A Possible Violation of the Equivalence Principle by Neutrinos

We consider the effect of a long range, flavor changing tensor interaction of possible gravitational origin. Neutrino mixing experiments provide the most sensitive probe to date for such forces---testing the equivalence principle at levels below $10^{-20}$. Here we justify and generalize a formalism for describing such effects. The constraints from neutrino mixing experiments on gravitationally induced mixing are calculated. Our detailed analysis of the atmospheric neutrino data confirms a remarkable result: the atmospheric neutrino data implies the same size force as does the solar neutrino data. Additional tests of this suggestive result are discussed.

Spectral Analysis of Neutrino Mixing Mechanisms

The prospects of using spectral measurements of solar neutrinos to distinguish different mechanisms of neutrino flavor mixing are analyzed. The mechanisms studied include the conventional mass mixing mechanism and an alternative mechanism which assumes a flavor nondiagonal neutrino-gravity coupling.

Solar Neutrinos and the Principle of Equivalence

We study the proposed solution of the solar neutrino problem which requires a flavor nondiagonal coupling of neutrinos to gravity. We adopt a phenomenological point of view and investigate the consequences of the hypothesis that the neutrino weak interaction eigenstates are linear combinations of the gravitational eigenstates which have slightly different couplings to gravity, $f_1G$ and $f_2G$, $|f_1-f_2| << 1$, corresponding to a difference in red-shift between electron and muon neutrinos, $Δz/(1+z) \sim |f_1 - f_2|$. We perform a $χ^2$ analysis of the latest available solar neutrino data and obtain the allowed regions in the space of the relevant parameters. The existing data rule out most of the parameter space which can be probed in solar neutrino experiments, allowing only $|f_1 - f_2| \sim 3 \times 10^{-14}$ for small values of the mixing angle ($2 \times 10^{-3} \le \sin^2(2θ_G) \le 10^{-2}$) and $10^{-16} \stackrel{<}{\sim} |f_1 - f_2| \stackrel{<}{\sim}10^{-15}$ for large mixing ($0.6 \le \sin^2(2θ_G) \le 0.9$). Measurements of the $^8{\rm B}$-neutrino energy spectrum in the SNO and Super-Kamiokande experiments will provide stronger constraints independent of all considerations related to solar models. We show that these measurements will be able to exclude part of the allowed region as well as to distinguish between conventional oscillations and oscillations due to the violation of the equivalence principle.

Outcome from Spontaneous CP Violation for B Decays

In the aspon model solution of the strong $CP$ problem, there is a gauged $U(1)$ symmetry, spontaneously broken by the same vacuum expectation value which breaks $CP$, whose massive gauge boson provides an additional mechanism of weak $CP$ violation. We calculate the $CP$ asymmetries in $B$ decays for the aspon model and show that they are typically smaller than those predicted from the standard model. A linear relation between the $CP$ asymmetries of different decay processes is obtained.

Renormalization of the Neutrino Mass Operator

A small neutrino Majorana mass can arise in the Standard Model as an effective dimension 5 operator. We calculate the renormalization of this operator in the minimal Standard Model and in its two-Higgs-doublet and supersymmetric extensions. Renormalization from the scale of lepton number violation (e.g., the Planck scale or a GUT scale) to the weak scale decreases the strength of this operator by an order of magnitude or more if the top quark and Higgs boson masses are large. Neutrino mixing angles also run with momentum. We show instances where small mixing at a high scale becomes large at the weak scale, and vice versa.

Neutrino Mixing due to a Violation of the Equivalence Principle

Massless neutrinos will mix if their couplings to gravity are flavor dependent, i.e., violate the principle of equivalence. Because the gravitational interaction grows with neutrino energy, the solar neutrino problem and the recent atmospheric neutrino data may be simultaneously explained by violations at the level of 1E-14 to 1E-17 or smaller. This possibility is severely constrained by present accelerator neutrino experiments and will be preeminently tested in proposed long baseline accelerator neutrino experiments.
