Interplay of plasmonics and strain for Hexagonal Boron Nitride emission engineering

In the realm of quantum information and sensing, there has been substantial interest in the single-photon emission associated with defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). With the goal of producing deterministic emission centers, in this work, we present a platform for engineering emission in hBN integrated with gold truncated nanocone structures. Our findings highlights that, the activation of emission is due to the truncated gold nanocones. Furthermore, we measure the quantum characteristics of this emission and find that while our system demonstrates support for single-photon emission, the origin of this emission remains ambiguous. Specifically, it is unclear whether the emission arises from defects generated by the induced strain or from alternative defect mechanisms. This uncertainty stems from the fluorescence properties inherent to gold, complicating our definitive attribution of the quantum emission source. To provide a rigorous theoretical foundation, we elucidate the effects of strain via the Kirchhoff-Love theory. Additionally, the enhancements observed due to plasmonic effects are comprehensively explained through the resolution of Maxwell's equations. This study will be useful for the development of deterministic and tunable single photonic sources in two dimensional materials and their integration with plasmonic platforms.

Emission engineering in monolithically integrated silicon nitride microring resonators

Monolithic integration of solid-state color centers with photonic elements of the same material is a promising approach to overcome the constraints of fabrication complexity and coupling losses in traditional hybrid integration approaches. A wide band-gap, low-loss silicon nitride (SiN) platform is a mature technology, having CMOS compatibility, widely used in hybrid integrated photonics and optoelectronics. However, it has been shown that certain growth conditions enable the SiN material to host color centers, whose origin is currently under investigation. In this work, we have engineered a novel technique for the efficient coupling of these intrinsic emitters into the whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of the SiN microring cavity -- which has not been explored previously. We have engineered a subwavelength-sized notch into the rim of the SiN microring structure, to optimize the collection efficiency of the cavity-coupled enhanced photoluminescence (PL) spectra at room temperature. The platform presented in this work will enable the development of monolithic integration of color centers with nanophotonic elements for application to quantum photonic technologies.

Exceptional point sensing via energy loss profile in a non-Hermitian system

The heightened sensitivity observed in non-Hermitian systems at exceptional points (EPs) has garnered significant attention. Typical EP sensor implementations rely on precise measurements of spectra and importantly, for real time sensing measurements, the EP condition ceases to hold as the perturbation increases over time, thereby preventing the use of high sensitivity at the EP point. In this work, we present an new approach to EP sensing which goes beyond these two traditional constraints. Firstly, instead of measuring the spectra, our scheme of EP based sensing is based on the observation of decay length of the optical mode in finite size gratings, which is validated via coupled mode theory as well as full wave electrodynamic simulations. Secondly, for larger perturbation strengths, the EP is spectrally shifted instead of being destroyed -- this spectral shift of the EP is calibrated and using this look-up table, we propose continuous real time detection by varying the excitation laser wavelength. As a proof of principle of our technique, we present an application to the sensing of coronavirus particles, which shows unprecedented limit of detection. These findings will contribute to the expanding field of exceptional point based sensing technologies for real time applications beyond spectral measurements.

Unfolding the Toric Code Model with Emergent Qubits

We present the idea of emergent qubits by an exact model construction on a trestle, also generalized to arbitrary graphs. The corresponding eigenstates are quantum paramagnetic, with free multipolar moments. We rigorously transform the toric code model on a torus, cylinder and sheet into emergent qubits, writing all the eigenstates exactly. We devise exact quantum circuits for the toric code and other eigenstates described here. The depth of the circuit for toric code eigenstates on torus grows linearly with the total number of qubits, as compared to the sublinear growth on cylinder or sheet.

Polaritons in photonic hypercrystals of van der Waals materials

In-plane Hyperbolic Phonon polaritons (HPhPs) are quasiparticles formed via coupling of photons and optical phonons in in-plane hyperbolic materials and offer unique applications in sensing, thermal emitters and high resolution imaging. However, the large momentum mismatch between photons and these in-plane HPhPs has restricted their technological potential as most experimental demonstration rely on sophisticated and expensive near field detection schemes. In this work, using the example of $α-$MoO$_3$, we demonstrate that by constructing photonic hypercrystals of this material, one can not only excite these in-plane HPhPs in the far field but also tune the far field response via twisting the hypercrystal lattice with respect the lattice of $α-$MoO$_3$. Our findings will pave the way for the development of practical in-plane HPhP devices as well as provide access to new fundamental physics of such materials via conventional and well developed far field measurement techniques.

Photometric and Kinematic study of the open cluster NGC 1027

We present photometric and kinematic analysis of an intermediate age open cluster NGC 1027 using $UBV(RI)_c$ and Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) data. Structural and fundamental parameters such as cluster center, cluster extent, reddening, age and distance are estimated in this study. Cluster center is found about 2 arcmin away from the center reported earlier. Radius has been estimated to be about 8.00 arcmin(2.65pc). Using proper motion Gaia EDR3 data, membership probabilities has been derived for the stars in the region of cluster radius. We find mean proper motion of the cluster to be $\sim$(-0.84, 2.04) mas yr$^{-1}$ in (RA, DEC). We find 217 most probable (P$_μ>$ 70\%) cluster members with mean parallax 0.892 $\pm$ 0.088 mas. Out of these, 160 members have counterparts in our optical observations. Few stars having P$_μ>$ 70\% are found out of the cluster radius showing imprints of dynamical evolution. The color-color and color-magnitude diagrams for the cluster members found within 8.00 arcmin have been constructed using $UBV(RI)_c$ photometry and Gaia EDR3 data. This yields a reddening E($B$-$V$) $\sim$ 0.36 mag, age $\sim$ 130 Myr and distance $\sim$ 1.14 kpc. The mass function slope in the cluster region is $Γ$ $\sim$ -1.46 $\pm$ 0.15, which is similar to other Galactic open clusters. The dynamical study shows lack of faint stars in its inner region leading to mass segregation effect. A comparison of dynamical age with cluster age indicates that NGC 1027 is a dynamically relaxed cluster suggesting that mass segregation may be imprint of its dynamical relaxation.

A universal and stable metasurface for photonic quasi bound state in continuum coupled with two dimensional semiconductors

Strong coupling of excitons to optical cavity modes is of immense importance to understanding the fundamental physics of quantum electrodynamics at the nanoscale as well as for practical applications in quantum information technologies. There have been several attempts at achieving strong coupling between excitons in two dimensional semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and photonic quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs). We identify two gaps in the platforms for achieving strong coupling between TMDC excitons and photonic quasi-BICs: firstly, in the studies so far, different cavity architectures have been employed for coupling to different TMDCs. This would mean that typically, the fabrication process flow for the cavities will need to be modified as one moves from one TMDC to the other, which can limit the technological progress in the field. Secondly, there has been no discussion of the impact of fabrication imperfections in the studies on strong coupling of these subsystems so far. In this work, we address these two questions by optimizing a cavity with the same architecture which can couple to the four typical TMDCs (MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, WSe$_2$) and perform a detailed investigation on the fabrication tolerance of the associated photonic quasi-BICs and their impact on strong coupling.

Low-temperature theory of inversion and quantum oscillations in Kondo insulators

The half-filled Kondo lattice model is studied at low temperatures on simple cubic lattice using the self-consistent theory developed in Phys. Rev. B 96, 075115 (2017). It is found to have three distinct insulating phases in the temperature-hopping plane, namely, the strong coupling Kondo singlet (KS) phase, the inverted Kondo singlet (iKS) phase distinguished from the KS by inversion, and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase. The quasiparticle density of states across the inversion transition is noted to exhibit dimensional reduction, which can differentiate between the KS and iKS insulators in experiments. Magnetic quantum oscillations obtained in the iKS and AFM phases are found to show Lifshitz-Kosevich like behaviour with temperature as well as inverse hopping.

LOFAR search for radio emission from galaxies hosting tidal disruption events

Radio emission from 23 tidal disruption event host galaxies were searched in the 144 MHz LOFAR-LoTSS2 images. Three host galaxies are detected with diffuse radio emission, which can be interpreted as either galactic synchrotron radio emission or diffuse radio halo in dense galactic environments. Non-detection of (transient) radio emission in majority of galaxies could be due to self-absorption of radio emission associated with the tidal disruption event. The detected objects are AT2018iih, RBS 1032, and NGC 5905. Non-detection for Sw 1644+57 is also reported.

A low cost plasmonic platform for photon emission engineering of two dimensional semiconductors

Although the field of 2D materials has democratized materials science by making high quality samples accessible cheaply, due to the atomically thin nature of these systems, an integration with nanostructures is almost always required to obtain a significant optical response. Traditionally, these nanostructures are fabricated via electron beam lithography or focused ion beam milling, which are expensive and large area fabrication can be further time consuming. In order to overcome this problem, we report the integration of 2D semiconductors on a cost-effective and large area fabricated nanocone platform. We show that the plasmon modes of our nanocone structures lead to photoluminescence (PL) enhancement of monolayer WSe$_2$ by about eight to ten times compared to the non-plasmonic case, consistent with finite-difference time-domain simulations. Excitation power-dependent measurements reveal that our nanocone platform enables a versatile route to engineering the relative exciton trion contributions to the emission.

Quest for the upcoming periastron passage of an episodic dust maker and particle accelerating colliding wind binary: WR 125

We have carried out a long term infrared and X-ray investigation of the colliding wind binary WR 125 (WC7+O9III). The source was monitored using AstroSat-Soft X-ray Telescope and TIRCAM2 mounted at the back of 3.6 m Devasthal Optical Telescope. WR 125 appeared brighter in near infra-red K-band during the years 2017-2021 which is attributed to another episode of dust formation similar to the one reported during the likely periastron passage at the beginning of the 1990s. This is further supported by enhanced emission observed in W1 and W2 bands of WISE from 2018-19. By combining archival X-ray data sets with our new measurements, long-term variations have been noticed. The source reaches a lower emission state in June 2020 (close to the recent infrared maximum) which could be due to enhanced absorption of X-rays produced in the colliding wind region by the WC stellar wind close to the periastron in an eccentric orbit. The time interval between the previous and latest X-ray low states may indicate an orbital period of 28-29 years, in fair agreement with the recurrence time of episodic dust production. We also discuss published radio measurements in the context of a common picture based on a long period binary scenario. These results allow us to draw relevant guidelines for future multi-wavelength observations of WR 125.

Quantum paramagnetism and magnetization plateaus in a kagome-honeycomb Heisenberg antiferromagnet

A spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice is investigated by doing triplon analysis and quantum Monte Carlo calculations. This model, inspired by Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$), has three different antiferromagnetic exchange interactions ($J_A$, $J_B$, $J_C$) on three different sets of nearest-neighbour bonds which form a kagome superlattice. While the model is bipartite and unfrustrated, its quantum phase diagram is found to be dominated by a quantum paramagnetic phase that is best described as a spin-gapped hexagonal-singlet state. The Néel antiferromagnetic order survives only in a small region around $J_A=J_B=J_C$. The magnetization produced by external magnetic field is found to exhibit plateaus at 1/3 and 2/3 of the saturation value, or at 1/3 alone, or no plateaus. Notably, the plateaus exist only inside a bounded region within the hexagonal-singlet phase. This study provides a clear understanding of the spin-gapped behaviour and magnetization plateaus observed in Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$), and also predicts the possible disappearance of 2/3 plateau under pressure.

Observations with the 3.6 meter Devasthal Optical Telescope

The 3.6 meter Indo-Belgian Devasthal optical telescope (DOT) has been used for optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of celestial objects. The telescope has detected stars of B = 24.5+-0.2; R = 24.6+-0.12 and g = 25.2+-0.2 mag in exposure times of 1200, 4320 and 3600 seconds respectively. In one hour of exposure time, a distant galaxy of 24.3+-0.2 mag and point sources of ~ 25 mag have been detected in the SDSS i band. The NIR observations show that stars up to J = 20+-0.1; H = 18.8+-0.1 and K = 18.2+-0.1 mag can be detected in effective exposure times of 500, 550 and 1000 seconds respectively. The nbL band sources brighter than ~9.2 mag and strong (> 0.4 Jy) PAH emitting sources like Sh 2-61 can also be observed with the 3.6 meter DOT. A binary star having angular separation of 0.4 arc-sec has been resolved by the telescope. Sky images with sub-arc-sec angular resolutions are observed with the telescope at wavelengths ranging from optical to NIR for a good fraction of observing time. The on-site performance of the telescope is found to be at par with the performance of other similar telescopes located elsewhere in the world. Due to advantage of its geographical location, the 3.6 meter DOT can provide optical and NIR observations for a number of front line Galactic and extra-galactic astrophysical research problems including optical follow up of GMRT and AstroSat sources and optical transient objects.

PAH and nbL Features Detection in Planetary Nebulae NGC 7027 and BD +303639 with TIRCAM2 Instrument on 3.6m DOT

High resolution infrared imaging observations of the young Planetary Nebulae NGC 7027 and BD +303639, taken with the newly installed TIFR Infrared Camera-II (TIRCAM2) on 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT), ARIES, Nainital, are being reported. The images are acquired in J, H, K, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and narrow-band L (nbL) filters. The observations show emission from warm dust and PAHs in the circumstellar shells. The imaging of the two objects are among the first observations in PAH and nbL bands using TIRCAM2 on DOT. The NGC 7027 images in all bands show similar elliptical morphology with ~6".7 and ~4".5 semi-major and semi-minor axes. Considering size up to 10% of peak value the nebula extends upto 8" from the central star revealing a multipolar evolution. The relatively cooler BD +303639 shows a rectangular-ring shaped nebula. In J and H bands it shows an angular diameter of ~8", while a smaller ~6".9 size is observed in K, PAH and nbL bands. The 3.28 micron emission indicates presence of PAHs at about 6000 and 5000 AU from the central stars in NGC 7027 and BD +303639 respectively. Analysis suggests domination of neutral PAHs in BD+303639, while in NGC 7027 there is higher ionization and more processed PAH population.

Variable stars in the field of intermediate-age open cluster NGC 559

This work presents the first long-term photometric variability survey of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 559. Time-series V band photometric observations on 40 nights taken over more than three years with three different telescopes are analyzed to search for variable stars in the cluster. We investigate the data for the periodicity analysis and reveal 70 variable stars including 67 periodic variables in the target field, all of them are newly discovered. The membership analysis of the periodic variables reveal that 30 of them belong to the cluster and remaining 37 are identified as field variables. Out of the 67 periodic variables, 48 are short-period (P<1 day) variables and 19 are long-period (P>1 day) variables. The variable stars have periodicity between 3 hours to 41 days and their brightness ranges from V = 10.9 to 19.3 mag. The periodic variables belonging to the cluster are then classified into different variability types on the basis of observational properties such as shape of the light curves, periods, amplitudes, as well as their positions in the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram. As a result, we identify one Algol type eclipsing binary, one possible blue straggler star, 3 slowly pulsating B type stars, 5 rotational variables, 11 non-pulsating variables, 2 FKCOM variables and remaining 7 are characterized as miscellaneous variables. We also identify three Eclipsing Binary stars (EBs) belonging to the field star population. The PHOEBE package is used to analyse the light curve of all four EBs in order to determine the parameters of the binary systems such as masses, temperatures and radii.

Photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the peculiar Type IIn SN 2012ab

We present an extensive ($\sim$ 1200 d) photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2012ab. After a rapid initial rise leading to a bright maximum (M$_{R}$ = $-$19.39 mag), the light curves show a plateau lasting about 2 months followed by a steep decline up to about 100 d. Only in the $U$ band the decline is constant in the same interval. At later phases, the light curves remain flatter than the $^{56}$Co decline suggesting the increasing contribution of the interaction between SN ejecta with circumstellar material (CSM). Although heavily contaminated by emission lines of the host galaxy, the early spectral sequence (until 32 d) shows persistent narrow emissions, indicative of slow unshocked CSM, and the emergence of broad Balmer lines of hydrogen with P-Cygni profiles over a blue continuum, arising from a fast expanding SN ejecta. From about 2 months to $\sim$1200 d, the P-Cygni profiles are overcome by intermediate width emissions (FWHM $\sim 6000$ \kms), produced in the shocked region due to interaction. On the red wing a red bump appears after 76 d, likely a signature of the onset of interaction of the receding ejecta with the CSM. The presence of fast material both approaching and then receding is suggestive that we are observing the SN along the axis of a jet-like ejection in a cavity devoid of or uninterrupted by CSM in the innermost regions.

Optical studies of two stripped envelope supernovae SN 2015ap (Type Ib) and SN 2016P (Type Ic)

We present the photometric and spectroscopic studies of a Type Ib SN 2015ap and a Type Ic SN 2016P. SN 2015ap is one of the bright (M$_{V}$ = $-$18.04 mag) Type Ib while SN 2016P lies at an average value among the Type Ic SNe (M$_{V}$ = $-$17.53 mag). Bolometric light curve modelling of SNe 2015ap and 2016P indicates that both the SNe are powered by $^{56}$Ni + magnetar model with $^{56}$Ni masses of 0.01 M$_{\odot}$ and 0.002 M$_{\odot}$, ejecta masses of 3.75 M$_{\odot}$ and 4.66 M$_{\odot}$, spin period P$_{0}$ of 25.8 ms and 36.5 ms and magnetic field B$_{p}$ of 28.39 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ Gauss and 35.3 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ Gauss respectively. The early spectra of SN 2015ap shows prominent lines of He with a "W" feature due to Fe complexes while other lines of Mg II, Na I and Si II are present in both SNe 2015ap and 2016P. Nebular phase [O I] profile indicates an asymmetric profile in SN 2015ap. The [O I]/[Ca II] ratio and nebular spectral modelling of SN 2015ap hints towards a progenitor mass between 12 $-$ 20 M$_{\odot}$.

Power-law growth of time and strength of squeezing near quantum critical point

The dynamics of squeezing across quantum phase transition in two basic models, viz., the one-axis twisting model in transverse field and the Dicke model, is investigated using Holstein-Primakoff representation in the large spin limit. Near the phase boundary between the disordered (normal) and the ordered (superradiant) phase, the strength of spin and photon squeezing and the duration of time for which the system stays in the highly squeezed state are found to exhibit strong power-law growth with distance from the quantum critical point. The critical exponent for squeezing time is found to be 1/2 in both the models, and for squeezing strength, it is shown to be 1/2 in the one-axis twisting model, and 1 for the Dicke model which in the limit of extreme detuning also becomes 1/2.
