Electronic structure of Pr$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ near the Fermi level studied by ultraviolet photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We have investigated the temperature-dependent changes in the near-$E$$_F$ occupied and unoccupied states of Pr$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ which shows the presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The temperature-dependent changes in the charge and orbital degrees of freedom and associated changes in the Mn 3$d$ - O 2$p$ hybridization result in varied O 2$p$ contributions to the valence band. A quantitative estimate of the charge transfer energy ($E$$_{CT}$) shows a larger value compared to the earlier reported estimates. The charge localization causing the large $E$$_{CT}$ is discussed in terms of different models including the electronic phase separation.

The antiferromagnetic insulator Ca3FeRhO6: characterization and electronic structure calculations

We investigate the antiferromagnetic insulating nature of Ca3FeRhO6 both experimentally and theoretically. Susceptibility measurements reveal a Neel temperature T_N = 20 K, and a magnetic moment of 5.3 muB/f. u., while Moessbauer spectroscopy strongly suggests that the Fe ions, located in trigonal prismatic sites, are in a 3+ high spin state. Transport measurements display a simple Arrhenius law, with an activation energy of 0.2 eV. The experimental results are interpreted with LSDA band structure calculations, which confirm the Fe 3+ state, the high-spin/low-spin scenario, the antiferromagnetic ordering, and the value for the activation energy.

Metastable diamagnetism in Sm0.1Ca0.84Sr0.06MnO3 manganite

Magnetic properties of polycrystalline Sm0.1Ca0.84Sr0.06MnO3 in pristine and metastable states have been investigated in wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. It was found that below Curie temperature TC = 105 K the pristine state exhibits phase separation comprising ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The metastable states with reduced magnetization were obtained by successive number of quick coolings of the sample placed in container with kerosene-oil mixture. By an increasing number of quick coolings (> 6) the long time relaxation appeared at 10 K and the magnetization reversed its sign and became strongly negative in wide temperature range, even under an applied magnetic field of 15 kOe. The observed field and temperature dependences of the magnetization in this state are reversed in comparison with the ordinary ferromagnetic ones. Above TC, the observed diamagnetic susceptibility of the reversed magnetization state at T = 120 K is ~ - 0.9 x 10-4 emu g-1 Oe-1. Only after some storage time at room temperature, the abnormal magnetic state is erasable. It is suggested that the negative magnetization observed results from a specific coupling of the nano/micro-size ferromagnetic regions with a surrounding diamagnetic matrix formed, in a puzzled way, by the repeating training (quick cooling) cycles.

Magnetic field induced lattice anomaly inside the superconducting state of CeCoIn$_5$: evidence of the proposed Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

We report high magnetic field linear magnetostriction experiments on CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals. Two features are remarkable: (i) a sharp discontinuity in all the crystallographic axes associated with the upper superconducting critical field $B_{c2}$ that becomes less pronounced as the temperature increases; (ii) a distinctive second order-like feature observed only along the c-axis in the high field (10 T $ \lesssim B \leq B_{c2}$) low temperature ($T \lesssim$ 0.35 K) region. This second order transition is observed only when the magnetic field lies within 20$^o$ of the ab-planes and there is no signature of it above $B_{c2}$, which raises questions regarding its interpretation as a field induced magnetically ordered phase. Good agreement with previous results suggests that this anomaly is related to the transition to the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting state.

Structural phase transition and magnetism in hexagonal srmno

The structural and magnetic properties of the hexagonal four-layer form of SrMnO$_3$ have been investigated by combining magnetization measurements, electron diffraction and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Below 350K, there is subtle structural phase transition from hexagonal symmetry (space group $P6_3/mmc$) to orthorhombic symmetry (space group $C222_1$) where the hexagonal metric is preserved. The second-order phase transition involves a slight tilting of the corner-sharing Mn$_{2}$O$_{9}$ units composed of 2 face-sharing MnO$_6$ octahedra and the associated displacement of Sr$^{2+}$ cations. The phase transition is described in terms of symmetry-adapted displacement modes of the high symmetry phase. Upon further cooling, long range magnetic order with propagation vector $\mathbf{k}=(0,0,0)$ sets in below 300K. The antiferromagnetic structure, analyzed using representation theory, shows a considerably reduced magnetic moment indicating the crucial role played by direct exchange between Mn centers of the Mn$_{2}$O$_{9}$ units.

Dielectric catastrophe at the magnetic field induced insulator to metal transition in Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (x=0.30, 0.37) crystals

The dielectric permittivity and resistivity have been measured simultaneously as a function of magnetic field in Pr1-xCaxMnO3 crystals with different doping. A huge increase of dielectric permittivity was detected near percolation threshold. The dielectric and conductive properties are found to be mutually correlated throughout insulator to metal transition evidencing the dielectric catastrophe phenomenon. Data are analyzed in a framework of Maxwell-Garnett theory and the Mott-Hubbard theory attributed to the role of strong Coulomb interactions.

Infrared observation of the Hund's mechanism in an electron-doped manganite

In the mid-infrared absorption of Sr{1-x}Ce{x}MnO{3} at low electron doping (x = 0.05), a band at 0.3 eV is fully replaced by another one at 0.9 eV as the system becomes antiferromagnetic (AF) of type $G$. A weaker effect occurs at x = 0.10 for an AF phase of type $C$. One thus directly measures the electron hopping energies for spin parallel and anti-parallel to that of the host ion. The Hund's, crystal-field, and Jahn-Teller splittings for the Mn{3+} ions in a Mn{4+} matrix, can also be derived.

Interplay between itinerant and localized states in CaMn1-xRuxO3 (x =0 - 0.5) manganites

Magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaMn1-xRuxO3 (x = 0 - 0.5) samples were investigated in the temperature range 4.2 - 250 K, under external magnetic field up to 15 kOe and under hydrostatic pressure up to 12 kbar. Transport properties of the samples with x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5 were also investigated under pressure up to 10 kbar. For x up to 0.4, the pressure was found to suppress ferromagnetic correlations and to increase the resistivity, while for x = 0.5 to act in the opposite way. While long ferromagnetic order is completely suppressed, in small clusters ferromagnetic correlations probably survive under pressure, as was revealed for CaMn0.9Ru0.1O3. The pressure effect on the magnetic interactions and on the volume of ferromagnetic phase was found to depend strongly on the Ru-content, and absolute value of the pressure coefficient of spontaneous magnetization was found to decrease practically linearly with increasing x in the range 0.1 < x < 0.5. The experimental data are discussed in the frame of proposed energy-level diagram, which includes magneto-impurity states at low and moderate Ru-doping and mixed-valence states of Ru presented by a strongly-correlated t2g-like band at heavy Ru-doping. An impact of disorder introduced by Ru-doping on the energy diagram and on derived magnetic interactions is discussed. Predictions of the model regarding the pressure effects on conductivity and temperature scales characteristic for magnetic interactions are in reasonable agreement with experiment.

Raman spectroscopy on cubic and hexagonal SrMnO$_3$

We report on the first optical characterization of both cubic and hexagonal SrMnO$_3$. Room-temperature Raman spectra collected by means of a micro-Raman spectrometer are shown. The spectrum of the cubic compound is characterized by weak and broad bands in agreement with group-theory which predicts no Raman-active phonons for this compound. On the other hand, the spectrum of the hexagonal compound shows six narrow peaks ascribed to one-phonon processes. A complete polarization analysis of the spectra collected from a single crystallite allows us to completely assign the symmetries of the six observed peaks. Atomic displacements for each phonon peaks are also proposed.

Extinction law variations and dust excitation in the spiral galaxy NGC 300

We investigate the origin of the strong radial gradient in the ultraviolet-to-infrared ratio in the spiral galaxy NGC 300, and emphasize the importance of local variations in the interstellar medium geometry, concluding that they cannot be neglected with respect to metallicity effects. This analysis is based upon a combination of maps from GALEX and Spitzer, and from the ground (UBVRI, Halpha and Hbeta). We select ionizing stellar clusters associated with HII regions of widely varying morphologies, and derive their fundamental parameters from population synthesis fitting of their spectral energy distributions, measured to eliminate local backgrounds accurately. From these fits, we conclude that the stellar extinction law is highly variable in the line of sight of young clusters of similar ages. In the particular model geometry that we consider most appropriate to the sampled regions, we checked that our findings are not significantly altered by the correct treatment of radiative transfer effects. The variations are systematic in nature: extinction laws of the Milky Way or LMC type are associated with compact HII regions (the compacity being quantified in two different ways), while clusters surrounded by diffuse HII regions follow extinction laws of the 30 Doradus or SMC type. The Calzetti starburst attenuation law, although most often degenerate with the 30 Doradus extinction law, overpredicts ionizing photon fluxes by large amounts. We also find that the extinction law variations are correlated with the column density of dust species emitting in the near- and mid-infrared. Finally, we briefly discuss the nebular to stellar extinction ratios, and the excitation of aromatic band carriers, invalidating their claimed association with cold dust.

Classification and Characterization of Objects from GALEX and SDSS surveys

We use the GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) Medium Imaging Survey (MIS) and All-Sky Imaging Survey (AIS) data available in the first internal release, matched to the SDSS catalogs in the overlapping regions, to classify objects by comparing the multi-band photometry to model colors. We show an example of the advantage of such broad wavelength coverage (GALEX far-UV and near-UV, SDSS ugriz) in classifying objects and augmenting the existing samples and catalogs. From the MIS [AIS] sample over an area of 75 [92] square degrees, we select a total of 1736 [222] QSO candidates at redshift less than 2, significantly extending the number of fainter candidates, and moderately increasing the number of bright objects in the SDSS list of spectroscopically confirmed QSO. Numerous hot stellar objects are also revealed by the UV colors, as expected.

Recent star formation in nearby galaxies from GALEX imaging:M101 and M51

The GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) Nearby Galaxies Survey is providing deep far-UV and near-UV imaging for a representative sample of galaxies in the local universe. We present early results for M51 and M101, from GALEX UV imaging and SDSS optical data in five bands. The multi-band photometry of compact stellar complexes in M101 is compared to population synthesis models, to derive ages, reddening, reddening-corrected luminosities and current/initial masses. The GALEX UV photometry provides a complete census of young compact complexes on a approximately 160pc scale. A galactocentric gradient of the far-UV - near-UV color indicates younger stellar populations towards the outer parts of the galaxy disks, the effect being more pronounced in M101 than in M51.

Panoramic GALEX FUV and NUV imaging of M31 and M33

We present Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) far-UV and near-UV mosaic observations covering the entirety of M31 and M33. For both targets, we measure the decline of surface brightness (in FUV and NUV) and changes in FUV--NUV color as a function of galactocentric radius. These UV radial profiles are compared to the distribution of ionized gas traced by H-alpha emission. We find that the extent of the UV emission, in both targets, is greater than the extent of the observed HII regions and diffuse ionized gas. We determine the ultraviolet diffuse fraction in M33 using our FUV observations and compare it to the H-alpha diffuse fraction obtained from wide-field narrow-band imaging. The FUV diffuse fraction appears to be remarkably constant near 0.65 over a large range in galactocentric radius, with departures to higher values in circumnuclear regions and, most notably, at the limit of the H-alpha disk. We suggest that the increase in FUV diffuse fraction at large galactocentric radii could indicate that a substantial portion of the diffuse emission beyond this point is not generated in situ but rather scattered from dust, after originating in the vicinity of the disk's outermost HII regions. Radial variation of the H-alpha diffuse fraction was also measured. We found the H-alpha diffuse fraction generally near 0.4 but rising toward the galaxy center, up to 0.6. We made no attempt to correct our diffuse fraction measurements for position-dependent extinction, so the quoted values are best interpreted as upper limits given the plausibly higher extinction for stellar clusters relative to their surroundings.

Recent Star Formation in the Extreme Outer Disk of M83

Ultraviolet imaging with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) has revealed an extensive sample of UV-bright stellar complexes in the extreme outer disk of M83, extending to about four times the radius where the majority of HII regions are detected (R_HII = 5.1' or 6.6 kpc). These sources are typically associated with large-scale filamentary HI structures in the warped outer disk of M83, and are distributed beyond the galactocentric radii at which molecular ISM has yet been detected. We present measured properties of these stellar complexes, including FUV and NUV magnitudes and local gas surface density. Only a subset of the outer disk UV sources have corresponding HII regions detected in H-alpha imaging, consistent with a sample of mixed age in which some sources are a few Myr old and others are much more evolved (~ 10^8 yr).

Evidence for the FFLO state in CeCoIn_5 from penetration depth measurements

We report penetration depth and resistivity measurements on the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 using a self resonant tank circuit based on a tunnel diode oscillator. For magnetic fields applied near parallel to the \emph{ab}-planes and temperatures below 250 mK, two phase transitions were found. The lower field transition, within the superconducting state, is of a second order and we identify it as the transition from the ordinary vortex state to the Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. The higher field transition marks the change from the FFLO to the normal state. This higher field transition, $H_{c2}$, is of first order up to 900 mK, the highest temperature measured. Our normal state resistivity measurements at temperatures between 100 and 900 mK suggest that the FFLO state is related to the change of the quasi-particle interaction strength, $F^a_0$. Our critical field data for different orientations and temperatures is in good agreement with recent specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity results.

Simultaneous optical and X-ray high speed photometry of Cyg X-2

The X-ray emission from X-ray binaries may originate in flares occurring when magnetic loops anchored in the disc reconnect. In analogy with our Sun, H alpha emission should arise as the accelerated electrons thermalize in the optically emitting disc, perhaps leading to correlated variability between X-rays, H alpha and the optical continuum. We present simultaneous X-ray and optical high speed photometry of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary Cyg X-2 to search for such correlations. The highest time resolution achieved is 5 ms in white light and 100 ms with a 3 nm filter centred on H alpha. We find power on timescales > 100s (flickering) in optical with a total r.m.s. of a few %, about an order of magnitude less than that seen in X-rays. We do not find significant correlations between the X-ray and optical fluxes on short timescales, hence cannot conclude whether magnetic flares contribute significantly to the optical emission.

Neutron scattering evidence for magnetic field driven abrupt magnetic and structural transitions in a phase separated manganite

Substitutions at the Mn-site of the charge-ordered Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganite is an effective way to induce abrupt jumps on the magnetic field driven magnetization curve. In order to get new insights into the origin of this remarkable feature, the Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn0.97Ga0.03O3 perovskite manganite has been studied by neutron diffraction, versus temperature and at 2.5K in an applied magnetic field up to 6 Tesla. A weak and complex antiferromagnetic order is found for the low temperature ground-state. Magnetic transitions, associated with structural ones, are evidenced for certain strengths of magnetic field, which gives rise to the step-like behavior corresponding to the magnetization curve. Small angle neutron scattering provides evidence for a nucleation process of micron size ferromagnetic domains which follows the magnetization behavior.

Revealing polarons with high pressure on low electron-doped manganites

Pressure sensitivity (up to 1 GPa) of the electrical resistivity and of the ac susceptibility was measured for low electron doping levels of Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$MnO$_3$ (CYMO) and of Ca$_{1-x}$Sm$_x$MnO$_3$ (CSMO) ceramic samples (0.05 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.15). A very weak pressure dependence of the Curie temperature (T$_c$) was observed for both systems ($\sim$ 6 K GPa$^{-1}$), when compared to the hole-doped manganites of the same T$_c$ ($\sim$ 20 K GPa$^{-1}$). Our results can be interpreted within a modified Double Exchange scenario, where pressure alters the reduction of the bandwidth produced by the electron-phonon interaction associated with small Fröhlich polarons in the weak to intermediate coupling regime.
