Phase diagram of the one-dimensional, two-channel Kondo lattice model

Employing the density matrix renormalization group method and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we study the phase diagram of the SU(2)xSU(2) Kondo lattice model in one dimension. We show that, at quarter filling, the system can exist in two phases depending on the coupling strength. The weak-coupling phase is dominated by RKKY exchange correlations while the strong-coupling phase is characterized by strong antiferromagnetic correlations of the channel degree of freedom. These two phases are separated by a quantum critical point. For conduction-band fillings of less than one quarter, we find a paramagnetic metallic phase at weak coupling and a ferromagnetic phase at moderate to strong coupling.

The dimerized phase of ionic Hubbard models

We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the ionic Hubbard model at half filling, extended to include nearest-neighbor repulsion. Using a spin-particle transformation, the effective model is mapped onto simple spin-1 models in two particular cases. Using another spin-particle transformation, a slightly modified model is mapped into an SU(3) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model whose exact ground state is known to be spontaneously dimerized. From the effective models several properties of the dimerized phase are discussed, like ferroelectricity and fractional charge excitations. Using bosonization and recent developments in the theory of macroscopic polarization, we show that the polarization is proportional to the charge of the elementary excitations.

Exact ground states of a frustrated 2D magnet: deconfined fractional excitations at a first order quantum phase transition

We introduce a frustrated spin 1/2 Hamiltonian which is an extension of the two dimensional $J_1 - J_2$ Heisenberg model. The ground states of this model are exactly obtained at a first order quantum phase transition between two regions with different valence bond solid order parameters. At this point, the low energy excitations are deconfined spinons and spin-charge separation occurs under doping in the limit of low concentration of holes. In addition, this point is characterized by the proliferation of topological defects that signal the emergence of $Z_2$ gauge symmetry.

Magnetic Field-Induced Condensation of Triplons in Han Purple Pigment BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$

Besides being an ancient pigment, BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ is a quasi-2D magnetic insulator with a gapped spin dimer ground state. The application of strong magnetic fields closes this gap creating a gas of bosonic spin triplet excitations called triplons. The topology of the spin lattice makes BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ an ideal candidate for studying the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons as a function of the external magnetic field, which acts as a chemical potential. In agreement with quantum Monte Carlo numerical simulations, we observe a distinct lambda-anomaly in the specific heat together with a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility upon cooling down to liquid Helium temperatures.

Stripes, topological order, and deconfinement in a planar t-Jz model

We determine the quantum phase diagram of a two-dimensional bosonic t-Jz model as a function of the lattice anisotropy gamma, using a quantum Monte Carlo loop algorithm. We show analytically that the low-energy sectors of the bosonic and the fermionic t-Jz models become equivalent in the limit of small gamma. In this limit, the ground state represents a static stripe phase characterized by a non-zero value of a topological order parameter. This phase remains up to intermediate values of gamma, where there is a quantum phase transition to a phase-segregated state or a homogeneous superfluid with dynamic stripe fluctuations depending on the ratio Jz/t.

Electron Spin Resonance of SrCu2(BO3)2 at High Magnetic Field

We calculate the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional dimer spin liquid SrCu2(BO3)2 as a function of magnetic field B. Using the standard Lanczos method, we solve a Shastry-Sutherland Hamiltonian with additional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) terms which are crucial to explain different qualitative aspects of the ESR spectra. In particular, a nearest-neighbor DM interaction with a non-zero D_z component is required to explain the low frequency ESR lines for B || c. This suggests that crystal symmetry is lowered at low temperatures due to a structural phase transition.

High Field Specific Heat of 2D Quantum Spin System SrCu2(BO3)2

We report measurements of the specific heat of the quantum spin liquid system SrCu2(BO3)2 in continuous magnetic fields H of up to 33 T. The specific heat vs temperature at zero field shows an anomaly at 8 K, marking the opening of a gap in the spin singlet excitations. At fields H~12 T, we clearly see a second anomaly that shifts to lower temperatures as H is increased. We attribute its origin to single triplet excitations of the singlet dimer ground state. This conclusion is supported by calculations of the specific heat, which reproduce the experimental data, made using the finite temperature Lanczos method to solve a Shastry-Sutherland Hamiltonian including nearest and next-nearest neighbor Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions. The parameters used to fit the data are the exchange constants J = 74 K and J'/J = 0.62, and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling constants |D|=6.1K, and $|D'|=2.2K.

Algebraic Approach to Interacting Quantum Systems

We present an algebraic framework for interacting extended quantum systems to study complex phenomena characterized by the coexistence and competition of different states of matter. We start by showing how to connect different (spin-particle-gauge) {\it languages} by means of exact mappings (isomorphisms) that we name {\it dictionaries} and prove a fundamental theorem establishing when two arbitrary languages can be connected. These mappings serve to unravel symmetries which are hidden in one representation but become manifest in another. In addition, we establish a formal link between seemingly unrelated physical phenomena by changing the language of our model description. This link leads to the idea of {\it universality} or equivalence. Moreover, we introduce the novel concept of {\it emergent symmetry} as another symmetry guiding principle. By introducing the notion of {\it hierarchical languages}, we determine the quantum phase diagram of lattice models (previously unsolved) and unveil hidden order parameters to explore new states of matter. Hierarchical languages also constitute an essential tool to provide a unified description of phases which compete and coexist. Overall, our framework provides a simple and systematic methodology to predict and discover new kinds of orders. Another aspect exploited by the present formalism is the relation between condensed matter and lattice gauge theories through quantum link models. We conclude discussing applications of these dictionaries to the area of quantum information and computation with emphasis in building new models of computation and quantum programming languages.

Electronic Ferroelectricity in the Falicov-Kimball Model

I show that a spontaneous electric polarization is developed in the solution of the Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) by mapping the strong coupling limit of the model into an $xxz$ spin 1/2 model with a magnetic field. In this way, I can determine the phase diagram of the strongly interacting model that shows a transition to a mixed valence regime containing two phases: orbital ordering and Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons with a built in electric polarization. The results are extended to the intermeditate and weak coupling regimes.

Intermediate Coupling Theory of Electronic Ferroelectricity

We calculate the quantum phase diagram of an extended Falicov-Kimball model for one and two-dimensional systems in the intermediate coupling regime. Even though some features of the phase diagram are obtained analytically, the main results are calculated with a constrained path Monte Carlo technique. We find that this regime is dominated by a Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons with a built-in electric polarization. The inclusion of a finite hybridization between the bands removes the condensate but reinforces the ferroelectricity.

Exact Bond Ordered Ground State for the Transition Between the Band and the Mott Insulator

We derive an effective Hamiltonian $H_{eff}$ for an ionic Hubbard chain, valid for $t\ll U,Δ$, where $t$ is the hopping, $U$ the Coulomb repulsion, and $Δ$ the charge transfer energy. $H_{eff}$ is the minimal model for describing the transition from the band insulator (BI) ($Δ-U\gg t$) and the Mott insulator (MI) ($U-Δ\gg t$). Using spin-particle transformations (Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{86}, 1082 (2001)), we map $H_{eff}(U=Δ)$ into an SU(3) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model whose exact ground state is known. In this way, we show rigorously that a spontaneously dimerized insulating ferroelectric phase appears in the transition region between the BI and MI.

Thermodynamic properties of excess-oxygen-doped La2CuO4.11 near a simultaneous transition to superconductivity and long-range magnetic order

We have measured the specific heat and magnetization {\it versus} temperature in a single crystal sample of superconducting La$_{2}$CuO$_{4.11}$ and in a sample of the same material after removing the excess oxygen, in magnetic fields up to 15 T. Using the deoxygenated sample to subtract the phonon contribution, we find a broad peak in the specific heat, centered at 50 K. This excess specific heat is attributed to fluctuations of the Cu spins possibly enhanced by an interplay with the charge degrees of freedom, and appears to be independent of magnetic field, up to 15 T. Near the superconducting transition $T_{c}$($H$=0)= 43 K, we find a sharp feature that is strongly suppressed when the magnetic field is applied parallel to the crystallographic c-axis. A model for 3D vortex fluctuations is used to scale magnetization measured at several magnetic fields. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the c-axis, the only observed effect is a slight shift in the superconducting transition temperature.

Ferromagnetism in the Strong Hybridization Regime of the Periodic Anderson Model

We determine exactly the ground state of the one-dimensional periodic Anderson model (PAM) in the strong hybridization regime. In this regime, the low energy sector of the PAM maps into an effective Hamiltonian that has a ferromagnetic ground state for any electron density between half and three quarters filling. This rigorous result proves the existence of a new magnetic state that was excluded in the previous analysis of the mixed valence systems.

Hubbard Model on Decorated Lattices

We introduce a family of lattices for which the Hubbard model and its natural extensions can be quasi-exactly solved, i.e. solved for the ground and low energy states. In particular, we show rigorously that the ground state of the Hubbard model with off-site Coulomb repulsions on a decorated Kagomè lattice is an ordered array of local currents. The low energy theory describing this chiral state is an $S=1/2$ XY model, where each spin degree of freedom represents the two possible chiralities of each local current.

Charge and spin inhomogeneous phases in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice Model

We study numerically the one-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice. This model is widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. Due to the competition between double and super-exchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge-ordered state. This ordering is present even in the absence of any inter-site Coulomb repulsion. There is an insulating gap associated to the charge structure formation. We also study the insulator-metal transition induced by a magnetic field which removes simultaneously both charge and spin ordering.

Itinerant Ferromagnetism in the Periodic Anderson Model

We introduce a novel mechanism for itinerant ferromagnetism, based on a simple two-band model. The model includes an uncorrelated and dispersive band hybridized with a second band which is narrow and correlated. The simplest Hamiltonian containing these ingredients is the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM). Using quantum Monte Carlo and analytical methods, we show that the PAM and an extension of it contain the new mechanism and exhibit a non-saturated ferromagnetic ground state in the intermediate valence regime. We propose that the mechanism, which does not assume an intra atomic Hund's coupling, is present in both the iron group and in some f electron compounds like Ce(Rh_{1-x} Ru_x)_3 B_2, La_x Ce_{1-x} Rh_3 B_2 and the uranium monochalcogenides US, USe, and UTe.

Unveiling Order behind Complexity: Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Bose-Einstein Condensation

We present an algebraic framework for identifying the order parameter and the possible phases of quantum systems that is based on identifying the local dimension $N$ of the quantum operators and using the SU(N) group representing the generators of generalized spin-particle mappings. We illustrate this for $N$=3 by presenting for any spatial dimension the exact solution of the bilinear-biquadratic $S$=1 quantum Heisenberg model at a high symmetry point. Through this solution we rigorously show that itinerant ferromagnetism and Bose-Einstein condensation may coexist.
