A method to measure the resonance transitions between the gravitationally bound quantum states of neutrons in the GRANIT spectrometer

We present a method to measure the resonance transitions between the gravitationally bound quantum states of neutrons in the GRANIT spectrometer. The purpose of GRANIT is to improve the accuracy of measurement of the quantum states parameters by several orders of magnitude, taking advantage of long storage of Ultracold neutrons at specula trajectories. The transitions could be excited using a periodic spatial variation of a magnetic field gradient. If the frequency of such a perturbation (in the frame of a moving neutron) coincides with a resonance frequency defined by the energy difference of two quantum states, the transition probability will sharply increase. The GRANIT experiment is motivated by searches for short-range interactions (in particular spin-dependent interactions), by studying the interaction of a quantum system with a gravitational field, by searches for extensions of the Standard model, by the unique possibility to check the equivalence principle for an object in a quantum state and by studying various quantum optics phenomena.

Spin-dependent transition rates through exchange coupled localized spin pairs during coherent spin excitation

The effect of exchange interactions within spin pairs on spin-dependent transport and recombination rates through localized states in semiconductors during coherent electron spin resonant excitation is studied theoretically. It is shown that for identical spin systems, significant quantitative differences are to be expected between the results of pEDMR/pODMR experiments were permutation symmetry is the observable as compared to pESR experiments with polarization as the observable. It is predicted that beat oscillations of the spin nutations and not the nutations themselves dominate the transport or recombination rates when the exchange coupling strength or the field strength of the exciting radiation exceed the difference of the Zeeman energies within the spin pair. Furthermore, while the intensities of the rate oscillations decrease with increasing exchange within the spin pairs, the singlet and triplet signals retain their relative strength. This means that pEDMR and pODMR experiments could allow better experimental access to ESR forbidden singlet transitions which are hardly or not at all accessible with conventional pulsed electron spin resonance spectroscopy.

GRANIT project: a trap for gravitational quantum states of UCN

Previous studies of gravitationally bound states of ultracold neutrons showed the quantization of energy levels, and confirmed quantum mechanical predictions for the average size of the two lowest energy states wave functions. Improvements in position-like measurements can increase the accuracy by an order of magnitude only. We therefore develop another approach, consisting in accurate measurements of the energy levels. The GRANIT experiment is devoted to the study of resonant transitions between quantum states induced by an oscillating perturbation. According to Heisenberg's uncertainty relations, the accuracy of measurement of the energy levels is limited by the time available to perform the transitions. Thus, trapping quantum states will be necessary, and each source of losses has to be controlled in order to maximize the lifetime of the states. We discuss the general principles of transitions between quantum states, and consider the main systematical losses of neutrons in a trap.

Transport and recombination through weakly coupled localized spin pairs in semiconductors during coherent spin excitation

Semi-analytical predictions for the transients of spin-dependent transport and recombination rates through localized states in semiconductors during coherent electron spin excitation are made for the case of weakly spin-coupled charge carrier ensembles. The results show that the on-resonant Rabi frequency of electrically or optically detected spin-oscillation doubles abruptly as the strength of the resonant microwave field gamma B_1 exceeds the Larmor frequency separation within the pair of charge carrier states between which the transport or recombination transition takes place. For the case of a Larmor frequency separation of the order of gamma B_1 and arbitrary excitation frequencies, the charge carrier pairs exhibit four different nutation frequencies. From the calculations, a simple set of equations for the prediction of these frequencies is derived.

High-sensitivity optical monitoring of a micro-mechanical resonator with a quantum-limited optomechanical sensor

We experimentally demonstrate the high-sensitivity optical monitoring of a micro-mechanical resonator and its cooling by active control. Coating a low-loss mirror upon the resonator, we have built an optomechanical sensor based on a very high-finesse cavity (30000). We have measured the thermal noise of the resonator with a quantum-limited sensitivity at the 10^-19 m/rootHz level, and cooled the resonator down to 5K by a cold-damping technique. Applications of our setup range from quantum optics experiments to the experimental demonstration of the quantum ground state of a macroscopic mechanical resonator.

Instability of metal-insulator transition against thermal cycling in phase separated Cr-doped manganites

We show that metal-insulator transition in Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xCrxO3 (x = 0.015-0.025) is unstable against thermal cycling. Insulator-metal transition shifts down and low temperature resistivity increases each time when the sample is cycled between a starting temperature TS and a final temperature TF. The effect is dramatic lower is x. Insulator-metal transition in x = 0.015 can be completely destroyed by thermal cycling in absence of magnetic field as well as under H = 2 T. Magnetic measurements suggest that ferromagnetic phase fraction decreases with thermal cycling. We suggest that increase in strains in ferromagnetic- charge ordered interface could be a possible origin of the observed effect.
