On coupled-channel dynamics in the presence of anomalous thresholds

We explore a general framework how to treat coupled-channel systems in the presence of overlapping left and right-hand cuts as well as anomalous thresholds. Such systems are studied in terms of a generalized potential, where we exploit the known analytic structure of t- and u-channel forces as the exchange masses get smaller approaching their physical values. Given an approximate generalized potential the coupled-channel reaction amplitudes are defined in terms of non-linear systems of integral equations. For large exchange masses, where there are no anomalous thresholds present, conventional $N/D$ methods are applicable to derive numerical solutions to the latter. At a formal level a generalization to the anomalous case is readily formulated by use of suitable contour integrations with amplitudes to be evaluated at complex energies. However, it is a considerable challenge to find numerical solutions to anomalous systems set up on a set of complex contours. By a suitable deformations of left-hand and right-hand cut lines we managed to establish a framework of linear integral equations defined for real energies. Explicit expressions are derived for the driving terms that hold for an arbitrary number of channels. Our approach is illustrated in terms of a schematic 3-channel systems. It is demonstrated that despite the presence of anomalous thresholds the scattering amplitude can be represented in terms of 3 phase shifts and 3 in-elasticity parameters, as one would expect from the coupled-channel unitarity condition.

Coupled-channel dynamics with chiral long-range forces in the open-charm sector of QCD

We perform an analysis of Lattice QCD data in the open-charm sector based on the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. The low-energy constants are adjusted to recover the open-charm meson masses on Lattice QCD ensembles from HPQCD, ETMC and HSC with pion and kaon masses smaller than 550 MeV. A significant set of low-energy parameters is obtainable only if the most recent information from HSC on scattering observables is included in our global fit. For the first time our analysis considers the effect of left-hand cuts as developed in terms of a generalized potential approach (GPA) previously by one of the authors. Here we use coupled-channel interaction terms at the one-loop level. The elastic s-wave and p-wave $D\,π$, $D K $ and $D \bar K $ scattering phase shifts on ensembles with nominal pion masses of about 239 MeV and 391 MeV are reproduced faithfully. Based on such low-energy parameters we predict s- and p-wave phase shifts and inelasticities at physical quark masses, where the statistical uncertainties in the phase shifts are smaller than 1 degree always. Most striking would be the exotic s-wave $D_s π$ channel, for which we predict a resonance state at about 2.287 GeV where the phase shift passes through 90 degrees.

Interplay of diffraction and nonlinear effects in propagation of ultrashort pulses

We investigate the interplay of diffraction and nonlinear effects during propagation of very short light pulses. Adapting the factorization approach to the problem at hand by keeping the transverse-derivative terms apart from the residual nonlinear contributions we derive an unidirectional propagation equation valid for weak dispersion and reducing to the slowly-evolving-wave-approximation for the case of paraxial rays. Comparison of numerical simulation results for the two equations shows pronounced differences when self-focusing plays important role. We devote special attention to modelling propagation of ultrashort terahertz pulses taking into account diffraction as well as Kerr type and second order nonlinearities. Comparing measured and simulated wave forms we deduce the value of the nonlinear refractive index of lithium niobate in the terahertz region to be three orders of magnitude larger than in the visible.

Spectral representation for u- and t-channel exchange processes in a partial-wave decomposition

We study the analytic structure of partial-wave amplitudes derived from u- and t-channel exchange processes. The latter plays a crucial role in dispersion-theory approaches to coupled-channel systems that model final state interactions in QCD. A general spectral representation is established that is valid in the presence of anomalous thresholds, decaying particles or overlapping left-hand and right-hand cut structures as it occurs frequently in hadron physics. The results are exemplified at hand of ten specific processes.

Nuclear Drell-Yan effect in a covariant model

We investigate effects of nuclear medium on antiquark distribution in nuclei applying the results of a recently developed relativistically-covariant self-consistent model for the pion and the isobar. We take into account Fermi motion including Pauli blocking and binding effects on the nucleons and medium effects on the isobar and pion leading to modest enhancement of the pion light-cone-momentum distribution in large nuclei. As a consequence the Drell-Yan cross-section ratio with respect to the deuteron exceeds one only for small values of the light-cone momentum.

Effects of consistent and inconsistent isobar coupling in the nuclear medium

We investigate effects of consistent (conserving the number of degrees of freedom) and inconsistent pion-nucleon-isobar couplings on the isobar propagator in vacuum and in nuclear medium. Using the consistent coupling in conjunction with a convenient basis leads to significant simplification of the isobar vacuum and in-medium self energy and dressed propagator compared to the case of inconsistent interaction. The higher-derivative nature of the consistent interaction requires a suitable compensation by an additional form-factor term or adjustment in the used cut-off values. This modification is straightforward to perform and assures that the physical observables connected to the spin-3/2 sector in vacuum and nuclear medium acquire values indistinguishable from the ones obtained by using an inconsistent coupling.

Covariant and self consistent vertex corrections for pions and isobars in nuclear matter

We evaluate the pion and isobar propagators in cold nuclear matter self consistently applying a covariant form of the isobar-hole model. Migdal's vertex correction effects are considered systematically in the absence of phenomenological soft form factors. Saturated nuclear matter is modeled by scalar and vector mean fields for the nucleon. It is shown that the short-range dressing of the pi N Delta vertex has a significant effect on the pion and isobar properties. Using realistic parameters sets we predict a downward shift of about 50 MeV for the Delta resonance at nuclear saturation density. The pionic soft modes are much less pronounced than in previous studies.

Photoabsorption off nuclei with self consistent vertex corrections

We study photoproduction off nuclei based on a self consistent and covariant many body approach for the pion and isobar propagation in infinite nuclear matter. For the first time the t-channel exchange of an in-medium pion is evaluated in the presence of vertex correction effects consistently. In particular the interference pattern with the s-channel in-medium nucleon and isobar exchange contribution is considered. Electromagnetic gauge invariance is kept as a consequence of various Ward identities obeyed by the computation. Adjusting the set of Migdal parameters to the data set we predict an attractive mass shift for the isobar of about 50 MeV at nuclear saturation density.

Antikaons and hyperons in nuclear matter with saturation

We evaluate the antikaon and hyperon spectral functions in a self-consistent and covariant many-body approach. The computation is based on coupled-channel dynamics derived from the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. A novel subtraction scheme is developed that avoids kinematical singularities and medium-induced power divergencies all together. Scalar and vector mean fields are used to model nuclear binding and saturation. The effect of the latter is striking for the antikaon spectral function that becomes significantly more narrow at small momenta. Attractive mass shifts of about 30 and 40 MeV are predicted for the Lambda(1405) and Sigma(1385) resonances. Once scalar and vector mean fields for the nucleon are switched on the Lambda(1520) resonances dissolves almost completely in nuclear matter. All together only moderate attraction is predicted for the nuclear antikaon systems at saturation density. However, at larger densities we predict a sizable population of soft antikaon modes that arise from the coupling of the antikaon to a highly collective Lambda(1115) nucleon-hole state. This may lead to the formation of exotic nuclear systems with strangeness and antikaon condensation in compact stars at moderate densities.

Self consistency in hadron physics

In this talk we discuss at hand of two examples the crucial role played by self consistency in hadron physics. The first example concerns the quark-mass dependence of the baryon octet and decuplet masses. It is shown that within a self consistent one-loop approach based on the chiral Lagrangian the 'mysterious' quark-mass dependence of the $Ξ$ mass predicted by the MILC collaboration may be recovered in terms of a discontinuous chiral extrapolation. This is a consequence of self consistency imposed on the partial summation, i.e. the masses used in the loop functions are identical to those obtained from the baryon self energies. In the second example we discuss recent studies on the properties of D mesons in cold nuclear matter as they are predicted by coupled-channel dynamics. Here a self consistent many-body approach reveals the close interlink of the properties of D meson and open-charm baryon resonances in nuclear matter. The relevance of exotic baryon resonances for the spectral distortion of the $D_s^\pm$ in nuclear matter is pointed out.

Open-charm systems in cold nuclear matter

We study the spectral distributions of charmed meson with $J^P=0^-$ quantum numbers in cold nuclear matter applying a self-consistent and covariant many-body approach established previously for the nuclear dynamics of kaons. At leading orders the computation requires as input the free-space two-body scattering amplitudes only. Our results are based on the s-wave meson-nucleon amplitudes obtained recently in terms of a coupled-channel approach. The amplitudes are characterized by the presence of many resonances in part so far not observed. This gives rise to an intriguing dynamics of charmed mesons in nuclear matter. At nuclear saturation density we predict a pronounced two-mode structure of the $D^+$ mesons with a main branch pushed up by about 32 MeV. The lower branch reflects the coupling to two resonance-hole states that are almost degenerate. For the $D^-$ we obtain a single mode pushed up by about 18 MeV relative to the vacuum mode. Most spectacular are the results for the $D^+_s$ meson. The presence of an exotic resonance-hole state gives rise to a rather broad and strongly momentum dependent spectral distribution.

Kaon and antikaon properties in cold nuclear medium

We present results of a self-consistent calculation for the kaon and antikaon spectral functions in cold nuclear matter, using as input the kaon-nucleon and antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes of the vacuum. We investigate the effect of in-medium pion dressing on the antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes and antikaon spectral function. We find the influence of pion dressing to be minor on the antikaon spectral function and limited on the hyperon resonances causing only a small additional broadening. An exception is the Σ(1690). At nuclear saturation density an attractive mass shift of about 20 MeV and width of about 130 MeV is obtained. The kaon shows a repulsive mass increase of 36 MeV and a small width of the quasiparticle peak at saturation density.

Covariant propagator of the Rarita-Schwinger field in the nuclear medium

A formalism for representing the fully relativistic propagator of the Rarita-Schwinger field in the nuclear medium is developed. Using a convenient basis for expanding the propagator, or the self energy, it is shown that they can be represented by 40 energy and momentum dependent quantities which can be combined into a 2x2 and a 6x6 matrix. In this way calculations reduce to matrix multiplication. Using the presented formalism the full relativistically covariant contribution of the pion-nucleon loop to the isobar self energy and propagator in isospin-symmetric spin-saturated nuclear medium is computed. Utilizing this propagator the photoabsorption cross-section on in-medium nucleons in the isobar region is calculated and the result compared with experimental data.

Self consistent and covariant propagation of pions, nucleon and isobar resonances in cold nuclear matter

We evaluate the in-medium spectral functions for pions, nucleon and isobar resonances in a self consistent and covariant manner. The calculations are based on a recently developed formulation which leads to predictions in terms of the pion-nucleon scattering phase shifts and a set of Migdal parameters describing important short range correlation effects. We do not observe significant softening of pion modes if we insist on reasonable isobar resonance properties but predict a considerable broadening of the N(1440) and N(1520) resonances in nuclear matter. Contrasted results are obtained for the s-wave N(1535) and N(1650) resonances which are affected by a nuclear environment very little. The properties of slowly moving isobar's in nuclear matter are found to depend very sensitively on a soft form factor in the piNN vertex, which is not controlled by the piN scattering data.

Chiral symmetry, strangeness and resonances

We review the important role played by the chiral SU(3) symmetry in predicting the properties of antikaons and hyperon resonances in cold nuclear matter. Objects of crucial importance are the meson-baryon scattering amplitudes obtained within the chiral coupled-channel effective field theory. The formation of baryon resonances as implied by chiral coupled-channel dynamics is discussed. Results for antikaon and hyperon-resonance spectral functions are presented for isospin symmetric and asymmetric matter.

Hyperon-nucleon scattering and hyperon masses in the nuclear medium

We analyze low-energy hyperon-nucleon scattering using an effective field theory in next-to-leading order. By fitting experimental cross sections for laboratory hyperon momenta below 200 MeV/c and using information from the hypertriton we determine twelve contact-interaction coefficients. Based on these we discuss the low-density expansion of hyperon mass shifts in the nuclear medium.
