On the highly reddened members in 6 young galactic star clusters - a multiwavelength study

The spectral and reddening properties of 211 highly reddened proper motion members with $V < 15$ mag in 6 young galactic star clusters are investigated using low resolution spectroscopic, broad-band $UBVRIJHK$ and mid-IR data. We report emission features in CaII HK and HI lines for a sample of 29 stars including 11 stars reported for the first time and also provide either a new or more reliable spectral class for a sample of 24 stars. CaII triplet width measurements are used to indicate the presence of an accretion disk for a dozen stars and to hint luminosity for a couple of stars. On the basis of spectral features, near-IR excesses, dereddened color-color diagrams and mid-IR spectral indices we identify a group of 28 pre-main sequence cluster members including 5 highly probable Herbig Ae/Be and 6 classical T Tauri star. A total of 25 non-emission MS stars, amounting to $\sim$ 10 % early type MS members, appears to show Vega-like characteristics or are precursors to such a phenomenon. The various membership indicators suggest that $\sim$ 16% of the PM members are non-members. A significant fraction ($>$70%) of program stars in NGC 1976, NGC 2244, NGC 6530 and NGC 6611 show anomalous reddening with $R_{V}$ = $5.11\pm0.11$, $3.60\pm0.05$, $3.87\pm0.05$ and $3.56\pm 0.02$, respectively, indicating the presence of grain size dust larger than that typical to the diffuse medium. A small number of stars in NGC 1976, NGC 2244 and NGC 6611 also show normal behavior while the cluster NGC 6823 appears to have a normal reddening. Three highly luminous late type giants, one in NGC 2244 and two in NGC 6530, appears to be member and are in post-hydrogen-core-burning stages suggesting a prolonged duration ($\sim$ 25 Myrs) of star formation.

Characteristics of Aerosol Spectral Optical Depths over Manora Peak, Nainital $-$ A High Altitude Station in the Central Himalayas

We present, for the first time, spectral behaviour of aerosol optical depths (AODs) over Manora Peak, Nainital located at an altitude of $\sim$ 2 km in the Shivalik ranges of central Himalayas. The observations were carried out using a Multi-Wavelength solar Radiometer during January to December 2002. The main results of the study are extremely low AODs during winter, a remarkable increase to high values in summer and a distinct change in the spectral dependencies of AODs from a relatively steeper spectra during winter to a shallower one in summer. During transparent days, the AOD values lie usually below 0.08 while during dusty (turbid) days, it lies between 0.08 to 0.69 at 0.5 $μ$m. The average AOD value at 0.5 $μ$m during winters, particularly in January and February, is $\sim 0.03\pm0.01$. The mean aerosol extinction law at Manora Peak during 2002 is best represented by $0.10 λ^{-0.61}$. However during transparent days, which almost covers 40% of the time, it is represented by $0.02 λ^{-0.97}$. This value of wavelength exponent, representing reduced coarse concentration and presence of fine aerosols, indicates that the station measures aerosol in the free troposphere at least during part of the year.

Superconductivity in CoO$_2$ Layers and the Resonating Valence Bond Mean Field Theory of the Triangular Lattice t-J model

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in two dimensional CoO$_2$ layers, we present some possibly useful results of the RVB mean field theory applied to the triangular lattice. Away from half filling, the order parameter is found to be complex, and yields a fully gapped quasiparticle spectrum. The sign of the hopping plays a crucial role in the analysis, and we find that superconductivity is as fragile for one sign as it is robust for the other. Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O is argued to belong to the robust case, by comparing the LDA Fermi surface with an effective tight binding model. The high frequency Hall constant in this system is potentially interesting, since it is pointed out to increase linearly with temperature without saturation for T $>$ T$_{degeneracy}$.

Photometry and low resolution spectroscopy of hot post-AGB candidates

We have obtained Johnson U, B, V and Cousins R, I photometry and low resolution spectra of a small sample of hot post-AGB candidates. Using the present data in combination with JHK data from 2MASS, infrared data from the MSX catalog and the IRAS fluxes, we have studied the spectral energy distribution (SED) of these stars. Using the DUSTY code we have estimated the dust temperatures, the distances to the stars, the mass-loss rates, angular radii of the inner boundary of the dust envelopes and dynamical ages from the tip of the AGB. These candidates have also been imaged through a narrow band H-alpha filter, to search for nebulosity around the central stars. Our H-alpha images revealed the bipolar morphology of the low excitation PN IRAS 17395-0841 with an angular extent of 2.8arcsec. The bipolar lobes of IRAS 17423-1755 in H-alpha were found to have an angular extent of 3.5arcsec (south-east lobe) and 2.2arcsec (north-west lobe). The dust envelope characteristics, low resolution spectrum and IRAS colors suggest that IRAS 18313-1738 is similar to the proto-planetary nebula (PPN) HD 51585. The SED of IRAS 17423-1755, IRAS 18313-1738 and IRAS 19127+1717 show a warm dust component (in addition to the cold dust) which may be due to recent and ongoing mass-loss.

On mass and velocity distributions in members of star clusters : An analytical approach

Dynamical evolution of stellar mass distribution in star clusters is analysed by considering simultaneously the effects of dynamical friction, stochastic heating and the gravitational potential due to mass distribution in the clusters. A simple expression is suggested for the dynamical friction which adequately describes it in both high and low velocity ranges and the effect of mass distribution in the cluster on the dynamics of a test mass can be described by an anharmonic potential. With the help of energy considerations we describe the dispersions in position and in velocity for stars of different masses showing how the slowing down and mass segregation of stars evolve in the cluster. Results are presented with the parameters for the star clusters of our Galaxy.

Spectrophotometry of the comets C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) and C/2002 C1 (Ikeya-Zhang)

Spectrophotometric observations of the coma of the comets C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) and C/2002 C1 (Ikeya-Zhang) were taken during Nov, Dec 2001 and Mar, Apr 2002 respectively with 104-cm telescope of the State Observatory, Nainital. CN ($λ$ 3883 Å) and C$_{2}$ swan bands ($λ$ 4695, $λ$ 5165 and $λ$ 5538 Å) have been identified in both the comets. Na I emission was detected in comet Ikeya-Zhang. An estimate of CN and C$_{2}$ abundances and their production rates have been derived. Dust production rates have also been determined.

Quantum spin models with exact dimer ground states

Inspired by the exact solution of the Majumdar-Ghosh model, a family of one-dimensional, translationally invariant spin hamiltonians is constructed. The exchange coupling in these models is antiferromagnetic, and decreases linearly with the separation between the spins. The coupling becomes identically zero beyond a certain distance. It is rigorously proved that the dimer configuration is an exact, superstable ground state configuration of all the members of the family on a periodic chain. The ground state is two-fold degenerate, and there exists an energy gap above the ground state. The Majumdar-Ghosh hamiltonian with two-fold degenerate dimer ground state is just the first member of the family. The scheme of construction is generalized to two and three dimensions, and illustrated with the help of some concrete examples. The first member in two dimensions is the Shastry-Sutherland model. Many of these models have exponentially degenerate, exact dimer ground states.

$Sr Cu_2 (BO_3)_2$: A Unique Mott Hubbard Insulator

We discuss the recently discovered system $Sr Cu_2 (BO_3)_2$, a realization of an exactly solvable model proposed two decades earlier. We propose its interpretation as a Mott Hubbard insulator. The possible superconducting phase arising from doping is explored, and its nature as well as its importance for testing the RVB theory of superconductivity are discussed.
