Nucleon strangeness polarization from $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperon production in polarized proton-proton collision at RHIC

We calculate the inclusive production of a polarized $Λ$ or $\barΛ$ hyperon from the single longitudinally polarized proton and proton ($pp$) collision at RHIC. By comparing the data reported by the STAR Collaboration, we find that this process is sensitive to the polarization of strange and antistrange quarks of the proton in the experimental range. By introducing asymmetric coefficients with the minimization of $χ^2$, we further identify the asymmetry of the polarized strange-antistrange quarks in the proton sea and find that the first moment is $Δs \approx -0.025\pm 0.019$ for strange quark and $Δ\bar s \approx -0.001\pm 0.012$ for antistrange quark, with central values agreeing with the light-cone meson-baryon fluctuation model prediction, the recent lattice QCD determination of strangeness polarization and results from a global QCD analysis given by the Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum (JAM) Collaboration.

First digit law from Laplace transform

The occurrence of digits 1 through 9 as the leftmost nonzero digit of numbers from real-world sources is distributed unevenly according to an empirical law, known as Benford's law or the first digit law. It remains obscure why a variety of data sets generated from quite different dynamics obey this particular law. We perform a study of Benford's law from the application of the Laplace transform, and find that the logarithmic Laplace spectrum of the digital indicator function can be approximately taken as a constant. This particular constant, being exactly the Benford term, explains the prevalence of Benford's law. The slight variation from the Benford term leads to deviations from Benford's law for distributions which oscillate violently in the inverse Laplace space. We prove that the whole family of completely monotonic distributions can satisfy Benford's law within a small bound. Our study suggests that Benford's law originates from the way that we write numbers, thus should be taken as a basic mathematical knowledge.

Testing Lorentz invariance and CPT symmetry using gamma-ray burst neutrinos

A recent work [Y. Huang and B.-Q. Ma, Commun. Phys. {\bf 1}, 62 (2018)] associated all four PeV neutrinos observed by IceCube to gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and revealed a regularity which indicates a Lorentz violation scale $E_{\rm LV}=(6.5\pm0.4)\times10^{17}$ GeV with opposite sign factors $s=\pm 1$ between neutrinos and antineutrinos. The association of "time delay" and "time advance" events with neutrinos and antineutrinos (or vice versa) is only a hypothesis since the IceCube detector cannot tell the chirality of the neutrinos, and further experimental tests are needed to verify this hypothesis. We derive the values of the CPT-odd Lorentz violating parameters in the standard-model extension (SME) framework, and perform a threshold analysis on the electron-positron pair emission of the superluminal neutrinos (or antineutrinos). We find that different neutrino/antineutrino propagation properties, suggested by Y. Huang and B.-Q. Ma, can be described in the SME framework with both Lorentz invariance and CPT symmetry violation, but with a threshold energy constraint. A viable way on testing the CPT symmetry violation between neutrinos and antineutrinos is suggested.

Nonperturbative strange-quark sea from lattice QCD, light-front holography, and meson-baryon fluctuation models

We demonstrate that a nonzero strangeness contribution to the spacelike electromagnetic form factor of the nucleon is evidence for a strange-antistrange asymmetry in the nucleon's light-front wave function, thus implying different nonperturbative contributions to the strange and antistrange quark distribution functions. A recent lattice QCD calculation of the nucleon strange quark form factor predicts that the strange quark distribution is more centralized in coordinate space than the antistrange quark distribution, and thus the strange quark distribution is more spread out in light-front momentum space. We show that the lattice prediction implies that the difference between the strange and antistrange parton distribution functions, $s(x)-\bar{s}(x)$, is negative at small-$x$ and positive at large-$x$. We also evaluate the strange quark form factor and $s(x)-\bar{s}(x)$ using a baryon-meson fluctuation model and a novel nonperturbative model based on light-front holographic QCD. This procedure leads to a Veneziano-like expression of the form factor, which depends exclusively on the twist of the hadron and the properties of the Regge trajectory of the vector meson which couples to the quark current in the hadron. The holographic structure of the model allows us to introduce unambiguously quark masses in the form factors and quark distributions preserving the hard scattering counting rule at large-$Q^2$ and the inclusive counting rule at large-$x$. Quark masses modify the Regge intercept which governs the small-$x$ behavior of quark distributions, therefore modifying their small-$x$ singular behavior. Both nonperturbative approaches provide descriptions of the strange-antistrange asymmetry and intrinsic strangeness in the nucleon consistent with the lattice QCD result.

Origin of fermion generations from extended noncommutative geometry

We propose a way to understand the 3 fermion generations by the algebraic structures of noncommutative geometry, which is a promising framework to unify the standard model and general relativity. We make the tensor product extension and the quaternion extension on the framework. Each of the two extensions alone keeps the action invariant, and we consider them as the almost trivial structures of the geometry. We combine the two extensions, and show the corresponding physical effects, i.e., the emergence of 3 fermion generations and the mass relationships among those generations. We define the coordinate fiber space of the bundle of the manifold as the space in which the classical noncommutative geometry is expressed, then the tensor product extension explicitly shows the contribution of structures in the non-coordinate base space of the bundle to the action. The quaternion extension plays an essential role to reveal the physical effect of the structure in the non-coordinate base space.

Light speed variation from gamma ray bursts: criteria for low energy photons

We examine a method to detect the light speed variation from gamma ray burst data observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST). We suggest new criteria to determine the characteristic time for low energy photons by the energy curve and the average energy curve, and obtain similar results compared with those from the light curve. We offer a new criterion with both the light curve and the average energy curve to determine the characteristic time for low energy photons. We then apply the new criteria to the GBM NaI data, the GBM BGO data, and the LAT LLE data, and obtain consistent results for three different sets of low energy photons from different FERMI detectors.

Lorentz violation from gamma-ray burst neutrinos

The Lorentz violation~(LV) effect of ultra-relativistic particles can be tested by gamma-ray burst~(GRB) neutrinos and photons. The IceCube Collaboration has observed plenty of ultra-high energy neutrinos, including four events of PeV scale neutrinos. Recent studies suggested a possible energy dependent speed variation of GRB neutrinos in a similar way to that of GRB photons. Here we find that all four events of PeV neutrinos with associated GRB candidates can satisfy a regularity found from TeV neutrinos about a linear form correlation between the observed time difference and the LV factor. Such regularity indicates a Lorentz violation scale $E_{\rm LV}=(6.5\pm 0.4)\times10^{17}~{\rm GeV}$, which is comparable with that determined by GRB photons. We also suggest that neutrinos and anti-neutrinos can be superluminal and subluminal respectively due to opposite signs of LV correction.

Quark-antiquark asymmetry of helicity distributions in the nucleon sea

We study the helicity distributions of light flavor quark-antiquark ($q \bar{q}$) pairs in the nucleon sea. The valence quarks are handled by adopting the light-cone SU(6) quark-spectator-diquark model and the sea $q \bar{q}$ pairs are treated from statistical consideration by introducing the helicity suppression factors $l_q(x)$ and $\bar l_q(x)$ to parametrize the helicity distributions of q-flavor sea quark and antiquark respectively, while $Δl_q(x)=l_q(x)-\bar l_q(x)$ represents a combined effect of helicity contribution due to sea $q \bar{q}$ pairs. From fitting the nucleon polarization asymmetries $A^N_1$ in inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes and the single-spin asymmetries $A^{W^{\pm}}_L$ in Drell-Yan type processes, we find a significant asymmetry between the quark and antiquark helicity distributions of the nucleon sea. Therefore the quark-antiquark asymmetry of helicity distributions of nucleon sea $q \bar{q}$ pairs, i.e., $Δq_s(x) \neq Δ\bar q_s(x)$, plays an important role for a comprehensive understanding of the nucleon spin content.

Nuclear EMC effect through $\barΛ/Λ$ production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering processes

We calculate $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hadron production cross sections in charged lepton semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off nuclear target ($A$, using iron $\mathrm{Fe}$ as an example) and deuteron ($D$) target. The results show that the ratio $(\barΛ^{A}/Λ^{A})/(\barΛ^{D}/Λ^{D})$ is sensitive to the sea quark content of the nucleus. We adopt three different models to take the nuclear EMC effect into account. The ratio $(\barΛ^{A}/Λ^{A})/(\barΛ^{D}/Λ^{D})$ is predicted to be different by these different models.

Electroweak properties of octet baryons in light-cone quark-diquark model

We study the electroweak properties of ground state octet baryons in a relativistic quark-spectator-diquark model, with light-front formalism applied to take relativistic effects into account. Our model provides a consistent picture of the electroweak properties of the ground state octet baryons in the low momentum transfer region. The Melosh-Wigner rotation is applied as the transformation relation between spinors in the instant form and front form. Numerical results are presented for the magnetic moments, weak transition charges and Sachs form factors. Our results are in good agreement with experimental measurements and other theoretical results.

Regularity of high energy photon events from gamma ray bursts

The effect of Quantum Gravity (QG) may bring a tiny light speed variation as $v(E)=c(1-E/E_{\rm LV})$, where $E$ is the photon energy and $E_{\rm LV}$ is a Lorentz violation scale. A remarkable regularity was suggested in previous studies to look for the light speed variation from high energy photon events of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). We provide a general analysis on the data of 25 bright GRBs observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST). Such method allows a completed scan over all possibilities in a more clean and impartial way without any bias compared to previous intuitive analysis. The results show that with the increase in the intrinsic energies of photons, such regularity truly emerges and gradually becomes significant. For photons with intrinsic energies higher than 40~GeV, the regularity exists at a significance of 3-5~$σ$ with $E_{\rm LV}=3.6\times 10^{17}~\rm GeV$ determined by the GRB data.

Effect of sea quarks on single-spin asymmetries $A^{W^{\pm}}_{N}$ in transversely polarized pp collisions at RHIC

We calculate the single-spin asymmetries $A^{W^{\pm}}_{N}$ of $W^{\pm}$ bosons produced in transversely polarized pp collisions with the valence part of the up (u) and down (d) quark Sivers functions treated by an available parametrization and the light-cone quark spectator-diquark model respectively, while the sea part Sivers functions of u and d quarks treated as parametrization. Comparing our results with those from experimental data at RHIC, we find that the Sivers functions of sea quarks play an important role in the determination of the shapes of $A^{W^{\pm}}_{N}$. It is shown that $A^{W^{-}}_{N}$ is sensitive to u sea Sivers function, while $A^{W^{+}}_{N}$ to d sea Sivers function intuitively. The results show that the contributions of u and d sea Sivers functions are rather sizable and of the same sign, and their signs agree with that of d valence quarks and are opposite to that of u valence quarks.

Transverse charge densities of the deuteron in soft-wall AdS/QCD

We investigate the transverse charge densities of the deuteron in a soft-wall AdS/QCD model by considering both the unpolarized and the transversely polarized cases. The deuteron form factors are derived from the soft-wall AdS/QCD model and it is shown that the calculated results agree with the phenomenological parametrization and experimental data. The transverse charge densities of the deuteron are also derived from the soft-wall AdS/QCD model, and we notice slight deviations from those of the phenomenological parametrization.

Effect of sea quarks on the single-spin asymmetries $A^{W^{\pm}}_{L}$ in polarized pp collisions at RHIC

We calculate the single-spin asymmetries $A^{W^{\pm}}_{L}$ of $W^{\pm}$ bosons produced in polarized pp collisions with the valence part of the up and down quark helicity distributions modeled by the light-cone quark-spectator-diquark model while the sea part helicity distributions of the up and down quarks treated as parametrization. Comparing our results with those from experimental data at RHIC, we find that the helicity distributions of sea quarks play an important role in the determination of the shapes of $A^{W^{\pm}}_{L}$. It is shown that $A^{W^{-}}_{L}$ is sensitive to $Δ\bar u$, while $A^{W^{+}}_{L}$ to $Δ\bar d$ intuitively. The experimental data of the polarized structure functions and the sum of helicities are also important to constrain the sizes of quark helicity distributions both for the sea part and the valence part of the nucleon.

Unification of gravity and quantum field theory from extended noncommutative geometry

We make biframe and quaternion extensions on the noncommutative geometry, and construct the biframe spacetime for the unification of gravity and quantum field theory. The extended geometry distinguishes between the ordinary spacetime based on the frame bundle and an extra non-coordinate spacetime based on the biframe bundle constructed by our extensions. The ordinary spacetime frame is globally flat and plays the role as the spacetime frame in which the fields of the standard model are defined. The non-coordinate frame is locally flat and is the gravity spacetime frame. The field defined in both frames of such "flat" biframe spacetime can be quantized and plays the role as the gravity field which couples with all the fields to connect the gravity effect with the standard model. Thus we provide a geometric paradigm in which gravity and the quantum field theory can be unified.

Strange quark-antiquark asymmetry of nucleon sea from $Λ/\barΛ$ polarization

Distinctions between quark to $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ longitudinal spin transfers in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process were observed by the E665 and COMPASS Collaborations. There are suggestions that the difference between $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ production is related to the asymmetric strange-antistrange distribution inside the nucleon. However, previous calculations are still too small to explain the experimental data. From a realistic consideration of quark to $Λ$ fragmentation due to different flavors, we investigate the strange quark contribution for $Λ$ production and polarization. We find that the strange quark-antiquark asymmetry of the nucleon sea can be amplified into an observable quantity from the difference between $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ polarizations after taking into account the larger probability of the $Λ$ produced from the $s$ quark fragmentation process compared to that from the $u$ or $d$ quark. The qualitative agreement between our calculation and the experimental data supports the existence of the intrinsic strange sea and the strange-antistrange asymmetry. Thus the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ does open a new window to probe the nucleon sea properties, especially the strange content and its quark-antiquark asymmetry.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays in Our Universe

Our Universe is described jointly by Einstein's relativity principle and the quantum principle; there the existence of the smallest units of matter, such as electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and photons, is well established and the smallest units of matter are described by the Standard Model. Based on these, we have a clear picture for the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR's), for energies greater than $E > 10^{13}\, eV$ but less than $E < 10^{26}\, eV$, in the cosmic medium of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and of the cosmic background neutrinos (CB$ν$'s). We find that the CMB plays a pivot role in this energy range, so that the observed "knee(s)" and the "ankle" could be understood in reasonable terms. What we might observe at the energy near $10^{25}\,eV$', the so-called "$W^\pm$ bursts" or "$Z^0$ bursts", is briefly discussed. Meanwhile, in the early Universe, the CB$ν$'s, in view of the tiny neutrino mass, gave rise to the clustering phenomenon, resulting in a neutrino halo attached to each visual ordinary-matter object, such as the Earth, the Sun, and stars - with the $PeV$ neutrinos near the surface of the Fermi-Dirac sphere of the neutrino halo of the Earth playing the most fundamental role.

Gluon Sivers function in a light-cone spectator model

We calculate the gluon Sivers function of the proton in the valence-$x$ region using a light-cone spectator model with the presence of the gluon degree of freedom. We obtain the values of the parameters by fitting the model resulting gluon density distribution to the known parametrization. We find that our results agree with the recent phenomenological extraction of the gluon Sivers function after considering the evolution effect. We also estimate the mean transverse momentum of the gluon in a transversely polarized proton and find that it is within the range implied by the Burkardt sum rule.
