Neutrino properties from ultra-high energy cosmic neutrinos

Neutrino properties can be constrained by the detection of ultra-high energy cosmic neutrinos (UHECNs). By using the updated global fitting results of neutrino mixing parameters, we present predictions on the neutrino flavor ratios at the Earth from three possibly astrophysical sources. Comparing with the latest IceCube data, we find that the normal hierarchy (NH) and inverted hierarchy (IH) cases from the initial ratios $ϕ_{ν_e}^0:ϕ_{ν_μ}^0:ϕ_{ν_τ}^0=$1:2:0 and 0:1:0 are compatible with the data in the standard neutrino oscillation scenario. We also examine the neutrino flavor ratios in a neutrino decay scenario beyond the standard model, and introduce the special case that two mass eigenstates of neutrinos, i.e., $ν_1$ and $ν_2$, are degenerated. We find that the IH case and the degenerate NH case from the 1:2:0 and 0:1:0 sources are still permissible with the IceCube data within the $3σ$ error range. The general constraints only rely on the neutrino mixing and oscillation framework are also discussed.

Light speed variation from gamma-ray bursts

The effect of quantum gravity can bring a tiny light speed variation which is detectable through energetic photons propagating from gamma ray bursts (GRBs) to an observer such as the space observatory. Through an analysis of the energetic photon data of the GRBs observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST), we reveal a surprising regularity of the observed time lags between photons of different energies with respect to the Lorentz violation factor due to the light speed energy dependence. Such regularity suggests a linear form correction of the light speed $v(E)=c(1-E/E_{\rm LV})$, where $E$ is the photon energy and $E_{\rm LV}=(3.60 \pm 0.26) \times 10^{17}~ \rm GeV$ is the Lorentz violation scale measured by the energetic photon data of GRBs. The results support an energy dependence of the light speed in cosmological space.

Light speed variation from gamma ray burst GRB 160509A

It is postulated in Einstein's relativity that the speed of light in vacuum is a constant for all observers. However, the effect of quantum gravity could bring an energy dependence of light speed. Even a tiny speed variation, when amplified by the cosmological distance, may be revealed by the observed time lags between photons with different energies from astrophysical sources. From the newly detected long gamma ray burst GRB~160509A, we find evidence to support the prediction for a linear form modification of light speed in cosmological space.

Light-front holographic QCD with generic dilaton profile

We generalize the soft-wall and hard-wall models to a light-front holographic QCD model with a generic dilaton profile. The effective potential induced by a higher power dilaton profile is interpreted as a stronger color confinement at long distance, and it gradually evolves to the hard-wall model when the power increases to infinity. As an application, we investigate the exotic meson states recently discovered in experiments in the generic soft-wall model with a higher power dilaton profile, and the results are in agreement with the spectra of the exotic mesons. Our calculation indicates a weaker interaction at short distance and a stronger interaction at large distance for the components in the exotic mesons. The generic dilaton profile deserves further scrutiny for understanding the strong interaction and for applications.

A unified approach to hadron phenomenology at zero and finite temperatures in a hard-wall AdS/QCD model

We propose a unified approach to study meson, nucleon and $Δ$-baryon properties at zero and finite temperatures in the context of hard-wall AdS/QCD model. We first combine some previous works dealing with mesons and baryons separately, and introduce a new parameter~$ξ$ so that the model could give a universal description of spectrum and couplings of both sectors in a self-consistent way. All observables calculated numerically show reasonable agreement with experimental data. We then study these observables at nonzero temperature by modifying the AdS space-time into AdS-Schwartzchild space-time. Numerically solving the model, we find an interesting temperature dependence of the spectrum and the couplings. We also make a prediction on the finite temperature decay width of some nucleon and $Δ$ excited states.

Baryon properties from light-front holographic QCD

We investigate the properties of octet and decuplet baryons in a light-front holographic model. By taking into account the effect of nonvanishing quark mass, we obtain the modified light-front wave functions which are applicable at both low and high energy scales. We calculate the spectra, form factors, magnetic moments and electromagnetic radii of octet and decuplet baryons with the results all matching the experiments well. The axial charge, which describes the contribution of quark helicity to the proton spin in the quark-parton model at the high energy scale, is also consistent with the experimental value. Therefore, the light-front holographic method is successful in studying hadronic physics at all energy scales, and the nonzero quark mass is essential to understand the spin structures together with other low energy properties.

Spherically symmetric solution of $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ gravity at low energy

The weak-field and slow-motion limit of $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ gravity is developed up to $(v/c)^{4}$ order in a spherically symmetric background. Considering the Taylor expansion of a general function $f$ around vanishing values of $R$ and $\mathcal{G}$, we present general vacuum solutions up to $(v/c)^{4}$ order for the gravitational field generated by a ball-like source. The spatial behaviors at $(v/c)^{2}$ order are the same for $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ gravity and $f(R)$ gravity, and their corresponding real valued static behaviors are presented and compared with the one in general relativity. The static Yukawa-like behavior is proved to be compatible with the previous result of the most general fourth-order theory. At $(v/c)^{4}$ order, the static corrections to the Yukawa-like behavior for $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ gravity, $f(R)$ gravity, and the Starobinsky gravity are presented and compared with the one in general relativity.

Examination of pairs in neutrino mixing matrix

We exam the pairs of neutrino mixing matrix and suggest pairs that can be used in the construction of new mixing patterns, with "pair" denoting the equality of the modulus of a pair of matrix elements. The results show that the tri-maximal mixing in $ν_2$ and the $μ$-$τ$ interchange symmetry are good choices under current experimental results. The two cases of bi-pair mixing pattern depend on the mass hierarchy of neutrinos. We also derive constraints on the CP-phase by the pairs. The results are compatible with the maximal CP-violation in most cases that are both self-consistent and consistent with experimental results.

The Majorana neutrino mass matrix indicated by the current data

The Majorana neutrino mass matrix combines information from the neutrino masses and the leptonic mixing in the flavor basis. Its invariance under some transformation matrices indicates the existence of certain residual symmetry. We offer an intuitive display of the structure of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix, using the whole set of the oscillation data. The structure is revealed depending on the lightest neutrino mass. We find that there are three regions with distinct characteristics of structure. A group effect and the $μ$-$τ$ exchange symmetry are observed. Six types of texture non-zeros are shown. Implications for flavor models are discussed.

Double Spin Asymmetries $A_{LT}^{\cosϕ_S}$ and $A_{LT}^{\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)}$ in semi-inclusive DIS

We investigate the double spin asymmetries of pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with a longitudinal polarized beam off a transversely polarized proton target. Particularly, we consider the $\cosϕ_S$ and $\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ modulations, which can be interpreted by the convolution of the twist-3 transverse momentum dependent distributions and twist-2 fragmentation functions. Three different origins are taken into account simultaneously for each asymmetry: the $g_T D_1$ term, the $e_T H_1^\perp$ term, and the $e_T^\perp H_1^\perp$ term in the $\cosϕ_S$ asymmetry; and the $g_T^\perp D_1$ term, the $e_T H_1^\perp$ term, and the $e_T^\perp H_1^\perp$ term in the $\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ asymmetry. We calculate the four twist-3 distributions $g_T(x,\boldsymbol{k}_T^2)$, $g_T^\perp(x,\boldsymbol{k}_T^2)$, $e_T(x,\boldsymbol{k}_T^2)$, and $e_T^\perp(x,\boldsymbol{k}_T^2)$ in a spectator-diquark model including vector diquarks. Then we predict the two corresponding asymmetries for charged and neutral pions at the kinematics of HERMES, JLab, and COMPASS for the first time. The numerical estimates indicate that the two different angular-dependence asymmetries are sizable by several percent at HERMES and JLab, and the $\cosϕ_S$ asymmetry has a strong dependence on the Bjorken $x$. Our predictions also show that the dominant contribution to the $\cosϕ_S$ asymmetry comes from the $g_T D_1$ term, while the $g_T^\perp D_1$ term gives the main contribution to the $\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ asymmetry; the other two $T$-odd terms almost give negligible contributions. In particular, the $\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ asymmetry provides a unique opportunity to probe the distribution $g_T^\perp$.

A phenomenological study on the $\cosϕ_h$ azimuthal asymmetry in double longitudinally Polarized SIDIS

We study the $\cos{ϕ_h}$ azimuthal asymmetry in double polarized semi-inclusive pion production by considering dynamical twist-3 effects. In particular, we evaluate the role of the transverse momentum dependent distributions $e_L(x, k_T^2)$ and $g_L^\perp(x, k_T^2)$ on the asymmetry. Using two different sets of spectator model results for these distributions, we predict the $\cos{ϕ_h}$ asymmetry of $π^+$, $π^-$, and $π^0$ at the kinematic configuration available at CLAS, HERMES and COMPASS. Our estimates show that the asymmetries are positive for all the pions and could be accessed by CLAS and HERMES. We also find that $g_L^\perp$ gives the dominant contribution to the $\cosϕ_h$ asymmetry, while the contribution of $e_L$ is almost negligible.

Quark Wigner distributions in a light-cone spectator model

We investigate the quark Wigner distributions in a light-cone spectator model. The Wigner distribution, as a quasi-distribution function, provides the most general one-parton information in a hadron. Combining the polarization configurations, unpolarized, longitudinal polarized or transversal polarized, of the quark and the proton, we can define 16 independent Wigner distributions at leading twist. We calculate all these Wigner distributions for the $u$ quark and the $d$ quark respectively. In our calculation, both the scalar and the axial-vector spectators are included, and the Melosh-Wigner rotation effects for both the quark and the axial-vector spectator are taken into account. The results provide us a very rich picture of the quark structure in the proton.

Quark angular momentum in a spectator model

We investigate the quark angular momentum in a model with the nucleon being a quark and a spectator. Both scalar and axial-vector spectators are included. We perform the calculations in the light-cone formalism where the parton concept is well defined. We calculate the quark helicity and canonical orbital angular momentum. Then we calculate the gravitational form factors which are often related to the kinetic angular momentums, and find that even in a no gauge field model we cannot identify the canonical angular momentums with half the sum of gravitational form factors. In addition, we examine the model relation between the orbital angular momentum and pretzelosity, and find it is violated in the axial-vector case.

Angular momentum decomposition from a QED example

We investigate the angular momentum decomposition with a quantum electrodynamics example to clarify the proton spin decomposition debates. We adopt the light-front formalism where the parton model is well defined. We prove that the sum of fermion and boson angular momenta is equal to half the sum of the two gravitational form factors $A(0)$ and $B(0)$, as is well known. However, the suggestion to make a separation of the above relation into the fermion and boson pieces, as a way to measure the orbital angular momentum of fermions or bosons, respectively, is not justified from our explicit calculation.

Constraints on absolute neutrino Majorana mass from current data

We present new constraints on the neutrino Majorana masses from the current data of neutrinoless double beta decay and neutrino flavour mixing. With the latest results of $0νββ$ progresses from various isotopes, including the recent calculations of the nuclear matrix elements, we find that the strongest constraint of the effective Majorana neutrino mass is from the $^{136}\rm{Xe}$ data of the EXO-200 and KamLAND-Zen collaborations. Further more, by combining the $0νββ$ experimental data with the neutrino mixing parameters from new analyses, we get the mass upper limits of neutrino mass eigenstates and flavour eigenstates and suggest several relations among these neutrino masses.

Nucleon strange $s\bar s$ asymmetry to the $Λ/\barΛ$ fragmentation

The difference between the $Λ$ and $\bar Λ$ longitudinal spin transfers in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process is intensively studied. The study is performed in the current fragmentation region, by considering the intermediate hyperon decay processes and sea quark fragmentation processes, while the strange sea $s\bar s$ asymmetry in the nucleon is taken into account. The calculation in the light-cone quark-diquark model shows that the strange sea asymmetry gives a proper trend to the difference between the $Λ$ and $\bar Λ$ longitudinal spin transfers. When considering the nonzero final hadron transverse momentum, our results can explain the COMPASS data reasonably. The nonzero final hadron transverse momentum is interpreted as a natural constraint to the final hadron $z$ range where the longitudinal spin transfer is more sensitive to the strange sea $s\bar s$ asymmetry.

Transverse single-spin asymmetries of pion production in semi-inclusive DIS at subleading twist

We study the single-spin asymmetries with the $\sinϕ_S$ and $\sin(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ angular dependences for charged and neutral pions produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering on the transversely polarized proton target. The theoretical interpretations of the two asymmetries are presented in terms of the convolution of the twist-3 quark transverse momentum dependent distributions and twist-2 fragmentation functions. Specifically, we investigate the role of the distributions $f_T$, $h_T$ and $h_T^\perp$ in the $\sinϕ_S$ asymmetry, as well as the role of the distributions $f_T^\perp$, $h_T$ and $h_T^\perp$ in the $\sin(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ asymmetry. We calculate these distributions in a spectator-diquark model and predict the corresponding asymmetries for the first time, considering the kinematics at HERMES, JLab and COMPASS. The numerical estimates show that the asymmetries are sizable, and the dominant contribution to the $\sinϕ_S$ asymmetry comes from the T-odd distribution $f_T$, while $f_T^\perp$ gives the main contribution to the $\sin(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ asymmetry. The future measurements on these asymmetries can shed light on the information of twist-3 transverse momentum dependent distributions.

Generalized form factors of the nucleon in a light-cone spectator-diquark model

We investigate the generalized form factors of the nucleon in a light-cone spectator-diquark model. Compared to the form factors, the generalized form factors contain some more information of the structure of the nucleon. In our calculation, both the scalar and the axial-vector spectator-diquark are taken into account. As a relation between the spin in the instant form and that in the light-cone form, the Melosh-Wigner rotation effect is included for both the quark and the axial-vector diquark. We also provide numerical results from our model calculations, and the results are comparable with those from lattice QCD.
