Submaximally symmetric CR-structures

Hypersurface type CR-structures with non-degenerate Levi form on a manifold of dimension $(2n+1)$ have maximal symmetry dimension $n^2+4n+3$. We prove that the next (submaximal) possible dimension for a (local) symmetry algebra is $n^2+4$ for Levi-indefinite structures and $n^2+3$ for Levi-definite structures when $n>1$. In the exceptional case of CR-dimension $n=1$, the submaximal symmetry dimension 3 was computed by E.\,Cartan.

On the Einstein-Weyl and conformal self-duality equations

The equations governing anti-self-dual and Einstein-Weyl conformal geometries can be regarded as `master dispersionless systems' in four and three dimensions respectively. Their integrability by twistor methods has been established by Penrose and Hitchin. In this note we present, in specially adapted coordinate systems, explicit forms of the corresponding equations and their Lax pairs. In particular, we demonstrate that any Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl structure is locally given by a solution to the Manakov-Santini system, and we find a system of two coupled third-order scalar PDEs for a general anti-self-dual conformal structure in neutral signature.

Global Lie-Tresse theorem

We prove a global algebraic version of the Lie-Tresse theorem which states that the algebra of differential invariants of an algebraic pseudogroup action on a differential equation is generated by a finite number of rational-polynomial differential invariants and invariant derivations.

Integrable dispersionless PDE in 4D, their symmetry pseudogroups and deformations

We study integrable non-degenerate Monge-Ampere equations of Hirota type in 4D and demonstrate that their symmetry algebras have a distinguished graded structure, uniquely determining the equations. This is used to deform these heavenly type equations into new integrable PDE of the second order with large symmetry pseudogroups. We classify the obtained symmetric deformations and discuss self-dual hyper-Hermitian geometry of their solutions, which encode integrability via the twistor theory.

The gap phenomenon in parabolic geometries

The infinitesimal symmetry algebra of any Cartan geometry has maximum dimension realized by the flat model, but often this dimension drops significantly when considering non-flat geometries, so a gap phenomenon arises. For general (regular, normal) parabolic geometries of type (G,P), we use Tanaka theory to derive a universal upper bound on the submaximal symmetry dimension. We use Kostant's version of the Bott-Borel-Weil theorem to show that this bound is in fact sharp in almost all complex and split-real cases by exhibiting (abstract) models. We explicitly compute all submaximal symmetry dimensions when G is any complex or split-real simple Lie group.

Homogeneous almost complex structures in dimension 6 with semi-simple isotropy

We classify invariant almost complex structures on homogeneous manifolds of dimension 6 with semi-simple isotropy. Those with non-degenerate Nijenhuis tensor have the automorphism group of dimension either 14 or 9. An invariant almost complex structure with semi-simple isotropy is necessarily either of specified 6 homogeneous types or a left-invariant structure on a Lie group. For integrable invariant almost complex structures we classify all compatible invariant Hermitian structures on these homogeneous manifolds, indicate their integrability properties (Kahler, SNK, SKT) and mark the other interesting geometric properties (including the Gray-Hervella type).

Symmetries of almost complex structures and pseudoholomorphic foliations

Generically an almost complex structure has no symmetries at all, but there exist symmetric structures. In this paper we describe how to guarantee that the pseudogroup of local symmetries is small (finite-dimensional). It will be indicated that a large symmetry pseudogroup (infinite-dimensional) is a signature of some integrable structure, like a pseudoholomorphic foliation. We are mostly concerned with almost complex structures in dimensions 4 and 6, where we classify the sub-maximal symmetric structures, and we briefly discuss the higher dimensions. For non-degenerate almost complex structures we give an estimate on the dimension of the automorphism group.

Submaximal metric projective and metric affine structures

We prove that the next possible dimension after the maximal $n^2+2n$ for the Lie algebra of local projective symmetries of a metric on a manifold of dimension $n>1$ is $n^2-3n+5$ if the signature is Riemannian or $n=2$, $n^2-3n+6$ if the signature is Lorentzian and $n>2$, and $n^2-3n+8$ elsewise. We also prove that the Lie algebra of local affine symmetries of a metric has the same submaximal dimensions (after the maximal $n^2+n$) unless the signature is Riemannian and $n=3,4$, in which case the submaximal dimension is $n^2-3n+6$.

Generalized Lie-Bäcklund theorem for Lie class ω=1 overdetermined systems

In this paper we prove a version of Lie-Bäcklund theorem for overdetermined systems of scalar PDEs, whose general solution depends on 1 function of 1 variable. This generalizes the case of involutive system of the second order on the plane treated by E.Cartan in 1910. Many examples are provided.

Dispersionless integrable systems in 3D and Einstein-Weyl geometry

For several classes of second order dispersionless PDEs, we show that the symbols of their formal linearizations define conformal structures which must be Einstein-Weyl in 3D (or self-dual in 4D) if and only if the PDE is integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. This demonstrates that the integrability of these dispersionless PDEs can be seen from the geometry of their formal linearizations.

SDiff(2) and uniqueness of the Plebański equation

The group of area preserving diffeomorphisms showed importance in the problems of self-dual gravity and integrability theory. We discuss how representations of this infinite-dimensional Lie group can arise in mathematical physics from pure local considerations. Then using Lie algebra extensions and cohomology we derive the second Plebański equation and its geometry. We do not use Kähler or other additional structures but obtain the equation solely from the geometry of area preserving transformations group. We conclude that the Plebański equation is Lie remarkable.

Symmetry, compatibility and exact solutions of PDEs

We discuss various compatibility criteria for overdetermined systems of PDEs generalizing the approach to formal integrability via brackets of differential operators. Then we give sufficient conditions that guarantee that a PDE possessing a Lie algebra of symmetries has invariant solutions with respect to this Lie algebra. These conditions hold for generic=nondegenerate pairs (equation, symmetry) in certain dimension range for the Lie algebra. Finally we discuss models of equations with large symmetry algebras, which eventually lead to integration in closed form.

The gap phenomenon in the dimension study of finite type systems

In this paper several examples of gaps (lacunes) between dimensions of maximal and submaximal symmetric models are considered, which include investigation of number of independent linear and quadratic integrals of metrics and counting the symmetries of geometric structures and differential equations. A general result clarifying this effect in the case, when the structure is associated to a vector distribution, is proposed.

Lie theorem via rank 2 distributions (integration of PDE of class ω=1)

In this paper we investigate compatible overdetermined systems of PDEs on the plane with one common characteristic. Lie's theorem states that its integration is equivalent to a system of ODEs, and we relate this to the geometry of rank 2 distributions. We find a criterion for integration in quadratures and in closed form, as in the method of Darboux, and discuss nonlinear Laplace transformations and symmetric PDE models.
