Hierarchical Mean-Field Theories in Quantum Statistical Mechanics

We present a theoretical framework and a calculational scheme to study the coexistence and competition of thermodynamic phases in quantum statistical mechanics. The crux of the method is the realization that the microscopic Hamiltonian, modeling the system, can always be written in a hierarchical operator language that unveils all symmetry generators of the problem and, thus, possible thermodynamic phases. In general one cannot compute the thermodynamic or zero-temperature properties exactly and an approximate scheme named ``hierarchical mean-field approach'' is introduced. This approach treats all possible competing orders on an equal footing. We illustrate the methodology by determining the phase diagram and quantum critical point of a bosonic lattice model which displays coexistence and competition between antiferromagnetism and superfluidity.

Hidden unity in the quantum description of matter

We introduce an algebraic framework for interacting quantum systems that enables studying complex phenomena, characterized by the coexistence and competition of various broken symmetry states of matter. The approach unveils the hidden unity behind seemingly unrelated physical phenomena, thus establishing exact connections between them. This leads to the fundamental concept of {\it universality} of physical phenomena, a general concept not restricted to the domain of critical behavior. Key to our framework is the concept of {\it languages} and the construction of {\it dictionaries} relating them.

Segmented Band Mechanism for Itinerant Ferromagnetism

We introduce a novel mechanism for itinerant ferromagnetism, which is based on a simple two-band model, and using numerical and analytical methods, we show that the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) contains this mechanism. We propose that the mechanism, which does not assume an intra-atomic Hund's coupling, is present in both the iron group and some $f$ electron compounds.

Unified Description of the Resonance Peak and Incommensuration in High-$T_c$ Superconductors

We present a unified description of the resonance peak and low-energy incommensurate response observed in high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. We argue that both features have a purely magnetic origin and they represent universal features of an incommensurate spin state both below and above the superconducting transition temperature. In this description the resonance peak is the reflection of commensurate antiferromagnetism. Our theoretical scenario gives an account of the main features observed in various families of superconductors and predicts those not yet observed, like a resonance peak in La$_2$NiO$_{4+x}$.

Itinerant Ferromagnetism for Mixed Valence Systems

We introduce a novel mechanism for the unusual itinerant ferromagnetism found in mixed valence systems like Ce(Rh$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_3$B$_2$, La$_x$Ce$_{1-x}$Rh$_3$B$_2$, US, USe, and UTe. With it we can provide an explanation for the long-unexplained large value of $T_c$ ($\sim$ 100$^\circ$K) value and the maximum in the magnetization below $T_c$ found experimentally. We also show that this novel itinerent ferromagnetism can be continuously connected with the localized case for which the energy scale is much smaller ($J_{RKKY} \sim$ 1$^\circ$K).

Ferromagnetism in the Two-Dimensional Periodic Anderson Model

Using the constrained-path Monte Carlo method, we studied the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional periodic Anderson model for electron fillings between 1/4 and 1/2. We also derived two effective low energy theories to assist in interpreting the numerical results. For 1/4 filling we found that the system can be a Mott or a charge transfer insulator, depending on the relative values of the Coulomb interaction and the charge transfer gap between the two non-interacting bands. The insulator may be a paramagnet or antiferromagnet. We concentrated on the effect of electron doping on these insulating phases. Upon doping we obtained a partially saturated ferromagnetic phase for low concentrations of conduction electrons. If the system were a charge transfer insulator, we would find that the ferromagnetism is induced by the well-known RKKY interaction. However, we found a novel correlated hopping mechanism inducing the ferromagnetism in the region where the non-doped system is a Mott insulator. Our regions of ferromagnetism spanned a much smaller doping range than suggested by recent slave boson and dynamical mean field theory calculations, but they were consistent with that obtained by density matrix renormalization group calculations of the one-dimensional periodic Anderson model.

Generalized Jordan-Wigner Transformations

We introduce a new spin-fermion mapping, for arbitrary spin $S$ generating the SU(2) group algebra, that constitutes a natural generalization of the Jordan-Wigner transformation for $S=1/2$. The mapping, valid for regular lattices in any spatial dimension $d$, serves to unravel hidden symmetries in one representation that are manifest in the other. We illustrate the power of the transformation by finding exact solutions to lattice models previously unsolved by standard techniques. We also present a proof of the existence of the Haldane gap in $S=$1 bilinear nearest-neighbors Heisenberg spin chains and discuss the relevance of the mapping to models of strongly correlated electrons. Moreover, we present a general spin-anyon mapping for the case $d \leq 2$.

Ferromagnetic Polarons in Manganites

Using the Lanczos method in linear chains we study the double exchange model in the low concentration limit, including an antiferromagnetic super-exchange K. In the strong coupling limit we find that the ground state contains ferromagnetic polarons whose length is very sensitive to the value of K/t. We investigate the dispersion relation, the trapping by impurities, and the interaction between these polarons. As the overlap between polarons increases, by decreasing K/t, the effective interaction between them changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. The scaling to the thermodynamic limit suggests an attractive interaction in the strong coupling regime (J_h > t) and no binding in the weak limit (J_h \simeq t).

Quantum Phase Diagram of the t-Jz Chain Model

We present the quantum phase diagram of the one-dimensional $t$-$J_z$ model for arbitrary spin (integer or half-integer) and sign of the spin-spin interaction $J_z$, using an {\it exact} mapping to a spinless fermion model that can be solved {\it exactly} using the Bethe ansatz. We discuss its superconducting phase as a function of hole doping $ν$. Motivated by the new paradigm of high temperature superconductivity, the stripe phase, we also consider the effect the antiferromagnetic background has on the $t$-$J_z$ chain intended to mimic the stripe segments.

Evidence of quantum criticality in the doped Haldane system Y2BaNiO5

Experimental bulk susceptibility X(T) and magnetization M(H,T) of the S=1-Haldane chain system doped with nonmagnetic impurities, Y2BaNi1-xZnxO5 (x=0.04,0.06,0.08), are analyzed. A numerical calculation for the low-energy spectrum of non-interacting open segments describes very well experimental data above 4 K. Below 4 K, we observe power-law behaviors, X(T)=T^-alpha and M(H,T)/T^(1-alpha)=f(alpha,(H/T)), with alpha (<1) depending on the doping concentration x.This observation suggests the appearance of a gapless quantum phase due to a broad distribution of effective couplings between the dilution-induced moments.

A numerical method for detecting incommensurate correlations in the Heisenberg zigzag ladder

We study two Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains coupled by a frustrating ``zigzag'' interaction. We are particularly interested in the regime of weak interchain coupling, which is difficult to analyse by either numerical or analytical methods. Previous density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) studies of the isotropic model with open boundary conditions and sizeable interchain coupling have established the presence of incommensurate correlations and of a spectral gap. By using twisted boundary conditions with arbitrary twist angle, we are able to determine the incommensurabilities both in the isotropic case and in the presence of an exchange anisotropy by means of exact diagonalisation of relatively short finite chains of up to 24 sites. Using twisted boundary conditions results in a very smooth dependence of the incommensurabilities on system size, which makes the extrapolation to infinite systems significantly easier than for open or periodic chains.

New Type of Charge and Magnetic order in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice

We study numerically the one dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice, a model widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. By including a nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction (V) and a superexchange interaction between the localized moments (K), we obtain the phase diagram in parameter space for several dopings at T=0. Due to the competition between double and superexchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge ordered (CO) state which survives also for V=0. This mechanism should be taken into account in theories of charge ordering involving spin degrees of freedom.

Superconductivity and Topological Numbers in the Hubbard Chain with Bond-Charge Interaction

We determine the quantum phase diagram of the Hubbard chain with electron-hole symmetric correlated hopping at 1/2- and 1/4-filling using geometric concepts and continuum limit field theory. The long distance behavior of various correlation functions show a very rich phase diagram with several insulating, metallic, and superconducting phases, which might be relevant to (TMTSF)$_2$X compounds. The closing of charge and spin gaps are accurately resolved as topological transitions (jumps in $π$ of Berry phases). The metallic or insulating character of each thermodynamic phase is obtained from the ground-state expectation value of a displacement operator in reciprocal space.

Electron Spin Resonance of defects in the Haldane System Y(2)BaNiO(5)

We calculate the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of the antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain compound Y(2)BaNi(1-x)Mg(x)O(5) for different values of x and temperature T much lower than the Haldane gap (~100K). The low-energy spectrum of an anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian, with all parameters determined from experiment, has been solved using DMRG. The observed EPR spectra are quantitatively reproduced by this model. The presence of end-chain S=1/2 states is clearly observed as the main peak in the spectrum and the remaining structure is completely understood.

Phase Diagrams from Topological Transitions: The Hubbard Chain with Correlated Hopping

The quantum phase diagram of the Hubbard chain with correlated hopping is accurately determined through jumps in $π$ in the charge and spin Berry phases. The nature of each thermodynamic phase, and the existence of charge and spin gaps, is confirmed by calculating correlation functions and other fundamental quantities using numerical methods, and symmetry arguments. Remarkably we find striking similarities between the stable phases for moderate on-site Coulomb repulsion: spin Peierls, spin-density-wave and triplet superconductor, and those measured in (TMTSF)$_2$X.

Angle resolved Cu and O photoemission intensities in CuO_2 planes

Using a mapping from the three-band extended Hubbard model for cuprate superconductors into a generalized t-J model, and exact diagonalization of the latter in a 4x4 cluster, we determine the quasiparticle weight for destruction of a Cu or an O electrons with definite wave vector k. We also derive an approximate but accurate analytical expression which relates the O intensity with the quasiparticle weight in the generalized t-J model, and use it to obtain the O intensity from results of the self-consistent Born approximation. The k-dependence of Cu and O intensities is markedly different. In particular the O intensity vanishes for k=(0,0). Our results are relevant for the interpretation of angle-resolved photoemission experiments.

Spin dynamics of hole doped Y2BaNiO5

Starting from a multiband Hamiltonian containing the relevant Ni and O orbitals, we derive an effective Hamiltonian $H_{eff}$ for the low energy physics of doped Y$_{2}$BaNiO$_{5}.$ For hole doping, $H_{eff}$ describes O fermions interacting with S=1 Ni spins in a chain, and cannot be further reduced to a simple one-band model. Using numerical techniques, we obtain a dynamical spin structure factor with weight inside the Haldane gap. The nature of these low-energy excitations is identified and the emerging physical picture is consistent with most of the experimental information in Y% $_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$BaNiO$_{5}$

Magnetic Raman Scattering of Insulating Cuprates

We study the $B_{1g}$ and $A_{1g}$ Raman profiles of M$_{2}$Cu$O_{4}$ (with M= La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd), Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{0.5}$Y$_{0.5}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{8+y}$%, YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.2}$ and PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{2.7}$Al$_{0.3}$O$_{7}$ insulating cuprates within the Loudon-Fleury theory, in the framework of an extended Hubbard model for moderate on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. We calculate the non-resonant contribution to these Raman profiles by using exact diagonalization techniques and analyze two types of contributing mechanisms to the line shapes: 4-spin cyclic exchange and spin-phonon interactions. Although these interactions contribute to different parts of the spectra, together, they account for the enhanced linewidth and asymmetry of the $B_{1g}$ mode, as well as the non-negligible intensity of the $A_{1g}$ Raman line observed in these materials.
