A 3D view of the outflow in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC-1)

The fast outflow emerging from a region associated with massive star formation in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC-1), located behind the Orion Nebula, appears to have been set in motion by an explosive event. Here we study the structure and dynamics of outflows in OMC-1. We combine radial velocity and proper motion data for near-IR emission of molecular hydrogen to obtain the first 3-dimensional (3D) structure of the OMC-1 outflow. Our work illustrates a new diagnostic tool for studies of star formation that will be exploited in the near future with the advent of high spatial resolution spectro-imaging in particular with data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We use published radial and proper motion velocities obtained from the shock-excited vibrational emission in the H2 v=1-0 S(1) line at 2.122 $μ$m obtained with the GriF instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, the Apache Point Observatory, the Anglo-Australian Observatory and the Subaru Telescope. These data give the 3D velocity of ejecta yielding a 3D reconstruction of the outflows. This allows one to view the material from different vantage points in space giving considerable insight into the geometry. Our analysis indicates that the ejection occurred <720 years ago from a distorted ring-like structure of ~15" (6000 AU) in diameter centered on the proposed point of close encounter of the stars BN, source I and maybe also source n. We propose a simple model involving curvature of shock trajectories in magnetic fields through which the origin of the explosion and the centre defined by extrapolated proper motions of BN, I and n may be brought into spatial coincidence.

Solution to a non-Archimedean Monge-Ampère equation

Let X be a smooth projective Berkovich space over a complete discrete valuation field K of residue characteristic zero, and assume that X is defined over a function field admitting K as a completion. Let further m be a positive measure on X and L be an ample line bundle such that the mass of m is equal to the degree of L. Then we show the existence a continuous semipositive metric whose associated measure is equal to m in the sense of Zhang and Chambert-Loir. This we do under a technical assumption on the support of m, which is, for instance, fulfilled if the support is a finite set of divisorial points. Our method draws on analogues of the variational approach developed to solve complex Monge-Ampère equations on compact Kähler manifolds by Berman, Guedj, Zeriahi and the first named author, and of Kołodziej's continuity estimates. It relies in a crucial way on the compactness properties of singular semipositive metrics, as defined and studied in a companion article.

High-resolution EVLA image of dimethyl ether (CH$_{3}$)$_{2}$O in Orion--KL

We report the first sub-arc second (0.65$\arcsec$ $\times$ 0.51$\arcsec$) image of the dimethyl ether molecule, (CH$_{3}$)$_{2}$O, toward the Orion Kleinmann-Low nebula (Orion--KL). The observations were carried at 43.4 GHz with the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA). The distribution of the lower energy transition 6$_{1,5} - 6_{0,6}$, EE (E$\rm_{u}$ = 21 K) mapped in this study is in excellent agreement with the published dimethyl ether emission maps imaged with a lower resolution. The main emission peaks are observed toward the Compact Ridge and Hot Core southwest components, at the northern parts of the Compact Ridge and in an intermediate position between the Compact Ridge and the Hot Core. A notable result is that the distribution of dimethyl ether is very similar to that of another important larger O-bearing species, the methyl formate (HCOOCH$_{3}$), imaged at lower resolution. Our study shows that higher spectral resolution (WIDAR correlator) and increased spectral coverage provided by the EVLA offer new possibilities for imaging complex molecular species. The sensitivity improvement and the other EVLA improvements make this instrument well suited for high sensitivity, high angular resolution, molecular line imaging.

HCOOCH3 as a probe of temperature and structure of Orion-KL

We studied the O-bearing molecule HCOOCH3 to characterize the physical conditions of the different molecular source components in Orion-KL. We identify 28 methyl formate emission peaks throughout the 50" field of observations. The two strongest peaks are in the Compact Ridge (MF1) and in the SouthWest of the Hot Core (MF2). Spectral confusion is still prevailing as half of the expected transitions are blended over the region. Assuming that the transitions are thermalized, we derive the temperature at the five main emission peaks. At the MF1 position we find a temperature of 80K in a 1.8"x0.8" beam size and 120K on a larger scale (3.6" x2.2"), suggesting an external source of heating, whereas the temperature is about 130K at the MF2 position on both scales. Transitions of HCOOCH3 in vt=1 are detected as well and the good agreement of the positions on the rotational diagrams between the vt=0 and the vt=1 transitions suggests a similar temperature. The velocity of the gas is between 7.5 and 8.0km/s depending on the positions and column density peaks vary from 1.6x10^16 to 1.6x10^17cm^-2. A second velocity component is observed around 9-10 km/s in a North-South structure stretching from the Compact Ridge up to the BN object; this component is warmer at the MF1 peak. The two other C2H4O2 isomers are not detected and the derived upper limit for the column density is <3x10^14cm^-2 for glycolaldehyde and <2x10^15cm^-2 for acetic acid. From the 223GHz continuum map, we identify several dust clumps with associated gas masses in the range 0.8 to 5.8Msun. Assuming that the HCOOCH3 is spatially distributed as the dust, we find relative abundances of HCOOCH3 in the range <0.1x10^-8 to 5.2x10^-8. We suggest a relation between the methyl formate distribution and shocks as traced by 2.12 mum H2 emission.

Foliations invariant by rational maps

We give a classification of pairs (F, f) where F is a holomorphic foliation on a projective surface and f is a non-invertible dominant rational map preserving F. We prove that both the map and the foliation are integrable in a suitable sense.

Degree growth of meromorphic surface maps

We study the degree growth of iterates of meromorphic selfmaps of compact Kahler surfaces. Using cohomology classes on the Riemann-Zariski space we show that the degrees grow similarly to those of mappings that are algebraically stable on some birational model.
