Critical properties of the S=1 spin dimer compound Ba3Mn2O8

Ba3Mn2O8 is a hexagonally coordinated Mn5+ S=1 spin dimer system with small uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. 135,137Ba NMR spectroscopy is used to establish the lower critical field Hc1 of distinct field-induced phases for H parallel to c,H perpendicular to c, and measure the longitudinal (Ml) and transverse (Mt) magnetizations in the vicinity of the quantum critical point (QCP). Ml_parallel (T, Hc1), Ml_perpendicular (T, Hc1) are reproduced by solving a low-energy model for a dilute gas of interacting bosons. Ml_parallel(T goes to 0, H = Hc1) (Ml_perpendicular(T goes to 0, H = Hc1)) follows the expectation for a BEC (Ising-like) QCP.

Magnetic field-induced phase transitions in a weakly coupled s = 1/2 quantum spin dimer system Ba$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$

By using bulk magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), heat capacity, and neutron scattering techniques, we characterize the thermodynamic and quantum phase diagrams of Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Our ESR measurements indicate that the low field paramagnetic ground state is a mixed state of the singlet and the S$_z$ = 0 triplet for $H \perp c$. This suggests the presence of an intra-dimer Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction with a DM vector perpendicular to the c-axis.

Heavy holes: precursor to superconductivity in antiferromagnetic CeIn3

Numerous phenomenological parallels have been drawn between f- and d- electron systems in an attempt to understand their display of unconventional superconductivity. The microscopics of how electrons evolve from participation in large moment antiferromagnetism to superconductivity in these systems, however, remains a mystery. Knowing the origin of Cooper paired electrons in momentum space is a crucial prerequisite for understanding the pairing mechanism. Of especial interest are pressure-induced superconductors CeIn3 and CeRhIn5 in which disparate magnetic and superconducting orders apparently coexist - arising from within the same f-electron degrees of freedom. Here we present ambient pressure quantum oscillation measurements on CeIn3 that crucially identify the electronic structure - potentially similar to high temperature superconductors. Heavy pockets of f-character are revealed in CeIn3, undergoing an unexpected effective mass divergence well before the antiferromagnetic critical field. We thus uncover the softening of a branch of quasiparticle excitations located away from the traditional spin-fluctuation dominated antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. The observed Fermi surface of dispersive f-electrons in CeIn3 could potentially explain the emergence of Cooper pairs from within a strong moment antiferromagnet.

Ferrotoroidic Moment as a Quantum Geometric Phase

We present a geometric characterization of the ferrotoroidic moment in terms of a set of Abelian Berry phases. We also introduce a fundamental complex quantity which provides an alternative way to calculate the ferrotoroidic moment and its moments, and is derived from a second order tensor. This geometric framework defines a natural computational approach for density functional and many-body theories.

Topological Confinement and Superconductivity

We derive a Kondo Lattice model with a correlated conduction band from a two-band Hubbard Hamiltonian. This mapping allows us to describe the emergence of a robust pairing mechanism in a model that only contains repulsive interactions. The mechanism is due to topological confinement and results from the interplay between antiferromagnetism and delocalization. By using Density-Matrix-Renormalization-Group (DMRG), we demonstrate that this mechanism leads to dominant superconducting correlations in a 1D-system.

Scalar spin chirality and quantum Hall effect on a triangular lattice

We study the Kondo Lattice and Hubbard models on a triangular lattice for band filling factor 3/4. We show that a simple non-coplanar chiral spin ordering (scalar spin chirality) is naturally realized in both models due to perfect nesting of the Fermi surface. The resulting triple-Q magnetic ordering is a natural counterpart of the collinear Neel ordering of the half-filled square lattice Hubbard model. We show that the obtained chiral phase exhibits a spontaneous quantum Hall-effect with sigma_{xy}= e^2/h.

Singlet-triplet dispersion reveals additional frustration in the triangular dimer compound Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$

We present single crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the S=1 dimerized quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The singlet-triplet dispersion reveals nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions between adjacent bilayers that compete against each other. Although the inter-bilayer exchange is comparable to the intra-bilayer exchange, this additional frustration reduces the effective coupling along the c-axis and leads to a quasi-two dimensional behavior. In addition, the obtained exchange values are able to reproduce the four critical fields in the phase diagram.

Fractalization drives crystalline states in a frustrated spin system

We measure a sequence of quantum Hall-like plateaux at 1/q: 9 >= q >= 2 and p/q = 2/9 fractions in the magnetisation with increasing magnetic field in the geometrically frustrated spin system SrCu2(BO3)2. We find that the entire observed sequence of plateaux is reproduced by solving the Hofstadter problem on the system lattice when short-range repulsive interactions are included, thus providing a sterling demonstration of bosons confined by a magnetic and lattice potential mimicking fermions in the extreme quantum limit.

Ordered magnetic phases of the frustrated spin-dimer compound Ba3Mn2O8

Ba3Mn2O8 is a spin-dimer compound based on pairs of S=1, 3d^2, Mn^{5+} ions arranged on a triangular lattice. Antiferromagnetic intradimer exchange leads to a singlet ground state in zero-field. Here we present the first results of thermodynamic measurements for single crystals probing the high-field ordered states of this material associated with closing the spin gap to the excited triplet states. Specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, and torque magnetometry measurements were performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T and temperatures down to 20 mK. For fields above H_{c1} ~ 8.7 T, these measurements reveal a single magnetic phase for H parallel to c, but two distinct phases (approximately symmetric about the center of the phase diagram) for H perpendicular to c. Analysis of the simplest possible spin Hamiltonian describing this system yields candidates for these ordered states corresponding to a simple spiral structure for H parallel to c, and to two distinct modulated phases for H perpendicular to c. Both single-ion anisotropy and geometric frustration play crucial roles in defining the phase diagram.

Dispersive magnetic excitations in the S=1 antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$

We present powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the S=1 dimerized antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The $T=1.4$ K magnetic spectrum exhibits a spin-gap of $Δ\approx 1.0$ meV and a dispersive spectrum with a bandwidth of approximately 1.5 meV. Comparison to coupled dimer models describe the dispersion and scattering intensity accurately and determine the exchange constants in Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The wave vector dependent scattering intensity confirms the proposed S=1 dimer bond. Temperature dependent measurements of the magnetic excitations indicate the presence of both singlet-triplet and thermally activated triplet-quintet excitations.

Ground state and thermal transitions in Field Induced spin-Supersolid Phase

We use a quantum Monte Carlo method to study the ground state and thermodynamic phase transitions of the spin supersolid phase in the S=1 Heisenberg model with uniaxial anisotropy. The thermal melting of the supersolid phase shows unqiue signatures in experimentally measurable observables. This Hamiltonian is a particular case of a more general and ubiquitous model that describes the low energy spectrum of a class of {\it isotropic} and {\it frustrated} spin systems. We also discuss some alternative realizations of spin supersolid states in real magnets.

Emergent Symmetry and Dimensional Reduction at a Quantum Critical Point

We show that the spatial dimensionality of the quantum critical point associated with Bose--Einstein condensation at T=0 is reduced when the underlying lattice comprises a set of layers coupled by a frustrating interaction. For this purpose, we use an heuristic mean field approach that is complemented and justified by a more rigorous renormalization group analysis. Due to the presence of an emergent symmetry, i.e. a symmetry of the ground state that is absent in the underlying Hamiltonian, a three--dimensional interacting Bose system undergoes a chemical potential tuned quantum phase transition that is strictly two dimensional. Our theoretical predictions for the critical temperature as a function of the chemical potential correspond very well with recent measurements in BaCuSi$_{2}$O$_{6}$.

Electronic Orbital Currents and Polarization in Mott Insulators

The standard view is that at low energies Mott insulators exhibit only magnetic properties while charge degrees of freedom are frozen out as the electrons become localized by a strong Coulomb repulsion. We demonstrate that this is in general not true: for certain spin textures {\it spontaneous circular electric currents} or {\it nonuniform charge distribution} exist in the ground state of Mott insulators. In addition, low-energy ``magnetic'' states contribute comparably to the dielectric and magnetic functions $ε_{ik}(ω)$ and $μ_{ik}(ω)$ leading to interesting phenomena such as rotation the electric field polarization and resonances which may be common for both functions producing a negative refraction index in a window of frequencies.

Using magnetostriction to measure the spin-spin correlation function and magnetoelastic coupling in the quantum magnet NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

We report a method for determining the spatial dependence of the magnetic exchange coupling, $dJ/dr$, from magnetostriction measurements of a quantum magnet. The organic Ni $S = 1$ system NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ exhibits lattice distortions in response to field-induced canted antiferromagnetism between $H_{c1} = 2.1$ T and $H_{c2} = 12.6$ T. We are able to model the magnetostriction in terms of uniaxial stress on the sample created by magnetic interactions between neighboring Ni atoms along the c-axis. The uniaxial strain is equal to $(1/E)dJ_c/dx_c < S_{\bf r} \cdot S_{{\bf r}+ {\bf e}_c} >$, where $E$, $J_c$, $x_c$ and ${\bf e}_c$ are the Young's modulus, the nearest neighbor (NN) exchange coupling, the variable lattice parameter, and the relative vector between NN sites along the c-axis. We present magnetostriction data taken at 25 mK together with Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the NN spin-spin correlation function that are in excellent agreement with each other. We have also measured Young's modulus using resonant ultrasound, and we can thus extract $dJ_c/dx_c = 2.5$ K/$Å$, yielding a total change in $J_c$ between $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$ of 5.5 mK or 0.25% in response to an 0.022% change in length of the sample.

Field Induced Supersolid Phase in Spin-One Heisenberg Models

We use quantum Monte Carlo methods to demonstrate that the quantum phase diagram of the S=1 Heisenberg model with uniaxial anisotropy contains an extended supersolid phase. We also show that this Hamiltonian is a particular case of a more general and ubiquitous model that describes the low energy spectrum of a class of {\it isotropic} and {\it frustrated} spin systems. This crucial result provides the required guidance for finding experimental realizations of a spin supersolid state.

Magnetic Excitations in the Spin-1 Anisotropic Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain System NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) is a quantum S=1 chain system with strong easy-pane anisotropy and a new candidate for the Bose-Einstein condensation of the spin degrees of freedom. ESR studies of magnetic excitations in DTN in fields up to 25 T are presented. Based on analysis of the single-magnon excitation mode in the high-field spin-polarized phase and previous experimental results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 077204 (2006)], a revised set of spin-Hamiltonian parameters is obtained. Our results yield $D=8.9$ K, $J_c=2.2$ K, and $J_{a,b}=0.18$ K for the anisotropy, intrachain, and interchain exchange interactions, respectively. These values are used to calculate the antiferromagnetic phase boundary, magnetization and the frequency-field dependence of two-magnon bound-state excitations predicted by theory and observed in DTN for the first time. Excellent quantitative agreement with experimental data is obtained.

Phase diagram and spin Hamiltonian of weakly-coupled anisotropic S=1/2 chains in CuCl2*2((CD3)2SO)

Field-dependent specific heat and neutron scattering measurements were used to explore the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chain compound CuCl2 * 2((CD3)2SO). At zero field the system acquires magnetic long-range order below TN=0.93K with an ordered moment of 0.44muB. An external field along the b-axis strengthens the zero-field magnetic order, while fields along the a- and c-axes lead to a collapse of the exchange stabilized order at mu0 Hc=6T and mu0 Hc=3.5T, respectively (for T=0.65K) and the formation of an energy gap in the excitation spectrum. We relate the field-induced gap to the presence of a staggered g-tensor and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which lead to effective staggered fields for magnetic fields applied along the a- and c-axes. Competition between anisotropy, inter-chain interactions and staggered fields leads to a succession of three phases as a function of field applied along the c-axis. For fields greater than mu0 Hc, we find a magnetic structure that reflects the symmetry of the staggered fields. The critical exponent, beta, of the temperature driven phase transitions are indistinguishable from those of the three-dimensional Heisenberg magnet, while measurements for transitions driven by quantum fluctuations produce larger values of beta.
