High Harmonic Radiation from a Low-K Biharmonic Planar Undulator

High harmonic generation by an undulator is a key issue for extending the photon energy range of synchrotron light sources. In this work, we propose a biharmonic planar undulator operating in the low-K regime (K<1) to enhance high-harmonic radiation. By superimposing a 1/3 subharmonic undulator field onto a short-period superconducting undulator, a biharmonic undulator is formed. The on-axis intensities of the 5th and 7th harmonics are significantly enhanced, corresponding to radiation near the 2nd harmonic of the short-period superconducting undulator. The results are confirmed by both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations using SPECTRA. It shows that the biharmonic configuration effectively overcomes the limitations of low-K undulators for high harmonic generation. In this study, reasonable undulator parameters are selected with full consideration of technical challenges. The simulation indicates that an unprecedented photon flux in the 16-22 keV energy range can be achieved with a 3.5 GeV beam, offering a promising approach for high brightness, short-wavelength synchrotron radiation.

Peak current reduction in presence of RF phase modulation in the dual RF system

High harmonic cavities are widely used in electron storage rings to lengthen the bunch, thereby enhancing the Touschek lifetime, reducing the IBS effect, as well as providing Landau damping. When the RF phase is modulated in such a dual-RF system, simulations reveal that the peak current can be further reduced. This paper presents the simulation results and explains the underlying mechanism.

A machine-learning based closed orbit feedback for the SSRF storage ring

In order to improve the stability of synchrotron radiation, we developed a new method of machine learning-based closed orbit feedback and piloted it in the storage ring of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). In our experiments, not only can the machine learning-based closed orbit feedback carry out horizontal, vertical and RF frequency feedback simultaneously, but it also has better convergence and convergence speed than the traditional Slow Orbit Feed Back (SOFB) system. What's more, the residual values of the correctors' currents variations after correction can be almost ignored. This machine learning-based new method is expected to establish a new closed orbit feedback system and improve the orbit stability of the storage ring in daily operation.

A synchrotron-based kilowatt-level radiation source for EUV lithograph

A compact damping ring with limited circumference of about 160 m is proposed for producing kilowatt-level coherent EUV radiation. The electron bunch in the ring is modulated by a 257nm wavelength laser with the help of the angular dispersion induced micro-bunching method [C. Feng and Z. Zhao, Sci. Rep. 7, 4724 (2017)]. Coherent radiation at 13.5 nm with an average power of about 2.5 kW can be achieved with the state-of-the-art accelerator and laser technologies.

Extreme bright coherent synchrotron radiation produced in a low emittance electron storage ring by the angular dispersion induced microbunching scheme

Generation of extreme bright coherent synchrotron radiation in a short wavelength range is of remarkable interest in the synchrotron light source community. In this paper, a novel technique is adopted to produce the coherent radiation which uses an angular dispersion to enhance the micro-bunch by a tiny amplitude of energy modulation. This scheme can be inserted in a long straight section of a storage ring. A lattice design of an extreme-low emittance storage ring with 3.5 GeV energy is presented in this paper, which employs a higher order achromat (HOA) concept. We show the design results for the multi-bend achromat (MBA) lattice with an emittance of 20 pm-rad in about 900-meter circumference. Numerical simulations demonstrated that this angular dispersion induced micro-bunch scheme can be used to generate coherent radiation near soft x-ray region, the repetition rate can reach 10 kHz and the spectral brightness can reach 3*10^24phs/s/mm^2/mrad^2/0.1%BW.

Using a Bessel light beam as an ultra-short period helical undulator

The undulator is a critical component to produce synchrotron radiation and free electron laser. When a Bessel light beam carrying the orbit angular momentum co-propagates with an electron beam, a net transverse deflection force will be subjected to the electron beam. As a result of dephasing effect, the deflection force will oscillate acting as an undulator. For such a laser based undulator, the period length can reach sub-millimeter level, which will greatly reduce the electron energy for the required X-ray production.

Multi-bunch injection for SSRF storage ring

The multi-bunch injection has been adopt at SSRF which greatly increases the injection rate and reduces injection time compared to the single bunch injection. The multi-bunch injection will massively reduce the beam failure time during users operation and prolong pulsed injection hardware lifetime. In this paper, the scheme to produce multi bunches for the RF electron gun is described. The refilling result and the beam orbit stability for top up operation is discussed.

Beam dynamics of the superconducting wiggler on the SSRF storage ring

In the SSRF Phase-II beamline project, a Superconducting Wiggler (SW) will be installed in the electron storage ring. It may greatly impact on the beam dynamics due to the very high magnetic field. The emittance growth becomes a main problem, even after a well correction of the beam optics. A local achromatic lattice is studied, in order to combat the emittance growth and keep the good performance of the SSRF storage ring, as well as possible. Other effects of the SW are simulated and optimized as well, including the beta beating, the tune shift, the dynamic aperture, and the field error effects.

Simulation of the fast ion instability in SSRF storage ring

Fast ion instability has been observed in the early commissioning and operation of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) storage ring. In this paper, a weak-strong code is used to simulate the fast ion instability in SSRF storage ring. Various fill patterns and gas pressures are investigated. The results show that the mini-train fill patterns are very effective to suppress the growth of the fast ion instability.
