Laplace transformation of Lie class ω=1 overdetermined systems

In this paper we investigate overdetermined systems of scalar PDEs on the plane with one common characteristic, whose general solution depends on 1 function of 1 variable. We describe linearization of such systems and their integration via Laplace transformation, relating this to Lie's integration theorem and formal theory of PDEs.

Finite-dimensionality in Tanaka theory

In this paper we extend the Tanaka finiteness theorem and inequality for the number of symmetries to arbitrary distributions (differential systems) and provide several applications.

Rank 2 distributions of Monge equations: symmetries, equivalences, extensions

By developing the Tanaka theory for rank 2 distributions, we completely classify classical Monge equations having maximal finite-dimensional symmetry algebras with fixed (albeit arbitrary) pair of its orders. Investigation of the corresponding Tanaka algebras leads to a new Lie-Backlund theorem. We prove that all flat Monge equations are successive integrable extensions of the Hilbert-Cartan equation. Many new examples are provided.

Involutivity of field equations

We prove involutivity of Einstein, Einstein-Maxwell and other field equations by calculating the Spencer cohomology of these systems. Relation with Cartan method is traced in details. Basic implications through Cartan-Kahler theory are derived.

Point classification of 2nd order ODEs: Tresse classification revisited and beyond

In 1896 Tresse gave a complete description of relative differential invariants for the pseudogroup action of point transformations on the 2nd order ODEs. The purpose of this paper is to review, in light of modern geometric approach to PDEs, this classification and also discuss the role of absolute invariants and the equivalence problem.

Compatibility, multi-brackets and integrability of systems of PDEs

We establish an efficient compatibility criterion for a system of generalized complete intersection type in terms of certain multi-brackets of differential operators. These multi-brackets generalize the higher Jacobi-Mayer brackets, important in the study of evolutionary equations and the integrability problem. We also calculate Spencer delta-cohomology of generalized complete intersections and evaluate the formal functional dimension of the solutions space. The results are applied to establish new integration methods and solve several differential-geometric problems.

Symmetry approaches for reductions of PDEs, differential constraints and Lagrange-Charpit method

Many methods for reducing and simplifying differential equations are known. They provide various generalizations of the original symmetry approach of Sophus Lie. Plenty of relations between them have been noticed and in this note a unifying approach will be discussed. It is rather close to the classical differential constraint method, but we provide certain rigorous results basing on recent advances in compatibility theory of non-linear overdetermined systems and homological methods for PDEs.

Invariants and submanifolds in almost complex geometry

In this paper we describe the algebra of differential invariants for GL(n,C)-structures. This leads to classification of almost complex structures of general positions. The invariants are applied to the existence problem of higher-dimensional pseudoholomorphic submanifolds.

Differential invariants of the motion group actions

Differential invariants of a (pseudo)group action can vary when restricted to invariant submanifolds (differential equations). The algebra is still governed by the Lie-Tresse theorem, but may change a lot. We describe in details the case of the motion group $O(n)\ltimes\R^n$ acting on the full (unconstraint) jet-space as well as on some invariant equations.

Anomaly of linearization and auxiliary integrals

In this note we discuss some formal properties of universal linearization operator, relate this to brackets of non-linear differential operators and discuss application to the calculus of auxiliary integrals, used in compatibility reductions of PDEs.

Invariant characterization of Liouville metrics and polynomial integrals

A criterion in terms of differential invariants for a metric on a surface to be Liouville is established. Moreover, in this paper we completely solve in invariant terms the local mobility problem of a 2D metric, considered by Darboux: How many quadratic in momenta integrals does the geodesic flow of a given metric possess? The method is also applied to recognition of other polynomial integrals of geodesic flows.

Dimension of the solutions space of PDEs

We discuss the dimensional characterization of the solutions space of a formally integrable system of partial differential equations and provide certain formulas for calculations of these dimensional quantities.

Invariants of pseudogroup actions: Homological methods and Finiteness theorem

We study the equivalence problem of submanifolds with respect to a transitive pseudogroup action. The corresponding differential invariants are determined via formal theory and lead to the notions of k-variants and k-covariants, even in the case of non-integrable pseudogroup. Their calculation is based on the cohomological machinery: We introduce a complex for covariants, define their cohomology and prove the finiteness theorem. This implies the well-known Lie-Tresse theorem about differential invariants. We also generalize this theorem to the case of pseudogroup action on differential equations.

Entropy via multiplicity

The topological entropy of piecewise affine maps is studied. It is shown that singularities may contribute to the entropy only if there is angular expansion and we bound the entropy via the expansion rates of the map. As a corollary we deduce that non-expanding conformal piecewise affine maps have zero topological entropy. We estimate the entropy of piecewise affine skew-products. Examples of abnormal entropy growth are provided.

Spencer delta-cohomology, restrictions, characteristics and involutive symbolic PDEs

We generalize the notion of involutivity to systems of differential equations of different orders and show that the classical results due to Guillemin and Quillen relating involutivity, restrictions, characteristics and characteristicity, known for first order systems, extend to the general context, though in a modified form. This involves, in particular, a new definition of strong characteristicity. The proof exploits a spectral sequence relating Spencer delta-cohomology of a symbolic system and its restriction to a non-characteristic subspace.

Examples of integrable sub-Riemannian geodesic flows

Motivated by a paper of Bolsinov and Taimanov DG/9911193 we consider non-holonomic situation and exhibit examples of sub-Riemannian metrics with integrable geodesic flows and positive topological entropy. Moreover the Riemannian examples are obtained as "holonomization" of sub-Riemannian ones. A feature of non-holonomic situation is non-compactness of the phase space. We also exhibit a Liouvulle-integrable Hamiltonian system with topological entropy of all integrals positive.

Nijenhuis tensors in pseudoholomorphic curves neighborhoods

Normal forms of almost complex structures in a neighborhood of pseudoholomorphic curve are considered. We define normal bundles of such curves and study the properties of linear bundle almost complex structures. We describe 1-jet of the almost complex structure along a curve in terms of its Nijenhuis tensor. For pseudoholomorphic tori we investigate the problem of pseudoholomorphic foliation of the neighborhood. We obtain some results on nonexistence of the tori deformation.
