The importance of the bulk viscosity of QCD in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the consequences of a nonzero bulk viscosity coefficient on the transverse momentum spectra, azimuthal momentum anisotropy, and multiplicity of charged hadrons produced in heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. The agreement between a realistic 3D hybrid simulation and the experimentally measured data considerably improves with the addition of a bulk viscosity coefficient for strongly interacting matter. This paves the way for an eventual quantitative determination of several QCD transport coefficients from the experimental heavy ion and hadron-nucleus collision programs.

Thermal photon radiation in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

The collective behaviour of hadronic particles has been observed in high multiplicity proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), as well as in deuteron-gold collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). In this work we present the first calculation, in the hydrodynamic framework, of thermal photon radiation from such small collision systems. Owing to their compact size, these systems can reach temperatures comparable to those in central nucleus-nucleus collisions. The thermal photons can thus shine over the prompt background, and increase the low $p_T$ direct photon spectrum by a factor of 2-3 in 0-1% p+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV. This thermal photon enhancement can therefore serve as a clean signature of the existence of a hot quark-gluon plasma during the evolution of these small collision systems, as well as validate hydrodynamic behavior in small systems.

Production and Elliptic Flow of Dileptons and Photons in the semi-Quark Gluon Plasma

We consider the thermal production of dileptons and photons at temperatures above the critical temperature in QCD. We use a model where color excitations are suppressed by a small value of the Polyakov loop, the semi Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Comparing the semi-QGP to the perturbative QGP, we find a mild enhancement of thermal dileptons. In contrast, to leading logarithmic order in weak coupling there are far fewer hard photons from the semi-QGP than the usual QGP. To illustrate the possible effects on photon and dileptons production in heavy ion collisions, we integrate the rate with a realistic hydrodynamic simulation. Dileptons uniformly exhibit a small flow, but the strong suppression of photons in the semi-QGP tends to bias the elliptical flow of photons to that generated in the hadronic phase.

Extracting the bulk viscosity of the quark-gluon plasma

We investigate the implications of a nonzero bulk viscosity coefficient on the azimuthal momentum anisotropy of ultracentral relativistic heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We find that, with IP-Glasma initial conditions, a finite bulk viscosity coefficient leads to a better description of the flow harmonics in ultracentral collisions. We then extract optimal values of bulk and shear viscosity coefficients that provide the best agreement with flow harmonic coefficients data in this centrality class.

Thermally Fluctuating Second-Order Viscous Hydrodynamics and Heavy-Ion Collisions

The fluctuation-dissipation theorem requires the presence of thermal noise in viscous fluids. The time and length scales of heavy ion collisions are small enough so that the thermal noise can have a measurable effect on observables. Thermal noise is included in numerical simulations of high energy lead-lead collisions, increasing average values of the momentum eccentricity and contributing to its event by event fluctuations.

Effect of initial-state nucleon-nucleon correlations on collective flow in ultra-central heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the effect of nucleon-nucleon correlations on the initial condition of ultra-central heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. We calculate the eccentricities of the MC-Glauber and IP-Glasma models in the 0--1% centrality class and show that they are considerably affected by the inclusion of such type of correlations. For an IP-Glasma initial condition, we further demonstrate that this effect survives the fluid-dynamical evolution of the system and can be observed in its final state azimuthal momentum anisotropy.

Transport Coefficients of Bulk Viscous Pressure in the 14-moment approximation

We compute the transport coefficients that appear in the fluid-dynamical equations for the bulk viscous pressure and shear-stress tensor using the 14-moment approximation in the limit of small, but finite, masses. In this limit, we are able to express all these coefficients in terms of known thermodynamic quantities, such as the thermodynamic pressure, energy density, and the velocity of sound. We explicitly demonstrate that the ratio of bulk viscosity to bulk relaxation time behaves very differently, as a function of temperature, than the ratio of shear viscosity to shear relaxation time. We further explicitly compute, for the first time, the transport coefficients that couple the bulk viscous pressure to the shear-stress tensor and vice versa. The coefficient that couples bulk viscous pressure to shear-stress tensor is found to be orders of magnitude larger than the bulk viscosity itself, suggesting that bulk viscous pressure production owes more to this coupling than to the expansion rate of the system.

Open Charm Production in $p + p$ and Pb + Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Effects of strong longitudinal colour electric fields (SCF), shadowing, and quenching on the open prompt charm mesons (D$^0$, D$^+$, D$^{*+}$, D${_s}{^+}$) production in central Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV are investigated within the framework of the {\small HIJING/BB v2.0} model. We compute the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm PbPb}^{\rm D}$, and show that the above nuclear effects constitute important dynamical mechanisms in the description of experimental data. The strength of colour fields (as characterized by the string tension $κ$), partonic energy loss and jet quenching process lead to a suppression factor consistent with recent published data. Predictions for future beauty mesons measurements have been included. Ratios of strange to non-strange prompt charm mesons in central Pb + Pb and minimum bias (MB) $ p + p$ collisions at 2.76 TeV are also discussed. Minimum bias $p + p$ collisions which constitute theoretical baseline in our calculations are studied at the centre of mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV.

Hyperon/meson ratios in rare high-multiplicity $pp$ collisions at energies available at the Large Hadron Collider, and potential signatures for mini-quark-gluon plasma formation

We use the framework of the HIJING/BB v2.0 model to simulate high-multiplicity (HM) $p+p$ collision events at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to study observables sensitive to possible collective phenomena, such as strong longitudinal color fields (SLCF) modeled by an enhanced string tension ($κ$). We focus on the hyperon/meson yield ratios at center-of-mass (c.m.) energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV, in the transverse momentum region, $1 < p_T < 4 $ GeV/{\it c}. For minimum bias events these ratios are well described assuming an energy dependence $κ= κ(s)= κ_{0} (s/s_{0})^{0.04} {\rm GeV/fm}$ ($κ_{0}$= 1 GeV/fm), giving a value $κ= 2$ GeV/fm at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. We compare minimum bias (MB) events to simulated HM events assuming that $κ(MB)=2$ GeV/fm could grow to an extreme value of $κ(HM)=5$ GeV/fm that saturates the strangeness suppression factor. With this assumption the model predicts a very strong enhancement of (multi)strange baryon/meson ratios in HM events. If observed, such an enhancement could be also interpreted as a possible signature for formation in HM $p+p$ collision events of a deconfined but out of local thermal equilibrium {\em mini quark-gluon plasma} (mQGP).

Baryon anomaly and strong color fields in Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76A TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

With the HIJING/BBbar v2.0 heavy ion event generator, we explore the phenomenological consequences of several high parton density dynamical effects predicted in central Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. These include (1) jet quenching due to parton energy loss (dE/dx), (2) strangeness and hyperon enhancement due to strong longitudinal color field (SCF), and (3) enhancement of baryon-to-meson ratios due to baryon-anti-baryon junctions (JJbar) loops and SCF effects. The saturation/minijet cutoff scale p0(s)and effective string tension kappa(s,A) are constrained by our previous analysis of LHC p+p data and recent data on the charged multiplicity for Pb+Pb collisions reported by the ALICE collaboration. We predict the hadron flavor dependence (mesons and baryons) of the nuclear modification factor RAA(pT)$ and emphasize the possibility that the baryon anomaly could persist at the LHC up to pT=10 GeV, well beyond the range observed in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies.

Thermal Photons and Collective Flow at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider

We update our calculations of thermal-photon production in nuclear collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). Specifically, we address the recent experimental observation of an elliptic flow of direct photons comparable in magnitude to that of pions, which is at variance with expectations based on quark-gluon plasma (QGP) dominated photon radiation. Our thermal emission rate is based on previous work, i.e., resummed leading-order QGP emission and in-medium hadronic rates in the confined phase. These rates are nearly degenerate at temperatures close to the expected QCD-phase change. The rates are convoluted over an improved elliptic-fireball expansion with transverse- and elliptic-flow fields quantitatively constrained by empirical light- and strange-hadron spectra. The resulting direct-photon spectra in central Au-Au collisions are characterized by hadron-dominated emission up to transverse momenta of ~2-3 GeV. The associated large elliptic flow in the hadronic phase mitigates the discrepancy with the measured photon-v2 compared to scenarios with QGP-dominated emission.

Strong longitudinal color field effects in pp collisions at energies available at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the effect of strong longitudinal color fields (SCF) in p+p reactions up to Large Hadron Collider energies in the framework of the HIJING/BBbar v2.0 model that combines (collinear factorized) pQCD multiple minijet production with soft longitudinal string excitation and hadronization. The default vacuum string tension, kappa0 = 1 GeV/fm, is replaced by an effective power law energy dependent string tension, that increases monotonically with center-of-mass energy. The exponent 0.06 is found sufficient to reproduce well the energy dependence of multiparticle observables in RHIC, Tevatron, as well as recent LHC data. This exponent is found to be only half of that predicted by the Color Glass Saturation model, lambda(CGC)=0.115, where gluon fusion multiparticle production mechanisms are assumed. In HIJING/BBbar v2.0, the rapid growth of central-rapidity density with energy is due to the interplay of copious minijet production and increasing SCF contributions. The large (strange)baryon-to-meson ratios measured at Tevatron energies are well described. A significant enhancement of these ratios is predicted up to the highest LHC energy (14 TeV). The effect of JJbar loops and SCF on baryon-anti-baryon asymmetry and its relation to baryon number transport is also discussed.

Jet energy loss and high $p_T$ photon production in hot quark-gluon plasma

Jet-quenching and photon production at high transverse momentum are studied at RHIC energies, together with the correlation between jets and photons. The energy loss of hard partons traversing the hot QGP is evaluated in the AMY formalism, consistently taking into account both induced gluon emission and elastic collisions. The production of high $p_T$ photons in Au+Au collisions is calculated, incorporating a complete set of photon-production channels. Putting all these ingredients together with a (3+1)-dimensional ideal relativistic hydrodynamical description of the thermal medium, we achieve a good description of the current experimental data. Our results illustrate that the interaction between hard jets and the soft medium is important for a complete understanding of jet quenching, photon production, and photon-hadron correlations in relativistic nuclear collisions.

The phi meson at high temperatures and densities

The spectral density of the phi meson in a hot bath of nucleons and pions is calculated by relating the vector meson self-energy to the forward scattering amplitude, which is constrained by experimental data. Dispersion techniques are used to verify the relationship between real and the imaginary parts of the in-medium self energy. The position of the spectral peak of the phi meson is found to be shifted from its vacuum position by only a small amount, but its width is considerably increased.

Radiative and Collisional Energy Loss, and Photon-Tagged Jets at RHIC

The suppression of single jets at high transverse momenta in a quark-gluon plasma is studied at RHIC energies, and the additional information provided by a photon tag is included. The energy loss of hard jets traversing through the medium is evaluated in the AMY formalism, by consistently taking into account the contributions from radiative events and from elastic collisions at leading order in the coupling. The strongly-interacting medium in these collisions is modelled with (3+1)-dimensional ideal relativistic hydrodynamics. Putting these ingredients together with a complete set of photon-production processes, we present a calculation of the nuclear modification of single jets and photon-tagged jets at RHIC.

J/psi dissociation by light mesons in an extended Nambu Jona-Lasinio model

An alternative model for the dissociation of the J/psi is proposed. Chiral symmetry is properly implemented. Abnormal parity interactions and mesonic form factors naturally arise from the underlying quark sub-structure. Analytic confinement for the light quarks is generated by appropriately chosen the quark interaction kernels. Dissociation cross sections of the J/psi by either a pion or a rho meson are then evaluated and discussed.

Properties of the phi meson at high temperatures and densities

We calculate the spectral density of the phi meson in a hot bath of nucleons and pions using a general formalism relating self-energy to the forward scattering amplitude (FSA). In order to describe the low energy FSA, we use experimental data along with a background term. For the high energy FSA, a Regge parameterization is employed. We verify the resulting FSA using dispersion techniques. We find that the position of the peak of the spectral density is slightly shifted from its vacuum position and that its width is considerably increased. The width of the spectral density at a temperature of 150 MeV and at normal nuclear density is more than 90 MeV.
