Contributions of vector meson photoproduction to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule

An improved version of a recently developed quark model approach to vector meson photoproduction is applied to the investigation of contributions of vector meson photoproduction to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. We find that the sum rule converges at a few GeV's. Contributions to the proton channel are found to be small while to the neutron are relatively large.

Recent results on the nonmesonic weak decay of hypernuclei within a one-meson-exchange model

We update our previous results for the nonmesonic decay of $^{12}_Λ$C and $^5_Λ$He. We pay special attention to the role played by Final State Intreractions on the decay observables. We follow a One-Meson-Exchange model which includes the exchange of the $π, ρ, K, K^*, η$ and $ω$ mesons. We also present recent predictions for different observables concerning the decay of the doubly strange $^6_{ΛΛ}$He hypernucleus.

Quark model predictions for $K^*$ photoproduction on the proton

The photoproduction of $K^*$ vector mesons is investigated in a quark model with an effective Lagrangian. Including both baryon resonance excitations and {\it t}-channel exchanges, observables for the reactions $γp\to K^{*0}Σ^+$ and $γp\to K^{*+}Σ^0$ are predicted, using the SU(3)-flavor-blind assumption of non-perturbative QCD.

Novel Weak Decays in Doubly Strange Systems

The strangeness-changing ($ΔS = 1$) weak baryon-baryon interaction is studied through the nonmesonic weak decay of double-$Λ$ hypernuclei. Besides the usual nucleon-induced decay $ΛN \to N N$ we discuss novel hyperon-induced decay modes $ΛΛ\to ΛN$ and $ΛΛ\to ΣN$. These reactions provide unique access to the exotic $ΛΛ$K and $ΛΣ$K vertices which place new constraints on Chiral Pertubation Theory ($χ$PT) in the weak SU(3) sector. Within a meson-exchange framework, we use the pseudoscalar $π,η,K$ octet for the long-range part while parametrizing the short-range part through the vector mesons $ρ, ω, K^*$. Realistic baryon-baryon forces for the $S=0,-1$ and -2 sectors account for the strong interaction in the initial and final states. For $^6_{ΛΛ}$He the new hyperon-induced decay modes account for up to 4% of the total nonmesonic decay rate. Predictions are made for all possible nonmesonic decay modes.

Dynamical meson-baryon resonances with chiral Lagrangians

The s-wave meson-baryon interaction is studied using the lowest-order chiral Lagrangian in a unitary coupled-channels Bethe-Salpeter equation. In the strangeness $S=-1$ sector the low-energy $K^- p$ dynamics leads to the dynamical generation of the $Λ(1405)$ as a ${\bar K}N$ state, along with a good description of the $K^- p$ scattering observables. At higher energies, the $Λ(1670)$ is also found to be generated dynamically as a $K Ξ$ quasibound state for the first time. For strangeness S=0, it is the $S_{11}(1535)$ resonance that emerges from the coupled-channels equations, leading to a satisfactory description of meson-baryon scattering observables in the energy region around the $S_{11}(1535)$. We speculate on the possible dynamical generation of $Ξ$ resonances within the chiral $S=-2$ sector as ${\bar K} Λ$ or ${\bar K} Σ$ quasibound states.

Electromagnetic K+ production on the deuteron with hyperon recoil polarization

Photo- and electroproduction processes of K+ on the deuteron are investigated theoretically. Modern hyperon-nucleon forces as well as an updated kaon production operator on the nucleon are used. Sizable effects of the hyperon-nucleon final state interaction are seen in various observables. Especially the photoproduction double polarization observable C_z is shown to provide a handle to distinguish different hyperon-nucleon force models.

Hypernuclear Physics with Photons

We review the opportunities and challenges in the field of hypernuclear physics with electromagnetic probes. An overview is presented regarding our current understanding of the elementary production process on the nucleon. This amplitude is then used in the nuclear environment to study the hyperon-nucleon (YN) interaction. We discuss two scenarios: hypernuclear excitation that allows the investigation of hypernuclear structure and the bound Lambda in the nucleus, and quasifree kaon production on the deuteron and on nuclei, which permits a more direct access to the YN force. Specific examples are given for few-body systems and shell-model nuclei.

Nucleon Resonances in Meson Nucleon Scattering with Strangeness Production

An effective Lagrangian model in a coupled channels framework is applied to extract nucleon resonance parameters. In the K-matrix approximation, we simultaneously analyze all the available data for the transitions from pi N to five possible meson-baryon final states, pi N, pipi N, eta N, K Lambda, and KSigma, in the energy range from pi N threshold up to W = 2 GeV. In this work, we focus our efforts on the K Sigma channel. In particular, we include a set of Delta resonances around 1900 MeV: the S31(1900), P31(1910), and P33(1920) states. In most cases the parameters of nucleon resonances determined by the fits are consistent with the commonly accepted values in the literature. We find that in the low-energy region, the S11(1650), P11(1710), and P13(1720) states are important for the p(pi-,K0)Sigma0 and p(pi-,K+)Sigma- processes while the P33(1600) and D33(1700) states are significant for the pure I=3/2 reaction p(pi+,K+)Sigma+. In the high energy region, we find a D13 state at 1945 MeV which is important for the p(pi-,K0)Sigma0 reaction while the Delta resonances around 1900 MeV show up significantly in the p(pi-,K+)Sigma- and p(pi+,K+)Sigma+ processes.

Missing Nucleon Resonances in Kaon Production with Pions and Photons

Resonances with strong couplings to strangeness channels are investigated in a coupled-channels framework of kaon production with pions and photons. We find evidence for an additional D13 resonance around 1900 MeV that has a significant decay width into the K Lambda final state. Such a state has been predicted in a relativistic quark model at 1960 MeV with significant gamma N and K Lambda branching ratios.

Kaon photoproduction on the nucleon: overview of some applications

Some applications of the elementary kaon photoproduction process are discussed: the investigation of missing resonances in the p(gamma,K+)Lambda channel, the role of the P_{13}(1720) state in the p(gamma,K0)Sigma+ channel, and the calculation of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule. For the latter, we present an extension of our previous study to higher energies.

Quasifree Kaon Photoproduction on Nuclei

Investigations of the quasifree reaction A$(γ, K Y)$B are presented in the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA). For this purpose, we present a revised tree-level model of elementary kaon photoproduction that incorporates hadronic form factors consistent with gauge invariance, uses SU(3) values for the Born couplings and uses resonances consistent with multi-channel analyses. The potential of exclusive quasifree kaon photoproduction on nuclei to reveal details of the hyperon-nucleus interaction is examined. Detailed predictions for the coincidence cross section, the photon asymmetry, and the hyperon polarization and their sensitivities to the ingredients of the model are obtained for all six production channels. Under selected kinematics these observables are found to be sensitive to the hyperon-nucleus final state interaction. Some polarization observables are found to be insensitive to distortion effects, making them ideal tools to search for possible medium modifications of the elementary amplitude.

Phenomenological aspects of kaon photoproduction on the nucleon

Using an isobar model which can reproduce the existing experimental data of kaon photoproduction on the nucleon we investigate some related phenomenological aspects, i.e. the hadronic form factors, contributions of kaon-hyperon final states to the anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon, and missing nucleon resonances. By reggeizing the appropriate propagators we extend the model to the higher photon energy regime.

Hyperon polarization in kaon photoproduction from the deuteron

We analyze the reaction gamma + d --> K^+ + Lambda (Sigma) + N using the Nijmegen soft core hyperon-nucleon interactions NSC97f and NSC89 and a recently updated production operator for the gamma + N --> K^+ + Lambda(Sigma) processes. Significant effects of the YN final state interaction are found near both the K^+ Lambda N and K^+ Sigma N thresholds.

Alternative evaluations of halos in nuclei

Data for the scattering of 6He, 8He, 9Li, and 11Li from hydrogen are analyzed within a fully microscopic folding model of proton-nucleus scattering. Current data suggest that of these only 11Li has a noticeable halo. For 6He, we have also analysed the complementary reaction 6Li(gamma,pi)6He(gs). The available data for that reaction support the hypothesis that 6He may not be a halo nucleus. However, those data are scarce and there is clearly a need for more to elicit the microscopic structure of 6He.

A new resonance in K+Lambda electroproduction: the D_{13}(1895) and its electromagnetic form factors

New SAPHIR p(gamma,K+)Lambda total cross section data show a resonance structure at a total c.m. energy around 1900 MeV. We investigate this feature with an isobar model and find that the structure can be well explained by including a new D_{13} resonance at 1895 MeV. Such a state has been predicted by a relativistic quark model at 1960 MeV with significant gamma-N and K-Lambda branching ratios. We demonstrate how the measurement of single and double polarization observables can be used to obtain additional information on this resonance. Using recent (e,e'K+) JLab data from Hall C we extract the electromagnetic form factors of this state.

Inclusive $K^+$ and exclusive $K^+Y$ photoproduction on the deuteron: $Λ$- and $Σ$-threshold phenomena

Inclusive $K^+$ and exclusive $K^+Y$ photoproduction on the deuteron are investigated theoretically. Modern hyperon-nucleon forces and a recently updated kaon photoproduction operator for the $γ+N\to K^++Y$ process are used. Sizable effects of the hyperon-nucleon final state interaction are found near the $K^+ΛN$ and $K^+ΣN$ thresholds in the inclusive reaction. Angular distributions for the exclusive process show clear $YN$ final state interaction effects in certain kinematic regions. Precise data especially for the inclusive process around the $K^+ΣN$ threshold would help to clarify the strength and property of the $ΛN-ΣN$ interaction.

Evidence for a missing nucleon resonance in kaon photoproduction

New SAPHIR p(gamma,K+)Lambda total cross section data show a resonance structure at a total c.m. energy around 1900 MeV. We investigate this feature with an isobar model and find that the structure can be well explained by including a new D_{13} resonance at 1895 MeV. Such a state has been predicted by a relativistic quark model at 1960 MeV with significant gamma-N and K-Lambda branching ratios. We demonstrate how the measurement of the photon asymmetry can be used to further study this resonance. In addition, verification of the predicted large decay widths into the eta-N and eta'-N channels would allow distinguishing between other nearby D_{13} states.
