Chiral Corrections and the Axial Charge of the Delta

Chiral corrections to the delta axial charge are determined using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Knowledge of this axial coupling is necessary to assess virtual-delta contributions to nucleon and delta observables. We give isospin relations useful for a lattice determination of the axial coupling. Furthermore we detail partially quenched chiral corrections, which are relevant to address partial quenching and/or mixed action errors in lattice calculations of the delta axial charge.

Chiral Corrections to Hyperon Axial Form Factors

We study the complete set of flavor changing hyperon axial current matrix elements at small momentum transfer. Using partially quenched heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, we derive the chiral and momentum behavior of the axial and induced pseudoscalar form factors. The meson pole contributions to the latter posses a striking signal for chiral physics. We argue that the study of hyperon axial matrix elements enables a systematic lattice investigation of the efficacy of three flavor chiral expansions in the baryon sector. This can be achieved by considering chiral corrections to SU(3) symmetry predictions, and their partially quenched generalizations. In particular, despite the presence of eight unknown low-energy constants, we are able to make next-to-leading order symmetry breaking predictions for two linear combinations of axial charges.

Pion Polarizabilities and Volume Effects in Lattice QCD

We use chiral perturbation theory to study the extraction of pion electromagnetic polarizabilities from lattice QCD. Chiral extrapolation formulae are derived for partially quenched QCD, and quenched QCD simulations. On a torus, volume dependence of electromagnetic observables is complicated by SO(4) breaking, as well as photon zero-mode interactions. We determine finite volume corrections to the Compton scattering tensor of pions. We argue, however, that such results cannot be used to ascertain volume corrections to polarizabilities determined in lattice QCD with background field methods. Connection is lacking because momentum expansions are not permitted in finite volume. Our argument also applies to form factors. Volume effects for electromagnetic moments cannot be deduced from finite volume form factors.

Current Renormalization in Finite Volume

For finite volume field theories with discrete translational invariance, conserved currents can be additively renormalized by infrared effects. We demonstrate this for pions using chiral perturbation theory coupled to electromagnetism in a periodic box. Gauge invariant single particle effective theories are constructed to explain these results. In such theories, current renormalization arises from operators involving the zero mode of the gauge field. No contradictions with Ward identities, or low-energy theorems are encountered.

Doubly Heavy Baryons and Quark-Diquark Symmetry in Quenched and Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory

We extend the chiral Lagrangian with heavy quark-diquark symmetry to quenched and partially quenched theories. These theories are used to derive formulae for the chiral extrapolation of masses and hyperfine splittings of doubly heavy baryons in lattice QCD simulations. A quark-diquark symmetry prediction for the hyperfine splittings of heavy mesons and doubly heavy baryons is rather insensitive to chiral corrections in both quenched and partially quenched QCD. Extrapolation formulae for the doubly heavy baryon electromagnetic transition moments are also determined for the partially quenched theory.

Flavor Twisted Boundary Conditions and Isovector Form Factors

We use vector flavor symmetry to relate form factors of isospin changing operators to isovector form factors. Flavor twisted boundary conditions in lattice QCD thus allow isovector form factors of twist-two operators, e.g, to be computed at continuous values of the momentum transfer. These twisted boundary conditions, moreover, are implemented only in the valence sector. Effects of the finite volume must be addressed to extract isovector moments and radii at zero lattice momentum. As an example, we use chiral perturbation theory to assess the volume effects in extracting the isovector magnetic moment of the nucleon from simulations with twisted boundary conditions.

Baryons with Ginsparg-Wilson quarks in a staggered sea

We determine the masses and magnetic moments of the octet baryons in chiral perturbation theory formulated for a mixed lattice action of Ginsparg-Wilson valence quarks and staggered sea quarks. Taste-symmetry breaking does not occur at next-to-leading order in the combined lattice-spacing and chiral expansion. Expressions derived for masses and magnetic moments are required for addressing lattice artifacts in mixed-action simulations of these observables.

Strong Isospin Breaking in the Nucleon and Delta Masses on the Lattice

Strong isospin breaking in the spectrum of the nucleons and deltas can be studied in lattice QCD with the help of chiral perturbation theory. At leading order in the chiral expansion, the mass splittings between the proton and neutron and between the deltas are linear in the quark mass difference. The next-to-leading order contributions to these splittings vanish even away from the strong-isospin limit. Therefore, any non-linear quark mass dependence of these mass splittings is a signal of the next-to-next-to-leading order mass contributions, thus providing access to LECs at this order. We determine the mass splittings of the nucleons and deltas in two-flavor, heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to next-to-next-to-leading order. We also derive expressions for the nucleon and delta masses in partially quenched chiral perturbation theory to the same order. The resulting mass expressions will be useful both for the extrapolation of lattice data on baryon masses, and for the study of strong isospin breaking.

Flavor Twisted Boundary Conditions and the Nucleon Axial Current

With twisted boundary conditions on the quark fields, we study nucleon matrix elements of the axial current utilizing twisted heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. One can explore the momentum transfer dependence of the axial form factors more easily than by using ordinary lattice quantized momenta alone. As examples, we derive expressions for the nucleon axial radius and pseudoscalar form factor.

Quarks with Twisted Boundary Conditions in the Epsilon Regime

We study the effects of twisted boundary conditions on the quark fields in the epsilon regime of chiral perturbation theory. We consider the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ chiral theory with non-degenerate quarks and the $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ chiral theory with massless up and down quarks and massive strange quarks. The partition function and condensate are derived for each theory. Because flavor-neutral Goldstone bosons are unaffected by twisted boundary conditions chiral symmetry is still restored in finite volumes. The dependence of the condensate on the twisting parameters can be used to extract the pion decay constant from simulations in the epsilon regime. The relative contribution to the partition function from sectors of different topological charge is numerically insensitive to twisted boundary conditions.

Baryon masses at O(a^2) in chiral perturbation theory

The chiral Lagrangian for the Symanzik action through O(a^2) for baryons is obtained. We consider two flavor unquenched and partially quenched lattice theories, allowing for mixed actions in the latter. As an application, we calculate masses to O(a^2) for the nucleons and deltas, and investigate the corrections due to the violation of O(4) rotational invariance. These results are contrasted with those in the meson sector for lattice simulations using mixed and unmixed actions of Wilson and Ginsparg-Wilson quarks.

We use partially-quenched charge matrices that are easy to implement on the lattice. Hadronic Electromagnetic Properties at Finite Lattice Spacing

Electromagnetic properties of the octet mesons as well as the octet and decuplet baryons are augmented in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory to include O(a) corrections due to lattice discretization. We present the results for the SU(3) flavor group in the isospin limit as well as the results for SU(2) flavor with non-degenerate quarks. These corrections will be useful for extrapolation of lattice calculations using Wilson valence and sea quarks, as well as calculations using Wilson sea quarks and Ginsparg-Wilson valence quarks.

Electromagnetic Properties of the Baryon Decuplet in Quenched and Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory

We calculate electromagnetic properties of the decuplet baryons in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, leading order in the heavy baryon expansion, and obtain expressions for the magnetic moments, charge radii, and electric quadrupole moments. The quenched calculation is shown to be pathological since only quenched chiral singularities are present at this order. We present the partially quenched results for both the SU(2) and SU(3) flavor groups and use the isospin limit in the latter. These results are necessary for proper extrapolation of lattice calculations of decuplet electromagnetic properties.
