Electrical resistivity ofYb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 single crystals at low temperatures

We report low-temperature measurements of the electrical resistivity of Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 single crystals with 0 <= x <= 0.12. The isoelectronic substitution of Co on the Rh site leads to a decrease of the unit cell volume which stabilizes the antiferromagnetism. Consequently, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature increases upon Co substitution. For x = 0.07 Co content a subsequent low-temperature transition is observed in agreement with susceptibility measurements and results on YbRh2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure. Above the Neel transition the resistivity follows a non-Fermi liquid behavior similar to that of YbRh2Si2.

Magnetization study on the field-induced quantum critical point in YbRh_2Si_2

We study the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ by low-temperature magnetization, $M(T)$, and magnetic Grüneisen ratio, $Γ_{\rm mag}$, measurements and compare the results with previous thermal expansion, $β(T)$, and critical Grüneisen ratio, $Γ^{cr}(T)$, data on YbRh$_2$(Si$_{0.95}$Ge$_{0.05}$)$_2$. In the latter case, a slightly negative chemical pressure has been used to tune the system towards its zero-field QCP. The magnetization derivative $-dM/dT$ is far more singular than thermal expansion, reflecting a strongly temperature dependent pressure derivative of the field at constant entropy, $(dH/dP)_S=V_mβ/(dM/dT)$ ($V_m$: molar volume), which saturates at $(0.15\pm 0.04)$ T/GPa for $T\to 0$. The line $T^\star(H)$, previously observed in Hall- and thermodynamic measurements, separates regimes in $T$-$H$ phase space of stronger $(ε>1$) and weaker $(ε<1$) divergent $Γ_{\rm mag}(T)\propto T^{-ε}$.

Kondo-Cluster-Glass State near a Ferromagnetic Quantum Phase Transition

We report on a comprehensive study of CePd$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ $(0.6 \leq x \leq 0.95)$ poly- and single crystals close to the ferromagnetic instability by means of low-temperature ac susceptibility, magnetization and volume thermal expansion. The signature of ferromagnetism in this heavy-fermion system can be traced from 6.6 K in CePd down to 25 mK for $x=0.87$. Despite pronounced non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) effects in both, specific heat and thermal expansion, the Grüneisen ratio {\it does not} diverge as $T\to 0$, providing evidence for the absence of a quantum critical point. Instead, a peculiar "Kondo-cluster-glass" state is found for $x\geq 0.65$, and the NFL effects in the specific heat, ac susceptibility and magnetization are compatible with the quantum Griffiths phase scenario.

Heavy fermion behavior in PrRh2B2C: Excitonic mass enhancement

We report magnetic and transport properties of a new quaternary borocarbide PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C, based on magnetisation, resistivity and specific heat studies. This compound forms in LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C-type tetragonal structure (space group {\it I4/mmm}) and does not exhibit magnetic ordering or superconductivity down to 0.5 K. The crystal field analysis of specific heat data suggests a singlet ground state in this compound. The high value of the Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ$ $\approx$ 250 mJ/mole K$^{2}$, together with a singlet ground state suggests that the heavy fermion behaviour in PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C results from the interaction of the conduction electrons with the low lying crystal field excitations. No signature of magnetic ordering or superconductivity is observed in PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C under the application of pressure up to 23 kbar.

Fluctuations and correlations in a frustrated S=1/2 square lattice with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions: a muSR study

Zero and longitudinal field $μ$SR measurements in Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ and BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$, two prototypes of the frustrated $S=1/2$ square lattice model with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, are presented. Both systems are observed to undergo a phase transition to a long-range magnetic order at $T_N\simeq 3.46$ K, for Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$, and at $T_N\simeq 0.99$ K, for BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. In Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ both the temperature dependence of the order parameter and the longitudinal relaxation rate above $T_N$ are consistent with a two-dimensional XY model. On the other hand, for BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$, which lies very close to the magnetically disordered region of the phase diagram where a bond-nematic order was predicted, a peculiar logarithmic increase of the relaxation is observed above $T_N$. In both systems a rather broad distribution of internal fields at the muon sites is noticed below $T_N$. The origin of this distribution is discussed in the light of the $μ$SR experiments already performed on $S=1/2$ frustrated antiferromagnets on a square lattice.

Violation of critical universality at the antiferromagnetic phase transition of YbRh2Si2

We report on precise low-temperature specific-heat measurements, C(T), of YbRh2Si2 in the vicinity of the antiferromagnetic phase transition on a single crystal of superior quality (RRR 150). We observe a very sharp peak at T_N=72mK with absolute values as high as C/T=8J/molK^2. A detailed analysis of the critical exponent αaround T_N reveals α=0.38 which differs significantly from those of the conventional universality classes in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, where α<0.11. Thermal-expansion measurements corroborate this large positive critical exponent. These results provide insight into the nature of the critical magnetic fluctuations at a temperature-driven phase transition close to a quantum critical point.

Interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in K-doped EuFe2As2

Superconductivity is found in 50% K-doped EuFe2As2 sample below 33 K. Our results of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and 57Fe and 151Eu Mossbauer spectroscopy provide clear evidence that the ordering of the Fe moments observed at 190 K in undoped EuFe2As2 is completely suppressed in our 50% K doped sample, thus there is no coexistence between the Fe magnetic order and the superconducting state. However, short range ordering of the Eu moments is coexisting with the superconducting state below 15 K. A bump in the susceptibility well below Tc as well as a slight broadening of the Fe Mossbauer line below 15 K evidence an interplay between the Eu magnetism and the superconducting state.

Interplay between 3d and 4f magnetism in CeCoPO

The ground state properties of CeCoPO, a homologue of the new high temperature superconductors RFePnO1-xFx, were studied by means of susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity measurements on polycrystals. The observation of a well defined Curie-Weiss behavior above 230K with mu_eff=2.9mu_B and a ferromagnetic ordering below T_C=75K is similar to what was observed in LaCoPO and points to magnetism of the Co-3d electrons. However, the Ce-ions are on the border to magnetism with a Kondo scale of T_K~40K and show an enhanced Sommerfeld-coefficient of γ~200mJ/molK^2.

Divergence of the Magnetic Grüneisen Ratio at the Field-Induced Quantum Critical Point in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$

The heavy fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is studied by low-temperature magnetization $M(T)$ and specific-heat $C(T)$ measurements at magnetic fields close to the quantum critical point ($H_c=0.06$ T, $H\perp c$). Upon approaching the instability, $dM/dT$ is more singular than $C(T)$, leading to a divergence of the magnetic Grüneisen ratio $Γ_{\rm mag}=-(dM/dT)/C$. Within the Fermi liquid regime, $Γ_{\rm mag}=-G_r(H-H_c^{fit})$ with $G_r=-0.30\pm 0.01$ and $H_c^{fit}=(0.065\pm 0.005)$ T which is consistent with scaling behavior of the specific-heat coefficient in YbRh$_2$(Si$_{0.95}$Ge$_{0.05}$)$_2$. The field-dependence of $dM/dT$ indicates an inflection point of the entropy as a function of magnetic field upon passing the line $T^\star(H)$ previously observed in Hall- and thermodynamic measurements.

Evolution of the Kondo state of YbRh2Si2 probed by high field ESR

An electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the heavy fermion compound YbRh2Si2 for fields up to ~ 8 T reveals a strongly anisotropic signal below the single ion Kondo temperature T_K ~ 25 K. A remarkable similarity between the T-dependence of the ESR parameters and that of the specific heat and the 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance data gives evidence that the ESR response is given by heavy fermions which are formed below T_K and that ESR properties are determined by their field dependent mass and lifetime. The signal anisotropy, otherwise typical for Yb{3+} ions, suggests that, owing to a strong hybridization with conduction electrons at T < T_K, the magnetic anisotropy of the 4f states is absorbed in the ESR of heavy quasiparticles. Tuning the Kondo effect on the 4f states with magnetic fields ~ 2 - 8 T and temperature 2 - 25 K yields a gradual change of the ESR g-factor and linewidth which reflects the evolution of the Kondo state in this Kondo lattice system.

Magnetic susceptibility of YbRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2 on the basis of a localized 4f electron approach

We consider the local properties of the Yb3+ ion in the crystal electric field in the Kondo lattice compounds YbRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2. On this basis we have calculated the magnetic susceptibility taking into account the Kondo interaction in the simplest molecular field approximation. The resulting Curie-Weiss law and Van Vleck susceptibilities could be excellently fitted to experimental results in a wide temperature interval where thermodynamic and transport properties show non-Fermi-liquid behaviour for these materials.

Effect of pressure and Ir substitution in YbRh2Si2

In this article we present a study of the electrical resistivity of Yb(Rh-xIrx)2Si2, x=0.06, under high pressure and in magnetic field. Ir substitution is expanding the unit cell and leads to a suppression of the antiferromagnetic transition temperature to zero, where eventually a quantum critical point (QCP) exists. We applied hydrostatic pressure to reverse the effect of substitution. Our results indicate that Yb(Rh0.94Ir0.06)2Si2 is situated in the immediate proximity to a volume controlled QCP, but still on the magnetically ordered side of the phase diagram. The temperature - pressure phase diagram of Yb(Rh0.94Ir0.06)2Si2 resembles that of the pure compound. Substitution acts mainly as chemical pressure. Disorder introduced by substitution has only minor effects.

Effect of pressure on the magnetostructural transition in SrFe2As2

We present a systematic pressure study of poly- and single crystalline SrFe2As2 by electrical resistivity and X-ray diffraction measurements. SrFe2As2 exhibits a structural phase transition from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic phase at T0=205 K. The structural phase transition is intimately linked to a spin-density-wave transition taking place at the same temperature. Our pressure experiments show that T0 shifts to lower temperatures with increasing pressure. We can estimate a critical pressure of 4 to 5 GPa for the suppression of T0 to zero temperature. At pressures above 2.5 GPa the resistivity decreases significantly below Tx=40 K hinting at the emergence of superconductivity but no zero-resistance state is observed up to 3 GPa.

Magnetic behaviour of PrPd2B2C

We have synthesized a new quaternary borocarbide PrPd$_{2}$B$_{2}$C and measured its magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat. The compound crystallizes in the LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C-type tetragonal structure (space group {\it I4/mmm}). Above 100 K the magnetic susceptibility follows Curie-Weiss behavior with effective moment $μ_{eff}$ = 3.60 $μ_{B}$, which is very close to the value expected for Pr$^{3+}$ ions. We do not find evidence for magnetic or superconducting transition down to 0.5 K. Specific heat exhibits a broad Schottky type anomaly with a peak at 24 K, very likely related to crystal electric field (CEF) excitation. The magnetic properties suggest the presence of a singlet CEF ground state leading to a Van-Vleck paramagnetic ground state.

CeFePO: A Heavy Fermion Metal with Ferromagnetic Correlations

The ground state properties of CeFePO, a homologue of the new high temperature superconductors RFePnO(1-x)Fx, were studied by means of susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, and NMR measurements on polycrystals. All the results demonstrate that this compound is a magnetically non-ordered heavy Fermion metal with a Kondo temperature TK~10K, a Sommerfeld coefficient gamma=700mJ/molK2 and a mass enhancement factor of the order of 200. The absence of a Fe-contribution to the effective moment at high temperatures indicates that the magnetism in CeFePO is completely dominated by the effect of Ce. Thus the strong electronic correlation effects originate from the Ce-4f electrons rather than from the Fe-3d electrons. An enhanced Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio R=5.5 as well as a Korringa product S0/T1TK2~0.065 well below 1 indicate the presence of ferromagnetic correlations. Therefore, CeFePO appears to be on the non-magnetic side of a ferromagnetic instability.

Magnetic properties of BaCdVO(PO_4)_2: a strongly frustrated spin-1/2 square lattice close to the quantum critical regime

We report magnetization and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline samples of BaCdVO(PO_4)_2 and show that this compound is a S=1/2 frustrated square lattice with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (J_1) and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor (J_2) interactions. The coupling constants J_1\simeq -3.6 K and J_2\simeq 3.2 K are determined from a fitting of the susceptibility data and confirmed by an analysis of the saturation field (H_s=4.2 T), the specific heat, and the magnetic entropy. BaCdVO(PO_4)_2 undergoes magnetic ordering at about 1 K, likely towards a columnar antiferromagnetic state. We find that BaCdVO(PO_4)_2 with the frustration ratio α=J_2/J_1\simeq -0.9 is closer to a critical (quantum spin liquid) region of the frustrated square lattice than any of the previously reported compounds. Positive curvature of the magnetization curve is observed in agreement with recent theoretical predictions for high-field properties of the frustrated square lattice close to the critical regime.

Magnetic order in Pr2Pd3Ge5 and possible heavy fermion behavior in Pr2Rh3Ge5

We report our results on two new ternary intermetallic compounds Pr$_{2}$Pd$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ and Pr$_{2}$Rh$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ based on magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, resistivity and magnetoresistance data. These compounds form in U$_{2}$Co$_{3}$Si$_{5}$-type orthorhombic structure (space group \textit{Ibam}). Pr$_{2}$Pd$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ exhibits two magnetic transitions at T$_{N1}$ = 7.5 K and T$_{N2}$ = 8.3 K. In the magnetically ordered state Pr$_{2}$Pd$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ exhibits a field induced metamagnetic transition and unusually large magnetoresistance. Pr$_{2}$Rh$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$ does not show any phase transition down to 0.5 K. It has a CEF singlet ground state, separated from the first excited state by about 10 K. The low lying crystal field excitations lead to exciton mediated electronic mass enhancement as evidenced by large Sommerfeld coefficient ($γ$ $\sim$ 80 mJ/mol K$^2$) in Pr$_{2}$Rh$_{3}$Ge$_{5}$.

Possible re-entrant superconductivity in EuFe2As2 under pressure

We studied the temperature-pressure phase diagram of EuFe2As2 by measurements of the electrical resistivity. The antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave transition at T_0 associated with the FeAs-layers is continuously suppressed with increasing pressure, while the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of the Eu 2+ moments seems to be nearly pressure independent up to 2.6 GPa. Above 2 GPa a sharp drop of the resistivity, ρ(T), indicates the onset of superconductivity at T_c \approx 29.5 K. Surprisingly, on further reducing the temperature ρ(T) is increasing again and exhibiting a maximum caused by the ordering of the Eu 2+ moments, a behavior which is reminiscent of re-entrant superconductivity as it is observed in the ternary Chevrel phases or in the rare-earth nickel borocarbides.
