Photometric, kinematic and variability study in the young open cluster NGC 1960

We present a comprehensive photometric analysis of a young open cluster NGC 1960 (M36) along with the long-term variability study of this cluster. Based on the kinematic data of Gaia DR2, the membership probabilities of 3871 stars are ascertained in the cluster field among which 262 stars are found to be cluster members. Considering the kinematic and trigonometric measurements of the cluster members, we estimate a mean cluster parallax of 0.86+/-0.05 mas and mean proper motions of mu_RA = -0.143+/-0.008 mas/yr, mu_Dec = -3.395+/-0.008 mas/yr. We obtain basic parameters of the cluster such as E(B-V) = 0.24+/-0.02 mag, log(Age/yr)=7.44+/-0.02, and distance = 1.17+/-0.06 kpc. The mass function slope in the cluster for the stars in the mass range of 0.72-7.32 M_solar is found to be γ= -1.26+/-0.19. We find that mass segregation is still taking place in the cluster which is yet to be dynamically relaxed. This work also presents first high-precision variability survey in the central 13'x13' among which 72 are periodic variables. Among them, 59 are short-period (P<1 day)and 13 are long-period (P>1 day). The variable stars have V magnitudes ranging between 9.1 to 19.4 mag and periods between 41 minutes to 10.74 days. On the basis of their locations in the H-R diagram, periods and characteristic light curves, the 20 periodic variables belong to the cluster. We classified them as 2 delta-Scuti, 3 gamma-Dor, 2 slowly pulsating B stars, 5 rotational variables, 2 non-pulsating B stars and 6 as miscellaneous variables.

Flash ionization signatures in the type Ibn supernova SN 2019uo

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the type Ibn supernova (SN) 2019uo, the second ever SN Ibn with flash ionization (He II, C III, N III) features in its early spectra. SN 2019uo displays a rapid post-peak luminosity decline of 0.1 mag d$^{-1}$ similar to most of the SNe Ibn, but is fainter ($M^V_{max} = -18.30 \pm 0.24$ mag) than a typical SN Ibn and shows a color evolution that places it between SNe Ib and the most extreme SNe Ibn. SN 2019uo shows P-cygni He I features in the early spectra which gradually evolves and becomes emission dominated post peak. It also shows faster evolution in line velocities as compared to most other members of the type Ibn subclass. The bolometric light curve is fairly described by a $^{56}$Ni + circumstellar interaction model.

SN 2015an: a normal luminosity type II supernova with low expansion velocity at early phases

We present the photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2015an, a Type II Supernova (SN) in IC 2367. The recombination phase of the SN lasts up to $\sim$120 d, with a decline rate of 1.24 mag/100d, higher than the typical SNe IIP. The SN exhibits bluer colours than most SNe II, indicating higher ejecta temperatures. The absolute $V$-band magnitude of SN 2015an at 50 d is $-$16.83$\pm$0.04 mag, pretty typical for SNe II. However, the $^{56}$Ni mass yield, estimated from the tail $V$-band light curve to be 0.021$\pm$0.010 M$_\odot$, is comparatively low. The spectral properties of SN 2015an are atypical, with low H$α$ expansion velocity and presence of high velocity component of H$α$ at early phases. Moreover, the continuum exhibits excess blue flux up to $\sim$50 d, which is interpreted as a progenitor metallicity effect. The high velocity feature indicates ejecta-circumstellar material interaction at early phases. The semi-analytical modelling of the bolometric light curve yields a total ejected mass of $\sim$12 M$_\odot$, a pre-supernova radius of $\sim$388~R$_\odot$ and explosion energy of $\sim$1.8 foe.

The 3.6 meter Devasthal Optical Telescope: From inception to realisation

India's largest size 3.6 meter Devashal optical telescope (DOT) was commissioned in the year 2016, though the idea of building it germinated way back in the year 1976. This article provides research accounts as well as glimpses of its nearly four decades of journey. After a decade of site surveys, location of Devasthal in central Himalyan region of Kumaon was identified. Thereafter, a detailed site characterization was conducted and project approvals were obtained. The telescope is designed to be a technologically advanced optical astronomy instrument. It has been demonstrated to resolve a binary star having angular separation of 0.4 arc-sec. After the technical activation of the telescope on March 30, 2016, it has been in regular use for testing various back-end instruments as well as for optical and near-infrared observations of celestial objects. Back-end instruments used for these observations are 4KX4K CCD imager, Faint object imager cum spectrograph and TIFR near-infrared camera-II. A few published science results based on the observations taken with the telescope are also presented. Furthermore, the routine observations find that for a good fraction of observing time the telescope provides sky images of sub-arc-second resolution at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. This indicates that the extreme care taken in the design and construction of the telescope dome building has been rewarding since the as-built thermal mass contributes minimally so as not to degrade the natural atmospheric seeing measured at Devasthal about two decades ago during 1997-1999 using differential image motion monitor. The overall on-site performance of the telescope is found to be excellent and at par with the performance of other similar telescopes located over the globe.

Inversion and magnetic quantum oscillations in symmetric periodic Anderson model

We study the symmetric periodic Anderson model of the conduction electrons hybridized with the localized correlated electrons on square lattice. Using the canonical representation of electrons by Kumar, we do a self-consistent theory of its effective charge and spin dynamics, which produces an insulating ground state that undergoes continuous transition from the Kondo singlet to Néel antiferromagnetic phase with decreasing hybridization, and uncovers two inversion transitions for the charge quasiparticles. With suitably inverted quasiparticle bands for moderate to weaker effective Kondo couplings, this effective charge dynamics in the magnetic field coupled to electronic motion produces magnetic quantum oscillations with frequency corresponding to the half Brillouin zone.

Scientific potential of the Indo-Belgian 3.6-m DOT in the field of Galactic Astronomy

India and Belgium have jointly established two 4 meter class optical telescopes at Devasthal located in Nainital, India. After successful installation of the 3.6-m modern new technology Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT) in 2015, it was technically activated by premiers of both countries from Brussels on March 30, 2016. Since then, the 3.6-m DOT has been used for both optical and near-Infrared (NIR) observations for a number of research proposals. The best angular resolution achieved is 0\farcsec4 indicating that the optics of the 3.6-m DOT is good and capable of providing images of the celestial bodies with sub-arc-second resolution. The observations provide proof that the care taken in the construction of the telescope dome building has paid a rich dividend as their thermal mass is so low that it has not degraded the natural atmospheric seeing at Devasthal measured about two decades ago during 1997 to 1999 using differential image motion monitor. A few preliminary scientific results obtained from recent observations are presented along with performance and global potential of the 3.6-m DOT in the field of galactic astronomy. The 3.6-m DOT is capable of providing internationally competitive science once high resolution spectrograph and other planned modern back-end instruments become operational. Geographical location of the observatory has global importance for the time domain and multi-wavelength astrophysical studies.

VR CCD photometry of variable stars in globular cluster NGC 4147

We present results of a search for variable stars in a region of the globular cluster NGC 4147 based on photometric observations with 4k x 4k CCD imager mounted at the axial port of the recently installed 3.6 m Devasthal optical telescope at Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, Nainital, India. We performed time series photometry of NGC 4147 in V and R bands, and identified 42 periodic variables in the region of NGC 4147, 28 of which have been detected for the first time. Seventeen variable stars are located within the half light radius $\lesssim$ 0.48 arcmin, of which 10 stars are newly identified variables. Two of 10 variables are located within the core radius $\lesssim$ 0.09 arcmin. Based on the location in the $V/(V-R)$ colour magnitude diagram and variability characteristics, 7, 8, 5 and 1 newly identified probable member variables are classified as RRc, EA/E, EW and SX Phe, respectively. The metallicity of NGC 4147 estimated from light curves of RRab and RRc stars with the help of Fourier decomposition is found to be characteristics of Oosterhoff II. The distance derived using light curves of RRab stars is consistent with that obtained from the observed $V/(V-R)$ colour-magnitude diagram.

SN 2016B a.k.a ASASSN-16ab: a transitional type II supernova

We present photometry, polarimetry and spectroscopy of the Type II supernova ASASSN-16ab/SN 2016B in PGC 037392. The photometric and spectroscopic follow-up commenced about two weeks after shock breakout and continued until nearly six months. The light curve of SN 2016B exhibits intermediate properties between those of Type IIP and IIL. The early decline is steep (1.68 $\pm$ 0.10 mag 100 d$^{-1}$), followed by a shallower plateau phase (0.47 $\pm$ 0.24 mag 100 d$^{-1}$). The optically thick phase lasts for 118 d, similar to Type IIP. The $^{56}$Ni mass estimated from the radioactive tail of the bolometric light curve is 0.082 $\pm$ 0.019 M$_\odot$. High velocity component contributing to the absorption trough of H$α$ and H$β$ in the photospheric spectra are identified from the spectral modelling from about 57 - 97 d after the outburst, suggesting a possible SN ejecta and circumstellar material interaction. Such high velocity features are common in the spectra of Type IIL supernovae. By modelling the true bolometric light curve of SN 2016B, we estimated a total ejected mass of $\sim$15 M$_\odot$, kinetic energy of $\sim$1.4 foe and an initial radius of $\sim$400 R$_\odot$.

Observational properties of a Type Ib Supernova MASTER OT J120451.50+265946.6 in NGC 4080

MASTER OT J120451.50+265946.6 (M12045), discovered by the MASTER Global Robotic Net, is a Type Ib supernova (SN) that exploded in NGC 4080. We present the {\it BVRI} photometric and spectroscopic observations upto $\sim$250 days since $B_{max}$. At the time of discovery the SN was a few weeks past maximum light and our observations capture the linearly declining light curve phase. M12045 declines faster as compared to SNe 1999dn and 2009jf at comparable epochs. Rigorous spectroscopic monitoring reveals that M12045 is a normal Type Ib SN. The analysis of the nebular phase spectra indicates that $\sim$ 0.90 M$_\odot$ of O is ejected in the explosion. The line ratio of [\ion{O}{I}] and [\ion{Ca}{II}] in the nebular phase supports a massive WR progenitor with main sequence mass of $\sim$ 20 M$_\odot$.

SN 2015ba: A type IIP supernova with a long plateau

We present optical photometry and spectroscopy from about a week after explosion to $\sim$272 d of an atypical Type IIP supernova, SN 2015ba, which exploded in the edge-on galaxy IC 1029. SN 2015ba is a luminous event with an absolute V-band magnitude of -17.1$\pm$0.2 mag at 50 d since explosion and has a long plateau lasting for $\sim$123 d. The distance to the SN is estimated to be 34.8$\pm$0.7 Mpc using the expanding photosphere and standard candle methods. High-velocity H-Balmer components constant with time are observed in the late-plateau phase spectra of SN 2015ba, which suggests a possible role of circumstellar interaction at these phases. Both hydrodynamical and analytical modelling suggest a massive progenitor of SN 2015ba with a pre-explosion mass of 24-26 M$_\odot$. However, the nebular spectra of SN 2015ba exhibit insignificant levels of oxygen, which is otherwise expected from a massive progenitor. This might be suggestive of the non-monotonical link between O-core masses and the zero-age main-sequence mass of pre-supernova stars and/or uncertainties in the mixing scenario in the ejecta of supernovae.

SN 2015as: A low luminosity Type IIb supernova without an early light curve peak

We present results of the photometric (from 3 to 509 days past explosion) and spectroscopic (up to 230 days past explosion) monitoring campaign of the He-rich Type IIb supernova (SN) 2015as. The {\it (B-V)} colour evolution of SN 2015as closely resemble those of SN 2008ax, suggesting that SN 2015as belongs to the SN IIb subgroup that does not show the early, short-duration photometric peak. The light curve of SN 2015as reaches the $B$-band maximum about 22 days after the explosion, at an absolute magnitude of -16.82 $\pm$ 0.18 mag. At $\sim$ 75 days after the explosion, its spectrum transitions from that of a SN II to a SN Ib. P~Cygni features due to He I lines appear at around 30 days after explosion, indicating that the progenitor of SN 2015as was partially stripped. For SN~2015as, we estimate a $^{56}$Ni mass of $\sim$ 0.08 M$_{\odot}$ and ejecta mass of 1.1--2.2 M$_{\odot}$, which are similar to the values inferred for SN 2008ax. The quasi bolometric analytical light curve modelling suggests that the progenitor of SN 2015as has a modest mass ($\sim$ 0.1 M$_{\odot}$), a nearly-compact ($\sim$ 0.05$\times$10$^{13}$ cm) H envelope on top of a dense, compact ($\sim$ 2$\times$10$^{11}$ cm) and a more massive ($\sim$ 1.2 M$_{\odot}$) He core. The analysis of the nebular phase spectra indicates that $\sim$ 0.44 M$_{\odot}$ of O is ejected in the explosion. The intensity ratio of the [Ca II]/[O I] nebular lines favours either a main sequence progenitor mass of $\sim$ 15 M$_{\odot}$ or a Wolf Rayet star of 20 M$_{\odot}$.

TIFR Near Infrared Imaging Camera-II on the 3.6-m Devasthal Optical Telescope

TIFR Near Infrared Imaging Camera-II is a closed-cycle Helium cryo-cooled imaging camera equipped with a Raytheon 512 x 512 pixels InSb Aladdin III Quadrant focal plane array having sensitivity to photons in the 1-5 microns wavelength band. In this paper, we present the performance of the camera on the newly installed 3.6-m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT) based on the calibration observations carried out during 2017 May 11-14 and 2017 October 7-31. After the preliminary characterization, the camera has been released to the Indian and Belgian astronomical community for science observations since 2017 May. The camera offers a field-of-view of ~86.5 arcsec x 86.5 arcsec on the DOT with a pixel scale of 0.169 arcsec. The seeing at the telescope site in the near-infrared bands is typically sub-arcsecond with the best seeing of ~0.45 arcsec realized in the near-infrared K-band on 2017 October 16. The camera is found to be capable of deep observations in the J, H and K bands comparable to other 4-m class telescopes available world-wide. Another highlight of this camera is the observational capability for sources up to Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) W1-band (3.4 microns) magnitudes of 9.2 in the narrow L-band (nbL; lambda_{cen} ~3.59 microns). Hence, the camera could be a good complementary instrument to observe the bright nbL-band sources that are saturated in the Spitzer-Infrared Array Camera ([3.6] <= 7.92 mag) and the WISE W1-band ([3.4] <= 8.1 mag). Sources with strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at 3.3 microns are also detected. Details of the observations and estimated parameters are presented in this paper.

Spontaneous dimerization and moment formation in the Hida model of spin-1 kagomé antiferromagnet

The Hida model, defined on honeycomb lattice, is a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model of aniferromagnetic hexagons (with nearest-neighbor interaction, $J_A>0$) coupled via ferromagnetic bonds (with exchange interaction, $J_F <0$). It applies to the spin-gapped organic materials, m-MPYNN.X (for $\mathrm{X}=$I, BF4, ClO4), and for $|J_F|\gg J_A$, it reduces to the spin-$1$ kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHA). Motivated by the recent finding of trimerized singlet (TS) ground state for spin-1 KHA, we investigate the evolution of the ground state of Hida model from weak to strong $J_F/J_A$ using mean-field triplon analysis and Schwinger boson mean-field theory. Our triplon analysis of Hida model shows that its uniform hexagonal singlet (HS) ground state (for weak $J_F/J_A$) gives way to the dimerized hexagonal singlet (D-HS) ground state for all $J_F$'s beyond a moderate $J_F/J_A$. From the Schwinger boson calculations, we find that the evolution from the uniform HS phase for spin-1/2 Hida model to the TS phase for spin-1 KHA happens through two quantum phase transitions: 1) the spontaneous dimerization transition at $J_F/J_A \sim -0.28$ from the uniform HS to D-HS phase, and 2) the moment formation transition at $J_F/J_A \sim -1.46$, across which the pair of spin-1/2's on every FM bond begin to express as a bound moment that tends to spin-1 for large negative $J_F$'s. The TS ground state of spin-1 KHA is thus adiabatically connected to the D-HS ground state of the Hida model. Our calculations clearly imply that the \ce{m-MPYNN.X} salts realize the D-HS phase at low temperatures, which can be ascertained through neutron diffraction.

Triplon mean-field analysis of an antiferromagnet with degenerate Shastry-Sutherland ground states

We look into the quantum phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnet on the square lattice with degenerate Shastry-Sutherland ground states, for which only a schematic phase diagram is known so far. Many exotic phases were proposed in the schematic phase diagram by the use of exact diagonalization on very small system sizes. In our present work, an important extension of this antiferromagnet is introduced and investigated in the thermodynamic limit using triplon mean-field theory. Remarkably, this antiferromagnet shows a stable plaquette spin-gapped phase like the original Shastry-Sutherland antiferromagnet, although both of these antiferromagnets differ in the Hamiltonian construction and ground state degeneracy. We propose a sublattice columnar dimer phase which is stabilized by the second and third neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange interactions. There are also some commensurate and incommensurate magnetically ordered phases, and other spin-gapped phases which find their places in the quantum phase diagram. Mean-field results suggest that there is always a level-crossing phase transition between two spin gapped phases, whereas in other situations, either a level-crossing or a continuous phase transition happens.

Exploring the optical behaviour of a type Iax supernova SN 2014dt

We present optical photometric (upto $\sim$410 days since $B$$_{max}$) and spectroscopic (upto $\sim$157 days since $B$$_{max}$) observations of a Type Iax supernova (SN) 2014dt located in M61. SN 2014dt is one of the brightest and closest (D $\sim$ 20 Mpc) discovered Type Iax SN. SN 2014dt best matches the light curve evolution of SN 2005hk and reaches a peak magnitude of $M$$_B$ $\sim$-18.13$\pm$0.04 mag with $Δm_{15}$ $\sim$1.35$\pm 0.06$ mag. The early spectra of SN 2014dt are similar to other Type Iax SNe, whereas the nebular spectrum at 157 days is dominated by narrow emission features with less blending as compared to SNe 2008ge and 2012Z. The ejecta velocities are between 5000 to 1000 km sec$^{-1}$ which also confirms the low energy budget of Type Iax SN 2014dt as compared to normal Type Ia SNe. Using the peak bolometric luminosity of SN 2005hk we estimate $^{56}$Ni mass of $\sim$0.14 M$_{\odot}$ and the striking similarity between SN 2014dt and SN 2005hk implies that a comparable amount of $^{56}$Ni would have been synthesized in the explosion of SN 2014dt.

Scientific capabilities and advantages of the 3.6 meter optical telescope at Devasthal, Uttarakhand

India's largest 3.6 m aperture optical telescope has been successfully installed in the central Himalayan region at Devasthal, Nainital district, Uttarakhand. The primary mirror of the telescope uses the active optics technology. The back-end instruments, enabling spectroscopic and photometric imaging of the celestial sky are designed and developed by ARIES along with other Indian institutes. The Devasthal optical telescope in synergy with two other highly sensitive telescopes in the country, namely GMRT operating in the radio wavebands and AstroSat operating in the high-energy X-ray, ultraviolet and visual wavebands, will enable Indian astronomers to carry out scientific studies in several challenging areas of astronomy and astrophysics.

Plaquette-triplon analysis of magnetic disorder and order in a trimerized spin-1 Kagomé antiferromagnet

A spin-1 Heisenberg model on trimerized Kagomé lattice is studied by doing a low-energy bosonic theory in terms of plaquette-triplons defined on its triangular unit-cells. The model has an intra-triangle antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, $J$ (set to 1), and two inter-triangle couplings, $J^\prime>0$ (nearest-neighbor) and $J^{\prime\prime}$ (next-nearest-neighbor; of both signs). The triplon analysis of this model studies the stability of the trimerized singlet (TS) ground state in the $J^\prime$-$J^{\prime\prime}$ plane. It gives a quantum phase diagram that has two gapless antiferromagnetically (AF) ordered phases separated by the spin-gapped TS phase. The TS ground state is found to be stable on $J^{\prime\prime}=0$ line (the nearest-neighbor case), and on both sides of it for $J^{\prime\prime}\neq 0$, in an extended region bounded by the critical lines of transition to the gapless AF phases. The gapless phase in the negative $J^{\prime\prime}$ region has a $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ coplanar $120^\circ$-AF order, with all the moments of equal length and relative angles of $120^\circ$. The other AF phase, in the positive $J^{\prime\prime}$ region, is found to exhibit a different coplanar order with ordering wave vector ${\bf q}=(0,0)$. Here, two magnetic moments in a triangle are of same magnitude, but shorter than the third. While the angle between the two short moments is $120^\circ-2δ$, it is $120^\circ+δ$ between a short and the long one. Only when $J^{\prime\prime}=J^\prime$, their magnitudes become equal and the relative-angles $120^\circ$. This ${\bf q}=(0,0)$ phase has the translational symmetry of the Kagomé lattice with isosceles triangular unit-cells. The ratio of the intensities of certain Bragg peaks, $I_{(1,0)}/I_{(0,1)} = 4\sin^2{(\fracπ{6}+δ)}$, presents an experimental measure of the deviation, $δ$, from the $120^\circ$ order.

Theory of Quantum Oscillations of Magnetization in Kondo Insulators

The Kondo lattice model of spin-1/2 local moments coupled to the conduction electrons at half-filling is studied for its orbital response to magnetic field on bipartite lattices. Through an effective charge dynamics, in a canonical representation of electrons that appropriately describes the Kondo insulating ground state, the magnetization is found to show de Haas-van Alphen oscillations from intermediate to weak Kondo coupling. These oscillations are ascribed to Lifshitz-like inversion of a dispersion of the gapped quasiparticles, whose chemical potential surface is measured by the oscillation frequency. Such oscillations are also predicted to occur in spin-density wave insulators.
