Polarization observables in exclusive kaon photoproduction on the deuteron

Single and double polarization observables for kaon photoproduction on the deuteron are studied theoretically with modern hyperon-nucleon forces. The kinematical region of the kaon scattered forward with large momentum is thoroughly investigated where either the quasifree scattering leading to the kaon and hyperon or the final-state interaction between hyperon and nucleon are expected. The quasifree scatterings show characteristic peaks in the inclusive cross sections. The final-state interaction effects are significant, especially around the Lambda-N and Sigma-N thresholds. The double polarization C_z is found to be sensitive to the final-state interaction effects. Precise data would help to clarify the property of the Lambda-N--Sigma-N interaction and also help to extract the information on the elementary amplitude from the quasifree scattering region.

K0 photoproduction on the deuteron and the extraction of the elementary amplitude

The photoproduction of K0 on the deuteron has been investigated with the inclusion of YN and KN final-state interaction (FSI), as well as the pion-mediated process gamma d --> pi NN --> KYN. The YN rescattering effects for the inclusive cross section are found to be large in the threshold regions. Polarization observables show sizable FSI effects at larger kaon and hyperon angles. It is shown that the extraction of the elementary gamma N --> KY amplitude is possible in the quasi-free scattering region where FSI effects are negligible. Furthermore, the cross sections in this region are large, indicating that measurements in this kinematical region are favored.

Measurement of the reaction gamma p --> K0 Sigma+ at photon energies up to 2.6 GeV

The reaction gamma p --> K0 Sigma+ was measured in the photon energy range from threshold up to 2.6 GeV with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher facility, ELSA, in Bonn. Results are presented on the reaction cross section and the polarization of the Sigma+ as a function of the kaon production angle in the centre-of-mass system, cos(Theta_K^{c.m.}), and the photon energy. The cross section is lower and varies less with photon energy and kaon production angle than that of gamma p --> K+ Sigma0. The Sigma+ is polarized predominantly at cos(Theta_K^{c.m.}) \approx 0. The data presented here are more precise than previous ones obtained with SAPHIR and extend the photon energy range to higher values. They are compared to isobar model calculations.

Dynamical baryon resonances from chiral unitarity

We report on the latests developments in the field of baryonic resonances generated from the meson-baryon interaction in coupled channels using a chiral unitary approach. The collection of resonances found in different strangeness and isospin sectors can be classified into SU(3) multiplets. The Lambda(1405) emerges as containing the effect of two poles of the scattering amplitude and various reactions that might preferentially select one or the other pole are discussed.

An EFT for the weak $ΛN$ interaction

The nonleptonic weak $|ΔS|=1$ $ΛN$ interaction, responsible for the dominant, nonmesonic decay of all but the lightest hypernuclei, is studied in the framework of an effective field theory. The long-range physics is described through tree-level exchange of the SU(3) Goldstone bosons ($π$ and $K$), while the short-range potential is parametrized in terms of lowest-order contact terms obtained from the most general non-derivative local four-fermion interaction. Fitting to available weak hypernuclear decay rates for $^5_Λ{\rm He}$, $^{11}_Λ{\rm B}$ and $^{12}_Λ{\rm C}$ yields reasonable values for the low-energy constants.

Kaon Photoproduction in the Feynman and Regge Theories

Kaon photoproduction on the nucleon has been investigated in the isobar (Feynman) and Regge frameworks. Two possible combinations of the theories are discussed. Results are compared with present experimental data.

Photoproduction of Theta+ on the nucleon and deuteron

Photoproduction of the pentaquark particle Theta^+ on the nucleon has been studied by using an isobar and a Regge model. Using the isobar model, total cross sections around 100 nb for the gamma n --> K- Theta+ channel and 400 nb for the gamma p --> {\bar K}0 Theta+ process are obtained. The inclusion of the K* intermediate state yields a substantially large effect, especially in the gamma p --> {\bar K}0 Theta+ process. The Regge approach predicts smaller cross sections, i.e., less than 100 nb (20 nb) for the process on the neutron (proton). By using an elementary operator from the isobar model, cross sections for the process on a deuteron are predicted.

Rescattering effects and two-step process in kaon photoproduction on the deuteron

Kaon photoproduction on the deuteron is investigated by considering YN and KN rescattering and the two-step process gamma d --> pi NN --> KYN. A strong enhancement in the total cross section is found from the two-step process. YN rescattering has remarkable effects in the inclusive and exclusive cross section, while the effect of KN rescattering is much less important.

Missing Resonances in Kaon Photoproduction on the Nucleon

New kaon photoproduction data on a proton, gamma + p --> K+ + Lambda, are analyzed using a multipole approach. The background terms are given in terms of gauge invariant, crossing symmetric, Born diagrams with hadronic form factors, while the resonances are parameterized using Breit-Wigner forms. Preliminary results suggest a number of new resonances, as predicted by many quark model studies. A comparison between the extracted multipoles and those obtained from KAON-MAID is presented.

A study of pentaquarks on the lattice with overlap fermions

We present a quenched lattice QCD calculation of spin-1/2 five-quark states with $uudd\bar{s}$ quark content for both positive and negative parities. We do not observe any bound pentaquark state in these channels for either I = 0 or I =1. The states we found are consistent with KN scattering states which are checked to exhibit the expected volume dependence of the spectral weight. The results are based on overlap-fermion propagators on two lattices, 12^3 x 28 and 16^3 x 28, with the same lattice spacing of 0.2 fm, and pion mass as low as ~ 180 MeV.

Measurement of Inverse Pion Photoproduction at Energies Spanning the N(1440) Resonance

Differential cross sections for the process pi^- p -> gamma n have been measured at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Alternating Gradient Synchrotron with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer. Measurements were made at 18 pion momenta from 238 to 748 MeV/c, corresponding to E_gamma for the inverse reaction from 285 to 769 MeV. The data have been used to evaluate the gamma n multipoles in the vicinity of the N(1440) resonance. We compare our data and multipoles to previous determinations. A new three-parameter SAID fit yields 36 +/- 7 (GeV)^-1/2 X 10^-3 for the A^n_1/2 amplitude of the P_11.

Dynamical Generation of Hyperon Resonances

In this talk we report on how, using a chiral unitary approach for the meson--baryon interactions, two octets of $J^π=1/2^-$ baryon states and a singlet are generated dynamically, resulting in the case of strangeness $S=-1$ in two poles of the scattering matrix close to the nominal $Λ(1405)$ resonance. We suggest experiments which could show evidence for the existence of these states.

Lowest Order Effective Field Theory for the weak $ΛN$ interaction

The $|ΔS|=1$ $ΛN$ interaction, responsible for the decay of hypernuclei, is studied by means of an Effective Field Theory where the long range physics is described by pion and kaon exchange mechanisms, and its short range counterpart is obtained from the most general non-derivative local four-fermion interaction. We show that, including the Lowest Order Parity Conserving contact terms, allows us to reproduce the total decay rates for $^5_Λ{\rm He}$, $^{11}_Λ{\rm B}$ and $^{12}_Λ{\rm C}$ with a reasonable value of ${\hat χ^2}$, while in order to get a prediction for the Parity Violating (PV) asymmetry compatible with experiments, we have to include the Lowest Order PV contact pieces.

Chiral dynamics in systems with strangeness

In this talk a brief review of several problems involving systems with strangeness is made. In the first place one shows how the $Λ(1405)$, $Λ(1670)$ and $Σ(1620)$ states, for $S = -1$, and the $Ξ(1620)$ for $S= -2$ are generated dynamically in the context of unitarized chiral perturbation theory. The results for the $\bar{K}N$ interaction are then used to evaluate the $K^- d$ scattering length. Results obtained for the kaon selfenergy in a nuclear medium within this approach, with application to $K^-$ atoms, are also mentioned. Finally a few words are said about recent developments in the weak decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei and the puzzle of the $Γ_n/Γ_p$ ratio.

Chiral unitary approach to hadron spectroscopy

The s-wave meson-baryon interaction in the $S = -1$, $S= 0$ and $S= -2$ sectors is studied by means of coupled channels, using the lowest-order chiral Lagrangian and the N/D method or equivalently the Bethe-Salpeter equation to implement unitarity. This chiral approach leads to the dynamical generation of the $Λ(1405)$, $Λ(1670)$ and $Σ(1620)$ states for $S = -1$, the $N^*(1535)$ for $S= 0$ and the $Ξ(1620)$ for $S= -2$. We look for poles in the complex plane and extract the couplings of the resonances to the different final states. This allows identifying the $Λ(1405)$ and the $Λ(1670)$ resonances with $\bar{K}N$ and $KΞ$ quasibound states, respectively. Our results are found to be incompatible with the measured properties of the $Ξ(1690)$ resonance, thus ruling this state out as the remaining member of this octet of dynamically generated resonances. We therefore assign $1/2^-$ for the spin and parity of the $Ξ(1620)$ resonance as the $S=-2$ member of the lowest-lying $1/2^-$ octet.

Dispersion relation analysis of neutral pion photo- and electroproduction at threshold using the MAID and SAID solutions

Neutral pion photo- and electroproduction at threshold is analyzed in the framework of dispersion relations. For this purpose, we evaluate the real threshold amplitudes in terms of Born contributions and dispersion integrals determined by the imaginary parts of the MAID and SAID multipoles. The results show considerable cancellations between Born terms and resonance contributions. Good agreement with the data is found for photoproduction. While our dispersion analysis suggests considerable discrepancies for electroproduction, the present state of the experimental multipole analysis at finite Q^2 does not permit drawing conclusions at this time.

On the spin, parity and nature of the $Ξ(1620)$ resonance

Using a unitary extension of chiral perturbation theory with a lowest-order s-wave SU(3) chiral Lagrangian we study low-energy meson-baryon scattering in the strangeness $S=-2$ sector. A scattering-matrix pole is found around 1606 MeV which corresponds to an s-wave $Ξ$ resonance with $J^P=1/2^-$. We identify this resonance with the $Ξ(1620)$ state, quoted in the Particle Data Book with $I=1/2$ but with unknown spin and parity. The addition of the $S=-2$ state to the recently computed $Λ(1670)$, $Σ(1620)$ and N(1535) states completes the octet of $J^P=1/2^-$ resonances dynamically generated in this chiral unitary approach.

Low lying S=-1 excited baryons and chiral symmetry

The s-wave meson-baryon interaction in the $S = -1$ sector is studied by means of coupled-channels, using the lowest-order chiral Lagrangian and the N/D method to implement unitarity. The loops are regularized using dimensional renormalization. In addition to the previously studied $Λ(1405)$, employing this chiral approach leads to the dynamical generation of two more s-wave hyperon resonances, the $Λ(1670)$ and $Σ(1620)$ states. We make comparisons with experimental data and look for poles in the complex plane obtaining the couplings of the resonances to the different final states. This allows us to identify the $Λ(1405)$ and the $Λ(1670)$ resonances with $\bar{K}N$ and $KΞ$ quasibound states, respectively.
