Multiferroic behavior in trimerized Mott insulators

We demonstrate multiferroic behavior in trimerized Mott insulators through interplay between spins and electric dipole moments resulting from electronic charge fluctuations in frustrated units. The model consists of stacked triangular layers of trimers with small intertrimer exchange interactions $J'$ and $J"$. Ferroelectric states coexist with ferro- or antiferromagnetic orderings depending on the value of the magnetic field $H$ and the sign of the interlayer exchange $J"$. The electric polarization undergoes abrupt changes as a function of $H$.

Dimensional crossover in the quasi-two-dimensional Ising-O(3) model

We present results of our Monte Carlo simulation of the Ising-O(3) model on the two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-2D lattices. This model is an effective classical model for the stacked square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model where the nearest neighbor ($J_1$) and next-nearest neighbor ($J_2$) couplings are frustrated and we assume that $J_2$ is dominant. We find an Ising ordered phase where the O(3) spins remain disordered in a moderate quasi-2D region. There is a single first order transition for a sufficiently large 3D coupling. Our results can provide a qualitative explanation on the experiments on ferropnictides, namely observed sequence and orders of the structural and magnetic transitions, in terms of the ratio between the inter-layer and intra-layer coupling.

Novel Polaron State for Single Impurity in a Bosonic Mott Insulator

We show that a single impurity embedded in a cold atom bosonic Mott insulator leads to a novel polaron that exhibits correlated motion with an effective mass and a linear size that nearly diverge at critical value of the on-site impurity-boson interaction strength. Cold atom technology can tune the polaron's properties and break up the composite particle into a deconfined impurity-hole and boson particle state at finite, controllable polaron momentum.

Antiferromagnetic Order in Pauli Limited Unconventional Superconductors

We develop a theory of the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in CeCoIn5. We show that in Pauli-limited nodal superconductors the nesting of the quasi-particle pockets induced by Zeeman pair-breaking leads to incommensurate AFM with the moment normal to the field. We compute the phase diagram and find a first order transition to the normal state at low temperatures, absence of normal state AFM, and coexistence of SC and AFM at high fields, in agreement with experiments. We also predict the existence of a new double-Q magnetic phase.

Multiferroic behavior in the new double-perovskite Lu$_2$MnCoO$_6$

We present a new member of the multiferroic oxides, Lu$_2$MnCoO$_6$, which we have investigated using X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, specific heat, magnetization, electric polarization, and dielectric constant measurements. This material possesses an electric polarization strongly coupled to a net magnetization below 35 K, despite the antiferromagnetic ordering of the $S = 3/2$ Mn$^{4+}$ and Co$^{2+}$ spins in an $\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ configuration along the c-direction. We discuss the magnetic order in terms of a condensation of domain boundaries between $\uparrow \uparrow$ and $\downarrow \downarrow$ ferromagnetic domains, with each domain boundary producing a net electric polarization due to spatial inversion symmetry breaking. In an applied magnetic field the domain boundaries slide, controlling the size of the net magnetization, electric polarization, and magnetoelectric coupling.

Vortex-induced dissipation in narrow current-biased thin-film superconducting strips

A vortex crossing a thin-film superconducting strip from one edge to the other, perpendicular to the bias current, is the dominant mechanism of dissipation for films of thickness d on the order of the coherence length XI; and of width w much narrower than the Pearl length LAMBDA >> w >> XI. At high bias currents, I* < I < Ic, the heat released by the crossing of a single vortex suffices to create a belt-like normal-state region across the strip, resulting in a detectable voltage pulse. Here Ic is the critical current at which the energy barrier vanishes for a single vortex crossing. The belt forms along the vortex path and causes a transition of the entire strip into the normal state. We estimate I* to be roughly Ic/3. Further, we argue that such "hot" vortex crossings are the origin of dark counts in photon detectors, which operate in the regime of metastable superconductivity at currents between I* and Ic. We estimate the rate of vortex crossings and compare it with recent experimental data for dark counts. For currents below I*, i.e., in the stable superconducting but resistive regime, we estimate the amplitude and duration of voltage pulses induced by a single vortex crossing.

Vortex Viscosity in Magnetic Superconductors Due to Radiation of Spin Waves

In type-II superconductors that contain a lattice of magnetic moments, vortices polarize the magnetic system inducing additional contributions to the vortex mass, vortex viscosity, and vortex-vortex interaction. Extra magnetic viscosity is caused by radiation of spin waves by a moving vortex. Like in the case of Cherenkov radiation, this effect has a characteristic threshold behavior and the resulting vortex viscosity may be comparable to the well-known Bardeen-Stephen contribution. The threshold behavior leads to an anomaly in the current-voltage characteristics, and a drop in dissipation for a current interval that is determined by the magnetic excitation spectrum.

Quantum fluctuations and strong mass renormalization in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2

In a number of quantum paramagnets, magnetic field can induce a quantum phase transition to an antiferromagnetic state which exists for a range of fields Hc1 < H < Hc2. Generally, these compounds exhibit a significant asymmetry in their properties at low- and high-field transitions. Here we present detailed specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 together with analytical and numerical results. We show that the asymmetry is caused by a strong renormalization of the effective mass of spin excitations due to quantum fluctuations for H<Hc1 that are absent for H<Hc2.

Superconductivity in strongly repulsive fermions: the role of kinetic-energy frustration

We discuss a physical mechanism of a non-BCS nature which can stabilize a superconducting state in a {\it strongly repulsive} electronic system. By considering the two-dimensional Hubbard model with spatially modulated electron hoppings, we demonstrate how kinetic-energy frustration can lead to robust d-wave superconductivity at {\it arbitrarily} large on-site repulsion. This phenomenon should be observable in experiments using fermionic atoms, e.g. ${}^{40}K$, in specially prepared optical lattices.

Tunable magnetic interaction at the atomic scale in oxide heterostructures

We report on a systematic study of a number of structurally identical but chemically distinct transition metal oxides in order to determine how the material-specific properties such as the composition and the strain affect the properties at the interface of heterostructures. Our study considers a series of structures containing two layers of ferromagnetic SrRuO3, with antiferromagnetic insulating manganites sandwiched in between. The results demonstrate how to control the strength and relative orientation of interfacial ferromagnetism in correlated electron materials by means of valence state variation and substrate-induced strain, respectively.

Competing chiral and multipolar electric phases in the extended Falicov-Kimball model

We study the effects of interband hybridization within the framework of an extended Falicov-Kimball model with itinerant $c$ and $f$ electrons. An explicit interband hybridization breaks the U(1) symmetry associated with the conservation of the difference between the total number of particles in each band. As a result, the degeneracy between multipolar electric and chiral orderings is lifted. We analyze the weak- and strong-coupling limits of the $c$-$f$ electron Coulomb interaction at zero temperature, and derive the corresponding mean-field quantum phase diagrams at half-filling for a model defined on a square lattice.

Crossover Behavior from Decoupled Criticality

We study the thermodynamic phase transition of a spin Hamiltonian comprising two 3D magnetic sublattices. Each sublattice contains XY spins coupled by the usual bilinear exchange, while spins in different sublattices only interact via biquadratic exchange. This Hamiltonian is an effective model for XY magnets on certain frustrated lattices such as body centered tetragonal. By performing a cluster Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the crossover from the 3D-XY fixed point (decoupled sublattices) and find a systematic flow toward a first-order transition without a separatrix or a new fixed point. This strongly suggests that the correct asymptotic behavior is a first-order transition.

Stability of spontaneous quantum Hall state in the Triangular Kondo-lattice model

We study the behavior of the quarter-filled Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice by combining a zero-temperature variational approach and finite-temperature Monte-Carlo simulations. For intermediate coupling between itinerant electrons and classical moments ${\bf S}_j$, we find a thermodynamic phase transition into an exotic spin ordering with uniform scalar spin chirality and $< {\bf S}_j >=0$. The state exhibits spontaneous quantum Hall effect. We also study how its properties are affected by application of an external magnetic field.

Effective Low-Energy Model for f-Electron Delocalization

We consider a Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) with a momentum-dependent inter-band hybridization that is strongly suppressed near the Fermi level. Under these conditions, we reduce the PAM to an effective low-energy Hamiltonian, $H_{\rm eff}$, by expanding in the small parameter $V_0/t$ ( $V_0$ is the maximum inter-band hybridization amplitude and $t$ is the hopping integral of the broad band). The resulting model consists of a t-J f-band coupled via the Kondo exchange to the electrons in the broad band. $H_{\rm eff}$ allows for studying the f-electron delocalization transition. The result is a doping-induced Mott transition for the f-electron delocalization, which we demonstrate by density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations.

Anisotropic phase diagram of the frustrated spin dimer compound Ba3Mn2O8

Heat capacity and magnetic torque measurements are used to probe the anisotropic temperature-field phase diagram of the frustrated spin dimer compound Ba3Mn2O8 in the field range from 0T to 18T. For fields oriented along the c axis a single magnetically ordered phase is found in this field range, whereas for fields oriented along the a axis two distinct phases are observed. The present measurements reveal a surprising non-monotonic evolution of the phase diagram as the magnetic field is rotated in the [001]-[100] plane. The angle dependence of the critical field (Hc1) that marks the closing of the spin gap can be quantitatively accounted for using a minimal spin Hamiltonian comprising superexchange between nearest and next nearest Mn ions, the Zeeman energy and single ion anisotropy. This Hamiltonian also predicts a non-monotonic evolution of the transition between the two ordered states as the field is rotated in the a-c plane. However, the observed effect is found to be significantly larger in magnitude, implying that either this minimal spin Hamiltonian is incomplete or that the magnetically ordered states have a slightly different structure than previously proposed.

The Canted Spiral: An Exact Ground State of XXZ Zigzag Ladders

We derive the exact ground states for a one dimensional family of $S=1/2$ XXZ Hamiltonians on the zigzag ladder. These states exhibit true long range spiral order that spontaneously breaks the U(1) invariance of the Hamiltonian. Besides breaking a continuous symmetry in $d=1$, this spiral ordering has a ferromagnetic component along the symmetry axis that can take any value between zero and full saturation. In this sense, our canted spiral solutions are a generalization of the SU(2) Heisenberg ferromagnet to non-zero ordering wave-vectors of the transverse spin components. We extend this result to the $d=2$ anisotropic triangular lattice.

Asymmetric quintuplet condensation in the frustrated S=1 spin dimer compound Ba3Mn2O8

Ba3Mn2O8 is a spin-dimer compound based on pairs of S = 1, 3d2, Mn5+ ions arranged on a triangular lattice. Antiferromagnetic intradimer exchange leads to a singlet ground state in zero-field, with excited triplet and quintuplet states at higher energy. High field thermodynamic measurements are used to establish the phase diagram, revealing a substantial asymmetry of the quintuplet condensate. This striking effect, all but absent for the triplet condensate, is due to a fundamental asymmetry in quantum fluctuations of the paramagnetic phases near the various critical fields.

Field Induced Orbital Antiferromagnetism in Mott Insulators

We report on a new electromagnetic phenomenon that emerges in Mott insulators, i.e., materials that do not conduct electricity because of strong electronic Coulomb repulsion. The phenomenon manifests as antiferromagnetic ordering due to orbital electric currents which are spontaneously generated from the coupling between spin currents and an external homogenous magnetic field. This novel spin-charge current effect provides the mechanism to detect the so far elusive spin currents by means of unpolarized neutron scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance or muon spectroscopy. We illustrate this mechanism by solving a half-filled Hubbard model on a frustrated ladder, a simple but nontrivial case of strongly interacting electrons.
