External magnetic fields and the chiral phase transition in QED at nonzero chemical potential

Inspired by recent discussions of inverse magnetic catalysis in the literature, we examine the effects of a uniform external magnetic field on the chiral phase transition in quenched ladder QED at nonzero chemical potential. In particular, we study the behaviour of the effective potential as the strength of the magnetic field is varied while the chemical potential is held constant. For a certain range of the magnetic field, the effective potential develops a local maximum. Inverse magnetic catalysis is observed at this maximum, whereas the usual magnetic catalysis is observed at the true minimum of the effective potential.

Probing the Gravitational Scale via Running Gauge Couplings

According to a recent paper by Robinson and Wilczek, the leading gravitational corrections to the running of gauge couplings tend to reduce the values of the couplings at energies below the gravitational scale, defined to be the energy above which gravity becomes strongly interacting. If the physical gravitational scale is sufficiently low, as conjectured in certain extra-dimension models, this behavior of the gauge couplings can be measured in future high energy experiments, providing a way to determine where the gravitational scale lies. We estimate that measurements of the fine structure constant at the Large Hadron Collider and the proposed International Linear Collider energies can probe the gravitational scale up to several hundred TeV, which will be the most stringent test that can be obtained in the conceivable future.

Gauge independent approach to chiral symmetry breaking in a strong magnetic field

The gauge independence of the dynamical fermion mass generated through chiral symmetry breaking in QED in a strong, constant external magnetic field is critically examined. We show that the bare vertex approximation, in which the vertex corrections are ignored, is a consistent truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations in the lowest Landau level approximation. The dynamical fermion mass, obtained as the solution of the truncated Schwinger-Dyson equations evaluated on the fermion mass shell, is shown to be manifestly gauge independent. By establishing a direct correspondence between the truncated Schwinger-Dyson equations and the 2PI (two-particle-irreducible) effective action truncated at the lowest nontrivial order in the loop expansion as well as in the 1/N_f expansion (N_f is the number of fermion flavors), we argue that in a strong magnetic field the dynamical fermion mass can be reliably calculated in the bare vertex approximation.

Gauge Independence and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in a Strong Magnetic Field

The gauge independence of the dynamical fermion mass generated through chiral symmetry breaking in QED in a strong, constant external magnetic field is critically examined. We present a (first, to the best of our knowledge) consistent truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations in the lowest Landau level approximation. We demonstrate that the dynamical fermion mass, obtained as the solution of the truncated Schwinger-Dyson equations evaluated on the fermion mass shell, is manifestly gauge independent.

T-violation in flavour oscillations as a test for relativity principles at a neutrino factory

We study the effects of violation of the equivalence principle (VEP) or violation of Lorentz invariance (LIV) in the neutrino sector on the asymmetry between T-conjugate oscillation probabilities, $ΔP_T \equiv P(ν_α \to ν_β) - P(ν_β \to ν_α)$, in a three-flavour framework. We find that additional mixing due to these mechanisms, while obeying all present bounds, can lead to an observable enhancement, suppression, and/or sign change in $ΔP_T$ for the preferred energies and baselines of a neutrino factory. The measurement of this asymmetry can be used to establish a new upper limit of order $10^{-26}$ on VEP or LIV in the $(ν_e, ν_μ)$ and $(ν_e, ν_τ)$ sectors.

Application of Padé interpolation to stationary state problems

If the small and large coupling behavior of a physical system can be computed perturbatively and expressed respectively as power series in a coupling parameter $g$ and $1/g$, a Padé approximant embracing the two series can interpolate between these two limits and provide an accurate estimate of the system's behavior in the generally intractable intermediate coupling regime. The methodology and validity of this approach are illustrated by considering several stationary state problems in quantum mechanics.

Effective Neutrino Mass Operators: A Guide to Model Building

Effective operators relevant for generating small Majorana masses for the neutrinos in the Standard Model will be considered. These operators serve as a useful guide for building models of neutrino mass. Some of these operators are represented by familiar models in the literature, and others lead to interesting new models. The number of relevant operators will be drastically reduced if neutrinoless double beta decays are observed in current experiments.

Classification of Effective Neutrino Mass Operators

We present a classification of SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge invariant ΔL = 2 (L being lepton number) effective operators relevant for generating small Majorana neutrino masses. Operators of dimension up to 11 have been included in our analysis. This approach enables us to systematically identify interesting neutrino mass models. It is shown that many of the well-known models fall into this classification. In addition, a number of new models are proposed and their neutrino phenomenology is outlined. Of particular interest is a large class of models in which neutrinoless double beta decays arise at a lower order compared to the neutrino mass, making these decays accessible to the current round of experiments.

Pade Interpolation: Methodology and Application to Quarkonium

A novel application of the Pade approximation is proposed in which the Pade approximant is used as an interpolation for the small and large coupling behaviors of a physical system, resulting in a prediction of the behavior of the system at intermediate couplings. This method is applied to quarkonium systems and reasonable values for the c and b quark masses are obtained.

Atmospheric Neutrino Tests of Neutrino Oscillation Mechanisms

Recent Super-Kamiokande data on the atmospheric neutrino anomaly are used to test various mechanisms for neutrino oscillations. It is found that the current atmospheric neutrino data alone cannot rule out any particular mechanism. Future long-baseline experiments should play an important role in identifying the underlying neutrino oscillation mechanism.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking in an External Field

The effects of an external field on the dynamics of chiral symmetry breaking are studied using quenched, ladder QED as our model gauge field theory. It is found that a uniform external magnetic field enables the chiral symmetry to be spontaneously broken at weak gauge couplings, in contrast with the situation when no external field is present. The broken chiral symmetry is restored at high temperatures as well as at high chemical potentials. The nature of the two chiral phase transitions is different: the transition at high temperatures is a continuous one whereas the phase transition at high chemical potentials is discontinuous.

Chiral symmetry breaking in a uniform external magnetic field II. Symmetry restoration at high temperatures and chemical potentials

Chiral symmetry is dynamically broken in quenched, ladder QED at weak gauge couplings when an external magnetic field is present. In this paper, we show that chiral symmetry is restored above a critical chemical potential and the corresponding phase transition is of first order. In contrast, the chiral symmetry restoration at high temperatures (and at zero chemical potential) is a second order phase transition.

Neutrino Oscillations from String Theory

We derive the character of neutrino oscillations that results from a model of equivalence principle violation suggested recently by Damour and Polyakov as a plausible consequence of string theory. In this model neutrino oscillations will take place through interaction with a long range scalar field of gravitational origin even if the neutrinos are degenerate in mass. The energy dependence of the oscillation length is identical to that in the conventional mass mixing mechanism. This possibility further highlghts the independence of and need for more exacting direct neutrino mass measurements together with a next generation of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.

Comments on Neutrino Tests of Special Relativity

We point out that the assumption of Lorentz noninvariance examined recently by Coleman and Glashow leads to neutrino flavor oscillations which are phenomenologically equivalent to those obtained by assuming the neutrinos violate the principle of equivalence. We then comment on the limits on Lorentz noninvariance which can be derived from solar, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrino experiments.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking in a Uniform External Magnetic Field

Using the nonperturbative Schwinger-Dyson equation, we show that chiral symmetry is dynamically broken in QED at weak couplings when an external magnetic field is present, and that chiral symmetry is restored at temperatures above $T_c \simeq απ^2/\sqrt{2 π|eH|}$, where $α$ is the fine structure constant and $H$ is the magnetic field strength.
