A single molecule switch based on two Pd nanocrystals linked by a conjugated dithiol

Tunneling spectroscopy measurements have been carried out on a single molecule device formed by two Pd nanocrystals (dia, $\sim$5 nm) electronically coupled by a conducting molecule, dimercaptodiphenylacetylene. The I-V data, obtained by positioning the tip over a nanocrystal electrode, exhibit negative differential resistance (NDR) on a background M-I-M characteristics. The NDR feature occurs at $\sim$0.67 V at 300 K and shifts to a higher bias of 1.93 V at 90 K. When the tip is held in the middle region of the device, a coulomb blockade region is observed ($\pm\sim$0.3 V).

Inhomogeneous magnetic behavior of Pr0.7Ca0.3CoO3 and Nd0.7Ca0.3CoO3

Unlike La0.7Ca0.3CoO2.97, Pr0.7Ca0.3CoO3 and Nd0.7Ca0.3CoO2.95 do not show distinct ferromagnetic transitions, but instead they exhibit very low magnetic moments down to 50 K. A detail study of magnetic properties of Pr0.7Ca0.3CoO3 and Nd0.7Ca0.3CoO2.95 shows that the materials are inhomogeneous, exhibiting properties similar to those of frustrated magnetic systems. In both these cobaltates, small ferromagnetic clusters seem to be present in an antiferromagnetic host.

Absence of ferromagnetism in Mn- and Co-doped ZnO

Following the theoretical predictions of ferromagnetism in Mn- and Co-doped ZnO, several workers reported ferromagnetism in thin films as well as in bulk samples of these materials. While some observe room-temperature ferromagnetism, others find magnetization at low temperatures. Some of the reports, however, cast considerable doubt on the magnetism of Mn- and Co-doped ZnO. In order to conclusively establish the properties of Mn- and Co-doped ZnO, samples with 6 percent and 2 percent dopant concentrations, have been prepared by the low-temperature decomposition of acetate solid solutions. The samples have been characterized by x-ray diffraction, EDAX and spectroscopic methods to ensure that the dopants are substitutional. All the Mn- and Co-doped ZnO samples (prepared at 400 deg C and 500 deg C) fail to show ferromagnetism. Instead, their magnetic properties are best described by a Curie-Weiss type behavior. It appears unlikely that these materials would be useful for spintronics, unless additional carriers are introduced by some means.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Study of Phase Segregation in Nd$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$

We present results of an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ with x = 0.5 across the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic, insulator to metal transition at 260 K (T$_c$) and the antiferromagnetic, charge ordering transition (T$_N$ = T$_{co}$) at 150 K. The results are compared with those on Nd$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$MnO$_3$ which undergoes a transition to a homogeneous A-type antiferromagnetic phase at T$_N$ = 230 K and on La$_{0.77}$Ca$_{0.23}$MnO$_3$ which undergoes a transition to coexisting ferromagnetic metallic and ferromagnetic insulating phases. For x = 0.5, the EPR signals below T$_c$ consist of two Lorentzian components attributable to the coexistence of two phases. From the analysis of the temperature dependence of the resonant fields and intensities, we conclude that in the mixed phase ferromagnetic and A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases coexist. The x = 0.55 compound shows a single Lorentzian throughout the temperature range. The signal persists for a few degrees below T_N. The behaviour of the A-type AFM phase is contrasted with that of the two ferromagnetic phases present in La$_{0.77}$Ca$_{0.23}$MnO$_3$. The comparison of behaviour of A-type AFM signal observed in both Nd$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$and Nd$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$MnO$_3with the two FM phases of La$_{0.77}$Ca$_{0.23}$MnO$_3$, vis-a-vis the shift of resonances with respect to the paramagnetic phases and the behaviour of EPR intensity as a function of temperature conclusively prove that the Nd$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$undergoes phase separation into A-type AFM and FM phases.

Electrical properties of ferroelectric YMnO3 films deposited on n-type Si (111) substrates

YMnO3 thin films were grown on n - type Si substrate by nebulized spray pyrolysis in Metal - Ferroelectric - Semiconductor (MFS) configuration. The C-V characteristics of the film in MFS structure exhibit hysteretic behavior consistent with the polarization charge switching direction, with the memory window decreasing with increase in temperature. The density of interface states decreases with the increase in the annealing temperature. Mapping of the silicon energy band gap with the interface states has been carried out. The leakage current measured in the accumulation region, is lower in well-crystallized thin films and obeys a space- charge limited conduction mechanism. The calculated activation energy from the dc leakage current characteristics of Arhennius plot reveals that the activation energy correspond to the oxygen vacancy motion

Current-induced phase control in charged-ordered Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 crystals

Single crystals of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 show current-induced insulator-metal transitions at low temperatures. In addition, the charge-ordering transition temperature decreases with increasing current. The electroresistive ratio, defined as r0.5/rI where r0.5 is the resistivity at a current of 0.5 mA and rI the resistivity at a given applied current, I, varies markedly with temperature and the value of I. Thermal hysteresis observed in Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 at the insulator-metal transition indicates that the transition is first-order. The current-induced changes are comparable to those induced by magnetic fields, and the insulator-metal transition in Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 is accordingly associated with a larger drop in resistivity.

Brillouin Scattering Studies of La_{0.77}Ca_{0.23}MnO_3 Across Metal-Insulator Transition

Temperature-dependent Brillouin scattering studies have been carried out on La_{0.77}Ca_{0.23}MnO_3 across the paramagnetic insulator - ferromagnetic metal (I-M) transition. The spectra show a surface Rayleigh wave (SRW) and a high velocity pseudo surface acoustic wave (HVPSAW) besides bulk acoustic waves (BAW). The Brillouin shifts associated with SRW and HVPSAW show blue-shifts, where as the frequencies of the BAW decrease below the I-M transition temperature (T_C) of 230 K. These results can be understood based on the temperature dependence of the elastic constants. We also observe a central peak whose width is maximum at T_C.

Electronic phase separation in the rare earth manganates, (La1-xLnx)0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (Ln = Nd, Gd and Y)

All the three series of manganates showsaturation magnetization characteristic of ferromagnetism, with the ferromagnetic Tc decreasing with increasing in x up to a critical value of x, xc (xc = 0.6, 0.3, 0.2 respectively for Nd, Gd, Y). For x > xc, the magnetic moments are considerably smaller showing a small increase around TM, the value of TM decreasing slightly with increase in x or decrease in < rA >. The ferromagnetic compositions (x xc) show insulator-metal (IM) transitions, while the compositions with x > xc are insulating. The magnetic and electrical resistivity behavior of these manganates is consistent with the occurrence of phase separation in the compositions around xc, corresponding to a critical average radius of the A-site cation, < rAc >, of 1.18 A. Both Tc and TIM increase linearly when < rA > > < rAc > or x xc as expected of a homogenous ferromagnetic phase. Both Tc and TM decrease linearly with the A-site cation size disorder at the A-site as measured by the variance s2. Thus, an increase in s2 favors the insulating AFM state. Percolative conduction is observed in the compositions with < rA > > < rAc >. Electron transport properties in the insulating regime for x > xc conforms to the variable range hopping mechanism. More interestingly, when x > xc, the real part of dielectric constant (e') reaches a high value (104-106) at ordinary temperatures dropping to a very small (~500) value below a certain temperature, the value of which decreases with decreasing frequency.

A systematic study of four series of electron-doped rare earth manganates, LnxCa1-xMnO3 (Ln=La, Nd, Gd and Y) over the x=0.02-0.25 composition range

Electrical and magnetic properties of four series of manganates LnxCa1-xMnO3 (Ln=La, Nd, Gd and Y) have been studied in the electron doped regime (x=0.02-0.25) in order to investigate the various inter-dependent phenomena such as ferromagnetism, phase separation and charge ordering. The general behavior of all the four series of manganates is similar, with some of the properties showing dependence on the average radius of the A-site cations, and cation size disorder. Thus, all the compositions show increase in magnetization at 100-120 K (TM) for x , probably due to the increased phase separation induced by site disorder. This is also reflected in the larger width of the hysteresis loops at T . In this regime, the electrical resistivity decreases with increasing x, but remains low and nearly constant T>TM. The percolative nature of the conduction mechanism at T xmax, the materials become antiferromagnetic and charge-ordered at a temperature TCA, accompanied by a marked increase in resistivity. The value of TCA increases with increase in and x (upto x=0.3). Thus, all the four series of manganates are characterized by a phase-separated regime between x=0.02 and 0.1-0.15 and an antiferromagnetic charge-ordered regime at x>0.1-0.15.

An Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Study of Electron-Hole Asymmetry in Charge Ordered Pr_1-x Ca_xMnO_3 (x=0.64, 0.36)

We present and compare the results of temperature-dependent electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies on Pr_1-x Ca_xMnO_3 for x = 0.64 which is electron-doped with those on the hole doped x = 0.36 composition. The temperature dependence of the various parameters obtained from the powder and single crystal spectra show significant differences between the two manganites. At room temperature the `g' parameter for the electron doped system is less than the free electron `g' value `g_e', whereas for the hole-doped system it is more than `g_e'. Further, the `g' value and the linewidth obtained from the powder spectra as well as the single crystal spectra show different functional dependences on temperature in the two systems. Quite strikingly, the peak observed at T_{co} in the temperature dependence of the asymmetry parameter, alpha, of the single crystal spectra in the hole-doped system is absent in the electron-doped system. We understand this contrasting behaviour of the EPR parameters in the two systems in terms of very different nature of microscopic interactions in them.

Raman Scattering in charge ordered Pr_{0.63}Ca_{0.37}MnO_{3} : Anomalous Temperature Dependence of Linewidth

We report the evolution of the Raman active A_g phonon modes in the charge-ordered manganite Pr_{0.63}Ca_{0.37}MnO_{3} as a function of temperature from 300K to 25K. Our studies reveal that the linewidths of A_g(2) and A_g(4) phonons increase as temperature decreases. This anomalous temperature dependence of phonon lineshapes, seen for the first time in charge ordered manganites, can be quantitatively understood in terms of strong spin-phonon coupling involving t_{2g} spins and A_g phonons.

Cooling rate dependence of the antiferromagnetic domain structure of a single crystalline charge ordered manganite

The low temperature phase of single crystals of Nd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ and Gd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ manganites is investigated by squid magnetometry. Nd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ undergoes a charge-ordering transition at $T_{CO}$=245K, and a long range CE-type antiferromagnetic state is established at $T_N$=145K. The dc-magnetization shows a cooling rate dependence below $T_N$, associated with a weak spontaneous moment. The associated excess magnetization is related to uncompensated spins in the CE-type antiferromagnetic structure, and to the presence in this state of fully orbital ordered regions separated by orbital domain walls. The observed cooling rate dependence is interpreted to be a consequence of the rearrangement of the orbital domain state induced by the large structural changes occurring upon cooling.

Temperature-dependent electron paramagnetic resonance studies of charge ordered Nd_0.5Ca_0.5MnO_3

We report Electron Paramagnetic Resonance measurements on single crystalline and powder samples of Nd_0.5Ca_0.5MnO_3 across the charge-ordering transition at T_co=240 K down to the antiferromagnetic ordering transition at T_N = 140 K. The changes in the linewidth, g-factor and intensity as functions of temperature are studied to understand the nature of spin-dynamics in the system. We explain the observed large decrease in the linewidth from T_N to T_co in terms of motional narrowing caused by the hopping of the Jahn-Teller polarons yielding an activation energy of E_a = 0.13 eV. Similar analysis of data on Pr_0.6Ca_0.4MnO_3 published earlier gives E_a=0.2 eV. Below T_co, the g-value increases continuously suggesting a gradual strengthening of the orbital ordering. We give a qualitative explanation of the temperature dependence and of the maximum in the asymmetry ratio A/B observed at T_co in single crystal spectra which also supports the themodel of motional narrowing.

Giant anisotropic magnetostriction in Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$

Magnetic, linear thermal expansion (LTE), anisotropic ($λ_t$) and volume ($ω$) magnetostriction properties of Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ were investigated. The LTE decreases smoothly from 300 K without a clear anomaly either around the Curie (T$_C$ = 270 K) or the Neel temperature (T$_N$ = 100 K) and it exhibits hysteresis over a wide temperature range (60 K-270 K) upon warming. Isothermal magnetization study suggests that 13 % of the ferromagnetic phase coexists with 87 % of the antiferromagnetic phase at 25 K. The parallel and perpendicular magnetostrictions undergo rapid changes during the metamagnetic transition. Contrary to the isotropic giant volume magnetostriction reported in manganites so far, this compound exhibits a giant anisotropic magnetostriction ($λ_t \approx 10^{-3}$) and smaller volume ($ω\approx 10^{-4}$) magnetostrictions below T$_N$. We suggest that the field induced antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition is accompanied by a structural transition from the d$_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital ordered antiferromagnetic (orthorhombic) to the orbital disordered ferromagnetic (tetragonal) phase. The metamagnetic transition proceeds through nucleation and growth of the ferromagnetic domains at the expense of the antiferromagnetic phase. The preferential orientation of the ferromagnetic (tetragonal) domains along the field direction increases the linear dimension of the sample in the field direction and decreases in the orthogonal direction leading to the observed giant anisotropic magnetostriction effect. Our study also suggests that nanodomains of the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase possibly exist in the temperature region T$_N$ < T < T$_C$.

Thermal relaxation in charge ordered Pr$_{0.63}$ Ca$_{0.37}$ MnO$_3$ in presence of a magnetic field

We report observation of substantial thermal relaxation in single crystal of charge ordered system Pr$_{0.63}$Ca$_{0.37}$MnO$_3$ in an applied magnetic field of H = 8T. The relaxation is observed when the temperature is scanned in presence of a magnetic field in the temperature interval $T_{MH}<T<T_{CO}$ where $T_{CO}$ is the charge ordering temperature and $T_{MH}$ is charge melting temperature in a field. In this temperature range the system has coexisting charged ordered insulator (COI) and ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) phases. No such relaxation is observed in the COI state in H = 0T or in the FMM phase at $T < T_{MH}$ in presence of a magnetic field. We conclude that the thermal relaxation is due to two coexisting phases with nearly same free energies but separated by a potential barrier. This barrier makes the transformation from one phase to the other time-dependent in the scale of the specific heat experiment and gives rise to the thermal relaxation.

Specific heat study of single crystalline Pr$_{0.63}$ Ca$_{0.37}$ MnO$_{3}$ in presence of a magnetic field

We present the results of a study of specific heat on a single crystal of Pr$_{0.63}$Ca$_{0.37}$MnO$_3$ performed over a temperature range 3K-300K in presence of 0 and 8T magnetic fields. An estimate of the entropy and latent heat in a magnetic field at the first order charge ordering (CO) transition is presented. The total entropy change at the CO transition which is $\approx$ 1.8 J/mol K at 0T, decreases to $\sim$ 1.5 J/mol K in presence of 8T magnetic field. Our measurements enable us to estimate the latent heat $L_{CO}$ $\approx$ 235 J/mol involved in the CO transition. Since the entropy of the ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) state is comparable to that of the charge-ordered insulating (COI) state, a subtle change in entropy stabilises either of these two states. Our low temperature specific heat measurements reveal that the linear term is absent in 0T and surprisingly not seen even in the metallic FMM state.

An electron paramagnetic resonance study of Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} across the charge ordering transition

We report the first electron paramagnetic resonance studies of single crystals and powders of Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} in the 300-4.2 K range, covering the charge ordering transition at ~ 240 K and antiferromagnetic transition (T_N) at ~ 170 K. The asymmetry parameter for the Dysonian single crystal spectra shows anomalous increase at T_{co}. Below T_{co} the g-value increases continuously, suggesting a gradual strengthening of orbital ordering. The linewidth undergoes a sudden increase at T_{co} and continues to increase down to T_N. The intensity increases as the temperature is decreased till T_{co} due to the renormalization of magnetic susceptibility arising from the build up of ferromagnetic correlations. The value of the exchange constant, J, is estimated to be 154 K.
