Non-linear conduction in charge-ordered Pr$_{0.63}$ Ca$_{0.37}$ MnO$_{3}$ : Effect of magnetic fields

Non-linear conduction in a single crystal of charge-ordered Pr$_{0.63}$Ca$_{0.37}$MnO$_{3}$ has been investigated in an applied magnetic field. In zero field, the non-linear conduction, which starts at T$<$T$_{CO}$ can give rise to a region of negative differential resistance (NDR) which shows up below the Néel temperature. Application of a magnetic field inhibits the appearance of NDR and makes the non-linear conduction strongly hysteritic on cycling of the bias current. This is most severe in the temperature range where the charge ordered state melts in an applied magnetic field. Our experiment strongly suggests that application of a magnetic field in the CO regime causes a coexistance two phases.

Optical Limiting in Single-walled Carbon Nanotube Suspensions

Optical limiting behaviour of suspensions of single-walled carbon nanotubes in water, ethanol and ethylene glycol is reported. Experiments with 532 nm, 15 nsec duration laser pulses show that optical limiting occurs mainly due to nonlinear scattering. The observed host liquid dependence of optical limiting in different suspensions suggests that the scattering originates from microbubbles formed due to absorption-induced heating.

Non-linear electrical conduction and broadband noise in charge-ordered rare earth manganate Nd_0.5Ca_0.5MnO_3

Measurements of the dc transport properties and the low-frequency conductivity noise in films of charge ordered Nd_0.5Ca_0.5MnO_3 grown on Si subtrate reveal the existence of a threshold field in the charge ordered regime beyond which strong non linear conduction sets in along with a large broad band conductivity noise. Threshold-dependent conduction disappears as T -> T_{CO}, the charge ordering temperature. This observation suggests that the charge ordered state gets depinned at the onset of the non-linear conduction.

Collapse of the charge ordering gap of Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} in an applied magnetic field

We report results of tunneling studies on the charge ordering compound Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} in a magnetic field up to 6T and for temperature down to 25K.We show that a gap (2Δ_{CO} \approx 0.5eV opens up in the density of state (DOS) at the Fermilevel (E_F) on charge ordering (T_{CO}=150K) which collapses in an applied magnetic field when the charge ordered state melts. There is a clear correspondence between the behavior of the resistivity and the gap formation and its collapse in an applied magnetic field. We conclude that a gap in the DOS at E_F is necessary for the stability of the charge ordered state.

Electronic Raman scattering and photoluminescence from La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ exhibiting giant magnetoresistance

Raman and Photoluminescence (PL) experiments on correlated metallic La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ have been carried out using different excitation wavelengths as a function of temperature from 15 K to 300 K. Our data suggest a Raman mode centered at 1800 cm$^{-1}$ and a PL band at 2.2 eV. The intensities of the two peaks decrease with increasing temperature. The Raman mode can be attributed to a plasmon excitation whose frequency and linewidths are consistent with the measured resistivities. The PL involves intersite electronic transitions of the manganese ions.

Reversible Pressure-Induced Amorphization in Solid C70 : Raman and Photoluminescence Study

We have studied single crystals of $C_{70}$ by Raman scattering and photoluminescence in the pressure range from 0 to 31.1 GPa. The Raman spectrum at 31.1 GPa shows only a broad band similar to that of the amorphous carbon without any trace of the Raman lines of $C_{70}$. After releasing the pressure from 31.1 GPa, the Raman and the photoluminescence spectra of the recovered sample are that of the starting $C_{70}$ crystal. These results indicate that the $C_{70}$ molecules are stable upto 31.1 GPa and the amorphous carbon high pressure phase is reversible, in sharp contrast to the results on solid $C_{60}$. A qualitative explaination is suggested in terms of inter- versus intra-molecular interactions.
