X-ray emission from O-type stars : DH Cep and HD 97434

We present X-ray emission characteristics of the massive O-type stars DH Cep and HD 97434 using archival XMM-Newton observations. There is no convincing evidence for short term variability in the X-ray intensity during the observations. However, the analysis of their spectra reveals X-ray structure being consistent with two-temperature plasma model. The hydrogen column densities derived from X-ray spectra of DH Cep and HD 97434 are in agreement with the reddening measurements for their corresponding host clusters NGC 7380 and Trumpler 18, indicating that the absorption by stellar wind is negligible. The X-ray emission from these hot stars is interpreted in terms of the standard instability-driven wind shock model.

Graceful exit via monopoles in a theory with O'Raifeartaigh type supersymmetry breaking

We study the stability of supersymmetry breaking metastable vacua and supersymmetric vacua in the presence of solitons. The metastable vacua of supersymmetric QCD and those found elsewhere such as in models based on the SU(5) grand unified group support the existence of topological solitons. The vacua containing such topological defects can become unstable against decay into lower energy configurations. We show for a specific model that a finite region of the available parameter space of couplings becomes disallowed due to the presence of monopoles. In a manner similar to previous studies based on cosmic strings, it is shown that soliton solutions arising in supersymmetric theories can put constraints on the range of allowed values of the couplings arising in the theories. Implications for cosmology are discussed.

X-ray emission characteristics of two WR binaries : V444 Cyg and CD Cru

We present X-ray analysis of two Wolf-Rayet (WR) binaries: V444 Cyg and CD Cru using the data from observations with XMM-Newton. The X-ray light curves show the phase locked variability in both binaries, where the flux increased by a factor of $\sim 2$ in the case of V444 Cyg and $\sim 1.5$ in the case of CD Cru from minimum to maximum. The maximum luminosities in the 0.3--7.5 keV energy band were found to be $5.8\times10^{32}$ and $2.8\times10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for V444 Cyg and CD Cru, respectively. X-ray spectra of these stars confirmed large extinction and revealed hot plasma with prominent emission line features of highly ionized Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca and Fe, and are found to be consistent with a two-temperature plasma model. The cooler plasma at a temperature of $\sim$ 0.6 keV was found to be constant at all phases of both binaries, and could be due to a distribution of small-scale shocks in radiation-driven outflows. The hot components in these binaries were found to be phase dependent. They varied from 1.85 to 9.61 keV for V444 Cyg and from 1.63 to 4.27 keV for CD Cru. The absorption of the hard component varied with orbital phase and found to be maximum during primary eclipse of V444 Cyg. The high plasma temperature and variability with orbital phase suggest that the hard-component emission is caused by a colliding wind shock between the binary components.

Honeycomb antiferromagnet with a triply degenerate dimer ground state

We present an antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 model on honeycomb lattice. It has two parts, one of which is the usual nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model. The other part is a certain multiple spin interaction term, introduced by us, which is exactly solvable for the ground state. Without the Heisenberg part, the model has an exact threefold degenerate dimer ground state. This exact ground state is also noted to exist for the general spin-S case. For the spin-1/2 case, we further carry out the triplon analysis in the ground state, to study the competition between the Heisenberg and the multiple spin interactions. This approximate calculation exhibits a continuous quantum phase transition from the dimer order to Néel order.

On stability of false vacuum in supersymmetric theories with cosmic strings

We study the stability of supersymmetry breaking vacuum in the presence of cosmic strings arising in the messenger sector. For certain ranges of the couplings, the desired supersymmetry breaking vacua become unstable against decay into phenomenologically unacceptable vacua. This sets constraints on the range of allowed values of the coupling constants appearing in the models and more generally on the chosen dynamics of gauge symmetry breaking.

Exact solution of the infinite-U Hubbard problem and other models in one dimension

An interacting spin-fermion model is exactly solved on an open chain. In a certain representation, it is the nearest-neighbor Hubbard model in the limit of infinite $U$ (local interaction). Exact solution of its complete energy eigen-spectrum is accomplished by introducing a unitary transformation which maps the original problem to a tight-binding model of the fermions only. Physically, the exact solution implies the absence of Nagaoka ferromagnetism in the ground state for arbitrary electron densities. The present method solves a class of very general models exactly. Few more problems are discussed as an application of this unitary transform method.

Emergent Radiation in an Atom-Field System at Twice-Resonance

A two-level atom interacting with a single mode of quantized electromagnetic radiation is discussed using a representation in which the atom and the radiation are unified into a {\em new} canonical radiation. At the {\em twice-resonance}, when the frequency of the original radiation is twice the atomic transition frequency ($ω=2ε$), the {\em emergent} unified field in the non-interacting atom-field system resembles a free radiation of frequency $ε$. This free emergent radiation is further shown to exist in the presence of an interaction which looks similar to the atom-field interaction in the dipole approximation. The one-photon correlation and the population inversion are discussed as the possible means of observing the emergent radiation. The entanglement properties of the emergent radiation are also discussed.

Optical and near-IR photometric study of the open cluster NGC 637 and NGC 957

We present UBVRI CCD photometry in the region of the open clusters NGC 637 and NGC 957. The radii are found to be 4.2 arcmin and 4.3 arcmin. Their reddenings E(B-V) are 0.64+/-0.05 mag and 0.71+/-0.05 mag and their distances, from main sequence fitting are 2.5+/-0.2 kpc and 2.2+/-0.2 kpc. Comparison with Z=0.02 isochrones leads to an age of 10+/-5 Myr for both clusters. Combining our photometry with 2MASS JHK shows the reddening law in these directions to be normal. Mass function slopes of x=1.65+/-0.20 and 1.31+/-0.50 are derived for the clusters, both of which are found to be dynamically relaxed. Spectral and photometric characteristics of three Be stars, two in NGC 957 and one (newly discovered) in NGC 637 indicate them to be of Classical Be type.

Multi-wavelength study of a young open cluster NGC 7419

Using UBVRI Halpha CCD photometric observations and the archival NIR and X-ray data, we have carried out a multi-wavelength study of a young star cluster NGC 7419. An age of 22.5+/-3.0 Myr and a distance of 3230^{+330}_{-430} pc are derived for the cluster with a higher value of color excess ratio E(U-B)/E(B-V) than the normal one. There is an evidence for mass segregation in this dynamically relaxed cluster with mass function slope is in agreement with the Salpeter value. NIR and Halpha excess support the existence of a young (< 2 Myr) stellar population of Herbig Ae/Be stars (> 3.0 M_sun) indicating a second episode of star formation in the cluster region. Using XMM-Newton observations, we found several X-ray sources in the cluster region but none of the Herbig Ae/Be stars is detected in X-rays. We compare the distribution of upper limits for Herbig Ae/Be stars with the X-ray distribution functions of the T-Tauri and the Herbig Ae/Be stars from previous studies, and found that the X-ray emission level of these Herbig Ae/Be stars is not more than L_X ~5.2 x 10^{30} erg/s, which is not significantly higher than for the T-Tauri stars. Therefore, X-ray emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars could be the result of either unresolved companion stars or a process similar to T-Tauri stars. We report an extended X-ray emission from the cluster region NGC 7419, with a total L_X estimate of ~ 1.8 x 10^31 erg/s/arcmin^2. Investigation of dust and CO map of 1 degree region around the cluster indicates the presence of a foreground dust cloud which is most likely associated with star forming region Sh2-154. This cloud harbors uniformly distributed pre main sequence stars (0.1-2.0M_sun) and the star formation in this cloud depend mostly upon the primordial fragmentation.

Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the low-luminosity X-ray pulsators SAX J1324.4-6200 and SAX J1452.8-5949

We present results from our Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of two low-luminosity X-ray pulsators SAX J1324.4-6200 and SAX J1452.8-5949 which have spin-periods of 172 s and 437 s respectively. The XMM-Newton spectra for both sources can be fitted well with a simple power-law model of photon index ~ 1.0. A black-body model can equally well fit the spectra with a temperature of ~ 2 keV for both sources. During our XMM-Newton observations, SAX J1324.4-6200 is detected with coherent X-ray pulsations at a period of $172.86 \pm 0.02$ s while no pulsations with a pulse fraction greater than 15% (at 98% confidence level) are detected in SAX J1452.8--5949. The spin period of SAX J1324.4-6200 is found to be increasing on a time-scale of $\dot{P}$ = $(6.34 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-9}$ s s$^{-1}$ which would suggest that the accretor is a neutron star and not a white dwarf. Using sub-arcsec spatial resolution of the Chandra telescope, possible counterparts are seen for both sources in the near-infrared images obtained with the SOFI instrument on the New Technology Telescope. The X-ray and near-infrared properties of SAX J1324.4-6200 suggest it to be either a persistent high mass accreting X-ray pulsar or a symbiotic X-ray binary pulsar at a distance $\le$ 9 kpc. We identify the infrared counterpart of SAX J1452.8--5949 to be a late-type main sequence star at a distance $\le$ 10 kpc, thus ruling out SAX J1452.8--5949 to be a high mass X-ray binary. However with the present X-ray and near-infrared observations, we cannot make any further conclusive conclusion about the nature of SAX J1452.8-5949.

Canonical representation for electrons and its application to the Hubbard model

A new representation for electrons is introduced, in which the electron operators are written in terms of a spinless fermion and the Pauli operators. This representation is canonical, invertible and constraint-free. Importantly, it simplifies the Hubbard interaction. On a bipartite lattice, the Hubbard model is reduced to a form in which the exchange interaction emerges simply by decoupling the Pauli subsystem from the spinless fermion bath. This exchange correctly reproduces the large $U$ superexchange. Also derived, for $U=\pm\infty$, is the Hamiltonian to study Nagaoka ferromagnetism. In this representation, the infinite-$U$ Hubbard problem becomes elegant and easier to handle. Interestingly, the ferromagnetism in Hubbard model is found to be related to the gauge invariance of the spinless fermions. Generalization of this representation for the multicomponent fermions, a new representation for bosons, the notion of a `soft-core' fermion, and some interesting unitary transformations are introduced and discussed in the appendices.

Fourfold degenerate columnar-dimer ground state in square lattice antiferromagnets

We construct and study two frustrated quantum spin-1/2 models on square lattice, which are like the antiferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ model with some additional four-spin exchange interactions. These models admit an exactly solvable case in which the ground state consists of four degenerate columnar-dimer singlet (CDS) configurations. Away from the exact case, we employ bond-operator mean-field theory to investigate the evolution of the ground state by varying the interaction parameters. The mean-field calculation reveals a quantum phase diagram in which the CDS phase undergoes a continuous phase transition to either Néel or collinear ordered antiferromagnetic phases.

Substantial magneto-electric coupling near room temperature in Bi2Fe4O9

We report remarkable multiferroic effects in polycrystalline Bi2Fe4O9. High-resolution X-ray diffraction shows that this compound has orthorhombic structure. Magnetic measurements confirm an antiferromagnetic transition around 260 K. A pronounced inverse S-shape anomaly in the loss tangent of dielectric measurement is observed near the Neel temperature. This feature shifts with the application of magnetic field. These anomalies are indicative of substantial coupling between the electric and magnetic orders in this compound.

Multiwavelength study of the transient X-ray binary IGR J01583+6713

We have investigated multiband optical photometric variability and stability of the H$α$ line profile of the transient X-ray binary IGR J01583+6713. We set an upper limit of 0.05 mag on photometric variations in the {\it V} band over a time scale of 3 months. The H$α$ line is found to consist of non-Gaussian profile and quite stable for a duration of 2 months. We have identified the spectral type of the companion star to be B2 IVe while distance to the source is estimated to be $\sim$ 4.0 kpc. Along with the optical observations, we have also carried out analysis of X-ray data from three short observations of the source, two with the {\it Swift}--XRT and one with the {\it RXTE}--PCA. We have detected a variation in the absorption column density, from a value of 22.0 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ immediately after the outburst down to 2.6 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ four months afterwards. In the quiescent state, the X-ray absorption is consistent with the optical reddening measurement of E(B - V) = 1.46 mag. From one of the {\it Swift} observations, during which the X-ray intensity was higher, we have a possible pulse detection with a period of 469.2 s. For a Be X-ray binary, this indicates an orbital period in the range of 216--561 days for this binary system.

A study of the long term evolution of quasi periodic oscillations in the accretion powered X-ray pulsar 4U 1626-67

We report here a study of the long term properties of Quasi Periodic Oscillations (QPO) in an unusual accreting X-ray pulsar, 4U 1626--67. This is a unique accretion powered X-ray pulsar in which we have found the QPOs to be present during all sufficiently long X-ray observations with a wide range of X-ray observatories. In the present spin-down era of this source, the QPO central frequency is found to be decreasing. In the earlier spin-up era of this source, there are only two reports of QPO detections, in 1983 with EXOSAT and 1988 with GINGA with an increasing trend. The QPO frequency evolution in 4U 1626--67 during the last 22 years changed from a positive to a negative trend, somewhat coincident with the torque reversal in this source. In the accretion powered X-ray pulsars, the QPO frequency is directly related to the inner radius of the accretion disk, as per Keplerian Frequency Model (KFM) and Beat Frequency Model (BFM). A gradual depletion of accretion disk is reported earlier from the X-ray spectral, flux and pulse profile measurements. The present QPO frequency evolution study shows that X-ray flux and mass accretion rate may not change by the same factor, hence the simple KFM and BFM are not able to explain the QPO evolution in this source. This is the only X-ray pulsar to show persistent QPOs and is also the first accreting X-ray pulsar in which the QPO history is reported for a long time scale relating it with the long term evolution of the accretion disk.

A 2D quantum antiferromagnet with a four-fold degenerate valence-bond-solid ground state

We study the competition between antiferromagnetic order and valence bond solid formation in a two-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 model. The J1-J2 model on the square lattice is further frustrated by introducing products of three-spin projectors which stabilize four dimer-product states as degenerate ground states. These four states are reminiscent of the dimerized singlet ground state of the Shastry-Sutherland model. Using exact diagonalizations, we study the evolution of the ground state by varying theratio of interactions. For a large range of parameters (J2 > 0.25J1), our model shows a direct transition between the valence-bond-solid phase and the collinear antiferromagnetic phase. For small values of J2, several intermediate phases appear which are also analyzed.

Absence of single particle Bose-Einstein condensation at low densities for bosons with correlated-hopping

Motivated by the physics of mobile triplets in frustrated quantum magnets, the properties of a two dimensional model of bosons with correlated-hopping are investigated. A mean-field analysis reveals the presence of a pairing phase without single particle Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at low densities for sufficiently strong correlated-hopping, and of an Ising quantum phase transition towards a BEC phase at larger density. The physical arguments supporting the mean-field results and their implications for bosonic and quantum spin systems are discussed.

Two quantum spin models on the checkerboard lattice with an exact two-fold degenerate Shastry-Sutherland ground state

Two quantum spin models with bilinear-biquadratic exchange interactions are constructed on the checkerboard lattice. It is proved that, under certain sufficient conditions on the exchange parameters, their ground states consist of two degenerate Shastry-Sutherland singlet configurations. The constructions are studied for arbitrary spin-S. The sufficient conditions for the existence of ferromagnetic ground state are also found exactly. The approximate quantum phase diagrams are presented using the exact results, together with a variational estimate for the Néel antiferromagnetic phase. A two-leg spin-1/2 ladder model, based on one of the above constructions, is considered which admits exact solution for a large number of eigenstates. The ladder model is shown to have exact level-crossing between the rung-singlet state and the AKLT state in the singlet ground state. Also introduced is the notion of perpendicularity for quantum spin vectors, which appears in the discussion on one of the two checkerboard models, and is discussed in the Appendix.
