RDPIN. Then the predictive performances of these ranking methods are validated in terms of the identification number of essential protein at top100 - top600, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, F-measure, accuracy, Jackknife, ROCAUC and PRAUC. The experimental results show that the MR-PIN is superior to the existing refined PINs in the identification accuracy of essential proteins.

PerCNet: Periodic Complete Representation for Crystal Graphs

Crystal material representation is the foundation of crystal material research. Existing works consider crystal molecules as graph data with different representation methods and leverage the advantages of techniques in graph learning. A reasonable crystal representation method should capture the local and global information. However, existing methods only consider the local information of crystal molecules by modeling the bond distance and bond angle of first-order neighbors of atoms, which leads to the issue that different crystals will have the same representation. To solve this many-to-one issue, we consider the global information by further considering dihedral angles, which can guarantee that the proposed representation corresponds one-to-one with the crystal material. We first propose a periodic complete representation and calculation algorithm for infinite extended crystal materials. A theoretical proof for the representation that satisfies the periodic completeness is provided. Based on the proposed representation, we then propose a network for predicting crystal material properties, PerCNet, with a specially designed message passing mechanism. Extensive experiments are conducted on two real-world material benchmark datasets. The PerCNet achieves the best performance among baseline methods in terms of MAE. In addition, our results demonstrate the importance of the periodic scheme and completeness for crystal representation learning.

A protein network refinement method based on module discovery and biological information

The identification of essential proteins can help in understanding the minimum requirements for cell survival and development. Network-based centrality approaches are commonly used to identify essential proteins from protein-protein interaction networks (PINs). Unfortunately, these approaches are limited by the poor quality of the underlying PIN data. To overcome this problem, researchers have focused on the prediction of essential proteins by combining PINs with other biological data. In this paper, we proposed a network refinement method based on module discovery and biological information to obtain a higher quality PIN. First, to extract the maximal connected subgraph in the PIN and to divide it into different modules by using Fast-unfolding algorithm; then, to detect critical modules based on the homology information, subcellular localization information and topology information within each module, and to construct a more refined network (CM-PIN). To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we used 10 typical network-based centrality methods (LAC, DC, DMNC, NC, TP, LID, CC, BC, PR, LR) to compare the overall performance of the CM-PIN with those the refined dynamic protein network (RD-PIN). The experimental results showed that the CM-PIN was optimal in terms of precision-recall curve, jackknife curve and other criteria, and can help to identify essential proteins more accurately.

The weighted geometric inequalities for static convex domains in static rotationally symmetric spaces

We consider a locally constrained curvature flow in a static rotationally symmetric space $\mathbf{N}^{n+1}$, which was firstly introduced by Hu and Li in the hyperbolic space. We prove that if the initial hypersurface is graphical, then the smooth solution of the flow remains to be graphical, exists for all positive time $t\in[0,\infty)$ and converges to a slice of $\mathbf{N}^{n+1}$ exponentially in the smooth topology. Moreover, we prove that the flow preserves static convexity if the initial hypersurface is close to a slice of $\mathbf{N}^{n+1}$ in the $C^1$ sense. As applications, we prove a family of weighted geometric inequalities for static convex domains which is close to a slice of $\mathbf{N}^{n+1}$ in the $C^1$ sense.

Path-dependent correlations in dynamically tuned Ising models and its short-time behavior: application of Magnus expansion

We study the buildup of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlation in the dynamically tuned Ising models which are realized by the Rydberg atomic system. In short-time scale, we apply Magnus expansion (ME) to derive the high-order analytic expression of the connected correlation functions and compare it with exactly numerical results for the different lattice geometries, e.g., 1D chain, $2 \times n$ lattice, and $n \times n$ lattice. It is shown that the high-order expansion is required to describe accurately the buildup of AF correlation in the quench dynamics. Moreover, through a 2D square lattice, we find that the magnitude of AF correlation for the same Manhattan distance is proportional to the number of the shortest paths in a sufficiently long time until long and distinct paths are involved significantly with the buildup of the correlation. Finally, we propose an applicable experimental setup to realize our findings.

Learning Continuous Network Emerging Dynamics from Scarce Observations via Data-Adaptive Stochastic Processes

Learning network dynamics from the empirical structure and spatio-temporal observation data is crucial to revealing the interaction mechanisms of complex networks in a wide range of domains. However, most existing methods only aim at learning network dynamic behaviors generated by a specific ordinary differential equation instance, resulting in ineffectiveness for new ones, and generally require dense observations. The observed data, especially from network emerging dynamics, are usually difficult to obtain, which brings trouble to model learning. Therefore, how to learn accurate network dynamics with sparse, irregularly-sampled, partial, and noisy observations remains a fundamental challenge. We introduce Neural ODE Processes for Network Dynamics (NDP4ND), a new class of stochastic processes governed by stochastic data-adaptive network dynamics, to overcome the challenge and learn continuous network dynamics from scarce observations. Intensive experiments conducted on various network dynamics in ecological population evolution, phototaxis movement, brain activity, epidemic spreading, and real-world empirical systems, demonstrate that the proposed method has excellent data adaptability and computational efficiency, and can adapt to unseen network emerging dynamics, producing accurate interpolation and extrapolation with reducing the ratio of required observation data to only about 6\% and improving the learning speed for new dynamics by three orders of magnitude.

Multi-scale Context-aware Network with Transformer for Gait Recognition

Although gait recognition has drawn increasing research attention recently, since the silhouette differences are quite subtle in spatial domain, temporal feature representation is crucial for gait recognition. Inspired by the observation that humans can distinguish gaits of different subjects by adaptively focusing on clips of varying time scales, we propose a multi-scale context-aware network with transformer (MCAT) for gait recognition. MCAT generates temporal features across three scales, and adaptively aggregates them using contextual information from both local and global perspectives. Specifically, MCAT contains an adaptive temporal aggregation (ATA) module that performs local relation modeling followed by global relation modeling to fuse the multi-scale features. Besides, in order to remedy the spatial feature corruption resulting from temporal operations, MCAT incorporates a salient spatial feature learning (SSFL) module to select groups of discriminative spatial features. Extensive experiments conducted on three datasets demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance. Concretely, we achieve rank-1 accuracies of 98.7%, 96.2% and 88.7% under normal walking, bag-carrying and coat-wearing conditions on CASIA-B, 97.5% on OU-MVLP and 50.6% on GREW. The source code will be available at https://github.com/zhuduowang/MCAT.git.

Massive Access of Static and Mobile Users via Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Protocol Design and Performance Analysis

The envisioned wireless networks of the future entail the provisioning of massive numbers of connections, heterogeneous data traffic, ultra-high spectral efficiency, and low latency services. This vision is spurring research activities focused on defining a next generation multiple access (NGMA) protocol that can accommodate massive numbers of users in different resource blocks, thereby, achieving higher spectral efficiency and increased connectivity compared to conventional multiple access schemes. In this article, we present a multiple access scheme for NGMA in wireless communication systems assisted by multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this regard, considering the practical scenario of static users operating together with mobile ones, we first study the interplay of the design of NGMA schemes and RIS phase configuration in terms of efficiency and complexity. Based on this, we then propose a multiple access framework for RIS-assisted communication systems, and we also design a medium access control (MAC) protocol incorporating RISs. In addition, we give a detailed performance analysis of the designed RIS-assisted MAC protocol. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MAC design outperforms the benchmarks in terms of system throughput and access fairness, and also reveal a trade-off relationship between the system throughput and fairness.

Rogue wave patterns associated with Adler-Moser polynomials in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We report new rogue wave patterns in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. These patterns include heart-shaped structures, fan-shaped sectors, and many others, that are formed by individual Peregrine waves. They appear when multiple internal parameters in the rogue wave solutions get large. Analytically, we show that these new patterns are described asymptotically by root structures of Adler-Moser polynomials through a dilation. Since Adler-Moser polynomials are generalizations of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomial hierarchy and contain free complex parameters, these new rogue patterns associated with Adler-Moser polynomials are much more diverse than previous rogue patterns associated with the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomial hierarchy. We also compare analytical predictions of these patterns to true solutions and demonstrate good agreement between them.
