nuSTORM - Neutrinos from STORed Muons: Proposal to the Fermilab PAC

The nuSTORM facility has been designed to deliver beams of electron neutrinos and muon neutrinos (and their anti-particles) from the decay of a stored muon beam with a central momentum of 3.8 GeV/c and a momentum acceptance of 10%. The facility is unique in that it will: 1. Allow searches for sterile neutrinos of exquisite sensitivity to be carried out; 2. Serve future long- and short-baseline neutrino-oscillation programs by providing definitive measurements of electron neutrino and muon neutrino scattering cross sections off nuclei with percent-level precision; and 3. Constitutes the crucial first step in the development of muon accelerators as a powerful new technique for particle physics. The document describes the facility in detail and demonstrates its physics capabilities. This document was submitted to the Fermilab Physics Advisory Committee in consideration for Stage I approval.

Signatures of Cool Gas Fueling a Star-Forming Galaxy at Redshift 2.3

Galaxies are thought to be fed by the continuous accretion of intergalactic gas, but direct observational evidence has been elusive. The accreted gas is expected to orbit about the galaxy's halo, delivering not just fuel for star-formation but also angular momentum to the galaxy, leading to distinct kinematic signatures. Here we report observations showing these distinct signatures near a typical distant star-forming galaxy where the gas is detected using a background quasar passing 26 kpc from the host. Our observations indicate that gas accretion plays a major role in galaxy growth since the estimated accretion rate is comparable to the star-formation rate.

Neutrinos from Stored Muons nuSTORM: Expression of Interest

The nuSTORM facility has been designed to deliver beams of electron and muon neutrinos from the decay of a stored muon beam with a central momentum of 3.8 GeV/c and a momentum spread of 10%. The facility is unique in that it will: serve the future long- and short-baseline neutrino-oscillation programmes by providing definitive measurements of electron-neutrino- and muon-neutrino-nucleus cross sections with percent-level precision; allow searches for sterile neutrinos of exquisite sensitivity to be carried out; and constitute the essential first step in the incremental development of muon accelerators as a powerful new technique for particle physics. Of the world's proton-accelerator laboratories, only CERN and FNAL have the infrastructure required to mount nuSTORM. Since no siting decision has yet been taken, the purpose of this Expression of Interest (EoI) is to request the resources required to: investigate in detail how nuSTORM could be implemented at CERN; and develop options for decisive European contributions to the nuSTORM facility and experimental programme wherever the facility is sited. The EoI defines a two-year programme culminating in the delivery of a Technical Design Report.

Quantum oscillations and optical conductivity in Rashba spin-splitting BiTeI

We report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in single crystals of the Rashba spin-splitting compound BiTeI, from both longitudinal ($R_{xx}(B)$) and Hall ($R_{xy}(B)$) magnetoresistance. Under magnetic field up to 65 T, we resolved unambiguously only one frequency $F = 284.3\pm 1.3$ T, corresponding to a Fermi momentum $k_{F} = 0.093\pm 0.002$Å$^{-1}$.The amplitude of oscillations is strongly suppressed by tilting magnetic field, suggesting a highly two-dimensional Fermi surface. Combining with optical spectroscopy, we show that quantum oscillations may be consistent with a bulk conduction band having a Rashba splitting momentum $k_{R}=0.046\pm$Å$^{-1}$.

Bulk Fermi surface and electronic properties of Cu$_{0.07}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$

The electronic properties of Cu$_{0.07}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ have been investigated using Shubnikov-de Haas and optical reflectance measurements. Quantum oscillations reveal a bulk, three-dimensional Fermi surface with anisotropy $k^{c}_{F}/k^{ab}_{F}\approx$ 2 and a modest increase in free-carrier concentration and in scattering rate with respect to the undoped Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, also confirmed by reflectivity data. The effective mass is almost identical to that of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. Optical conductivity reveals a strong enhancement of the bound impurity bands with Cu addition, suggesting that a significant number of Cu atoms enter the interstitial sites between Bi and Se layers or may even substitute for Bi. This conclusion is also supported by X-ray diffraction measurements, where a significant increase of microstrain was found in Cu$_{0.07}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, compared to Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$.

Magnetic field tuned quantum criticality of heavy fermion system YbPtBi

In this paper, we present the systematic measurements of the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the thermodynamic and transport properties of the Yb-based heavy fermion YbPtBi for temperatures down to 0.02 K with magnetic fields up to 140 kOe to address the possible existence of a field-tuned quantum critical point. Measurements of magnetic field and temperature dependent resistivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, Hall effect, and thermoelectric power indicate that the AFM order can be suppressed by applied magnetic field of $H_{c}$ $\sim$ 4 kOe. In the $H-T$ phase diagram of YbPtBi, three regimes of its low temperature states emerges: (I) AFM state, characterized by spin density wave (SDW) like feature, which can be suppressed to $T$ = 0 by the relatively small magnetic field of $H_{c}$ $\sim$ 4\,kOe, (II) field induced anomalous state in which the electrical resistivity follows $Δρ(T) \propto T^{1.5}$ between $H_{c}$ and $\sim$ 8 kOe, and (III) Fermi liquid (FL) state in which $Δρ(T) \propto T^{2}$ for $H \geq$ 8 kOe. Regions I and II are separated at $T$ = 0 by what appears to be a quantum critical point. Whereas region III appears to be a FL associated with the hybridized 4$f$ states of Yb, region II may be a manifestation of a spin liquid state.

Investigation of infrared phonon modes in multiferroic single-crystal FeTe$_{2}$O$_{5}$Br

Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature (5--300 K) have been measured on single crystals of the multiferroic compound FeTe$_{2}$O$_{5}$Br utilizing light spanning the far infrared to the visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex dielectric function and optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lortentz model. Analysis of the anisotropic excitation spectra via Drude-Lorentz fitting and lattice dynamical calculations have lead to the observation of all 52 IR-active modes predicted in the $ac$ plane and 43 or the 53 modes predicted along the b axis of the monoclinic cell. Assignments to groups (clusters) of phonons have been made and trends within them are discussed in light of our calculated displacement patterns.

Effect of a magnetic field on the quasiparticle recombination in superconductors

Quasiparticle recombination in a superconductor with an s-wave gap is typically dominated by a phonon bottleneck effect. We have studied how a magnetic field changes this recombination process in metallic thin-film superconductors, finding that the quasiparticle recombination process is significantly slowed as the field increases. While we observe this for all field orientations, we focus here on the results for a field applied parallel to the thin film surface, minimizing the influence of vortices. The magnetic field disrupts the time-reversal symmetry of the pairs, giving them a finite lifetime and decreasing the energy gap. The field could also polarize the quasiparticle spins, producing different populations of spin-up and spin-down quasiparticles. Both processes favor slower recombination; in our materials we conclude that strong spin-orbit scattering reduces the spin polarization, leaving the field-induced gap reduction as the dominant effect and accounting quantitatively for the observed recombination rate reduction.

Infrared phonon anomaly and magnetic excitations in single-crystal Cu$_{3}$Bi(SeO$_{3}$)$_{2}$O$_{2}$Cl

Infrared reflection and transmission as a function of temperature have been measured on single crystals of Cu$_{3}$Bi(SeO$_{3}$)$_{2}$O$_{2}$Cl. The complex dielectric function and optical properties along all three principal axes of the orthorhombic cell were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lorentz model. Below 115 K, 16 additional modes (8(E$\parallel\hat{a}$)+6(E$\parallel\hat{b}$)+2(E$\parallel\hat{c}$)) appear in the phonon spectra; however, powder x-ray diffraction measurements do not detect a new structure at 85 K. Potential explanations for the new phonon modes are discussed. Transmission in the far infrared as a function of temperature has revealed magnetic excitations originating below the magnetic ordering temperature ($T_{c}\sim$24 K). The origin of the excitations in the magnetically ordered state will be discussed in terms of their response to different polarizations of incident light, behavior in externally-applied magnetic fields, and the anisotropic magnetic properties of Cu$_{3}$Bi(SeO$_{3}$)$_{2}$O$_{2}$Cl as determined by d.c. susceptibility measurements.

Temperature dependent infrared spectroscopy of the Rashba spin-splitting semiconductor BiTeI

We performed temperature dependent infrared spectroscopy measurements on BiTeI single crystals, which exhibit large Rashba spin-splitting. Similar to a previous optical study, we found electronic excitations in good agreement with spin-split electronic bands. In addition, we report a low energy intraband transition with an onset energy of about 40 meV and an unexpectedly large number of vibrational modes in the far-infrared spectral region. At least some of the modes have asymmetric Fano line-shape. These new observations cannot be explained considering only the bulk band structure or crystal symmetry of BiTeI, and we proposed that the optical response is also affected by the surface topology.

Magneto-orbital helices and multiferroicity

Orbitally ordered states evolving coincidentally with structural distortions and magnetic ordering provide a novel route to controlling electronic and magnetic properties of materials through external fields. We report an unprecedented magneto-orbital helix in CaMn7O12, found to give rise to the largest magnetically induced ferroelectric polarisation measured to date. Characterisation of the structural modulation using x-ray diffraction, and analysis of magnetic exchange shows that orbital order is crucial in stabilising a chiral magnetic structure, thus allowing for electric polarisation. Additionally, the presence of a global structural rotation enables the coupling between this polarisation and magnetic helicity required for multiferrocitiy. These novel principles open up the possibility of discovering new high-temperature multiferroics.

An Experimental and Semi-Empirical Method to Determine the Pauli-Limiting Field in Quasi 2D Superconductors as applied to $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$: Strong Evidence of a FFLO State

We present upper critical field data for $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ with the magnetic field close to parallel and parallel to the conducting layers. We show that we can eliminate the effect of vortex dynamics in these layered materials if the layers are oriented within 0.3 degrees of parallel to the applied magnetic field. Eliminating vortex effects leaves one remaining feature in the data that corresponds to the Pauli paramagnetic limit ($H_p$). We propose a semi-empirical method to calculate the $H_p$ in quasi 2D superconductors. This method takes into account the energy gap of each of the quasi 2D superconductors, which is calculated from specific heat data, and the influence of many body effects. The calculated Pauli paramagnetic limits are then compared to critical field data for the title compound and other organic conductors. Many of the examined quasi 2D superconductors, including the above organic superconductors and CeCoIn$_5$, exhibit upper critical fields that exceed their calculated $H_p$ suggesting unconventional superconductivity. We show that the high field low temperature state in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ is consistent with the Fulde Ferrell Larkin Ovchinnikov state.

Characterization of the Hamamatsu S8664 Avalanche Photodiode for X-Ray and VUV-light detection

We present the first operation of the Avalanche Photodiode (APD) from Hamamatsu to xenon scintillation light and to direct X-rays of 22.1 keV and 5.9 keV. A large non-linear response was observed for the direct X-ray detection. At 415 V APD bias voltage it was of about 30 % for 22.1 keV and about 45 % for 5.9 keV. The quantum efficiency for 172 nm photons has been measured to be 69 +/- 15 %.

A search for non-virialized axionic dark matter

Cold dark matter in the Milky Way halo may have structure defined by flows with low velocity dispersion. The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment high resolution channel is especially sensitive to axions in such low velocity dispersion flows. Results from a combined power spectra analysis of the high resolution channel axion search are presented along with a discussion of the assumptions underlying such an analysis. We exclude KSVZ axion dark matter densities of ρ > 0.2 GeV/cm^3 and DFSZ densities of ρ > 1.4 GeV/cm^3 over a mass range of m_a = 3.3μeV to 3.69μeV for models having velocity dispersions of Δβ < 3x10^-6.

Giant improper ferroelectricity in the ferroaxial magnet CaMn7O12

In rhombohedral CaMn7O12, an improper ferroelectric polarization of magnitude 2870 μC m-2 is induced by an incommensurate helical magnetic structure that evolves below TN1 = 90 K. The electric polarization was found to be constrained to the high symmetry three-fold rotation axis of the crystal structure, perpendicular to the in-plane rotation of the magnetic moments. The multiferroicity is explained by the ferroaxial coupling mechanism, which in CaMn7O12 gives rise to the largest magnetically induced, electric polarization measured to date.

Very Strong Emission-Line Galaxies in the WISP Survey and Implications for High-Redshift Galaxies

The WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallel Survey (WISP) uses the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) infrared grism capabilities to obtain slitless spectra of thousands of galaxies over a wide redshift range including the peak of star formation history of the Universe. We select a population of very strong emission-line galaxies with rest-frame equivalent widths higher than 200 A. A total of 176 objects are found over the redshift range 0.35 < z < 2.3 in the 180 arcmin^2 area we analyzed so far. After estimating the AGN fraction in the sample, we show that this population consists of young and low-mass starbursts with higher specific star formation rates than normal star-forming galaxies at any redshift. After spectroscopic follow-up of one of these galaxies with Keck/LRIS, we report the detection at z = 0.7 of an extremely metal-poor galaxy with 12+Log(O/H)= 7.47 +- 0.11. The nebular emission-lines can substantially affect the broadband flux density with a median brightening of 0.3 mag, with examples producing brightening of up to 1 mag. The presence of strong emission lines in low-z galaxies can mimic the color-selection criteria used in the z ~ 8 dropout surveys. In order to effectively remove low redshift interlopers, deep optical imaging is needed, at least 1 mag deeper than the bands in which the objects are detected. Finally, we empirically demonstrate that strong nebular lines can lead to an overestimation of the mass and the age of galaxies derived from fitting of their SED. Without removing emission lines, the age and the stellar mass estimates are overestimated by a factor of 2 on average and up to a factor of 10 for the high-EW galaxies. Therefore the contribution of emission lines should be systematically taken into account in SED fitting of star-forming galaxies at all redshifts.

Design and performance of the ADMX SQUID-based microwave receiver

The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) was designed to detect ultra-weakly interacting relic axion particles by searching for their conversion to microwave photons in a resonant cavity positioned in a strong magnetic field. Given the extremely low expected axion-photon conversion power we have designed, built and operated a microwave receiver based on a Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID). We describe the ADMX receiver in detail as well as the analysis of narrow band microwave signals. We demonstrate the sustained use of a SQUID amplifier operating between 812 and 860 MHz with a noise temperature of 1 K. The receiver has a noise equivalent power of 1.1x10^-24 W/sqrt(Hz) in the band of operation for an integration time of 1.8x10^3 s.
