Optical conductivity and vibrational spectra of the narrow-gap semiconductor FeGa$_3$

Intermetallic narrow-gap semiconductors have been intensively explored due to their large thermoelectric power at low temperatures and a possible role of strong electronic correlations in their unusual thermodynamic and transport properties. Here we study the optical spectra and vibrational properties of $\mathrm{FeGa_3}$ single crystal. The optical conductivity indicates that $\mathrm{FeGa_3}$ has a direct band gap of $\sim 0.7$\,eV, consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Most importantly, we find a substantial spectral weight also below 0.4~eV, which is the energy of the indirect (charge) gap found in resistivity measurements and ab initio calculations. We find that the spectral weight below the gap decreases with increasing temperature, which indicates that it originates from the impurity states and not from the electronic correlations. Interestingly, we did not find any signatures of the impurity states in vibrational spectra. The infrared and Raman vibrational lines are narrow and weakly temperature dependent. The vibrational frequencies are in excellent agreement with our DFT calculations, implying a modest role of electronic correlations. Narrow M\" ossbauer spectral lines also indicate high crystallinity of the sample.

Inclusive jet and hadron suppression in a multistage approach

We present a new study of jet interactions in the quark-gluon plasma created in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, using a multistage event generator within the JETSCAPE framework. We focus on medium-induced modifications in the rate of inclusive jets and high transverse momentum (high-$p_{\mathrm{T}}$) hadrons. Scattering-induced jet energy loss is calculated in two stages: A high virtuality stage based on the MATTER model, in which scattering of highly virtual partons modifies the vacuum radiation pattern, and a second stage at lower jet virtuality based on the LBT model, in which leading partons gain and lose virtuality by scattering and radiation. Coherence effects that reduce the medium-induced emission rate in the MATTER phase are also included. The TRENTo model is used for initial conditions, and the (2+1)dimensional VISHNU model is used for viscous hydrodynamic evolution. Jet interactions with the medium are modeled via 2-to-2 scattering with Debye screened potentials, in which the recoiling partons are tracked, hadronized, and included in the jet clustering. Holes left in the medium are also tracked and subtracted to conserve transverse momentum. Calculations of the nuclear modification factor ($R_{\mathrm{AA}}$) for inclusive jets and high-$p_{\mathrm{T}}$ hadrons are compared to experimental measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Within this framework, we find that with one extra parameter which codifies the transition between stages of jet modification -- along with the typical parameters such as the coupling in the medium, the start and stop criteria etc. -- we can describe these data at all energies for central and semicentral collisions without a rescaling of the jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}$.

Comprehensive Study of Multi-scale Jet-medium Interaction

We explore jet-medium interactions at various scales in high-energy heavy-ion collisions using the JETSCAPE framework. The physics of the multi-stage modeling and the coherence effect at high virtuality is discussed through the results of multiple jet and high-$p_{\mathrm{T}}$ particle observables, compared with experimental data. Furthermore, we investigate the jet-medium interaction involved in the hadronization process.

Wrinkling and crumpling in twisted few and multilayer CVD graphene: High density of edge modes influencing Raman spectra

Richness and complexity of Raman spectra related to graphene materials is established from years to decades, with, among others: the well-known G, D, 2D,... bands plus a plethora of weaker bands related to disorder behavior, doping, stress, crystal orientation or stacking information. Herein, we report on how to detect crumpling effects in Raman spectra, using a large variety of few and multilayer graphene. The main finding is that these crumples enhance the G band intensity like it does with twisted bi layer graphene. We updated the D over G band intensity ratio versus G band width plot, which is generally used to disentangle point and linear defects origin, by reporting surface defects created by crumples. Moreover, we report for the first time on the existence 23 resonant additional bands at 633 nm. We attribute them to edge modes formed by high density of crumples. We use Raman plots (2D bands versus G band positions and widths) to gain qualitative information about the way layers are stacked.

Bayesian analysis of QGP jet transport using multi-scale modeling applied to inclusive hadron and reconstructed jet data

The JETSCAPE Collaboration reports a new determination of jet transport coefficients in the Quark-Gluon Plasma, using both reconstructed jet and hadron data measured at RHIC and the LHC. The JETSCAPE framework incorporates detailed modeling of the dynamical evolution of the QGP; a multi-stage theoretical approach to in-medium jet evolution and medium response; and Bayesian inference for quantitative comparison of model calculations and data. The multi-stage framework incorporates multiple models to cover a broad range in scale of the in-medium parton shower evolution, with dynamical choice of model that depends on the current virtuality or energy of the parton. We will discuss the physics of the multi-stage modeling, and then present a new Bayesian analysis incorporating it. This analysis extends the recently published JETSCAPE determination of the jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$ that was based solely on inclusive hadron suppression data, by incorporating reconstructed jet measurements of quenching. We explore the functional dependence of jet transport coefficients on QGP temperature and jet energy and virtuality, and report the consistency and tensions found for current jet quenching modeling with hadron and reconstructed jet data over a wide range in kinematics and $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$. This analysis represents the next step in the program of comprehensive analysis of jet quenching phenomenology and its constraint of properties of the QGP.

Role of bulk viscosity in deuteron production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

We use a Bayesian-calibrated multistage viscous hydrodynamic model to explore deuteron yield, mean transverse momentum and flow observables in LHC Pb-Pb collisions. We explore theoretical uncertainty in the production of deuterons, including (i) the contribution of thermal deuterons, (ii) models for the subsequent formation of deuterons (hadronic transport vs coalescence) and (iii) the overall sensitivity of the results to the hydrodynamic model -- in particular to bulk viscosity, which is often neglected in studies of deuteron production. Using physical parameters set by a comparison to only light hadron observables, we find good agreement with measurements of the mean transverse momentum $\langle p_T \rangle$ and elliptic flow $v_2$ of deuterons; however, tension is observed with experimental data for the deuteron multiplicity in central collisions. The results are found to be sensitive to each of the mentioned theoretical uncertainties, with a particular sensitivity to bulk viscosity, indicating that the latter is an important ingredient for an accurate treatment of deuteron production.

The Long Period of 3He-rich Solar Energetic Particles Measured by Solar Orbiter on 2020 November 17-23

We report observations of a relatively long period of 3He-rich solar energetic particles (SEPs) measured by Solar Orbiter. The period consists of several well-resolved ion injections. The high-resolution STEREO-A imaging observations reveal that the injections coincide with EUV jets/brightenings near the east limb, not far from the nominal magnetic connection of Solar Orbiter. The jets originated in two adjacent, large, and complex active regions as observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory when the regions rotated to the Earth's view. It appears that the sustained ion injections were related to the complex configuration of the sunspot group and the long period of 3He-rich SEPs to the longitudinal extent covered by the group during the analyzed time period.

Measurements of Single Event Upset in ATLAS IBL

Effects of Single Event Upsets (SEU) and Single Event Transients (SET) are studied in the FE-I4B chip of the innermost layer of the ATLAS pixel system. SEU/SET affect the FE-I4B Global Registers as well as the settings for the individual pixels, causing, among other things, occupancy losses, drops in the low voltage currents, noisy pixels, and silent pixels. Quantitative data analysis and simulations indicate that SET dominate over SEU on the load line of the memory. Operational issues and mitigation techniques are presented.

Single-crystal and polycrystalline diamond erosion studies in Pilot-PSI

Diamond is a promising candidate for enhancing the negative-ion surface production in the ion sources for neutral injection in fusion reactors; hence evaluation of its reactivity towards hydrogen plasma is of high importance. High quality PECVD single crystal and polycrystalline diamond samples were exposed in Pilot-PSI with the D + flux of (4-7)$\times$10 24 m-2 s-1 and the impact energy of 7-9 eV per deuteron at different surface temperatures; under such conditions physical sputtering is negligible, however chemical sputtering is important. Net chemical sputtering yield $Y = 9.7\times 10^{-3}$ at/ion at 800$^\circ$C was precisely measured ex-situ using a protective platinum mask (5x10x2 $μ$m) deposited beforehand on a single crystal followed by the post-mortem analysis using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The structural properties of the exposed diamond surface were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Gross chemical sputtering yields were determined in-situ by means of optical emission spectroscopy of the molecular CH AX band for several surface temperatures. We observed a bell shape dependence of the erosion yield versus temperature between 400$^\circ$C and 1200$^\circ$C, with a maximum yield of ~1.5$\times$10-2 at/ion attained at 900$^\circ$C. The yields obtained for diamond are relatively high $(0.51.5)\times 10^{-2}$ at/ion, comparable with those of graphite. XPS analyses show amorphization of diamond surface within 1 nm depth, in good agreement with molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. MD was also applied to study the hydrogen impact energy threshold for erosion of [100] diamond surface at different temperatures.

Spin-orbit coupling and crystal-field distortions for a low-spin $3d^5$ state in BaCoO$_{3}$

We have studied the electronic structure of BaCoO$_3$ using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ and O-$K$ edges, magnetic circular dichroism at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ edges, as well as valence band hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The quantitative analysis of the spectra established that the Co ions are in the formal low-spin tetravalent 3$d^5$ state and that the system is a negative charge transfer Mott insulator. The spin-orbit coupling plays also an important role for the magnetism of the system. At the same time, a trigonal crystal field is present with sufficient strength to bring the 3$d^5$ ion away from the $J_{eff} = 1/2$ state. The sign of this crystal field is such that the $a_{1g}$ orbital is doubly occupied, explaining the absence of a Peierl's transition in this system which consists of chains of face-sharing CoO$_6$ octahedra. Moreover, with one hole residing in the $e_g^π$, the presence of an orbital moment and strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy can be understood. Yet, we also infer that crystal fields with lower symmetry must be present to reproduce the measured orbital moment quantitatively, thereby suggesting the possibility for orbital ordering to occur in BaCoO$_3$.

A Cold Stellar Stream in Pegasus

We report the serendipitous discovery of a stellar stream in the constellation Pegasus in the south Galactic hemisphere. The stellar stream was detected using the SDSS Data Release 14 by means of a matched filter in the color--magnitude diagram that is optimised for a stellar population that is 8 Gyr old with [Fe/H] = $-$0.46 dex, and located at heliocentric distance of 18 kpc. The candidate stream is faint (turnoff point at $r_0 \sim$ 19.6), sparse and barely visible in SDSS photometry. It is also detected in the (shallower) Pan-STARRs data. The residual stellar density in the $(u-g)_0$, $(g-r)_0$ color--color diagram gives the same estimate for the age and [Fe/H] of this stellar population. The stream is located at a Galactic coordinates $(l,b) = (79.4,-24.6)$ and extends over 9$^\circ$ (2.5 kpc), with a width of 112 pc. The narrow width suggests a globular cluster progenitor.

Star Cluster Catalogs for the LEGUS Dwarf Galaxies

We present the star cluster catalogs for 17 dwarf and irregular galaxies in the $HST$ Treasury Program "Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey" (LEGUS). Cluster identification and photometry in this subsample are similar to that of the entire LEGUS sample, but special methods were developed to provide robust catalogs with accurate fluxes due to low cluster statistics. The colors and ages are largely consistent for two widely used aperture corrections, but a significant fraction of the clusters are more compact than the average training cluster. However, the ensemble luminosity, mass, and age distributions are consistent suggesting that the systematics between the two methods are less than the random errors. When compared with the clusters from previous dwarf galaxy samples, we find that the LEGUS catalogs are more complete and provide more accurate total fluxes. Combining all clusters into a composite dwarf galaxy, we find that the luminosity and mass functions can be described by a power law with the canonical index of $-2$ independent of age and global SFR binning. The age distribution declines as a power law, with an index of $\approx-0.80\pm0.15$, independent of cluster mass and global SFR binning. This decline of clusters is dominated by cluster disruption since the combined star formation histories and integrated-light SFRs are both approximately constant over the last few hundred Myr. Finally, we find little evidence for an upper-mass cutoff ($<2σ$) in the composite cluster mass function, and can rule out a truncation mass below $\approx10^{4.5}$M$_{\odot}$ but cannot rule out the existence of a truncation at higher masses.

Magnetic transitions in CaMn7O12 : a Raman observation of spin-phonon couplings

The quadruple Calcium manganite (CaMn7O12) is a multiferroic material that exhibits a giant magnetically-induced ferroelectric polarization which makes it very interesting for magnetoelectric applications. Here, we report the Raman spectroscopy study on this compound of both the phonon modes and the low energy excitations from 4 K to room temperature. A detailed study of the Raman active phonon excitations shows that three phonon modes evidence a spin-phonon coupling at TN2 = 50 K. In particular, we show that the mode at 432 cm-1 associated to Mn(B)O6 (B position of the perovskite) rotations around the [111] cubic diagonal is impacted by the magnetic transition at 50 K and its coupling to the new modulation of the Mn spin in the (a,b) plane. At low energies, two large low energy excitations are observed at 25 and 47 cm-1. The first one disappears at 50 K and the second one at 90 K. We have associated these excitations to electro-magneto-active modes.

Evidence for unconventional superconductivity in Half-Heusler YPdBi and TbPdBi compounds revealed by London penetration depth measurements

The half-Heusler compounds YPdBi and TbPdBi, while having similar band structure, exhibit different magnetic properties. YPdBi is a diamagnet, while TbPdBi shows antiferromagnetic order below 5.5 K. Both are superconductors with T${_c}\approx$1 K for YPdBi and T${_c}\approx$1.75 K for TbPdBi. Such a contrast in properties between these two compounds opens a question about the effects of band structure or magnetic correlations on superconductivity. Using the combination of a tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) and a commercial dilution refrigerator, we measured temperature dependent magnetic penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ in single crystals of YPdBi and TbPdBi, down to temperatures as low as 0.1K. We found that penetration depths of both compounds do not show exponential temperature dependence and saturation at low temperatures, as expected for conventional BCS superconductors. Instead, in both compounds, the penetration depth can be described by a power law $Δλ(T) = A\times T^{n}$. The coefficient A was found to be about 50$\%$ smaller in TbPdBi, but the exponents are very similar, $n = 2.76\pm 0.04$ in YPdBi and $n = 2.6\pm 0.3$ in TbPdBi, respectively. Our results suggest unconventional superconductivity in both YPdBi and TbPdBi.

The resolved stellar populations in the LEGUS galaxies

The Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) is a multiwavelength Cycle 21 Treasury program on the Hubble Space Telescope. It studied 50 nearby star-forming galaxies in five bands from the near UV to the I-band, combining new Wide Field Camera 3 observations with archival Advanced Camera for Surveys data. LEGUS was designed to investigate how star formation occurs and develops on both small and large scales, and how it relates to the galactic environments. In this paper we present the photometric catalogs for all the apparently single stars identified in the 50 LEGUS galaxies. Photometric catalogs and mosaicked images for all filters are available for download. We present optical and near UV color-magnitude diagrams for all the galaxies. For each galaxy we derived the distance from the tip of the red giant branch. We then used the NUV color-magnitude diagrams to identify stars more massive than 14 Mo, and compared their number with the number of massive stars expected from the GALEX FUV luminosity. Our analysis shows that the fraction of massive stars forming in star clusters and stellar associations is about constant with the star formation rate. This lack of a relation suggests that the time scale for evaporation of unbound structures is comparable or longer than 10 Myr. At low star formation rates this translates to an excess of mass in clustered environments as compared to model predictions of cluster evolution, suggesting that a significant fraction of stars form in unbound systems.

Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey with The Hubble Space Telescope. Stellar cluster catalogues and first insights into cluster formation and evolution in NGC 628

We report the large effort which is producing comprehensive high-level young star cluster (YSC) catalogues for a significant fraction of galaxies observed with the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) Hubble treasury program. We present the methodology developed to extract cluster positions, verify their genuine nature, produce multiband photometry (from NUV to NIR), and derive their physical properties via spectral energy distribution fitting analyses. We use the nearby spiral galaxy NGC628 as a test case for demonstrating the impact that LEGUS will have on our understanding of the formation and evolution of YSCs and compact stellar associations within their host galaxy. Our analysis of the cluster luminosity function from the UV to the NIR finds a steepening at the bright end and at all wavelengths suggesting a dearth of luminous clusters. The cluster mass function of NGC628 is consistent with a power-law distribution of slopes $\sim -2$ and a truncation of a few times $10^5$ M$_\odot$. After their formation YSCs and compact associations follow different evolutionary paths. YSCs survive for a longer timeframe, confirming their being potentially bound systems. Associations disappear on time scales comparable to hierarchically organized star-forming regions, suggesting that they are expanding systems. We find mass-independent cluster disruption in the inner region of NGC628, while in the outer part of the galaxy there is little or no disruption. We observe faster disruption rates for low mass ($\leq$ $10^4$ M$_\odot$) clusters suggesting that a mass-dependent component is necessary to fully describe the YSC disruption process in NGC628.

Modulated spin helicity stabilized by incommensurate orbital density waves in a quadruple perovskite manganite

Through a combination of neutron diffraction and Landau theory we describe the spin ordering in the ground state of the quadruple perovskite manganite CaMn7O12 - a magnetic multiferroic supporting an incommensurate orbital density wave that onsets above the magnetic ordering temperature, TN1 = 90 K. The multi-k magnetic structure in the ground state was found to be a nearly-constant-moment helix with modulated spin helicity, which oscillates in phase with the orbital occupancies on the Mn3+ sites via trilinear magneto-orbital coupling. Our phenomenological model also shows that, above TN2 = 48 K, the primary magnetic order parameter is locked into the orbital wave by an admixture of helical and collinear spin density wave structures. Furthermore, our model naturally explains the lack of a sharp dielectric anomaly at TN1 and the unusual temperature dependence of the electrical polarisation.

The VIPERS Multi-Lambda Survey. I. UV and NIR Observations, multi-color catalogues and photometric redshifts

We present observations collected in the CFHTLS-VIPERS region in the ultraviolet (UV) with the GALEX satellite (far and near UV channels) and the near infrared with the CFHT/WIRCam camera ($K_s$-band) over an area of 22 and 27 deg$^2$, respectively. The depth of the photometry was optimized to measure the physical properties (e.g., SFR, stellar masses) of all the galaxies in the VIPERS spectroscopic survey. The large volume explored by VIPERS will enable a unique investigation of the relationship between the galaxy properties and their environment (density field and cosmic web) at high redshift (0.5 < z < 1.2). In this paper, we present the observations, the data reductions and the build-up of the multi-color catalogues. The CFHTLS-T0007 (gri-χ^2) images are used as reference to detect and measure the $K_s$-band photometry, while the T0007 u-selected sources are used as priors to perform the GALEX photometry based on a dedicated software (EMphot). Our final sample reaches $NUV_{AB}$~25 (at 5σ) and $K_{AB}$~22 (at 3σ). The large spectroscopic sample (~51,000 spectroscopic redshifts) allows us to highlight the robustness of our star/galaxy separation, and the reliability of our photometric redshifts with a typical accuracy $σ_z \le$ 0.04 and a catastrophic failure rate η < 2% down to i~23. We present various tests on the $K_s$ band completeness and photometric redshift accuracy by comparing with existing, overlapping deep photometric catalogues. Finally, we discuss the BzK sample of passive and active galaxies at high redshift and the evolution of galaxy morphology in the (NUV-r) vs (r-K_s) diagram at low redshift (z < 0.25) thanks to the high image quality of the CFHTLS. The images, catalogues and photometric redshifts for 1.5 million sources (down to $NUV \le$ 25 or $K_s \le$ 22) are released and available at this URL: http://cesam.lam.fr/vipers-mls/
