Ergodic Hysteresis of the Kerr black hole spectrum

We uncover a cascade of exceptional points (EPs) in the quasinormal mode spectrum of massive scalar perturbations of Kerr black holes, revealing an intricate non-Hermitian structure underlying their linear response. The cascade originates from a single damped mode that enters the extremal spectrum for sufficiently large field masses. We obtain evidence for an infinite sequence of EPs in the $(\ell,m)=(1,1)$ and $(2,2)$ sectors near the extremal limit, mediating the transition between damped and zero-damping modes. Each EP carries a geometric phase that enables adiabatic mode mixing across the entire overtone spectrum, a phenomenon we refer to as adiabatic ergodicity.

Massive scalar perturbations in Kerr Black Holes: near extremal analysis

We study quasinormal modes of massive scalar perturbations in Kerr black holes using the isomonodromic method. For arbitrary scalar masses $M μ$ and black hole spins $a/M$, we numerically determine the quasinormal frequencies for various orbital $\ell$, azimuthal $m$, and overtone $n$ numbers. In particular, we derive an analytic expression for frequencies of the zero-damping modes near the extremal limit $a/M \rightarrow 1$. For $\ell=m=1$, we reveal that the fundamental mode becomes a damped mode (rather than a zero-damping mode) if the scalar field is sufficiently heavy. By exploring the parameter space, we find numerical evidence for level-crossing between the longest-living mode and the first overtone at an exceptional point $(Mμ)_c \simeq 0.3704981$ and $(a/M)_c\simeq 0.9994660$.

Exceptional point and hysteresis in perturbations of Kerr black holes

We employ the isomonodromic method to study linear scalar massive perturbations of Kerr black holes for generic scalar masses $Mμ$ and generic black hole spins $a/M$. We find that the longest-living quasinormal mode and the first overtone coincide for $(Mμ)_c \simeq 0.3704981$ and $(a/M)_c\simeq 0.9994660$. We also show that the longest-living mode and the first overtone change continuously into each other as we vary the parameters around the point of degeneracy, providing evidence for the existence of a geometric phase around an exceptional point. We interpret our findings through a thermodynamic analogy.

Expansions for semiclassical conformal blocks

We propose a relation the expansions of regular and irregular semiclassical conformal blocks at different branch points making use of the connection between the accessory parameters of the BPZ decoupling equations to the logarithm derivative of isomonodromic tau functions. We give support for these relations by considering two eigenvalue problems for the confluent Heun equations obtained from the linearized perturbation theory of black holes. We first derive the large frequency expansion of the spheroidal equations, and then compare numerically the excited quasi-normal mode spectrum for the Schwarzschild case obtained from the large frequency expansion to the one obtained from the low frequency expansion and with the literature, indicating that the relations hold generically in the complex modulus plane.

Confluent conformal blocks and the Teukolsky master equation

Quasinormal modes of usual, four dimensional, Kerr black holes are described by certain solutions of a confluent Heun differential equation. In this work, we express these solutions in terms of the connection matrices for a Riemann-Hilbert problem, which was recently solved in terms of the Painlevé V transcendent. We use this formulation to generate the small-frequency expansion for the angular spheroidal harmonic eigenvalue, and derive conditions on the monodromy properties for the radial modes. Using exponentiation, we relate the accessory parameter to a semi-classical conformal description and discuss the properties of the operators involved. For the radial equation, while the operators at the horizons have Liouville momenta proportional to the entropy intake, we find that spatial infinity is described by a Whittaker operator.

Scalar/Dirac perturbations of the Reissner-Nordström black hole and Painlevé transcendents

We investigate spin-$0$ and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ perturbations for non-extremal and extremal Reissner-Nordström backgrounds using the isomonodromic method. We calculate the fundamental quasinormal modes (QNMs) associated with each perturbation as a function of the electromagnetic coupling $qQ$ and ratio $Q/M$. After corroborating the literature values for generic $qQ$ and $Q/M$, we turn to study the near-extremal limit. In parallel with the study of QNMs for the Kerr geometry, we find the existence of "non-damping" modes for $qQ$ above a spin-dependent critical value, and locate the bifurcation point in the $q-Q$ parameter space.

QNMs of scalar fields on small Reissner-Nordström-AdS$\mathbf{_5}$ black holes

We study the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a charged scalar field on a Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS$_{5}$) black hole in the small radius limit by using the isomonodromic method. We also derive the low-temperature expansion of the fundamental QNM frequency. Finally, we provide numerical evidence that instabilities appear in the small radius limit for large values of the charge of the scalar field.

Teukolsky master equation and Painlevé transcendents: numerics and extremal limit

We conduct an analysis of the quasi-normal modes for generic spin perturbations of the Kerr black hole using the isomonodromic method. The strategy consists of solving the Riemann-Hilbert map relating the accessory parameters of the differential equations involved to monodromy properties of the solutions, using the $τ$-function for the Painlevé V transcendent. We show good accordance of the method with the literature for generic rotation parameter $a<M$. In the extremal limit, we determined the dependence of the modes with the black hole temperature and establish that the extremal values of the modes are obtainable from the Painlevé V and III transcendents.

Remarks on holographic models of the Kerr-AdS$_{5}$ geometry

We study the low-temperature limit of scalar perturbations of the Kerr-AdS$_{5}$ black-hole for generic rotational parameters. We motivate the study by considering real-time holography of small black hole backgrounds. Using the isomonodromic technique, we show that corrections to the extremal limit can be encoded in the monodromy parameters of the Painlevé V transcendent, whose expansion is given in terms of irregular chiral conformal blocks. After discussing the contribution of the intermediate states to the quasi-normal modes, we perform a numerical analysis of the low-lying frequencies. We find that the fundamental mode is perturbatively stable at low temperatures for small black holes and that excited perturbations are superradiant, as expected from thermodynamical considerations. We close by considering the holographic interpretation of the unstable modes and the decaying process.

Vector perturbations of Kerr-AdS$_5$ and the Painlevé VI transcendent

We analyze the Ansatz of separability for Maxwell equations in generically spinning, five-dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes. We find that the parameter μintroduced in a previous work by O. Lunin can be interpreted as apparent singularities of the resulting radial and angular equations. Using isomonodromy deformations, we describe a non-linear symmetry of the system, under which μis tied to the Painlevé VI transcendent. By translating the boundary conditions imposed on the solutions of the equations for quasinormal modes in terms of monodromy data, we find a procedure to fix μand study the behavior of the quasinormal modes in the limit of fast spinning small black holes.

Scalar quasinormal modes of Kerr-AdS$\mathbf{_5}$

An analytic expression for the scalar quasinormal modes of the generic, spinning Kerr-$\mathrm{AdS_5}$ black holes was previously proposed by the authors in ref. 1, in terms of transcendental equations involving the Painlevé VI (PVI) $τ$ function. In this work, we carry out a numerical investigation of the modes for generic rotation parameters, comparing implementations of expansions for the PVI $τ$ function both in terms of conformal blocks (Nekrasov functions) and Fredholm determinants. We compare the results with standard numerical methods for the subcase of Schwarzschild black holes. We then derive asymptotic formulas for the angular eigenvalues and the quasinormal modes in the small black hole limit for generic scalar mass and discuss, both numerically and analytically, the appearance of superradiant modes.

On the Kerr-AdS/CFT correspondence

We review the relation between four-dimensional global conformal blocks and field propagation in ${\rm AdS_5}$. Following the standard argument that marginal perturbations should backreact in the geometry, we turn to the study of scalar fields in the generic Kerr-${\rm AdS_5}$ geometry. On one hand, the result for scattering coefficients can be obtained exactly using the isomonodromy technique, giving exact expressions in terms of $c=1$ chiral conformal blocks. On the other hand, one can use the analogy between the scalar field equations to the Level 2 null field Ward identity in two dimensional Liouville field theory to write approximate expressions for the same coefficients in terms of semi-classical chiral Liouville conformal blocks. Surprisingly, the conformal block thus constructed has a well-behaved interpretation in terms of Liouville vertex operators.

Large gravitons and near-horizon diffeomorphisms

Usual gauge fixing procedures in classical general relativity rely on the existence of solutions of a second order wave equation. We propose to use the equation to relate asymptotic symmetries at infinity to asymptotic symmetries of a black hole horizon, in tune with recent proposals. We illustrate the construction for the BTZ and four-dimensional Kerr black holes. We find in both cases a realization of the group of diffeomorphisms of the circle $S^1$.

Exploring the BTZ bulk with boundary conformal blocks

We point out a simple relation between the bulk field at an arbitrary radial position and the boundary OPE, by placing some old work by Ferrara, Gatto, Grillo and Parisi in the AdS/CFT context. This gives us, in principle, a prescription for extracting the classical bulk field from the boundary conformal block, and also clarifies why the latter is computed by a geodesic Witten diagram. We apply this prescription to the BTZ black hole - viewed as a pure state created by the insertion of a heavy operator in the boundary CFT_2 - and use it to relate a classical field in the bulk to a heavy-light Virasoro conformal block in the boundary. In particular, we obtain a relation between the radial bulk position and the conformal ratios in the boundary CFT. We use this to show that the singular points of the radial bulk equation occur when the dual boundary operators approach each other and that the associated bulk monodromies map to monodromies of the (appropriately transformed) conformal block, thus providing a CFT interpretation of the radial monodromy.

Kerr Scattering Coefficients via Isomonodromy

We study the scattering of a massless scalar field in a generic Kerr background. Using a particular gauge choice based on the current conservation of the radial equation, we give a generic formula for the scattering coefficient in terms of the composite monodromy parameter $σ$ between the inner and the outer horizons. Using the isomonodromy flow, we calculate $σ$ exactly in terms of the Painlevé V $τ$-function. We also show that the eigenvalue problem for the angular equation (spheroidal harmonics) can be calculated using the same techniques. We use recent developments relating the Painlevé V $τ$-function to Liouville irregular conformal blocks to claim that this scattering problem is solved in the combinatorial sense, with known expressions for the $τ$-function near the critical points.

Kerr-de Sitter Greybody Factors via Isomonodromy

Scattering data can be generically described in terms of monodromies. Here we obtain scattering amplitudes for conformally coupled scalar fields in Kerr-de Sitter black holes using this monodromy technique. The only non-trivial parameter, the composite monodromy parameter $σ_{ij}$ between two regular singular points, can be solved implicitily in terms of the Painlevé VI $τ$-function. The application of the Virasoro conformal blocks to solve the latter can now be interpreted as a verification of the striking relationship between conformal symmetry and black holes.

On the Existence of Monodromies for the Rabi model

We discuss the existence of monodromies associated with the singular points of the eigenvalue problem for the Rabi model. The complete control of the full monodromy data requires the taming of the Stokes phenomenon associated with the unique irregular singular point. The monodromy data, in particular the composite monodromy, are written in terms of the parameters of the model via the isomonodromy method and the tau-function of the Painlevé V. These data provide a systematic way to obtain the quantized spectrum of the Rabi model.

Coupling the Sorkin-Johnston State to Gravity

We consider the dynamics of the Sorkin-Johnston (SJ) state for a massless scalar field in two dimensions. We conduct a study of the renormalized stress-tensor by a subtraction procedure, and compare the results with those of the conformal vacuum, with an important contribution from correction term. We find a large trace anomaly and compute backreaction effects to two dimensional (Liouville) gravity. We find a natural interpretation for the mirror behavior of the SJ state described in previous works.
