Killing Horizons and Spinors

We study the near horizon geometry of generic Killing horizons constructing suitable coordinates and taking the appropriate scaling limit. We are able to show that the geometry will always show an enhancement of symmetries, and, in the extremal case, will develop a causally disconnected "throat" as expected. We analyze the implications of this to the Kerr/CFT conjecture and the attractor mechanism. We are also able to construct a set of special (pure) spinors associated with the horizon structure using their interpretation as maximally isotropic planes. The structure generalizes the usual reduced holonomy manifold in an interesting way and may be fruitful to the search of new types of compactification backgrounds.

On the Six-dimensional Kerr Theorem and Twistor Equation

The Kerr theorem is revisited as part of the twistor program in six dimensions. The relationship between pure spinors and integrable 3-planes is investigated. The real condition for Lorentzian spacetimes is seen to induce a projective property in the space of solutions, reminiscent of the quaternionic structure of the 6-dimensional Lorentz group. The twistor equation (or Killing spinor equations generically) also has an interpretation as integrable null planes and a family of Einstein spacetimes with this property are presented in the Kerr-Schild fashion.

Holography as Cutoff: a proposal for measure of inflationary universes

We propose the holographic principle as a dynamical cutoff for any quantum theory of gravity with a geometric description at low energies, incorporating ideas of effective field theory. We illustrate the proposal by revisiting the problem of defining a measure for homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes coupled to a scalar field and conclude by discussing the implications to the inflationary model.

Isomonodromy, Painlevé Transcendents and Scattering off of Black Holes

We apply the method of isomonodromy to study the scattering of a generic Kerr-NUT-(A)dS black hole. For generic values of the charges, the problem is related to the connection problem of the Painlevé VI transcendent. We review a few facts about Painlevé VI, Garnier systems and the Hamiltonian structure of flat connections in the Riemann sphere. We then outline a method for computing the scattering amplitudes based on Hamilton-Jacobi structure of Painlevé, and discuss the implications of the generic result to black hole complementarity.

Spinors and the Weyl Tensor Classification in Six Dimensions

A spinorial approach to 6-dimensional differential geometry is constructed and used to analyze tensor fields of low rank, with special attention to the Weyl tensor. We perform a study similar to the 4-dimensional case, making full use of the SO(6) symmetry to uncover results not easily seen in the tensorial approach. Using spinors, we propose a classification of the Weyl tensor by reinterpreting it as a map from 3-vectors to 3-vectors. This classification is shown to be intimately related to the integrability of maximally isotropic subspaces, establishing a natural framework to generalize the Goldberg-Sachs theorem. We work in complexified spaces, showing that the results for any signature can be obtained by taking the desired real slice.

Kerr-CFT From Black-Hole Thermodynamics

We analyze the near-horizon limit of a general black hole with two commuting killing vector fields in the limit of zero temperature. We use black hole thermodynamics methods to relate asymptotic charges of the complete spacetime to those obtained in the near-horizon limit. We then show that some diffeomorphisms do alter asymptotic charges of the full spacetime, even though they are defined in the near horizon limit and, therefore, count black hole states. We show that these conditions are essentially the same as considered in the Kerr/CFT corresponcence. From the algebra constructed from these diffeomorphisms, one can extract its central charge and then obtain the black hole entropy by use of Cardy's formula.

Crumpled Wires and Liouville Field Theory

The study of the packing of a length of wire in a two dimensional domain is done using techniques of conformal maps. The resulting scaling properties are derived through the Coulomb gas formalism of Conformal Field Theories. An analogy is drawn between this system and the 2D gravitational -- or Liouville -- coupling of non-conformally invariant matter in two dimensions.

A Note on Tachyon Moduli and Closed Strings

The collective behavior of the SL(2,R) covariant brane states of non-critical c=1 string theory found in a previous work, is studied in the Fermi liquid approximation. It is found that such states mimick the coset WZW model, whereas only by further restrictions one recovers the double-scaling limit which was purported to be equivalent to closed string models. Another limit is proposed, inspired by the tachyon condensation ideas, where the spectrum is the same of two-dimensional string theory. We close by noting some strange connections between vacuum states of the theory in their different interpretations.

Tachyon Effective Dynamics and de Sitter Vacua

We show that the DBI action for the singlet sector of the tachyon in two-dimensional string theory has a SL(2,R) symmetry, a real-time counterpart of the ground ring. The action can be rewritten as that of point particles moving in a de Sitter space, whose coordinates are given by the value of the eigenvalue and time. The symmetry then manifests as the isometry group of de Sitter space in two dimensions. We use this fact to write the collective field theory for a large number of branes, which has a natural interpretation as a fermion field in this de Sitter space. After spending some time building geometrical insight on facts about the condensation process, the state corresponding to a sD-brane is identified and standard results in quantum field theory in curved space-time are used to compute the backreaction of the thermal background.

Closed String Tachyon Condensation and Worldsheet Inflation

Closed string tachyon condensation in spacetime generates potentials on the worldsheet that model two-dimensional inflationary cosmology. These models illustrate and elucidate a variety of aspects of inflation, in particular the generation of quantum fluctuations and their back-reaction on geometry. We exhibit a class of Liouville gravity models coupled to matter that can exhibit, for example: (a) pure de Sitter gravity; (b) slow-roll inflation; (c) topological inflation; and (d) graceful exit into an FRW phase. The models also provide a quantitative testing ground for ideas about the origin of inflation, such as the various `no-boundary/tunnelling' proposals, and the `eternal/chaotic' inflationary scenario. We suggest an alternative mechanism for quantum creation of cosmological spacetimes which, in the context of the model, provides a natural explanation for why the typical FRW cosmology at large scales underwent a period of inflation at small scale.

Dwelling on de Sitter

A careful reduction of the three-dimensional gravity to the Liouville description is performed, where all gauge fixing and on-shell conditions come from the definition of asymptotic de Sitter spaces. The roles of both past and future infinities are discussed and the conditions space-time evolution imposes on both Liouville fields are explicited. Space-times which correspond to non-equivalent profiles of the Liouville field at past and future infinities are shown to exist. The qualitative implications of this for any tentative dual theory are presented.

Three Dimensional de Sitter Gravity and the Correspondence

Certain aspects of three dimensional asymptotically de Sitter spaces are studied, with emphasis on the mapping between gravity observables and the representation of the conformal symmetry of the boundary. In particular, we show that non-real conformal weights for the boundary theory correspond to space-times that have non-zero angular momentum. Some miscellaneous results on the role of the holonomies and isometry groups are also presented.

Inflation and Holography in String Theory

The encoding of an inflating patch of space-time in terms of a dual theory is discussed. Following Bousso's interpretation of the holographic principle, we find that those are generically described not by states in the dual theory but by density matrices. We try to implement this idea on simple deformations of the AdS/CFT examples, and an argument is given as to why inflation is so elusive to string theory.
