Modes trimming and clustering in a weakly perturbed high-Q whispering gallery microresonator

In general, a high-Q microresonator can accommodate abundant whispering gallery modes (WGMs) with the mode number increasing with the dimensional sizes of the microresonator. Removing the unnecessary modes while reorganizing the remaining modes is of vital importance, which, however, has been proved challenging and usually results in a tradeoff with the Q of the microresonator. Here, we reveal an effective and controllable mode trimming and clustering mechanism underlying the generation of polygon and star modes in weakly perturbed tapered fiber-coupled lithium niobate whispering gallery microresonators. Experimentally, various polygon and star modes are observed in sequence within a single microresonator by tuning the excitation wavelength or varying the coupling position between a tapered fiber and the circular microresonator, which can be well reproduced with our theoretical model. The finding offers a ubiquitous solution for a broad range of applications requiring elaborate selection and organization of the high-Q WGMs.

Electro-optically tunable low phase-noise microwave synthesizer in an active lithium niobate microdisk

Photonic-based low-phase-noise microwave generation with real-time frequency tuning is crucial for a broad spectrum of subjects, including next-generation wireless communications, radar, metrology, and modern instrumentation. Here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, narrow-bandwidth dual-wavelength microlasers are generated from nearly degenerate polygon modes in a high-Q active lithium niobate microdisk. The high-Q polygon modes formation with independently controllable resonant wavelengths and free spectral ranges is enabled by the weak perturbation of the whispering gallery microdisk resonators using a tapered fiber. The stable beating signal confirms the low phase-noise achieved in the tunable laser. Owing to the high spatial overlap factors between the two nearly degenerate lasing modes as well as that between the two lasing modes and the pump mode, gain competition between the two modes is suppressed, leading to stable dual-wavelength laser generation and in turn the low noise microwave source. The measured microwave signal shows a linewidth of ~6.87 kHz, a phase noise of ~-123 dBc/Hz, and an electro-optic tuning efficiency of -1.66 MHz/V.

Photon retention in coherently excited nitrogen ions

Quantum coherence in quantum optics is an essential part of optical information processing and light manipulation. Alkali metal vapors, despite the numerous shortcomings, are traditionally used in quantum optics as a working medium due to convenient near-infrared excitation, strong dipole transitions and long-lived coherence. Here, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated photon retention and subsequent re-emittance with the quantum coherence in a system of coherently excited molecular nitrogen ions (N2+) which are produced using a strong 800 nm femtosecond laser pulse. Such photon retention, facilitated by quantum coherence, keeps releasing directly-unmeasurable coherent photons for tens of picoseconds, but is able to be read-out by a time-delayed femtosecond pulse centered at 1580 nm via two-photon resonant absorption, resulting in a strong radiation at 329.3 nm. We reveal a pivotal role of the excited-state population to transmit such extremely weak re-emitted photons in this system. This new finding unveils the nature of the coherent quantum control in N2+ for the potential platform for optical information storage in the remote atmosphere, and facilitates further exploration of fundamental interactions in the quantum optical platform with strong-field ionized molecules.

Two-dimensional Dirac semiconductor and its material realization

We propose a new concept of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semiconductor which is characterized by the emergence of fourfold degenerate band crossings near the band edge and provide a generic approach to realize this novel semiconductor in the community of material science. Based on the first-principle calculations and symmetry analysis, we discover recently synthesised triple-layer (TL)-BiOS2 is such Dirac semiconductor that features Dirac cone at X/Y point, protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry. Due to sandwich-like structure, each Dirac fermion in TL-BiOS2 can be regarded as a combination of two Weyl fermions with opposite chiralities, degenerate in momentum-energy space but separated in real space. Such Dirac semiconductor carries layer-dependent helical spin textures that never been reported before. Moreover, novel topological phase transitions are flexibly achieved in TL-BiOS2: (i) an vertical electric field can drive it into Weyl semiconductor with switchable spin polarization direction, (ii) an extensive strain is able to generate ferroelectric polarization and actuate it into Weyl nodal ring around X point and into another type of four-fold degenerate point at Y point. Our work extends the Dirac fermion into semiconductor systems and provides a promising avenue to integrate spintronics and optoelectronics in topological materials.

Type-III Weyl Semimetals: (TaSe4)2I

Weyl semimetals have been classified into type-I and type-II with respect to the geometry of their Fermi surfaces at the Weyl points. Here, we propose a new class of Weyl semimetal, whose unique Fermi surface contains two electron or two hole pockets touching at a multi-Weyl point, dubbed as type-III Weyl semimetal. Based on first-principles calculations, we first show that quasi-one-dimensional compound (TaSe4)2I is a type-III Weyl semimetal with larger chiral charges. (TaSe4)2I can support four-fold helicoidal surface states with remarkably long Fermi arcs on the (001) surface. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements are in agreement with the gapless nature of (TaSe4)2I at room temperature and reveal its characteristic dispersion. In addition, our calculations show that external strain could induce topological phase transitions in (TaSe4)2I among the type-III, type-II, and type-I Weyl semimetals, accompanied with the Lifshitz transitions of the Fermi surfaces. Therefore, our work first experimentally indicates (TaSe4)2I as a type-III Weyl semimetal and provides a promising platform to further investigate the novel physics of type-III Weyl fermions.

Double Dirac Nodal Line Semimetal with Torus Surface State

We propose a class of nodal line semimetals that host an eight-fold degenerate double Dirac nodal line (DDNL) with negligible spin-orbit coupling. We find only 5 of the 230 space groups host the DDNL. The DDNL can be considered as a combination of two Dirac nodal lines, and has a trivial Berry phase. This leads to two possible but completely different surface states, namely, a torus surface state covering the whole surface Brillouin zone and no surface state at all. Based on first-principles calculations, we predict that the hydrogen storage material LiBH is an ideal DDNL semimetal, where the line resides at Fermi level, is relatively flat in energy, and exhibits a large linear energy range. Interestingly, both the two novel surface states of DDNL can be realized in LiBH. Further, we predict that with a magnetic field parallel to DDNL, the Landau levels of DDNL are doubly degenerate due to Kramers-like degeneracy and have a doubly degenerate zero-mode.

Strain-tunable magnetism and nodal loops in monolayer MnB

Designing two-dimensional (2D) materials with magnetic and topological properties has continuously attracted intense interest in fundamental science and potential applications. Here, on the basis of first-principles calculations, we predict the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and Dirac nodal loop (NL) in the monolayer MnB, where the band crossing points are very close to the Fermi Level. Remarkably, a moderate strain can induce an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition, driving the monolayer MnB to a ferromagnetic metal with Weyl NLs. Such a type of topological quantum phase transition has not been observed before. In addition, the symmetry-protected properties of the two types of NLs as well as the magnetic critical temperatures are investigated. The controllable magnetic and topological order in monolayer MnB offers a unique platform for exploring topological quantum phase transitions and realizing nanospintronic devices.

Topological Nodal Line Electrides: Realization of Ideal Nodal Line State Nearly Immune from Spin-Orbit Coupling

Nodal line semimetals (NLSs) have attracted broad interest in current research. In most of existing NLSs, the intrinsic properties of nodal lines are greatly destroyed because nodal lines usually suffer sizable gaps induced by non-negligible spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In this work,we propose the topological nodal line electrides (TNLEs), which achieve electronic structures of nodal lines and electrides simultaneously, provide new insight on designing excellent NLSs nearly immune from SOC. Since the states near the Fermi level are most contributed by nonnucleus-bounded interstitial electrons, nodal lines in TNLEs manifest extremely small SOCinduced gap even possessing heavy elements. Especially, we propose the family of A2B (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; B= As, Sb, Bi) materials are realistic TNLEs with negligible SOC-induced gaps, which can play as excellent platforms to study the intrinsic properties of TNLEs

Weyl nodal point-line Fermion in ferromagnetic Eu$_5$Bi$_3$

Based on $ab$ $initio$ calculations and low-energy effective $k{\cdot}p$ model, we propose a type of Weyl nodal point-line fermion, composed of 0D Weyl points and 1D Weyl nodal line, in ferromagnetic material Eu$_5$Bi$_3$. In the absence of spin-orbital coupling (SOC), the spin-up bands host a pair of triply degenerate points together with a unique bird-cage like node structure. In the presence of SOC with (001) magnetization, each triplet point splits into a double Weyl point and a single Weyl point accompanied by two nodal rings, forming two sets of Weyl nodal point-line fermions near the Fermi level. The novel properties of Weyl nodal point-line fermion are explored by revealing the unusual Berry curvature field and demonstrating the pinned chiral surface states with exotic Fermi arcs at different planes. Moreover, a large anomalous Hall conductivity of -260 ($\hbar$/$e$)($Ω$cm)$^{-1}$ parallel to [001] direction is predicted. Our work offers a new perspective for exploring novel topological semimetal states with diverse band-crossing dimensions, and provides an ideal material candidate for future experimental realiztion.

Cat's cradle-like Dirac semimetals in layer groups with multiple screw axes: Application to 2D Borophene and Borophane

Recently, the crystal symmetry-protected topological semimetals have aroused extensive interests, especially for the nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected one. We list the possible nonmagnetic topological semimetals and develop their k.p Hamiltonian in all layer groups with multiple screw axes in the absence of spin-orbital coupling. We find a novel cat's cradle-like topological semimetal phase, which looks like multiple hourglass-like band structures staggered together. Furthermore, we propose the monolayer borophene and borophane with pmmn layer group as the first material class to realize such novel semimetal phase. A pair of tilted anisotropic Dirac cones at the Fermi level is revealed in the two-dimensional boron-based materials and the low-energy effective models are given. Moreover, akin to three-dimensional Weyl semimetal, the topological property of these cat's cradle-like Dirac semimetals can be verified by the calculation of quantized Berry phase and the demonstration of flat Fermi-arc edge state connecting two Dirac points as well. Our finding that borophene and borophane are cat's cradle-like Dirac semimetals is of great interest for experiment and possible applications in the future.

Almost ideal nodal-loop semimetal in monoclinic CuTeO$_3$ material

Nodal-loop semimetals are materials in which the conduction and valence bands cross on a one-dimensional loop in the reciprocal space. For the nodal-loop character to manifest in physical properties, it is desired that the loop is close to the Fermi level, relatively flat in energy, simple in its shape, and not coexisting with other extraneous bands. Here, based on the first-principles calculations, we show that the monoclinic CuTeO$_3$ is a realistic nodal-loop semimetal that satisfies all these requirements. The material features only a single nodal loop around the Fermi level, protected by either of the two independent symmetries: the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and the glide mirror symmetry. The size of the loop can be effectively tuned by strain, and the loop can even be annihilated under stain, making a topological phase transition to a trivial insulator phase. Including the spin-orbit coupling opens a tiny gap at the loop, and the system becomes a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological semimetal with a nontrivial bulk $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant but no global bandgap. The corresponding topological surface states have been identified. We also construct a low-energy effective model to describe the nodal loop and the effect of spin-orbit coupling.

Hourglass-like Nodal Net Semimetal in Ag2BiO3

Based on first-principles calculation and analysis of crystal symmetries, we propose a kind of hourglass-like nodal net (HNN) semimetal in centrosymmetric Ag2BiO3 that is constructed by two hourglass-like nodal chains (HNCs) at mutually orthogonal planes in the extended Brillouin zone (BZ) when the weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC) mainly from the 6s orbital of Bi atoms is ignored. The joint point in the nodal net structure is a special double Dirac point located at the BZ corner. Different from previous HNN [Bzdusek et al., Nature 538, 75 (2016)] where the SOC and double groups nonsymmorphic symmetries are necessary, and also different from the accidental nodal net, this HNN structure is inevitably formed and guaranteed by spinless nonsymmorphic symmetries, and thus robust against any symmetry-remaining perturbations. The Fermi surface in Ag2BiO3 consisting of a torus-like electron pocket and a torus-like hole pocket may lead to unusual transport properties. A simple four-band tight-binding model is built to reproduce the HNN structure. For a semi-infinite Ag2BiO3 , the "drumhead" like surface states with nearly flat dispersions are demonstrated on (001) and (100) surfaces, respectively. If such weak SOC effect is taken into consideration, this HNN structure will be slightly broken, left a pair of hourglass-like Dirac points at the two-fold screw axis. This type of hourglass-like Dirac semimetal is symmetry-enforced and does not need band inversion anymore. Our discovery provides a new platform to study novel topological semimetal states from nonsymmorphic symmetries.

Mirror Protected Multiple Nodal Line Semimetals and Material Realization

The conventional k.p method fails to capture the full and essential physics of many symmetry enriched multiple nodal line structures in the three dimensional Brillouin zone. Here we present a new and systematical method to construct the effective lattice model of mirror symmetry protected three-dimensional multiple nodal line semimetals, when the spin-orbit interaction is ignored. For systems with a given pair of perpendicular nodal rings, we obtain all the effective lattice models and eleven inequivalent nodal line Fermi surfaces together with their related constraints. By means of first-principles calculations, we first propose a family of real materials, beta phase of ternary nitrides X2GeN2 (X = Ca; Sr; Ba), that support one kind of these novel Fermi surfaces. Therefore, our work deepens the understanding of the nodal line structures and promotes the experimental progress of topological nodal line semimetals.

Experimental observation of node-line-like surface states in LaBi

In a Dirac nodal line semimetal, the bulk conduction and valence bands touch at extended lines in the Brillouin zone. To date, most of the theoretically predicted and experimentally discovered nodal lines derive from the bulk bands of two- and three-dimensional materials. Here, based on combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, we report the discovery of node-line-like surface states on the (001) surface of LaBi. These bands derive from the topological surface states of LaBi and bridge the band gap opened by spin-orbit coupling and band inversion. Our first-principles calculations reveal that these "nodal lines" have a tiny gap, which is beyond typical experimental resolution. These results may provide important information to understand the extraordinary physical properties of LaBi, such as the extremely large magnetoresistance and resistivity plateau.

Tunable Half-metallic Magnetism in Atom-thin Holey Two-dimensional C$_2$N Monolayer

Exploring two-dimensional (2D) materials with magnetic ordering is a focus of current research. It remains a challenge to achieve tunable magnetism in a material of one-atom-thickness without introducing extrinsic magnetic atoms or defects. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose that tunable ferromagnetism can be realized in the recently synthesized holey 2D C$_2$N ($h$2D-C$_2$N) monolayer via purely electron doping that can be readily achieved by gating. We show that owing to the prominent van Hove singularity in the band structure, the material exhibits ferromagnetism even at a small doping level. Remarkably, over a wide doping range of 4$\times$10$^{13}$/cm$^2$ to 8$\times$10$^{13}$/cm$^2$, the system becomes half-metallic, with carriers fully spin-polarized. The estimated Curie temperature can be up to 320 K. Besides gating, we find that the magnetism can also be effectively tuned by lattice strain. Our result identifies $h$2D-C$_2$N as the first material with single-atom-thickness that can host gate-tunable room-temperature half-metallic magnetism, suggesting it as a promising platform to explore nanoscale magnetism and flexible spintronic devices.

Discovery of two-dimensional Dirac nodal line fermions in monolayer Cu2Si

Topological nodal line semimetals, a novel quantum state of materials, possess topologically nontrivial valence and conduction bands that touch at a line near the Fermi level. The exotic band structure can lead to various novel properties, such as long-range Coulomb interaction and flat Landau levels. Recently, topological nodal lines have been observed in several bulk materials, such as PtSn4, ZrSiS, TlTaSe2 and PbTaSe2. However, in two-dimensional materials, experimental research on nodal line fermions is still lacking. Here, we report the discovery of two-dimensional Dirac nodal line fermions in monolayer Cu2Si based on combined theoretical calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. The Dirac nodal lines in Cu2Si form two concentric loops centred around the Γ point and are protected by mirror reflection symmetry. Our results establish Cu2Si as a new platform to study the novel physical properties in two-dimensional Dirac materials and provide new opportunities to realize high-speed low-dissipation devices.

A new kind of 2D topological insulators BiCN with a giant gap and its substrate effects

Based on DFT calculation, we predict that BiCN, i.e., bilayer Bi films passivated with -CN group, is a novel 2D Bi-based material with highly thermodynamic stability, and demonstrate that it is also a new kind of 2D TI with a giant SOC gap (? 1 eV) by direct calculation of the topological invariant Z2 and obvious exhibition of the helical edge states. Monolayer h-BN and MoS2 are identified as good candidate substrates for supporting the nontrivial topological insulating phase of the 2D TI films, since the two substrates can stabilize and weakly interact with BiCN via van derWaals interaction and thus hardly affect the electronic properties, especially the band topology. The topological properties are robust against the strain and electric field. This may provide a promising platform for realization of novel topological phases.

Quantum spin Hall insulators and quantum valley Hall insulators of BiX/SbX (X = H, F, Cl, and Br) monolayers with a record bulk band gap

Large bulk band gap is critical for application of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator or two dimensional (2D) topological insulator (TI) in spintronic device operating at room temperature (RT). Based on the first-principles calculations, here we predict a group of 2D topological insulators BiX/SbX (X = H, F, Cl, and Br) monolayers with extraordinarily large bulk gaps from 0.32 to a record value of 1.08 eV. These giant-gaps are entirely due to the result of strong spin-orbit interaction related to px and py orbitals of Bi/Sb atoms around the two valley K and K' of honeycomb lattice, which is different significantly from the one consisted of pz orbital just like in graphene/silicene. The topological characteristic of BiX/SbX monolayers is confirmed by the calculated nontrivial Z2 index and an explicit construction of the low energy effective Hamiltonian in these systems. We show that the honeycomb structures of BiX monolayers remain stable even at a temperature of 600 K. These features make the giant-gap TIs BiX/SbX monolayers an ideal platform to realize many exotic phenomena and fabricate new quantum devices operating at RT. Furthermore, biased BiX/SbX monolayers become a quantum valley Hall insulator, showing valley-selective circular dichroism.
