Kaon Thresholds and Two-Flavor Chiral Expansions for Hyperons

Two-flavor chiral expansions provide a useful perturbative framework to study hadron properties. Such expansions should exhibit marked improvement over the conventional three-flavor chiral expansion. Although one can theoretically formulate two-flavor theories for the various hyperon multiplets, the nearness of kaon thresholds can seriously undermine the effectiveness of the perturbative expansion in practice. We investigate the importance of virtual kaon thresholds on hyperon properties, specifically their masses and isovector axial charges. Using a three-flavor expansion that includes SU(3) breaking effects, we uncover the underlying expansion parameter governing the description of virtual kaon thresholds. For spin-half hyperons, this expansion parameter is quite small. Consequently virtual kaon contributions are well described in the two-flavor theory by terms analytic in the pion mass-squared. For spin three-half hyperons, however, one is closer to the kaon production threshold, and the expansion parameter is not as small. Breakdown of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory is shown to arise from a pole in the expansion parameter associated with the kaon threshold. Estimating higher-order corrections to the expansion parameter is necessary to ascertain whether the two-flavor theory of spin three-half hyperons remains perturbative. We find that, despite higher-order corrections, there is a useful perturbative expansion for the masses and isovector axial charges of both spin-half and spin three-half hyperons.

Nucleon Magnetic Moments and Electric Polarizabilities

Electromagnetic properties of the nucleon are explored with lattice QCD using a novel technique. Focusing on background electric fields, we show how the electric polarizability can be extracted from nucleon correlation functions. A crucial step concerns addressing contributions from the magnetic moment, which affects the relativistic propagation of nucleons in electric fields. By properly handing these contributions, we can determine both magnetic moments and electric polarizabilities. Lattice results from anisotropic clover lattices are presented. Our method is not limited to the neutron; we show results for the proton as well.

Chiral Lattice Fermions, Minimal Doubling, and the Axial Anomaly

Exact chiral symmetry at finite lattice spacing would preclude the axial anomaly. In order to describe a continuum quantum field theory of Dirac fermions, lattice actions with purported exact chiral symmetry must break the flavor-singlet axial symmetry. We demonstrate that this is indeed the case by using a minimally doubled fermion action. For simplicity we consider the Abelian axial anomaly in two dimensions. At finite lattice spacing and with gauge interactions, the axial anomaly arises from non-conservation of the flavor-singlet current. Similar non-conservation also leads to the axial anomaly in the case of the naive lattice action. For minimally doubled actions, however, fine tuning of the action and axial current is necessary to arrive at the anomaly. Conservation of the flavor non-singlet vector current additionally requires the current to be fine tuned. Finally we determine that the chiral projection of a minimally doubled fermion action can be used to arrive at a lattice theory with an undoubled Dirac fermion possessing the correct anomaly in the continuum limit.

Hyperon Electromagnetic Properties in Two-Flavor Chiral Perturbation Theory

The pion mass dependence of hyperon electromagnetic properties is determined using two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Specifically we compute chiral corrections to the charge radii, magnetic moments, and magnetic radii of the spin one-half hyperons, as well as the charge radii, magnetic moments, magnetic radii, electric quadrupole moments, and quadrupole radii of the spin three-half hyperons. Results for the nucleon and delta are also included. Efficacy of the two-flavor theory is investigated by analyzing the role played by virtual kaons. For the electromagnetic properties of spin one-half hyperons, kaon loop contributions are shown to be well described by terms analytic in the pion mass squared. Similarly kaon contributions to the magnetic moments of spin three-half hyperons are well described in the two-flavor theory. The remaining electromagnetic properties of spin three-half resonances can be described in two-flavor chiral perturbation theory, however, this description fails just beyond the physical pion mass. For the case of experimentally known hyperon magnetic moments and charge radii, we demonstrate that chiral corrections are under reasonable control, in contrast to the behavior of these observables in the three-flavor chiral expansion. The formulae we derive are ideal for performing the pion mass extrapolation of lattice QCD data obtained at the physical strange quark mass.

Extracting Nucleon Magnetic Moments and Electric Polarizabilities from Lattice QCD in Background Electric Fields

Nucleon properties are investigated in background electric fields. As the magnetic moments of baryons affect their relativistic propagation in constant electric fields, electric polarizabilities cannot be determined without knowledge of magnetic moments. This is analogous to the experimental situation, for which determination of polarizabilities from the Compton amplitude requires subtraction of Born terms. With the background field method, we devise combinations of nucleon correlation functions in constant electric fields that isolate magnetic moments and electric polarizabilities. Using an ensemble of anisotropic gauge configurations with dynamical clover fermions, we demonstrate how both observables can be determined from lattice QCD simulations in background electric fields. We obtain results for the neutron and proton, however, our study is currently limited to electrically neutral sea quarks. The value we extract for the nucleon isovector magnetic moment is comparable to those obtained from measuring lattice three-point functions at similar pion masses.

The Relation Between Equal-Time and Light-Front Wave Functions

The relation between equal-time and light-front wave functions is studied using models for which the four-dimensional solution of the Bethe-Salpeter wave function can be obtained. The popular prescription of defining the longitudinal momentum fraction using the instant-form free kinetic energy and third component of momentum is found to be incorrect except in the non-relativistic limit. The only presently known way to obtain light-front wave functions from rest-frame, instant-form wave functions is to boost the latter wave functions to the infinite momentum frame. Despite this fact, we prove a relation between certain integrals of the equal-time and light-front wave functions.

Meson-Baryon Scattering Parameters from Lattice QCD with an Isospin Chemical Potential

The extraction of meson-baryon scattering parameters from lattice QCD is complicated by the necessity, in some channels, of including annihilation diagrams. We consider a strategy to avoid the need for these extremely costly and noisy contributions. The strategy is based on simulations with an isospin chemical potential which, contrary to a baryon chemical potential, has no sign problem. When the isospin chemical potential is larger than a critical value, a charged pion condensate forms. Baryons propagating in the pion condensate will have their masses modified by pion-baryon scattering parameters. Consequently these parameters can be extracted from lattice QCD simulations in an isospin chemical potential, and we detail precisely which low-energy constants using baryon chiral perturbation theory.

Hyperon Axial Charges in Two-Flavor Chiral Perturbation Theory

We use two-flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to investigate the isovector axial charges of the spin one-half hyperons. Expressions for these hyperon axial charges are derived at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. We utilize phenomenological and lattice QCD inputs to assess the convergence of the two-flavor theory, which appears to be best for cascades.

Lattice QCD in Background Fields

Electromagnetic properties of hadrons can be computed by lattice simulations of QCD in background fields. We demonstrate new techniques for the investigation of charged hadron properties in electric fields. Our current calculations employ large electric fields, motivating us to analyze chiral dynamics in strong QED backgrounds, and subsequently uncover surprising non-perturbative effects present at finite volume.

Extracting Electric Polarizabilities from Lattice QCD

Charged and neutral, pion and kaon electric polarizabilities are extracted from lattice QCD using an ensemble of anisotropic gauge configurations with dynamical clover fermions. We utilize classical background fields to access the polarizabilities from two-point correlation functions. Uniform background fields are achieved by quantizing the electric field strength with the proper treatment of boundary flux. These external fields, however, are implemented only in the valence quark sector. A novel method to extract charge particle polarizabilities is successfully demonstrated for the first time.

Volume Effects for Pion Two-Point Functions in Constant Electric and Magnetic Fields

We compute finite volume effects relevant for lattice QCD simulations using background fields. Focusing on constant electric and magnetic fields on a periodic lattice, we determine volume corrections to pion two-point functions using chiral perturbation theory. Among such corrections are the finite volume shifts to the electric and magnetic polarizabilities, which are numerically shown to be non-negligible. We additionally find that all terms in the single-particle effective action can be renormalized by infrared effects. This includes Born couplings to the pion current and total charge-squared, which can be renormalized due to the nature of gauge invariance on a torus.

Hadrons in Strong Electric and Magnetic Fields

We use chiral perturbation theory to investigate hadronic properties in strong electric and magnetic fields. A strong-field power counting is employed, and results for pions and nucleons are obtained using Schwinger's proper-time method. In the limit of weak fields, we accordingly recover the well known one-loop chiral perturbation theory results for the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of pions and nucleons. In strong constant fields, we extend the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation. For the case of electric fields, we find that non-perturbative effects result in hadron decay. For sufficiently strong magnetic fields, the chiral analysis confirms that the nucleon hierarchy becomes inverted giving rise to proton beta-decay. Properties of asymptotic expansions are explored by considering weak field limits. In the regime where the perturbative expansion breaks down, the first-order term gives the best agreement with the non perturbative result.

Hyperons in Two Flavor Chiral Perturbation Theory

We use two-flavor chiral perturbation theory to describe hyperons. We focus on the strangeness conserving sector, and, as an example, calculate hyperon masses. Convergence of this two-flavor chiral expansion for observables is improved over the three-flavor theory. The cost, however, is a larger number of low-energy constants that must be ultimately determined from lattice QCD data. A formula for the mass of the omega baryon is derived to sixth order in this expansion, and will aid lattice practitioners in scale setting or tuning the strange quark mass.

Electric Polarizabilities from Lattice QCD

The response of hadrons to electromagnetic probes is highly constrained by chiral dynamics; but, in some cases, predictions have not compared well with experimental data. The lattice can be used to test the chiral electromagnetism of hadrons and ultimately confront experiment. We use background field techniques to study the electromagnetic polarizabilities of hadrons. Focusing on simulations in background electric fields, we present preliminary results for both charged and neutral particle polarizabilities. The former are extracted using a novel method.

Flavor Twisted Boundary Conditions in the Breit Frame

We use a generalization of chiral perturbation theory to account for the effects of flavor twisted boundary conditions in the Breit frame. The relevant framework for two light flavors is an SU(6|4) partially quenched theory, where the extra valence quarks differ only by their boundary conditions. Focusing on the pion electromagnetic form factor, finite volume corrections are calculated at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion and are estimated to be small on current lattices.

Broken Symmetries from Minimally Doubled Fermions

Novel chirally symmetric fermion actions containing the minimum amount of fermion doubling have been recently proposed in the literature. We study the symmetries and renormalization of these actions and find that in each case, discrete symmetries, such as parity and time-reversal, are explicitly broken. Consequently, when the gauge interactions are included, these theories radiatively generate relevant and marginal operators. Thus the restoration of these symmetries and the approach to the continuum limit require the fine-tuning of several parameters. With some assumptions, we show that this behavior is unavoidable for actions displaying minimal fermion doubling.

Search for Fermion Actions on Hyperdiamond Lattices

Fermions moving in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice (graphene) have, at low energies, chiral symmetry. Generalizing this construction to four dimensions potentially provides fermions with chiral symmetry and only the minimal fermion doubling demanded by the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem. The practical usefulness of such fermions hinges on whether the action has a necessary set of discrete symmetries of the lattice. If this is the case, one avoids the generation of dimension three and four operators which require fine tuning. We construct hyperdiamond lattice actions with enough symmetries to exclude fine tuning; however, they produce multiple doublings. The limit where the actions exhibit minimal doubling does not possess the requisite symmetry.
