Investigation of thermal and magnetic properties of defects in a spin-gap compound NaV2O5

The specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and ESR signals of a Na-deficient vanadate Na_xV_2O_5 (x=1.00 - 0.90) were studied in the temperature range 0.07 - 10 K, well below the transition point to a spin-gap state. The contribution of defects provided by sodium vacancies to the specific heat was observed. It has a low temperature part which does not tend to zero till at least 0.3 K and a high temperature power-like tail appears above 2 K. Such dependence may correspond to the existence of local modes and correlations between defects in V-O layers. The magnetic measurements and ESR data reveal S=1/2 degrees of freedom for the defects, with their effective number increasing in temperature and under magnetic field. The latter results in the nonsaturating magnetization at low temperature. No long-range magnetic ordering in the system of defects was found. A model for the defects based on electron jumps near vacancies is proposed to explain the observed effects. The concept of a frustrated two-dimensional correlated magnet induced by the defects is considered to be responsible for the absence of magnetic ordering.

The effects of nuclear spins on the quantum relaxation of the magnetization for the molecular nanomagnet Fe_8

The strong influence of nuclear spins on resonant quantum tunneling in the molecular cluster Fe_8 is demonstrated for the first time by comparing the relaxation rate of the standard Fe_8 sample with two isotopic modified samples: (i) 56_Fe is replaced by 57_Fe, and (ii) a fraction of 1_H is replaced by 2_H. By using a recently developed "hole digging" method, we measured an intrinsic broadening which is driven by the hyperfine fields. Our measurements are in good agreement with numerical hyperfine calculations. For T > 1.5 K, the influence of nuclear spins on the relaxation rate is less important, suggesting that spin-phonon coupling dominates the relaxation rate at higher temperature.

Quantum Hole Digging in Magnetic Molecular Clusters

Below 360 mK, Fe8 magnetic molecular clusters are in the pure quantum relaxation regime. We showed recently that the predicted ``square-root time'' relaxation is obeyed, allowing us to develop a new method for watching the evolution of the distribution of molecular spin states in the sample. We measured the distribution P(H) of molecules which are in resonance at the applied field H. Tunnelling initially causes rapid transitions of molecules, thereby ``digging a hole'' in P(H). For small initial magnetisation values, the hole width shows an intrinsic broadening which may be due to nuclear spins. We present here hole digging measurements in the thermal activated regime which may allow to study the effect of spin-phonon coupling.

Observation of the distribution of molecular spin states by resonant quantum tunneling of the magnetization

Below 360 mK, Fe magnetic molecular clusters are in the pure quantum relaxation regime and we show that the predicted square-root time relaxation is obeyed, allowing us to develop a new method for watching the evolution of the distribution of molecular spin states in the sample. We measure as a function of applied field H the statistical distribution P(ξ_H) of magnetic energy bias ξ_H$ acting on the molecules. Tunneling initially causes rapid transitions of molecules, thereby digging a hole in P(ξ_H) (around the resonant condition ξ_H = 0). For small initial magnetization values, the hole width shows an intrinsic broadening which may be due to nuclear spins.
